This was so incredibly interesting! The history of Blenheim Palace, and the intriguing lives of the people that lived there, was absolutely fascinating! Cool is the right word…even cold! Those buildings are freezing especially in winter! And the rooms being so tall could be pleasant in the summer but the summer is not that hot and very short!!
If I became a Viscountess, I would be honored to preserve the history of wherever I would live. Keeping alive the characters of the past so they are not forgotten and preserving buildings is important.

Most Americans adhere to the highest standards of personal hygiene they can AFFORD. The standards for the general population have improved over time. However we used to have some foreign immigrants who stank. I figured out it's because they all had to work their a**es off otherwise famine loomed large. No time to bathe. That's actually a good reason to stink. Maybe the Duke too just worked like a dog. You never know.

Hello from Texas, Its interesting to see the name Consuelo in relation to British atistocracy. Its a name usually associated with Spanish culture meaning consolation. Thank you for featuring her. She was extraordinarily strong and smart.

After living in all the Vanderbilt homes that were up to date and comfortable, she probably felt like she was slumming it at Blenheim until she updated it!
But a lot of rich Americans wanted to marry back into the European aristocracy because it was easier to preserve your wealth in England. America was a land of opportunity for those who were TRYING to get rich, but England's tax codes favored those who already WERE rich. America had no type of safety net to prevent the established rich from LOSING everything.
@@sha.elaine Over the past couple of centuries, America completely devoured all other nations in terms of percentage of global gdp. Europe indirectly benefited from this. They didn't suffer and are no more impoverished than they were before. Only China and India took an economic beating. Africans? 😶. But in the end, Europe's financial stability on the world stage depended on conquering a distant land altogether. The 2 concepts are very closely interrelated.

We know a great deal of their wealth also came from the slave trade as well as compensation after slavery was abolished. Funding later came from the goods it produced. American aristocracy were still cashing in on it, so their wealth ran long.

l toured Blenheim in the early 90s and have always been in awe of it. I've seen palaces all over Europe, but to me, Blenheim is grander than Chatsworth. Just my preference. I like this series. I think the Viscountess would be a hoot to enjoy dinner and a few cocktails with!
I totally enjoyed this video so interesting and the Palace’s architecture interior design is spectacular. I’m surprised gloves weren’t worn when touching old documents etc to keep them protected.
Julie, it’s makes me smile when I hear the English accent creeping into your speech, because I know that would happen to me too. I hope the English know it’s not mocking, it just happens to some of us that are very phonically astute.
Why on earth would you even try to act as if Consuelo cared about being the Duchess of Marlborough or renovating his house, when Consuelo was secretly engaged to another man? Didn't Alva lock Consuelo in her bedroom and force Consuelo to marry a duke so that Alva's divorced status in the community would be rehabilitated? So basically, William Vanderbilt became wealthy by paying his employees insufficient salaries, degraded his wife by leaving her; whereupon Alva divorced him contrary to society norms of the "Gilded Era", and forced an unwanted marriage upon her daughter. Consuelo was sold as if she were enslaved and was forced to have children with a man she did not love. Consuelo's money did not save the Duke's familial mansion, the ill begotten gains from William Vanderbilt did. How sad!!! I think this is the story that deserves to be told.
I hope you put out a documentary on Alberta. I e been excited about that for a while now. Happy new year to you and your family. I enjoy your travels and experiences. I live vicariously through your videos. My health has stopped my dream of travels but I do have two trips I am trying to plan. I will be going to Iceland with my family where I was born. I will also go to the Philippines with my father. It will his last trip there to see his family.
I really liked this story, and Sarah impressed me with her accounting and management skills for that time period. I also found Consuelo very interesting, making the best out of a marriage she never wanted. I thought her giving to the school children was nice, along with donating the extra food, and not wasting it. I didn't care for the sphinx caricatures of Gladys, they were creepy looking. I loved the tapestries, the restoration looked so much better. I think the Mapperton tapestries should be done, you can bring a stork on board anytime, history degrades, and needs saving, plus it would be something new for tourists to look at. The life story of Winston Churchill is a sad one, he never got to show hid dad that he did amount to something. I could see the look in his eye's in the picture with Consuelo, a kind of far off look. WWll really saved his self worth, because in WWl, he had a military plan go badly, which cost many lives, and he was basically kicked off the position he had. He did afterwards go into battle to prove to himself that he could become like his dad in parliament. As soon as the war was over, they hastily pushed him out, to progressive i would guess. I can see why he would be able to coverse with Consuelo, probably more so. I don't care for Gladys, you don't wreck a marriage with adultery, i just find cheating appauling, and she had been a friend of Consuelo. I think of my grandparents, they loved each other to the end. My dad died in 1994, and my mom re married, but she never loved him like she did my dad, guess that's why she died in 2016, and wasn't afraid, but was ready. G-d bless.
The book, The Glitter and the Gold is a good read. I recommend buying a copy if you’re interested in learning about the role of the aristocracy and especially, Consuelo Vanderbilt.
Just a quick info for whoever may question what aristocrat aids would do themselves: they directed and supervised the tasks and had hands on staff to carry them through.

Her Spanish name was in honour of her godmother, Consuelo Yznaga(1853-1909), a half-Cuban, half-American socialite

I thought her giving to the school children was nice, along with donating the extra food, and not wasting it. I didn't care for the sphinx caricatures of Gladys, they were creepy looking. I loved the tapestries, the restoration looked so much better. I think the Mapperton tapestries should be done, you can bring a stork on board anytime, history degrades, and needs saving, plus it would be something new for tourists to look at. The life story of Winston Churchill is a sad one, he never got to show hid dad that he did amount to something. I could see the look in his eye's in the picture with Consuelo, a kind of far off look. WWll really saved his self worth, because in WWl, he had a military plan go badly, which cost many lives, and he was basically kicked off the position he had. He did afterwards go into battle to prove to himself that he could become like his dad in parliament. As soon as the war was over, they hastily pushed him out, to progressive i would guess. I can see why he would be able to coverse with Consuelo, probably more so. I don't care for Gladys, you don't wreck a marriage with adultery, i just find cheating appauling, and she had been a friend of Consuelo. I think of my grandparents, they loved each other to the end. My dad died in 1994, and my mom re married, but she never loved him like she did my dad, guess that's why she died in 2016, and wasn't afraid, but was ready.

What a coincidence, i just today got the book Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt by Amanda Mackenzie Stuart.
I wonder if Consuelo and Alberta ever met and hung out together back in day? Bonding over their transition from the U.S. to British aristocracy.

The book, The Glitter and the Gold is a good read. I recommend buying a copy if you’re interested in learning about the role of the aristocracy and especially, Consuelo Vanderbilt.

Just a quick info for whoever may question what aristocrat aids would do themselves: they directed and supervised the tasks and had hands on staff to carry them through.
