The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

Hon I'm an American from the States I live in NC and I saw your video about the duck 🦆 you should go to court over that she broke the rules but if I had the money 💸 I'd love to see England both sides of my family came from there and I'd love to see your estate from what I've seen of it its beautiful and I see you have a ghost 👻 and that's wonderful I hope he/she is active and not aggressive I've never been to England I've seen just about every movie that was set there especially Bedknobs and Broomsticks,Mary Poppins and the Sherlock Holmes movies and Robin Hood
This is how I see you and Luke - you are the keeper of the past and Luke is the keeper of the future.
@@Dexdog interesting observation 🤔!!! I agree 💯
So agree. You where meant to find these Julie. Have you gone back into the Attic just in case there are more.
Julie, I love your abundance of energy and how you've focused it so well on the history of the Montagu family and Mapperton. You have taken your role as mistress of Mapperton on with such zeal... such a pleasure watching you shine in this role.
I’m convinced the so-called sped-up portions of this video are the actual speed at which Julie works. The remainder of the video is slowed down so the rest of us can watch without getting dizzy. 😉
Alberta was down to earth & not snooty. She was kind to her staff.
The fact that the family of a former staff member that worked at Hinchingbrooke Castle still have letters from Alberta is a testament of how well loved the countess was. It would be interesting to see the thoughts and reflections of other former staff members as well as it gives you an ideal of what life was like then and your stepping back in time. I hope there was a record of what was sold at the auction and what you have been able to retrieve back. The records will show of how much was lost.........
My thoughts exactly. I love that Alberta was in contact with her former staff. She must have been a lovely lady.
Ask the nice lady from Northumberland if she has a book of her mother's recipes. If she prepared all the items in the Stillwater, she probably has the original Hitchingbrook recipes. What a treasure trove that would be for you!!!
Can hardly wait to see you add your dissertation to the archives. It will be an outstanding addition to all of the wonderful treasures that are already there.
I look forward to you publishing your dissertation in the future so that we can enjoy reading it. You are doing a marvelous work. Blessings from New York!
A fascinating episode…how amazing to receive the photos and letters about the footman and still maid from Hinchingbrooke to add to your Alberta archive! I absolutely love the portrait of Paulina Peyps!
Paulina is actually perfect in that corner to be honest. It makes her awkward shyness look less awkward. As an introvert myself, I can truly appreciate being in a corner. Just put one of your cats beds near her and she will be happy!!
Wow the Fourth Earl of Sandwhich may of sponsored Captin Cook when he discovered our wee country New Zealand? The Georgian dresses embroidery are exquisite. No wonder they wore day dress, keeping those others for special occasions. Awsume Julie.
That scary portrait reminds me you should hold Haunted Weekends during Oct. 🎃👻
How wonderful to have a way to honor those that worked at Mapperton!
Wow! A picture of Maui @13:44 and Hawaii Islands where I live! Good job. 😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤
Love your organizational skills-you are a lot like me! The placement of the paintings organized by family members will actually make it easier for tour guides I’m sure.
I used babble to learn French! Surprised my husband when we went home, France, to see our kids took him 2 hours to realize I had been speaking French ! I also babble to brush up on my classroom German and Spanish.
Dream collab Julie and Bernadette working recreating some of these beautiful clothes for display so the originals can be preserved while the public can still see their magnificent effect 🙂
Hi Julie, Alberta is the gift that keeps on giving, finding Lilly and her husband as part of what made Hinchingbrooke work. To see they found through the photograph's happy times through war, and how Alberta was as a person. I find myself crying a lot as we go through Alberta's journey with you, but not of sadness, but of how we all couldn't know this woman. Julie, I can't wait to read your dissertation. Thanks so much for sharing her with all of us. Tanto amore da N.Y.
Julie is a breath of fresh air. She's super interested in the history of their home.
Boy what a legacy in this family beautiful portraits and they so happy to be in the rooms you chose well done Julie and your Mother n law. ❤❤❤❤
That was cute! She got a happier vibe when you put her by the window.
How wonderful to spend 32 minutes with Julie showing us how she spends her time looking after treasures. Thank you so much. Good luck with your dissertation. Possibly a book to be enjoyed by your many friends around the world in a not too distant future.
July: opens the door
the door: not today *swings away middle doorknob up*
it's all so nice and exciting: putting up the paintings, the dresses being checked, the dissertation...yeeey!!! even the intermediate italian. go Julie!!
Where do you get all your endless energy ? You accomplish the work of at least 10 people on a daily basis!
Lots of yoga!!!
Julie you are a treasure to your family. Your dedication to preserving family heirlooms is amazing.
I love the 8th Earles clothing that sword was magnificent
Amazing paintings! Why did you say the portrait of the lady was haunted? Was never explained.
Yes ! hauntings are always fun however fanciful. Why is it "haunted"?
That's so fascinating! Would your father in law remember any of the workers?
He does indeed!
Just before watching this I was looking at a video and website of the Royal School of Needlework. I use to do a lot of counted cross stitch.
