Download Empires & Puzzles today! pixly.go2cloud.org/SH493 I’ve been waiting to make this video for the last 7 years. The time has finally come. It truly means a lot to be able to tell this story. Hope you all enjoy!
Tyson's 8-second delay is one of the biggest mockeries for a speedrunner in any game. He just does his little dance in your face and you can't do anything about it.
It was pretty funny when watching the "Quest to beat abney317" video a few months ago and he was talking about how it had been seven years since someone else had held abney's Mario Kart 64 record, and what a remarkable streak that was. My first thought was to double check how long SummoningSalt had held the MTPO record, and yeah, he had that time frame beat.
There was a point where I thought it was kinda odd he hadn’t brought up anyone creeping up on his record for a good 30 minutes. Then he said that no one was within 19 seconds of him and I finally understood that Salt really just dominated the category.
The entire video, despite being about himself for a significant chunk of it, felt very humble. He acknowledges the amount of hard work, and luck, that went into every run, be they good, bad, or mediocre, and while he ended the video with "and that's where the record stands today" like usual, I feel like he's aware that record could be broken at any moment. I feel like this video is another example of just how incredible, friendly, and welcoming the speedrunning community is as a whole.
Actually a PHENOMENAL name for a speedrunner, cus that is exactly what ones does to one self, as there is NOONE with such a monk mental that one doesn't summon literal salt :P
Never knew the history and when that line was read, in my head I was thinking Matt Turk is back! Then I heard the runner was me... I was like, you're all dead lol.
"This runner, was me" I cant describe how glad that line made me. After all that has been done on this channel, some self-acknowledgement is both overdue and beyond deserved.
@@tehpunisher4568Definitely! I think part of what made this video work so well is that he treats his accomplishments as history and data rather than as bragging rights.
@@thatoneguy8512 he seems so humble and honest about it! And I definitely liked how he treated his timeline in the end where we could see every split. I am sure it was brutal but just seeing all that info like that really hit different
@@tehpunisher4568It helps that a lot of speedrunning is building on collective collected information and reiteration. Improvement thereupon. And sometimes, sheer dumb luck that cannot be replicated.
@@Dinictus Imagine grinding for 100s of hours to get that one lucky run. Must feel great afterwards! I'm just glad so many people can appreciate videogame talent. It didn't feel like this would ever be a thing when I was growing up.
Your raw talent and sportsmanship displayed in this video was insanely commendable. Not to diminish summoningsalt's hard work and dedication, but your work with this game (and zallard) was perhaps a huge factor in influencing what summoningsalt has become today. 🐐
It’s always inspiring to see your name in lights. I love the sportsmanship you all show each other, all the way down to leaving such a comment here. Congratulations on your contributions and time at the top.
I love that so much of the frustration with Tyson is from the 8 second delay he does. The idea of of losing a run to "He's just standing there! MENACINGLY!" is frustrating, but also quite funny.
Sinister and Zallard cheering you on and calming your nerves while watching their own times get beaten is a beautiful moment, really embodies the “We’re rivals, not enemies” mentality that the best speedrunning communities have. Props to them for being awesome
Losing a record just means a new goal to surpass! A chance to be the one pursuing again instead of being the one pursued for the moment. The race itself is the joy, not who's in the lead at any particular moment.
I’ll never forget watching one of the videos here (I think it was a Mario Kart one) and the Runner exclaimed “WE DID IT!” after breaking a record. Whether it was in reference to his viewers who were along for the ride or the community as a whole, it really showed me how positive the community is and gave me a lot of respect for the people who do it.
@@LateNightTableCo My favorite moment of any SS video is definitely the finale of his wii sports video. They don't get a new world record, he did this entire setup to show us that it isn't always about winning rather it is about how passionate you are towards your craft despite failing
Holy hell, Zallard1 and Sinister1 being in the chat as you made it to Tyson was like having Doc literally pep talking you before the fight. This is a phenomenal video that is so many years in the making and incredibly deserved, congratulations Salt!
I genuinely think the introduction of matt turk in this video is hands down the best moment in all of your videos. Changing my view of him from the final boss of Punch Out to an ancient hero of legend.
"... this runner... was me." I've never heard Summoning Salt introduce himself as if he's an immortal historian telling you how he became a living legend, it was chills-inducing for me lol
It actually made me emotional hearing about how Sinister and Zallard were in Salt's chat cheering him on and helping him calm his mind before Tyson. And the way they congratulated him at the end, just a heartwarming moment.
Man, it’s weirdly delightful to hear you say, “And that runner… was me!” Like, I put these on while working on other projects, and I actually looked up with a big smile on my face when you said that. Really heartwarming as someone who only really keeps up with speed running through your videos to get to hear more of your personal story like this.
His very first video was about one of his Punch Out records. It's literally the reason why he started doing these types of videos. Anyone that has been here from the beginning knew this "twist" was coming.
Oh man I didn't expected this ^^ Discovered Summoning Salt 2 years ago, somebody on Discord already told "he knew what he was talking" about on Punch Out, but I didn't expected the “That runner… was me!” XD BIG stupid smile on my face :D
Around 4 years ago, I underwent brain surgery and was stuck in the hospital for over a month. After leaving, I couldnt really do any activities since the surgery left me unable to physically move for a while. DK64 had always been my favorite N64 game, so I decided to search for "DK64 speedrun" since longplays of the game were over 8 hours and came across your DK video. I was immediately hooked and ended up watching the rest of your videos that day. The videos motivated me to start running for myself and so I started with Limbo, pretty simple game. I tried for a couple of weeks and on one of my runs I got a PB which was in the top 10 spots (unrecorded just like Billy Mitchell). I was so proud of myself and told my parents and loved-ones about it and coming from a country in latin-america, they didnt really approve or show interest. It really hurts when someone that you love doesnt support you. I had loss the little motivation that I had left and stopped running. And even though I dont run anymore, I still watch every single one of your videos and I was so proud once I knew that you got a WR yourself. For some reason I thought you only did the commentary. Some of these moments warm my heart and get me a bit emotional, just like the moment Simply got WR and told his parents. I thank you for helping me out during tough times. Hope youre doing well and I'll be waiting for your next video. Hope this message gets to you my man. So proud.
