shoutouts to the 2000's community for inspiring inichi to go all in on CT. what a legend.
I literally grew up on this
i knew this would be about inichi as soon as i read the title. having been around tasvideos long enough to watch this all happen, the things he did for that game and its speedruns have made them inseparable for me. inichi IS chrono trigger in my mind, and it's gonna stay that way for as long as i live.
Hero of the day is LEGENDARY. My favorite TAS theyve ever been a part of can be found by searching "Super Metroid Reverse Boss Order "Taco, Kriole, Hero of The Day". This run is like MYTHICAL.
on your reccomendation, that's the next video i'm gonna watch.
Whenever a player or speedrunner comes out of nowhere with absolutely wild time claims and no video evidence like Inichi did, I get so excited. Because it’s always followed either by a fraud getting called out, or the beginnings of an absolute prodigy who’ll shape the course of speedrunning forever. There’s no in-between.
It's true, either Jobst or salt will show up.
What the heck is with the wobbly filter on the video? It's horribly distracting.
I actually checked your youtube page a few hours ago looking for a new upload. I was a few hours early. Thank you! You're my favorite youtuber and I've rewatched many of your videos a bunch already. Stay hydrated!
These speedrun retrospective videos understate David "marshmallow" Gibbons and his contributions to early speedrunning. Absolute legend.
yes, david gibbons, the famous _jet force gemini_ runner. i was like uhhh is this the same marshmallow? lol

It just makes me so happy people are still playing these games I loved as a kid in 2024. I would have never ever guessed that 20+ years later people would still be enjoying the OG jrpg's.
This game is amazing. Played it for the first time earlier this year. As soon as I beat it I immediately started a new game due to the game being just that amazing.
I last played it over a decade ago, and now I really want to redo a run
Great to see people still discovering this game.
Loved this vid. It's too short! Some stuff in the LSS explanation tickled my ears; 8,0 is not really the target coordinate, but in fact it's (8,8) AND up through (8,0), all of which are good (the party attempts to run Down to the gate position upon loading in, and happens to walk across the Lavos Shell "door"!)
I can really tell that all the info presented here was sourced carefully, and I don't doubt 8,0 is mentioned in there somewhere.
10:11 P 10:bbb11 1 10:11 10:11 10:11 10:11 0p:bb😂😂😊😊
Will always love to hear legend of dragoon music. Gives me MAJOR nostalgia vibes.
As they say, "Sometimes to beat a game, you got to break it over your knee."
Fantastic editing as always! And a great story and explanation as well!
wow absolutely insane. Inichi was a real pioneer
Speedrunners are so cool on how they can figure all this stuff out!
Thanks man I needed this one. CT is one of my favourite games and I love the speedrun it's so interesting to know its history
I don't care WHO you are but the whole TAS community will break ANY game into tears, no matter how old the game is. This video shows just that, and it was ONE dude that did it.
Keep up the good work TAS guys. Also great video 😀
babe wake up, new doctorswellman video dropped
I loved CT back in the day, even though I played a German emulation, but tbh. I always asked myself how this game would be breakable long before I knew speedruns existed or stumbled upon my first speedrun on the internet. I saw a CT speedrun two years ago and was deeply impressed how bosses were skipped, how items were used to confuse the RAM and manip the RNG. :D I love the story of this game and just for clarification: I also love speedruns of such games. It's just the cherry on top. :D
alright doc you have inspired me to play through this game again sometime soon
No rather then that, go to the Gym.
I’m just liking and commenting to videos that look interesting to spread a kind deed. Now I want to watch the whole video🍿
Though I'll NEVER speed run this game the HEAL above max HP glitch was NOT FIXED in the DS remake of the game it still works on BOTH Lavos and the Ending 13 boss to kill them both with the Die under the Green Dream accessory then heal them with Elixers.
NOBODY gives a fuck about you, and your comment has ZERO relevance to the subject.
Awesome history of this run, what a crazy origin to the skips and the equipment stat boost.
Amazing video. Props to you for doing such in-depth research.
10:45 you can do this in super mario rpg snes, but only if the loading zone starts a cutscene if certain quota are met. Examples are the loading zones in the main area in yo'ster isle, both loading zones in the 8 bit mario room on boosters tower, or the pit in booster pass.
damn mad respect to inichi that guys awesome
When you read the title and you're like "Oh, this is the story of sub-frame resets?"
E
And thank you for covering such a legend. I didnt know him until now ❤
Babe wake up new doctor swellman just dropped
Decent analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
The music choices take me back, especially Legend of Dragoon and Duelists of the Roses.
There is something very nostalgic over seeing a link to an Angelfire website. Holy hell, I went back to being 20 years old.
Dat dragoon music got me at the start, so good
I heard the first note of that CrossCode song, and immediately recognized it.
8:15 Good job using the game mechanics to your advantage with that buildm
Nice summary. Just one question. Who the heck is Marley? Marle ends in a silent 'e'. It rhymes with Carl.
Thank you for sharing this ❤️
Loved this! Also the forbidden memories soundtrack giving me PTSD haha!
I was expecting it to be Matt Turk.
Off-topic question, but how did you do the ''shaking'' effect present during all over the video?
I'm an animator, and knowing how to do that would help me save a lot of time when drawing ''still'' frames.
Also, really nice video. Didn't knew that Chrono Trigger could be TAS'd in the first place lol.
@@theinbunch1380 I think I used turbulent displace on the objects I did it on, then set a time expression on evolution. If you need a detailed tutorial, search “after effects boil effect” and it should come up with what you need
When the runners/tassers playing the game are much more terrifying than the giant planet devouring vilain of the game.
Ive bought this game but never played it... imma give it a try this weekend
Wow. Inichi is the CT speedrunning version of Billy Mays. “You think I’m done?! Just wait, there’s more!!”
Legend of dragoon music?? Let's gooo