Love everything you're doing. I can see the scandal sheets now "Vicious Viscountess states Paulina was a heavy and difficult woman!" 🤣 Just kidding, that hallway looks spot-on.
Julie, love your videos. You are such a positive and funny addition to the Montagu Family and Mapperton Estate. We are as giddy as you are when you open a box or another room. What an exciting channel. One thing, you should be wearing white plain Cotten cloth gloves when handling all the things you handle. Oils and sweat on your hands can/does transfer to the fragile paper or cloth. Keep the videos coming - we love it.
They have changed their opinion on handling fabric and paper with gloves and bare hands. Well washed clean hands are now preferred. She did mention that in the video.
Hi Julie, there is so much content in this video, I’m watching you rearranging paintings now in this video, I am going to have to go back and start this over, watch a segment, stop it, and just take it in and also do some extra research as you have piqued my interest in all things Mapperton. The Georgian dresses, as an example, are stunning. Paulina Pieps looks perfect in her new location! Love your painting by Paul Maze, I’m learning so much with you! The idea to take a picture and place it on the outside of the storage box is one I am going to borrow, it is so useful! Now off to your AV channel! Love all the videos you are putting out, so exciting!!
Thank you sooooo much!!!!
Julie - please consider handlingmore and more of your archives with gloves. All good musems do and your collection is certainly museum quality.
This is no longer standard archival practice. Clean washed ungloved hands can handle materials more delicately without doing unintentional damage.
I cannot get over how much Julie manages to tackle in her daily life! And Luke too, of course, with the land projects and such. I cannot even keep my small three bedroom home organized! Amazing estate and history there at Mapperton, and I surely hope to visit one day. God bless you all. ❤
Honestly so cool to see everyone's faces listening to Alberta SPEAKING her own story... in the other video- FASCINATING 💎 PRICELESS .. timeless and soulful - An INTERNATIONAL TREASURE is JULIE MONTAGU
The vivacious relentless curiouser & curiouser Viscountess of Mapperton ❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉 🏆 🏆 🏆
Your TIRELESS efforts are truly inspiring and appreciated XO
I love these videos on Mapperton. I started off watching your renovation of your little house in Tuscany. What a busy life you lead absolutely fascinating, thank you for giving us such an insight into your life!
Thank you for the detailed footage of the Jacobean apron, I can't wait until the conservationist from Bath can come and see all the Georgian gowns. The story of the fourth earl's wife and children broke my heart. Thanks again for sharing all this wonderful history with us, it is so fascinating.
What beautiful treasures!!! Wow. It must be so thrilling to have them back. Congratulations!
Julie, I absolutely love your passion for the history of your family. I’m addicted to your videos. I can spend all day watching.
I love hearing the history of your family! It’s so fascinating! My mother’s maternal side was from England, and we have researched far back, but now I want to research more and see if I can trace back to homes in England!
Your hard work in piecing the family back together and videoing this journey to share and tours is a wonderful thing for your children and their heritage not to be lost but expanded and continued like it should!! I’m from the U.S. and (my cousin was married to an Hawaii who came to the U.S. through serving in the Vietnam war) curious about the Hawaii Island that were once Sandwich islands…when did they become Hawaii? I hear the islands had a king and queen and were not included in the U.S. but stood alone. So they were not own by Sandwich he just saw them on his journey?? Also how do the Sandwich’s play a role in the UK as royals? I guess if you’ve said I’ve missed that part…Thanks for sharing I’ve enjoyed it!! 💕🇺🇸🙏👍😊🐾
Forgot to add - if you create an Amazon wish list for the items you need in repairing/restoring/cleaning/book-binding, etc people can purchase them for you 💜
Today I glad I’m not you! Being responsible for the preserving of the dresses would worry me and keep me awake. Because so many things can go wrong-bugs, fading rotting, getting too hot! Bless you! I missed the mention if the embroidery workshop! I would have love to have done it. Today episode was so informative.
I’m really happy that you and Luke like each other, enjoy working together to restore and preserve the marvelous family history. So much fun.
Julie, you have really done yourself well in all the knowledge of the family and it’s history that you have acquired through all of your diligent research. Your dissertation and book will make wonderful reading! Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🌷🐻
To live every day with so much history... I wouldn't know what to do!!! Hello from PA ❤❤❤😊😊😊
I cannot wait until your book comes out it's going to be wonderful
I love how you were addressed as, "Her Ladyship" in that article Julie. You and Luke are so humble, that it's easy to forget who you are. Thank you for sharing everything of yourselves and the history of your family with us. Do the Italians in the little village know that they have a Viscoutess in their community? You are truly awesome 😊
Julie, I could never do this job! I think it would completely overwhelm me. So I'm happy to watch you do it 😊 Keep'em coming!❤
What a superb video about the Alberta and such great letters and photos from previous staff members who remember them . Your videos and work on the exhibition is so lovely to bring previous owners to life .
Personally you are a superb roll model for an American marring into the royal family , only wish another person took after you . The family are very lucky have such a member who loves the history of the house and family .
Madam Pepis and her son's portraits need to swap walls. She is way too big for that wall. Apologies for having an opinion.