i understand what you mean, but don't give up your passion my man. i, a random internet man, think your PB is something to be proud of. now go and improve it :)
Hell yeah brother. I've also had brain surgery and can relate to the awful recovery. Never ran Limbo but I did grind for deathless so I know it's definitely a challenge. Be proud.
Thanks for taking the time to write this. I loved reading it. I hope you know there's many people out there that will cheer you on even if your family or friends don't quite understand.
It's crazy how multi-talented SS is. If you think about it this is kind of like having a documentary about boxing written, voiced and directed by the actual Mike Tyson.
Not only has this man held that record for 8 years, but currently he is holding 6/7 of the Records for full game but also 4/14 records for individual level. complete domination
summoning has held the record since 2016 never boasted about it had this amazing speedrunner historian career we all know never tooted his own horn on one of the hardest games ever made bro, thank you.
This is like if a longtime ESPN show host busted out of his formal suit, threw on shoulderpads, and scored 8 frame-perfect touchdowns to win the Super Bowl.
@@hiimemily You are the only person I've ever seen in both jan misali and LRR comment sections, and now also Summoning Salt. You and I have a similar taste in youtube videos XD.
I think what blows me away most about this video is knowing you were setting these records while still making TH-cam content for numerous other world record categories and games. It really shows your dedication. Keep on keeping on!
Not mentioned here is that Summoning Salt also holds the record on: Mr Sandman (individual fight) (by less than half a second) Another World Circuit (a special mode) (by more than 15 seconds) RTA (the real-time clock count of the full run) (by 2 seconds) 90 minute challenge (you have 90 minutes to compile the best possible times in all fights) (by just under 8 seconds) Blindfolded (by two goddamn minutes) Mike Tyson (individual fight) (by 5 goddamn seconds) He is also tied for first on a variety of other individual fights (for example, tied with 17 others on King Hippo).
it's kinda funny his matt turk video spawned memes about how matt turk is unbeatable and whatnot in the comment sections of these videos, while most were unaware that salt himself has become the unbeatable punch out speedrunner for the past eight years
if i've learned one thing from these videos, it's that "runner retired" just means "will be back soon". there's some kind of strange magnetism between speedrunners and their categories that just won't let them leave
When all you do is play a single video game for weeks or months, I imagine it's hard to just stop doing it to play other games. It's so easy to just get back into doing what you were doing before
This is why alot of Boxers come back after their Initial retirement. These guys spend 2/3rds of their life training constantly every day for their career and it becomes drilled into them to be active. So when they retire it goes against everything they'd been focusing on for so much of their life, and that thrill of excitement stepping into the ring to do battle is unmatched. Thats why it's so hard for people to stay fully retired when doing things like that. It becomes coded into your DNA basically lol
What a great gift to have this uploaded on my birthday of all days. Completely and totally planned I'm certain :P It's so great to see this video after all these years. I'm glad to have been able to witness your progression with speedrunning and TH-cam videos from the very beginning, ultimately leading to the full Mike Tyson's Punch Out WR video finally taking form. I'm thankful to be able to call you a friend
I really like that Summoning Salt left in some of his rage moments. He could have framed this video to show how he has dominated this game for seven years, but he instead showed his frustrations and failures in between to show just how goddamn hard he's worked at this game.
he's always done that in these videos in general and i appreciate it. not only does it show just how difficult it is to get these world records but it keeps you in suspense that wouldn't exist if every run he showed was always guaranteed to be a record
Perhaps what I love the most about speedrunning is how sportsmanlike everyone is. The fact that the top two speedrunners were cheering you on as you beat them is such a great example.
One thing that this video illustrates beautifully is what drew me to speedruns in the first place. From Sinister reaching out to Matt Turk for early strats, to Zallard showing Sinister the Don 1 buffers, to both Sinister and Zallard showing up in chat to cheer you on, the collaborative aspect and community has always been this hubby's biggest strength, and it's kinda beautiful.
“this runner… was me.” choked me up. i’ve known about salts runs and his leaderboard times for a long time. the fact that he has only mentioned it now in this video is a testament to his respect for the players and love for the game. you are awesome salt and i hope you know how important you and your videos are to all of us. thanks for everything. can’t wait to see the next vid.
yeah, in his matt turk video he never mentioned it except for the small snippets at the end. i'm so glad he actually verbally talks about his own experiences in this video
Zallard and sinister encouraging the world record run is an amazing moment. Seen this happen quite a few times in these world record history videos and it really shows that they actually are communities where people work together towards a shared goal rather than just competing for their own ego.
One of the best examples I've seen was Fractal stopping his run to see and cheer on Blue Scuti as he takes the same goal as he is doing on Tetris, achieving the first ever true killscreen.
Wow, I'm floored! As a kid, I thought I was a champ at MTPO. Clicking on your video was like stepping into the ring with Mike Tyson himself - thrilling and totally unforgettable. Your passion and dedication have taken gaming documentaries to a whole new level. Seriously, Netflix, Hulu, Prime... are you watching this? This guy's making content that's a real 'knockout'!
The run to take the record for the first time with Zallard and sinister cheering you on in the background at 1:10:33 is one of the most heart warming moments I've seen on this channel. Words probably can't describe how appreciative you were in that moment.
