- This time on American Viscountess, Julie visits the magnificent Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. It’s everything you want a medieval castle to be - a fortress, with the keep, the oldest surviving part of the castle, at its heart. Berkeley Castle has been home to the same family for nearly 900 years - and within its walls, a King of England was imprisoned and murdered in 1327. Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, will will be delving into the archives, meeting the Berkeley family and exploring the restoration and redevelopment projects out on the Berkeley estate.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

Give me a table, a comfortable chair and leave me alone in the archives and I'll see you next Spring. The history! ❤
Exactly!📚📖❤
Who cares about these ingrate snobs…..rediculous generational wealth
Ok
Ohh what a lovely thought 🥃🤝
Agree 👍
Just imagine having those letters in your HOME!!! Where you lived and played as a child!!! I would have taken a desk and sat there for days reading all of those old correspondence from back then!!! Imagine reading a letter from Queen Elizabeth the First OMG I would be in my glory!!!!
Would most of us have appreciated such things as children though? 🤔
You have an American here who would love to bring all her cats and move to the UK country side. My grandfather actually immigrated from Scotland. We heard so many wonderful stories. I'm 79, but perhaps a visit still is worth dreaming. For now I shall enjoy through you. God Bless. 🌹🇺🇸
Thank you lovely American lady for embracing and appreciating our history and values. We welcome you with open arms. Thank you 🙏
This castle’s not too far away from where I live, I’m a born and bred Bristolian. I’ve visited it and it’s simply incredible. Our country’s history is so rich and we should be proud of it! Love when Americans are interested in our history.
All of my ancestors (for at least 600 yrs) came from England and Scotland and Ulster.
The Castle remains "alive". How very wonderful.
good museum
900 years of documented history blows my mind. Amazing. So envious of Charles's upbringing! Imagine growing up in a 900 year old castle. Just... wow
900 years of documented family history is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed this video.
I just had to leave a comment (I normally don’t)….
I could actually FEEL the emotions as he described what it was like growing up with his brother in the castle..”jumping out when visitors were going through “ and “his mother ringing the bell for lunch “ and 2 young children running after playing “soldiers” on the roof….
Magical! Absolutely magical!!
I’m still smiling thinking about these little boys having a blast playing ❤️.
Just didn’t expect to connect on such an emotional level when watching.
Thank you for making my day a little brighter. I’m so grateful I watched as having my coffee as I’ll think of them throughout my day and my heart will be happy 💕
What an absolutely lovely comment ❤
I’m really enjoying this! The Viscountess is so charming and affable. As someone who has studied the monarchy for many years, when I think of Berkeley Castle, I think mainly of Edward II. But this place has so much more history than the death of a king, and the urban legend that surrounds it. There’s also more Tudor history than I expected. I’d love to see more like this!
She just needs to stop bringing up her husband’s family as it were her bloodline. The videos are amazing and very informative, but I wish she would just listen, educate and bring the history to us as she is doing. Please just stop saying “my family”
I can promise the mom who has lived in the castle for 50 years was appalled at the videographer who focused on her shoes and not her upper body.
Shame on the producers who had a camera at the woman’s feet! Once again the host is talking about the house she lives in, give it a rest and just let people speak.
But IT IS Her family, of course is not bloodline because she married into it.@@CodyEllison-w6x
A fairy tale story in the sorts, wow incredible history. Thank you Viscountess Julie for taking us on this wonderful tour and getting to meet the lovely Mrs Berkeley.
Love the history of this beautiful castle! Thank you so much for sharing. King Edward II is my 23rd great-grandfather.
Hi cousin!! (He's my 25th great-uncle)
same on my mother’s side of the family and from Edward long shanks to John of gaunt
@@andrewattenboroughtwothumb4697Also a descendant of John of Gaunt here. 👋
WOW all these relatives you should organise an ancient family connections get together and have it filmed it would be of huge interest.....just a thought
As an American, history love both US and UK, it is so refreshing to see how much you love and care for your adopted country. I love the enthusiasm you have - the American in you shines through - you can take the girl out of the US but you can’t take the US out of the girl. 😅This was a fantastic episode. Such a treasure. Happy holidays from Alexandria, VA.
this video makes me want to visit as well all the way from Ohio, USA...
@@tamtam777Same! I’m from Ohio too! Stay safe and warm-crazy weather!
@@christinebiada1292 the land of the Buckeyes lol...u stay safe n warm as well...yes, crazy weather! 💙🥶💙
Breathtaking....as an ex Archival librarian the part with the manuscripts blew me away, and the general history of the castle is amazing, being an Aussie, in a young country (as in we don't and never have had royalty) I just love your video's and the things you show us. How I would love to be able to see the hidden parts of these beautiful places.