Thank you for sharing. So wonderful to meet Lily “in person”
Julie, you are so amazing! The Montagu family is so lucky to have you as one of their own. Your tireless work to preserve the memories of this family will survive for generations. I wish I had your energy! Brava!
Would it be possible to turn one the out buildings into an art gallery? That way you wouldn't have to shuffle them about and risk damaging them.
This was a really strong episode today. Thank you for sharing.
Julie your enthusiasm and sparkling energy is inspiring!! Always love your videos!!
This a nice vlog - a bit more history. I especially liked hearing about the staff that worked there. I wish you could do another vlog devoted just to that.
I had to squash my curator mode for the comments. Okay, 2 things to consider doing with any boxes - label them outside on the side, top of it and a piece of the tissue paper should also be used to hold a label too. This way, if the lid disappears you know what you have inside too.
Yes, and there used to be a king and queen in Hawaii. A lot of people don’t know that I read a very interesting book about that.
Thank you for this wonderful video! It is so good to see these beautiful dresses stored in archival boxes. My heart bled in the video where you pulled them all out of this ancient wooden storage box. I love textiles and I would love to one day study some of the treasures at Mapperton ❤
As a stillroom maid, she would have aquired so much useful knowledge! Absolutely great ❤
Time I watched a mapperton videos. I watch your Italian ones too. I want to reach through the screen and fix that one lampshade in that one room because it’s always crooked.😂
I LOVE that painting of Paulina Pepis 🩷 It’s absolutely stunning!
Great find Julie! Really cool letter find, signatures of both the Earl of Sandwich and King George III!
That actually looks like a vintage "Commission Scroll", the wording has not changed much even to this day. All commissioned officer in the British Commonwealth are presented with a similar commission scroll upon being promoted to Second Lieutenant.
Has anyone noticed Julie's getting an accent 😂 😮 ❤
interesting how she enunciates certain words
She sounds like she’s from Chicago way to my untrained English mind .
@7ofthem WHAAAAAT!? Lol... NO I meant shes getting an English accent! 😆
I love seeing behind the scenes, though Paulina is a bit scary ❤
Julie, I've been watching for a few years now, It's rare to see you without your fingerless gloves, the weather must be warm 😊
The clothing items are crazy beautiful! Absolutely stunning! So many treasures that you have uncovered at Mapperton. Every chest, box, storage area, we wait with bated breath to see what new treasures are about to be rediscovered. ❤️
I like how you talk to us, you’re doing a lovely job!
I love all your channels ❤❤❤
I enjoyed this episode very much. I’m so happy you were successful winning the lot for your family archives!
Love you! I also wish my mother and sister were still alive ! They’d had enjoyed too! Thanks!
I would be beside myself looking at those beautiful dresses ❤❤❤❤
Great idea to create labels from the pictures of these beautiful historic clothes. ❤❤❤❤❤
Wonderful. I enjoyed every moment of this. The portraits look like they are just where they are meant to be. Julie - you and Luke should commission a portrait, for posterity. Photos are great but a portrait would be a heritage for your generations to come.
Wow! Great that you have the preservation of those beautiful clothes. Love this
I’m an American! I’ve been looking into the Royal School of Needlework for a future summer program. Now I’m really interested after the information you shared .
Great buy at the auction ❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing artifacts. But I think the painting is too large for that wall and looks jammed in there. Perhaps a rearrangement within that room.
Wow - Julie - what a find - ( So cool) your home is amazing ! - I hope to visit some day!
Beautiful bed in the west room
This is so enlightening if you love history and haunting and all these fantastic real stories....I love it on all levels...
Amazing paperwork😊! Julie thanks.😊!
I was terrified by the elusive ghost. I may have nightmares.
What an amazing video! Precious! Loved it! Julie, how brilliant to have photos on the boxes so you know exactly what's in them! Splendid! Thank you for sharing this!!!!!🎉❤
I wouldn't put the labels on the lids of the box, they can be switched out. I would suggest putting it on the body of the box. Less likely that the items will be removed from the box.
What a very fun and interesting episode Btw just joined babble what fun it will be as I adore learning new languages and freshening up my skills thanks you blessings ❤️
So wonderful to
See the paintings😊
Photos from hinchinbrook are amazing
such treasures - thanks for sharing 👍
Where and what products did you buy for preservation; for example, the photo sleeves and the textile boxes?
Preservation Equipment Ltd.
@@MappertonLive thank you!
Great video Julie.
My house needs a munement room.
I'm an amateur genealogist
Congratulations on the article in the magazine!
Awesome! More recent history to learn about. Great job keep us informed! Thanks for sharing
I watched twice and learned a lot. Amazing historical work Julie!
So interesting thank you for sharing
Julie, the more I see your old ancestor, the more convinced I am that she has been restored. Her face is all wrong and her ruff really seems to have been retouched. I hope I am wrong, and that you can get someone to check her out, and find I am wrong. Love the videos.😊
This is brilliant! I would love a job of archivists!
I just love your videos! Thank you for all your time putting them together.
You are so welcome!
Julie is that gold torchen lace on that embroidered gown?