I loved the feeling of this intense but very wholesome rivalry, and loved it even more when my engagement in that intensity was shattered by "the hippo manipo"... There could be no more perfect comic relief 😂
"it was me" literally brought tears to my eye bro what a twist. the man i have listened to for hours and hours and hours over these years.. hes the protagonist, not just the storyteller. this is magic
Summongsalt finally made a world record progression about himself, GOAT. Edit: I usually see people edit their comments to say "omg 1 trillion likes?!?!" But I just wanted to say that I like men💀.
This is so precious because it's about Salt having the record. We get to see him have the "happy gamer popoff" and get first person insight into the mentality of breaking a world record. I kinda figured that somebody who knows so much about speedrun records had some firsthand experience and I'm glad I got to know about it. Congratulations, Summoning Salt!
Relatively new to SS's channel, aren't you?! 🙂 He actually did start with Punch Out's History years ago and you can still find his records or record attempts in his other channel... Anyway welcome to the brigt side of speedrunning history! Now subscribe and binge through SS's older videos!!! 😉
Seeing Sinister1 and Zallard1 encourage and congrat SummoningSalt for the new world record made me happy. It's like a happy family who don't let anyone down. Theres no that competition vibe of who's gonna claim the WR first. They're just three dudes who enjoy the same game that they want to push it futher as possible.
It takes a visionary to see potential in an untapped market. Everyone was used to watching speedruns for years but summoning salt was the first to slow speed running down to show the trials and tribulations in between the world records. You are a great ambassador for video gaming.
The fact that you played the music Chris Doerksen dedicated in your name when you revealed your own name in the leaderboard makes it all the more beautiful. Thanks for everything you've done, both for TH-cam and the MTPO community. That's insane levels of dedication, congrats !
Brother, I'm halfway through and when you said the new contender was you I got chills and started to tear up. I'm a 35 y/o grown ass man, wtf is happening to me.
Man, I love the tone shift the video took once it got into Salt’s own reign over the record halfway through it. It went from documenting the records, its holders, change of strategies etc. in the typical thorough and accurate detail Salt’s become known for on top of his usual excellent and ever improving storytelling, to a personal soliloquy on his feelings grinding the record, taking it and then holding it, his respect of his competitors (especially zallard and sinister), his history with MTPO and speedrunning as a whole; even going into the little things like Tyson going from his weakness to his strength (he holds the WR on just the Tyson fight also btw), how much Don Flamenco kicked his ass, and his changing comfort level in holding the record. It’s so neat. And it’s not just the tone of the video itself either. It’s the tone of his actual voice that changes too. At 1:12:20 where he goes into getting back into beating his first WR, you can hear a combination of joy, pride (in a good way) and nostalgic reflection in his voice talking about getting back to the lab and on the grind on top of his sheer passion for the game. Just tops. The best part is? Even though you can tell the tone shifts, he still continues to explain everything about the game’s quirks and the development of the record (and his many failed attempts) with objectivity and doesn’t sound self-absorbed even slightly. He’s just happy as fuck dude, and he gets to own that shit. Fantastic video, probably my favorite he’s done and I’ve been watching for 6 years. Now drop and give me 14:3X.
It's also amazing pacing wise because it happens at the half way point of the video around a hour and 8 minutes in, making it feel not to early (as the beginning half felt like any other video) but not too late. This is definitely his Magnum Opus and im so proud of him for this
Dear Summoning Salt, Your video several years ago regarding the Quest to Beat Matt Turk is still to this day one of my most favorite TH-cam videos of all time. I grew up in an NES and Mike Tyson era, and the nostalgia that I get from watching your detailed breakdowns are soothing to a troubled mind. To now discover that you did all that research, all that time and effort, only to take up the mantle in order to take the sport to a new level while the GOATs cheered you on … It makes my heart happy for you. Bravo brother, bravo.
There are a number of other Categories that Salt has the WR on, including Tied ones: Another World Circuit: A secret bonus mode that you can access with a unique passcode while holding A, B, and Select simultaneously. It has 9 fights and ends at Mike Tyson. Strangely, it gives you the decimal time for Tyson here. Salt's WR is an 11:34 90 Minute Challenge: Construct an IL Sum Of Best within 90 minutes. You can start on any fighter you want, and the cut-off to start your last fight is when the timer hits 90 minutes. Salt's WR is a 14:21, 25 seconds ahead of the Single Segment WR and 4 seconds ahead of Matt Turk's Sum of Best (Yep, we might actually beat Turk's Sum of Best with a Single Segment run! Crazy). RTA: Basically just Single Segment with a real-time timer instead of in-game. Some strategies are changed around and there is a truckload of more RNG in play. Salt recently lost his longstanding 18:36 WR to KThree's 18:34, but took it right back the next day with an 18:32. Blindfolded: Pretty self-explanatory. Salt made a video about this, and then got the WR a few years later. He's brought the time down to 18:03. Tyson Challenge: You know how Single Segment is getting through 14 fights from Glass Joe to Mike Tyson while adding the times up? Now imagine that, but it's all Mike Tyson. Salt's WR is 32:14 (Average per fight is 2:18) IL Times: Glass Joe: It's a freebie with many buffer strats to get it. In fact, it's why the category was eventually removed. Still, it's a WR. Some buffer strats do have a possibility of getting you a 42.25 instead of a 42.00. Von Kaiser: It involves 50-50 stars, and _Quest to Beat Matt Turk_ goes more in-depth about it, but Salt has recently joined the TAS Perfect 35.61 club on Speedrun started by Zallard many years back. Don Flamenco: Another freebie thanks to the buffer strat. A ton of people got that 14.97, and Salt is one of the first players with recorded proof on Speedrun. King Hippo: Thanks to Hippo Manippo, the TAS Perfect 37.61 has become a lot more consistent (still hard to pull off, but at least it's more consistent). Only 18 Players on Speedrun, Salt included, have gotten it. Great Tiger: Phase 1 is the only difficult portion with the 4 Frame Perfects you have to land, but at least he always gets up on a 1 count if you get Phase 1 right, meaning you can just buffer an uppercut for Phase 2 and 3 and boom, fight's over. Salt