The fact that enemies can knock you into a pit on a single hit because of the knockback means that eliminating them to make the run easier is a big part of why people attempt these runs. Eliminating weapons entirely? It might be theoretically possible, but I don't think a human can do it in segmented fashion, let alone all in one shot.

And that is why speedrunning transcends just playing a game. I assume most people who play games on repeated runs do some little tricks to speed up the less interesting parts without going for a speedrun. From skipping cutscenes, to constantly rolling or whistle-sprinting in Zelda.

Depends on community. If moderators will do in the same manner as for some low%s it would be like this: Runs in the leaderboard first and foremost would be sorted by the amount of hits taken, then by time run took to complete. So his run will allways be above all ones that took 1 hit. Alternatively, they may make a completely new category, like it was with some Mario low%s.
wouldn’t it be the same w Doom 2 runs then? Since there was a secret deemed impossible to trigger for a complete 100% UV max run until Zero Master found a way to get it making his run the only “legit” 100% UV max run?

Castlevania isn't nearly as hard as you think if you don't barrel through. Of course, speedruning it makes it hard because of intentional game design mechanics.
I beat Castlevania for the first time a couple weeks ago, and can now beat it very consistently with minimal deaths. I'm close to a no death run and I'm even not particularly good at games. It's just that Castlevania is significantly easier than it's supposed to be once you understand how broken holy water is.

@@myrdana you should probably change it to 900apm lol. And it does sometimes hapen that players have a 1000apm but thats usually just holding a button like when youre creating zerglings and then the game counting each seperate zergling made as an action.
@@yevgenyiyeet8737 whoops yeah, my brain isnt awake it seems.
@@myrdana Yes, some extremely hard song charts in games like osu!mania or Lunatic Rave have 17 or even 18 keys per second sections, and that is when taking into account each single key alone, which makes some parts reach 60+ kps when including all keys together. Btw Takahashi Meijin used to have the record of 16 kps that stood for a really long time iirc.
@@myrdana You know that the n1 player (debatably) is reynor and he has gotten 1200+ apm multiple times in pro matches.
I love that an entirely new way of even holding the controller was necessary to do this
Just wait until someone attempts a pacifist run...
nobody will succeed
The fact that enemies can knock you into a pit on a single hit because of the knockback means that eliminating them to make the run easier is a big part of why people attempt these runs. Eliminating weapons entirely? It might be theoretically possible, but I don't think a human can do it in segmented fashion, let alone all in one shot.
I think sinisterwon has done it and just used the sword on the bosses. Lotsa damage boosting
If you search for sinister1 Ninja Gaiden pacifist you will find a run from AGDQ where he completes the game pacifist in a single setting. Uses the sword bosses, only

This game tormented me as a child. To see it finally beat this way is truly satisfying!!
The most amazing thing of this entire run is…. How the developers, without knowing, added a feature that would help this man accomplish a no hit record, which is the down+B method. That to me blows my mind. It’s been sitting there all these decades…. And just recently runners were able to discover and exploit it. That’s so amazing… gosh I love this
I remember beating battletoads as a kid. I raised my hands in triumph, wiped the dried milk off my upper lip and ventured outdoors where I was blinded by the first natural light I'd seen in over a week
11:45 Shout out to Karl for saying "intents and purposes" instead of "intensive purposes"
Or 'In tents and porpoises"
I love that you can hear him intentionally enunciate it
@@michaelleue7594 It's a common error...although people's purposes _can_ get pretty intense.
One of my favourite "technically possible" tricks is in Quake, where the final map has a trigger to exit the level near the ceiling in the boss room (According to the source files released by John Romero in 2006, "This is so in Deathmatch, exiting the map will go to the start map.") You can reach it using a combined grenade and rocket jump, but it's rarely ever attempted in single segment runs because it's so difficult to get the required height without dying and it's right at the end of the game. Since it allows you to exit the map without killing the boss, it's technically the "true" ending to the pacifist speedrun.