2:14 giant space tick
I really don't mean this as an attack, but the flickering on the sides of your video here actually gave me a headache
Maybe it was Lavos glitching Inichi the whole time, to aid in his quest to eat that world
Neat. C-trigger was a great story, but the music was EXEMPLARY.
You can’t hit me with the royal castle theme and not want me to ask for a speed run of LoD
Everything is in Dr. Katz vision
5:13 That's a name! Sir_VG! He's really active on the FFXIV subreddit and does a lot of solo clear stuff for FFXIV.
Is the marshmallow you talk about in the beginning David Gibbons, or a different marshmallow? If so, only mentioning Jet Force Gemini given how _extremely_ prolific he is is odd. or hilarious. not sure.
Legend of Dragoon music is amazing
Duelist Rose music goated
I dont consider any of these methods gamebreaking for CT. CT is about the manipulation of time, potential, existence, fate and memory. The methods used are to me all in line with the themes of CT.
Great video m8
"Primitive version of google translate" people were probably shoving that thing into Babelfish tbh
15:35 Question: why does it wrap around to 0? If the upper limit is 32768, it probably means the value is a signed 32 bit integer, but in that case, an overflow would result in wrapping around -32769.
Am I missing something? like do they clamp hp to 0?
This also confused me. It doesn't make much sense for anything to happen at 16384, because that isn't anywhere near the max value of a 16 bit signed integer, which is 32767. As you say that would wrap to a negative number, -32768.
Yes as I understand it, the negative value is invalid so error handling does just set HP to 0.
It might be because the heal value is above 32767, wrapping it to negative and the game reduces the health because negative healing = health loss
Yay new video!
Why would anyone want to speed run Chrono Trigger? It's like speed eating a perfectly grilled steak.
Marley?
I only knew you had a new vid because this played after a ffx vid...
Aw fuck yeah. Thank you.
Me about to play the game for the first time
SMT 5 OST Chad

thank you for reminding me to drink water i def needed it
wild
Chrono trigger vid and starts with lod music lol
5:21 that reads "i-n-i-chi", not "i-ni-chi"
Epic tale
All this time, CT was a bethesda game in disguise.
Great game.
What's the opposite of E?
cool vid
How do people find these, wtf? O_O
What's up with the jiggle filter
Not a fan of the many "slowly reading forum posts" bits, the "here are the tricks and where they came from" bits are much much more interesting
How do I get inichi interested in Star Fox Adventures? 😜
yooooo
E
For another swelly banger!

3.
It's wild what someone can do just to say they did it.
"I-n-i-chi" as opposed to "I-ni-chi"...In'ichi as opposed to I'nichi. How interesting.
Yeah I have to admit myself that the wobble affect you added to the video Doc is really messing with my ability to focus on what you're saying. I love your videos but it's too distracting to soak in all the information you're trying to give us.
Yep, I'm catching that feedback here and I'll make sure it's fixed for the next video!
It's not a discovery. The code was always there. Celebrate indigenous instructions!

tldw: he gave himself items using glitches/buffer overflow
Guess i wont be able to watch this since i have to still play the game :/
Don't wanna spoil myself watching
Glitches are for weaklings
Inichi's comments in English are obviously posted by someone comepletely fluent in English, not a native Japanese speaker using outdated translate technology.
Even now, translation struggles with the nuances of context between the two languages, and yet Inichi's post shows him using perfectly written language claiming poor understanding of English?
"Though my English is poor, I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have"
No, dude, no Japanese person now speaks English like that, much less before 2016. That's a completely unnatural way of structuring language for a native japanese speaker.
An example of what a Japanese speaker using translation would really look like is:
"Though (my) English is poor, Happily I'll answer all questions presented". They literally do not have the same subject verb predicate as English, nor is translation capable of fully replicating the nuances of how the structure of language changes.
Sus content at the start with no discernment tells me this isn't a video about facts, it's a narrative to spread hype. No thanks.
While you're correct about it being highly unusual, all of the facts perfectly check out.
Unless someone with genius levels of dedication to Chrono Trigger decided to impersonate a Japanese player for over 5 years.. which doesn't make sense. People impersonate others to leech off of their popularity, not to make the person that they're impersonating more famous and popular when they could be taking all of that for themselves.
Japanese is a complicated language but it stands to reason that even in 2008 there were people in Japan with high proficiency in the english language who decided to use their skills for their niche gaming interests. Is it really a more unusual than a professional translator making an english patch for Mother 3 and releasing it in 2008?
@@panthekirb7561 My only point is that something doesn't add up, and given there was no follow up scrutiny on such on obvious deviation from the norm, it stands to reason that other such discrepencies may follow.
If you want my first, baseless assumption, I would guess that the player Inichi never existed at all, just a westerner who posted a fake record on a Japanese site knowing they could get away with it, who happened to actually be somewhat proficient going foreward to cover up their tracks. There was no original record, just a follow up to cover potential lies.
That's the first assertion I can reason, with very little effort put in. It stands to reason that it could go either way.
@@AtmatanOh my god you sound insufferable, even if you were correct (you're not) I'm gonna disagree with you out of spite
@@Atmatan Well you know how people are. Maybe if he'd say something like "Inichi has unusual english skills for a Japanese person" there'd be woke people sending him death threats for being racist or whatever.
@@panthekirb7561 Weird fallacy. Doubtful it'd happen. It's usually people who insult others as 'woke' proven to be the most violent.
One man bends legendary game to its knees. More at 11.
It's simply amazing how much this man discovered
This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!
If he broke speedrunning then does that mean nobody can do it anymore?
yes