and 18 other players have gotten the 47.48 WR. Honda 2: As a result of Max Damage Uppercuts, McHazard managed to make an improved Honda 2 Perfect Time with a TAS, a time of 39.97, which Salt would eventually get. JLet and Jefeman82 got it too. Sandman: Because you can't get stars in Round 1, he takes the longest. The time has been gradually brought down and was stuck at a 2:16.82 (first achieved by Lucandor) for a long while before Salt was able to get perfect luck and execution and get a 2:16.48, another perfect time according to McHazard's TAS. Mike Tyson: Salt's first World Record Progression (or at least the oldest surviving one) was about the Mike Tyson WR. For a long time, it was believed that 2:05 was the lowest time anyone could get, which Salt would be first to achieve. However, McHazard's TAS revealed that you can start Phase 3 with an uppercut, but Phase 2 has to end at a mid-1:25 at the latest. To this day, Salt is the only known player with recorded proof to achieve this AND a sub-2:05, bringing the time down to a 2:00.61 (decimal time found by old-school frame counting). TAS time is 1:58, but I do believe 1:59 is possible
Let's be fair, making world record progressions featuring his own world records is how this entire series started. This is back to his roots, honestly.
Yeah. It's super easy to go "To avoid appearing biased, I won't cover my runs," but he did a very good job here. His descriptions didn't feel overly praising, and didn't feel any different from his usual narration.
guess i was one of the few that knew it, i remember a post on reddit( i think it wasin r/gaming) tha tthe record was lowered, people said "send this to Summoning Salt" their surprise that OP from that post was him
2 hours of Summoning Salt explaining how he is the best boxer in the history of gaming, and yes I'm all for it congrats on all of the speedrunning categories you rightfully occupy top spot on
This video was awesome!! I'm an animator and usually have long videos on in the background to keep me entertained while working, but this one kept distracting me because it was just so good. My jaw completely dropped when he said "This runner was me"
It's almost crazy to me that you talking about your own achievements could somehow be even more humbling. From making it clear that it wouldn't have happened without Zallard & Sinister cheering you on, to the absolutely brutal grind, it puts just how insane this world record is into perspective. Massive props to you and everyone else who speedruns the game!
You are standing among the very few historians that make it into history themselves. Huge respect for what you've achieved on this channel and in your runs. 🙏
Not to mention all the other videos he made about this game without ever mentioning himself. He truly loves this community and history, his passion is undeniable
In the Matt Turk video, he doesn't mention himself until the very end when he's showing all the current WRs for each fight and shows that he's the Tyson WR holder. He doesn't even mention it out loud
A really cool milestone that I don't think has gotten talked about enough is the fact that Matt Turk's sum of WR's from 2008 is a 14:25.05. We're slowly approaching that territory. And I think one day it could happen. Probably from you.
"On the evening of December 15th, 2023, things ticked along much like they had any other day. A newcomer named TheSalltt had just finished finals, and was about to knock off for the evening when he noticed Summoning Salt had uploaded an historic video. The internet was abuzz with chatter about this incredible new upload. No one quite understood what would happen next. But one man knew what he had to do.... This is the story of the comment thread...of TheSalltt"
This is more than a speedrun documentary. This is a love letter to speedrunning in general, and what it personally means to SummoningSalt Congrats on your best video to date. I am eager for the future.
Bro, I just gotta say your vids are my favorite among all of TH-cam. I live a very stressful life and being someone who grew up in the early 80’s, the days of the NES were the best years of my life and to make a long story short, watching your vids gives me peace. I can come home from work and sit back and put on (for example) the history of castlevania world records and within 30 min, my stress is gone. I really appreciate the difference you have made in my life! Just had to tell you that.
Salt, to say you’re one of the legends of the speedrunning community would be an understatement. Your humbleness and constant dedication to documenting speedruns, all while showing you’ve got the skill to back up what you talk about, that’s incredible.
One day, maybe months or years from now, the video "The Quest to beat SummoningSalt" will arrive. In the meantime, congrats on continuing a 7+ year hold on the #1 spot. What an absolutely incredible accomplishment.
imo hes the greatest speedrunner of all time. dominated in countless games and was usually simultaneously the guy to push a games boundaries far past what was seen before. he is in every sense of the word a legend
@@DrunkenHoteihighly disagree, SS is great but turks legacy is second to none, almost all his records may be broken now but his impact won't be forgotten
Its so heartwarming hearing you say "One punch at a time" years after it was first said to you on world record pace. Shows how far even a little bit of encouragement can push a person. Never stop.
@@sethblack7413lol better then me, I have to get a C at Orgo to take Orgo II, if not then that’s a 10k dollar setback cause my school being hella expensive
This guy is so humble. When another speedrunner gets a really good fight he hypes it up with dramatic music and everything. And then when he gets a perfect Tyson he is just like yeah, I got it perfect for the first time in a run.
Like everyone else, I smiled when you said that "That runner... was me." In my case, I knew it was coming at some point, but I didn't know the history to know when. You are an incredible documentary maker, and I am so happy for you and your success.
“This runner… was me.” My mouth was wide open. Seeing SS as a storyteller, maybe the greatest storyteller that speedrunning history has ever seen, is a thing. We all are used to seeing some rare footage of clutch moments from the best speedrunners in the world, stacking the puzzle of the best moments in videogame speedrunning history piece by piece, with an iconic background music and some real talent at script writing and telling. But then you watch this, and you realize that Summoning Salt, the same guy you’ve always watched keeping you on the edge of the seat for every world record broken in every game possible, is that same guy that set every WR ever in Punch-Out history for more than 3 years (if I’m not mistaken), breaching the sub-15 and sub-14.50 barrier for the first time ever, without anyone ever getting close to the same time, and basically being one of the best players ever existing at this game… I’m not seeing this man the same ever again. If you told me that he was a good speedrunner, well… I would have believed it. Sure, you can have time and talent to spend, and learn most tricks in order to get really competitive. But to get to be world-class, and actually clinch to the WR, and stand on top for it for all this time… you’re just the best Punch-Out player in the world, at least at the moment. Very good work of yours man. I sure didn’t expect this. At all. And by far, that’s all deserved after all you’ve done for the speedrunning community and TH-cam in general. That’s just one more achievement for you. Keep strong on this. Sincerely, an anonymous Italian fan of yours, who’s almost crying in joy after seeing that you’ve actually made it into a speedrunning WR