I remember I was 13 when our teacher asked us what our talents are. Some of my classmates said they can sing, dance, etc. When it was my turn, a quick idea came into my mind. "I can finish Ninja Gaiden without dying." But I didn't say that. The teacher might not get how awesome feat it was. So I just said, drawing is my talent. The teacher was happy and here I am now regretting that time.
PS: Slackanater, you are a legend! Much respect here.
Great overview, thank you Karl!
Oh hello, Papa Flammy! Imagine seeing you here!
Mathematics he loves it
But can he smash those integrals as fast and flawless as you do?
I love the speedrunner mentality. Like, "Alright, we know its possible now. Let's see who could do it fastest."
Also the usual it's imposible until someone does it, then after that its imposible to pull it off consistently until someone does it
And that is why speedrunning transcends just playing a game.
I assume most people who play games on repeated runs do some little tricks to speed up the less interesting parts without going for a speedrun. From skipping cutscenes, to constantly rolling or whistle-sprinting in Zelda.
@@HappyBeezerStudios Speedrunning is a different ball gamee altogether

Ya know, you talk a lot about the accomplishments of others. Idk how many people have said this but I would like to thank you on behalf of the gamer community for your accomplishments and dedication to documenting these milestones in the speed running and challenge running communities. I don't personally do either of these things but I really enjoy watching them. As an avid gamer, I really appreciate the quality of the content you provide. It's really awesome and you should be damn proud.
Also, hats off to Slackanater, love seeing anyone do the "impossible" :)
14:46 “after two more weeks of grinding, on the 23rd of December, he would do.. this.”
I almost was expecting “We’re finally landing” by HOME to start playing at the end there shout out to the legend Summoning Salt.
Nah, "We're Finally Landing" is more of an intro song. This run was more of a "4" moment. Or perhaps a "Highway Broken" by glue70 followed by a "...and that's where the record stands today. Thank you for watching".
My favorite part about Ninja Gaiden is that the first stage is basically just walking to the right. It gives you a false sense that the game is going to be easy as pie, but you get to through a couple more stages and it’s hell on earth.

Two things that never cease to amaze: The talent and dedication of speedrunners, and the quality of Karl Jobst's content.
Better than Summoning Salt and One Percent despite not being as detailed sometimes.

Slackanater: _Implies he's slacks off._
Also Slackanater: _Pulls off a genuine No-Damage Run of Ninja Gaiden._
Does this mean all other "no hit runs" are invalidated as there is a true no hit run now?
Yep
Depends on community. If moderators will do in the same manner as for some low%s it would be like this: Runs in the leaderboard first and foremost would be sorted by the amount of hits taken, then by time run took to complete. So his run will allways be above all ones that took 1 hit. Alternatively, they may make a completely new category, like it was with some Mario low%s.
wouldn’t it be the same w Doom 2 runs then? Since there was a secret deemed impossible to trigger for a complete 100% UV max run until Zero Master found a way to get it making his run the only “legit” 100% UV max run?
Yes
of course

I played the hell out of this game as a kid, i remember making it up to the battle with his father and dying, it was soul crushing to discover it sends you clear back to malth if you fail on one of those final battles.
I finally beat the game though, and as a kid i didn't get many new games so once i finished one i had to set a new goal for the game, and it usually meant beating a game without dying at all at least once.
I remember doing it to ninja Gaiden at least one time, I know i did it, i got nothing to prove to that game anymore and I'm satisfied with that.

I did the same, no deaths. Shhh, no one tell him there is an alternate ending. :P
We can't talk about difficult NES games without talking about Castlevania.
Castlevania isn't nearly as hard as you think if you don't barrel through. Of course, speedruning it makes it hard because of intentional game design mechanics.
Since when?
@@Pichuscute since forever. Granted, the game's still hard, but it's not impossible if you dont rush it.
I beat Castlevania for the first time a couple weeks ago, and can now beat it very consistently with minimal deaths. I'm close to a no death run and I'm even not particularly good at games. It's just that Castlevania is significantly easier than it's supposed to be once you understand how broken holy water is.
Castlevania is a cakewalk. I never understood why people thought it was a hard game.