This is a very interesting and thorough look at the castle. Thanks for sharing this with those of us who may never have the opportunity to visit in person. ❤
Incredible timbers wow beautiful what quality!😮❤ love love the tapestries...I would have my house surrounded by them they help keep the warmth in your house too while looking stunning. What a place to grow up!️
Wow that was just lovely. What a nice family. That was a beautiful castle and grounds. Thank you for sharing.
I love your work, Julie ~ I'm enjoying every video you and your team put up. You are an exceptional moderator of these visits - your questions and insights are spot-on. Thank you for all of your efforts!
Julie I just love the history of these houses! Thank you so much for these wonderful tours and letting us meet so many interesting people.
Wow the coat of arms stained glass are amazing
Everything about this episode was extremely interesting! The owner, his mother and wife were all so cool. What a magnificent old white elephant. I believe they just might make things work out for the future. Good show!
This has been the best video so far. What a castle. Extraordinary. Thank you Julie and Charles. Everyone is so enthusiastic. It is wonderful to see. I wish everyone at the castle the very best.
Your best video so far! I feel like I’m there with you. Merry Christmas from Winston Salem North Carolina!
Hi neighbor! From north Wilkesboro!
These Films are Fabulous. Really enjoying the history of these beautiful historic places. As an American, I love learning about the old country. Just love it👍 Keep up the good work!!
and yet ANOTHER outstanding episode of American Viscountess !
As an American our country is so young, I can only imagine what artifacts can be found in Europe that had yet to be discovered. I love history.
And to think one day so will we be history 😢
If you are an American of European descent this is your history too.
@@wolverineeagle oh my I never thought of it like that. My 23 and me dna test shows I’m mostly German then Scottish. So I guess it’s true, it is mine too. I was stationed in Fulda, Germany in 1984-85(18 months). I loved being there so much.
Southeastern american woman here and I do say, I have always loved english history. Marvelous
This one is what I’ve always imagined.
An absolute treasure!
I can imagine Jethro Tull performing Minstrel in the Gallery in the great hall. Would never happen of course, but I can dream can't I?
***Thank you Julie for your tour of this lovely castle! As always, Greetings from MN, USA!***
The documents should be placed between glass and sealed to preserve. Amazing!
This is incredible! I have to visit this place and soon. My dream was Hever Castle which I did 2 years ago, now this is absolutely on this list. What a fab video. Thank you Julie xxx
I’ve visited Hever, it’s my favourite, such a pretty place.
Years ago, when I first started this kind of videos, I wondered about letting the public in to your home, but now I understand that financially it would ruin the family. I do enjoy seeing and going on Viscountess Julie's travels with her. One of the this that I like about the older estates, is that the people living there are also building things like the cafe/shop and will provide employment for the local populations.
Berkeley’s are part of my family history and I enjoyed this very much..From Livonia, Michigan ❤️👩🌾
Wow, how beautiful is the mother of the family. Shes so pretty and still looks amazing for her age. Such an amazing castle with a fascinating history, id never be out of the archives. I bet theres some incredible stuff in there, i mean if you can just whip out letters from Queen Elizabeth 1st as a little taster absolutely incredible place
I love all the people who live in these castles, manors, and country homes today. They have such a sense of the history of the place, and a sense of their place in it, plus, many tend to be quite eccentric, and it's hilarious in a good feeling kind of way.
The value of the copper on the roof alone is monumental! Well, at least to me, it is.😄
It's wonderful to see so many of these castles and state houses being preserved by their owners/caretakers for future generations.
A wonderful tour of a wonderful place! The video title caught my attention as, having a long time interest in English history, I knew the king was Edward II. So I was so interested to see the room where his story happened. But the castle and the estate is so much more than just that one story. The whole visit was fascinating! I was especially excited to see the muniments room and was thrilled to see the historic documents. If I had access to that room, that is where I would definitely spend most of my time! 🏰
I love the Castle. My ancestors were the Careys and Mary Boleyn and this is first time I have seen inside Berkeley Castle 😊
I CANNOT CONVEY HOW JEALOUS I AM THAT YOU GET TO EXPLORE THIS GORGEOUS CASTLE AND IT’S AMAZING HISTORY. 🥰❤️😍
Fantastic video! Amazing history! Thank you for being so interested in these old castles and all the details you love! Enjoyed it!❤
Lovely tour, thanks to all of you! Question: Why are the clay pots on the posts, and why are they upside down?
Thumbs up thanks for sharing 👍 happy new year.
Part of the reason Charles the second was able to be restored to the monarchy was because of my Pendrill great grandfather Julie. He owned Boscobel, gave the king his clothes and hid with him in the oak tree.