I didn't expect the new Summoning Salt video to be about Summoning Salt. It was a very well put together video, and perhaps because of how personal it was and how much having your own data to add to it helps, I feel like this video illustrates just how much time and work goes into speedrunning. Seeing that graph take shape shows how many runs can fall apart before a new best happens. Congrats on having the record for as long as you have. I already had a lot of respect for your work, but seeing how humble you are at being a world record holder has made that respect grow exponentially.
Also goes to show just how brutal MTPO runs are. Due to how wildly inconsistent the luck can be it isn't like other speedruns where you can just reset if you failed, you almost always have to play it through every single time. I still love how this speedrun history video is literally written by Salt too, makes it more meaningful
Hey, you banned me from your chat when I was like 12. That was devastating at the time. Finding something to obsess over and watch every day only to be overtly excluded was not a great feeling. Especially when I didn't understand that I was probably being annoying. But still.
I'm not crying, I'm sweating happiness.from my eyes. This channel is legitimately the only connection I have to the gaming community and I'm more than pleased with that
You're not missing much. It's toxic - not in an early Xbox lobby swearing and profanity fun, but spoiled and entitled and slovenly children It's full of liars and cheats. And worst of all it's full of simps, stans, and moral-less heathens acting like it's OF-lite
Salt, I have been watching you for years, for so many years, and the fact that you finally mentioned yourself in a video, perhaps the greatest one you've made so far, makes me extremely happy! happy to have seen your growth and development, both as a storyteller, and a speedrunner! please keep this going and never let up!! I can't believe that since 2017 I have been on this journey!!!
I experience difficulty with sportsmanship and admitting defeat but seeing Zallard and Sinister encouraging you and helping you calm down even with a world record at stake helped me take away something today. I hope it did for other people as well. Phenomenal stuff, guys. Thank you for teaching me something despite the fact that I don't even speedrun.
Always remember this. People with talent have often have no drive because they are already good. People with drive hate to lose. People with drive and talent succeed on the backs of those that push them to be better by setting the bar. A winner always loves the accolades -- they always want to be on top, but those waiting in the wings use the fact they aren't on top to reach those heights. When you see this, you understand that someone else's win is a win for you. They just helped you by moving the bar. Go reach it. :-) (Alexa, play Remember the Name by Fort Minor lol)
That's seriously one of my favorite parts about speedrunning. The top runners/speedrunner community for a game all equally want to see the best time get lower! And they know how nerve wracking it is to be on pace and how heartbreaking it is to lose a really good pace. Generally the communities are really supportive, its awesome
I love the wholesome rivalries all throughout this journey man. I know that the whole "worthy foe" and "live for the challenge" ideas have mostly become an anime/comic thing, but it's just so cool to see that attitude among the top speedrunners here - Zallard, Sinister, KThree and SummoningSalt himself all happily congratulating each other and cheering each other on even when they are actively seeking to beat each other's records. Kudos to SummongSalt in particular for managing to be objective about your own record while still (rightfully) being proud and happy about it all. Beautiful, I say!
Not to downplay the accomplishments, but one thing that I think helps make speedrunning such a positive space is that there isn't money involved. That, plus the fact that runners all stand on each other's shoulders by using discovering and strategies discovered by others. Everyone understands that at the end of the day, it's kind of a group effort that the whole community can share in -- even if you're not the one on top in the end.
A friend of mine recently said there needed to be a speedrunners hall of fame. I told him there already is. It's called 'being featured in a Summoningsalt video.'
The look of joy I had on my face when summoningsalt said he was the runner… I just couldn’t contain a grin.. thank you for making these and giving these runners a chance to shine in the spotlight. I’m sure us as the viewer, and the runners, are super appreciative of you. I am also very glad to see you in your own video LOL
Had no clue you even were a speed runner yourself. So often I play your videos while I'm doing something else and while cleaning my apartment I heard "This runner was me.". I immediately sat on my couch and finished the video. Great content as always and very humble of you for keeping the story so long awesome vid!
Same here, I was gonna spend my evening playing videogames until I heard that line. I've been subscribed to SummoningAlt for a while and cheered on his new record, but didn't know how he'd approach this video given his treatment of his other records. Once I heard that line and saw half the video was left to go, I sat down and watched the whole thing.
34:30 - I think this is also a brilliant idea for people who aren't currently the WR holder too. When you're trying to improve, do a Segmented run and set THAT as your intermediate target. It seems like a very good way to stay motivated.
Man, Sinister and Zallard cheering Salt on and just everybody's whole demeaner reminds me why I love watching speedrunning content. The community in general, though obviously there will always be some exceptions, is just so wholesome and supportive. Everyone gets so genuinely excited when there's a new record, even when they might be frustrated that they didn't get it/had it taken away. Just amazing sportsmanship
I actually cried when you said "that runner...was me" after all the effort you have done to cover all these amazing runs and records, seeing you up there (even though i knew it was already the case) literally made me tear up. You are amazing at storytelling, thank you for such beautiful content.

Truly a master of his craft, and a pioneer of the world record progression style! Keep up the amazing videos, we all love you SS! ❤ Edit: I’ve never heard Summoning Salt mad before 😂
@@everything.editzz as much as i think he has the potential, i think matt turk is always going to be on top, beaten or not. he was a pioneer of his time and the best in his day, he both helped modern punch out speedrunners learn strategies new to them and still had some competition with those who invented new ones, releasing a couple new records during the community wide quest to surpass him.
I wish I had thumbs so I could beat his record....the doctor promised me as a child they'd grow in eventually, guess it was wishful thinking....but I'll still give him two indexes up

I just love anything that people take seriously and put their passion and dedication into. This was a brilliant video and good effort from everyone. I also just love the way the speedrunning communities support each other and big each other up. Its really honestly beautiful.
So of course I knew that you are the most acclaimed documentarian in the speedrunning community. I also knew that you were a Punch Out world record holder. However, what i did NOT know, is that you have been doing both SIMULTANEOUSLY for years! That is truly amazing levels of talent.
What’s wild to me is how you have the time to dedicate to both grinding this hard and analysing the shit out of your own runs AS WELL AS creating brilliant engaging and well edited videos, you got me hooked this whole time
So I didn't really realize you were also a speedrunner. This is a bit like hearing stories from an asylum for years, only to realize the narrator has been an inmate this whole time. Y'all are insane, good shit. With how much shine you've given other runners, you actually earned making a feature-length video about your own journey, too. Absolutely mad, the lot of you.
I had litaral tears in my eyes when you said "that was me". Seing you make a video about the game that created your passion and love for speedrunning is so damn awesome. Please continue making these documentaries as long as possible. Your TH-cam chanel is truely one of a kind and will always have a special place in my heart.
It's extremely evident how much passion you have about this game from the way you talk about it. No regrets staying up until 2am the night before Christmas to experience this.
Congratulations brother! I’m so glad you got to experience the feeling of greatness. You left a legacy for others to look back on. You’re an actual OG. My brother loved this game. Tyson's 8-second delay is one of the biggest mockeries for a speedrunner in any game. He just does his little dance in your face and you can't do anything about it.
FR
It's also 50/50 which just makes it more brutal, a WR run could be killed by a very sudden coin flip right at the end
@@otavioferreira3405that’s why you gotta play it enough times to get to that position and no meet bad rng
imagine being on wr pace and he does this jfc lol
@@corbinmerla3451usually that’s a fair assessment but with MTPO it’s literally like 70% rng. So being on wr pace is just as much luck as it is skill.
I think Salt really understates how amazing his achievement is. No one but him has held the record in almost EIGHT YEARS.
Don't think anyone has even gotten under 15. Let alone get there multiple times.
It's like he's been waiting for someone else to take his title, so he can make a video about THEM instead.