Oh , and the first Baron de Berkeley was my 22nd great grandfather . Would love to look around the castle.
You are a good match for the Viscount - a love match who loves English history and has the skills to showcase it!
So lovely to see you ❤️ presenting this program
Thanks for sharing your interesting life through the wonderful history of Britain. Love, from Philadelphia,Pa.
You're great, and so committed and engaging.
Wonderful tour and information. Fascinating.
OMG, Miss Georgina is beautiful and charming, and absolutely hilarious!!!❤
I love the fact you're driving a left hand drive classic Vette.
Loving these videos that Julie leads!
The gardener was so animated. Appreciate the passion for just putting in what he loves.
This documentary was just wonderful. Thank the makers and Charles Berkeley to show us his historical home.
Thanks Julie! And Merry Christmas to you and your family👼☃️🎁🎅🎄✨️💖
Thanks for the tour Julie. Hello from Queensland Australia.😊
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you for sharing this story with us.
Really enjoyed watching, fantastic film of a very special place will definitely be visiting soon.
Thanks for this. History was my favorite and yes best subject in school.
Its great you can see and feel his pride of his family castle as he should be what a beautiful place it is
This is amazing. Thank you so much for producing these wonderful documentaries.
Amazing and beautiful castle. The same family for 900 years. That is so interesting. Thank you for sharing.
Great video as usual I love Dan he's a good guy and i agree with everything you have spoken about in this video about the gruesome twosome .
Love your dog 🐕 he's georgus can see how happy he is and how much he's loved.
Have a wonderful weekend and i look forward to seeing your next video. ❤
It is a large castle, but somehow it seems warm and cozy! Lovely!
The British are so very protective of their history. Here in America our birth is very recent and there are those eager to rewrite and even destroy the history. That makes me very sad.
The castle is breathtaking. I am a history buff. Thank you for bringing these stories to life❤️
Very much enjoy the long format of these. Thanks :)
I love in the next village and visit it every year, it's a magical place
I enjoyed this so very much! I hope to visit. Thanks Julie, brilliantly done as always! 😃🥰🙅♀️
Wow!! I an SUPER impressed with how much render and linewash is left on the walls of Edward's cell. You can almost imagine how the walls really used to be.
This is an amazing episode, very interesting. Loved it ❤
This show is spectacular the best entertainment I've come across in years 🎉🎉❤
Were we going next 🤔
Privilege to hear the story of this gentleman. Royal Royalty please keep doing the good work.
An ancestral home of mine. Nice to see it and learn of it and its history. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing, I e joyed ❤ all the history of the casel and the beauty of it all.
Absolutely amazing history.
Congratulations with kicking off the retreat season with such a successful week!!🎉
This was a fantastic episode, I love hearing about Berkeley Castle and I remember really hearing about it from when they did an episode of Who do you think you are with actress Courtney Cox as she descends from the Berkeley family also. The current family are descendants of Roger Mortimer which is why I think it's so neat cause the Queen of England shacked up with him and the King, her son had him executed. But to be associated with the She-wolf of France in such a notorious manner, whoa 😬😵
Great episode. I just subscribed. Host loves the word "brilliant".
How amazing that 9 generations have lived in the castle. It's so beautifully maintained
Stunning, from South Africa 🇿🇦
Wonderful visit💙
Enjoy this the most as so much history was told. That what i love most
Beautiful!!! Such a fascinating story❤️
Fantastic. Brilliant! Good and delicious. And the house is nice, too.
I'd love to see and FEEL that place!!
Brilliant usage not so brilliant. But thank you really cool what you’re doing. Signing off from somewhere outside of Chicago ! Keep it up!
Fantastic as always !
I love horses too and what beautiful grounds to ride them 😊❤
His mother is still as beautiful as her portrait, and it looks as if she could still wear that dress today. Beautiful ❤
How does just one full time gardener manage this space? I am overwhelmed by my small garden.
Luke and Julie just started my patronship.
Maybe just me, but i love that she is throwing back with a "Time Team" style sweater
What an exciting place to be! I'd be curious to know if anyone in the family has published anything about the castle, perhaps the gardens throughout its history? Thank you for such a lovely and interesting visit.
how I would love to have a wander around, fascinating
I wonder if they found any wonderful artifacts when they were digging the new site?
I was wondering if the truth would come out about Edward II. Not a good way to go. Total Anglophile here as an American descended from the Howard family. Thanks so much Julie. Really enjoyed the tour. What tho, is the point of the clay pots on top of the stakes?
The cost to upkeep these places is so monumental, they all eventually close.. inevitable which is too bad.