I love the dichotomy between how gentle Salt's voice is vs his totally understandable gamer rage

Your raw talent and sportsmanship displayed in this video was insanely commendable. Not to diminish summoningsalt's hard work and dedication, but your work with this game (and zallard) was perhaps a huge factor in influencing what summoningsalt has become today. 🐐

I love that so much of the frustration with Tyson is from the 8 second delay he does. The idea of of losing a run to "He's just standing there! MENACINGLY!" is frustrating, but also quite funny.
Exactly what Mike himself would do
Gotta love when Summoning Salt talks about Punch Out and gets to go into first person for once

@@ros9764as it should! the speedrunning community should strive for and promote respect for one another.

I thank you for helping me out during tough times.

if i've learned one thing from these videos, it's that "runner retired" just means "will be back soon". there's some kind of strange magnetism between speedrunners and their categories that just won't let them leave
Mhm, the thing that always make me think of this is the Andrewg come back to the warpless smb1 category, those guys are too competitive to sit around
Its similar to professional wrestling except the speedruners have less brain damage and steroids.

You got the WR, I'm in full tears now
Man, I love the tone shift the video took once it got into Salt’s own reign over the record halfway through it.
Beautiful summary :)
It's also amazing pacing wise because it happens at the half way point of the video around a hour and 8 minutes in, making it feel not to early (as the beginning half felt like any other video) but not too late. This is definitely his Magnum Opus and im so proud of him for this

To now discover that you did all that research, all that time and effort, only to take up the mantle in order to take the sport to a new level while the GOATs cheered you on …
It makes my heart happy for you. Bravo brother, bravo.
There are a number of other Categories that Salt has the WR on, including Tied ones:
Another World Circuit: A secret bonus mode that you can access with a unique passcode while holding A, B, and Select simultaneously. It has 9 fights and ends at Mike Tyson. Strangely, it gives you the decimal time for Tyson here. Salt's WR is an 11:34
90 Minute Challenge: Construct an IL Sum Of Best within 90 minutes.
Salt's WR is 32:14 (Average per fight is 2:18)
IL Times:
Glass Joe: It's a freebie with many buffer strats to get it.
Fantastic comment, thank you for gathering this information and putting it all in once place

I cannot wait for Salt to beat Tyson in under 2 minutes. It'll be one of the greatest speedrunning achievements of all time

@@Y3ntiLS0uP So you're telling me there's a chance ;)
I know I'm probably beating a dead horse at this point, but Sinister and Zallard cheering you on legitimately made me cry.
Are you at least doing frame perfect punches?
My man really had the nutsack to make a video that fully includes him. Massive respect my guy, I used to watch your runs all the time.
Let's be fair, making world record progressions featuring his own world records is how this entire series started. This is back to his roots, honestly.
@misirtere9836 honestly? Agreed. Time is a flat circle and all that mumbo jumbo
Yeah. It's super easy to go "To avoid appearing biased, I won't cover my runs," but he did a very good job here. His descriptions didn't feel overly praising, and didn't feel any different from his usual narration.
It''s about an hour into the video before Salt is mentioned, but then it's all him the rest of the way
To spend an hour not knowing this was going to be about your speedrun was insane. My mind exploded. Congratulations on such an amazing feat
Bro, that reveal went crazy🎉
guess i was one of the few that knew it, i remember a post on reddit( i think it wasin r/gaming) tha tthe record was lowered, people said "send this to Summoning Salt" their surprise that OP from that post was him
i mean he uploaded so many speedrun world records on his second chnannel
Aye! Feels that plus all the videos on the channel leading up to this. This goes so hard!!
feels like the finale of this channel, at least i hope thats not true
2 hours of Summoning Salt explaining how he is the best boxer in the history of gaming, and yes I'm all for it congrats on all of the speedrunning categories you rightfully occupy top spot on
This is like the world's best humblebrag and I'll here for it. Insane talent and mental fortitude.
This video was awesome!! I'm an animator and usually have long videos on in the background to keep me entertained while working, but this one kept distracting me because it was just so good. My jaw completely dropped when he said "This runner was me"
1:06:08 this was the most epic SummoningSalt moment yet. As someone who doesn't follow you outside of TH-cam I was NOT prepared for this.
I just watched a 2 hour documentary on a game I’ve never played and I couldn’t be more satisfied, amazing.
Hey same!
Fr
I didn’t even know this was a thing. He is like the Mr. Ballen of speed runs, I couldn’t turn it off.
@@swisscheez4256lol, just found mrballen in February myself and I binged all his videos. Funny you mention that
What an achievement!
Rip likes 😂
You are standing among the very few historians that make it into history themselves.
Huge respect for what you've achieved on this channel and in your runs.
🙏
Herodotus moment.
I'm blown away at how tasteful and respectful this video was. Over an hour in before you even mention yourself. Respect.
because there was plenty to talk about than himself
Not to mention all the other videos he made about this game without ever mentioning himself. He truly loves this community and history, his passion is undeniable
In the Matt Turk video, he doesn't mention himself until the very end when he's showing all the current WRs for each fight and shows that he's the Tyson WR holder. He doesn't even mention it out loud
A really cool milestone that I don't think has gotten talked about enough is the fact that Matt Turk's sum of WR's from 2008 is a 14:25.05. We're slowly approaching that territory. And I think one day it could happen. Probably from you.
Yep. ~21 seconds to go.
Or Kthree.
That -22 second split coming into Mike Tyson from Zallard1 was crazy.
as someone who only absorbs speed run content through you, the absolute shock i felt when you said "that runner... was myself" was insane
Same, I didn't know he was a dominant punch out player so it was a very effective twist. Great job, legend.
Being able to watch a 2 hour long SummoningSalt video after a week of finals is so damn cathartic
Just turned in my last final to graduate today, and now I get to relax and fall asleep to this. It’s perfection
Well played, sir. That was a good one.
Mama we made it
For you. For you it is. Thank goodness we are all different
This is more than a speedrun documentary.
This is a love letter to speedrunning in general, and what it personally means to SummoningSalt
Congrats on your best video to date.
And that would make everything come full circle and cement Salt's humility. Amen
Matt Turk is an absolute legend and always has been
True, but SS is clearly in the same league.
The dude is so good at Punchout that runners don’t even need to see proof. No vid, no did never applied to the legend Matt Turk
imo hes the greatest speedrunner of all time. dominated in countless games and was usually simultaneously the guy to push a games boundaries far past what was seen before. he is in every sense of the word a legend
Always has been? Did you or almost anyone else know who he was before these videos?
@@DrunkenHoteihighly disagree, SS is great but turks legacy is second to none, almost all his records may be broken now but his impact won't be forgotten
1:42:37 bro played so well that he decided to play punch out irl
Hella underrated
Its so heartwarming hearing you say "One punch at a time" years after it was first said to you on world record pace. Shows how far even a little bit of encouragement can push a person. Never stop.
A 2 hour Summoning Salt video is always a good time, especially after finals

Actual chills, man. I knew it was coming, and yet, your storytelling is just that good.
Mike Tyson at 58 years old could not get punched out by Jake Paul.
His legend continues 🫡
For those curious, that once in a lifetime RNG run had ~1/3100 odds
Compared with some of the other speedruns that have been showcased on this channel, those odds seem downright reasonable.
If you don’t mind me asking, which one? He used that phrase a decent amount of times throughout the video.
Once in a lifetime 'cause only one person is trying it.
69th upvote
Not really that bad tbh. those don’t even feel like speedrunning values just normal
“This runner… was me.”
My mouth was wide open.
But then you watch this, and you realize that Summoning Salt, the same guy you’ve always watched keeping you on the edge of the seat for every world record broken in every game possible, is that same guy that set every WR ever in Punch-Out history for more than 3 years (if I’m not mistaken), breaching the sub-15 and sub-14.50 barrier for the first time ever, without anyone ever getting close to the same time, and basically being one of the best players ever existing at this game…
I’m not seeing this man the same ever again.
Sincerely,
an anonymous Italian fan of yours, who’s almost crying in joy after seeing that you’ve actually made it into a speedrunning WR
Imagine being the GOAT at Speedrun story telling and punch out simultaneously, like wtf
Awesome stuff!
For real! It's crazy to see just how fast people can plow through these back to back.
wow. Didn't know you watched Summoning Salt
Yooo
Hey, you banned me from your chat when I was like 12. That was devastating at the time. Finding something to obsess over and watch every day only to be overtly excluded was not a great feeling. Especially when I didn't understand that I was probably being annoying. But still.

I can't believe that since 2017 I have been on this journey!!!
you know what's crazy?
in a few years time, someone is going to make a "The Quest to Beat SummoningSalt" video.
Holding a record since 2016 in speedrunning is insane. Anyone who takes it from him will have earned it
Somehow reminds me of “I got the part I got the part, I am gonna be Joey Tribbiani’s ass”
It'll probably be him and have this video attached to the front of it again
Probably summoning salt himself
Lol, same here. I was in the middle of kneading some bread, then the reveal, and I had to stop and watch the video.
I actually cried when you said "that runner...was me"
after all the effort you have done to cover all these amazing runs and records, seeing you up there (even though i knew it was already the case) literally made me tear up. You are amazing at storytelling, thank you for such beautiful content.

as much as i think he has the potential, i think matt turk is always going to be on top, beaten or not. he was a pioneer of his time and the best in his day, he both helped modern punch out speedrunners learn strategies new to them and still had some competition with those who invented new ones, releasing a couple new records during the community wide quest to surpass him.
