The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

I felt so blown away when I started using my faq 201! I love the blue light, it's so effective for getting rid of pimples 🎉🎉
I love how when one or the other will say” I think this can be restored” ….the other one will just quietly look at the cameraman for help…..
Your mother has an amazing memory for all the different items you looked at. You should catalog your collection while she is still around so no one forgets the history behind it all.
Julie and Luke are doing an amazing job of recording the history of the family, the estate, and the historic things passed down for generations.
Even if they don’t have it all in writing yet, they have video of Luke’s parents, telling the stories. For me, it’s always a treat when the Earl and Countess come to share their history with us! Because of
their giving and sharing nature, these stories are recorded and will not be lost to history!
And, look at Julie’s Herculean efforts to preserve and share the family’s history, the stories and precious things will be preserved for future generations!
The two of them together are beyond hilarious! I could listen to them converse all day! Your life must be magnificent
Can you make an update video, when you have cleaned and restored the furniture? I think that would be great to see😀😀😀❤️
Luke's mother brings so much history, I'd love to hear more, she is so interesting and has such great charisma. 💛
MORE of this type of episode, please! I love watching the search, discovery, learning the history, and seeing the beautiful items!
Loved it!
So love when the Countess is featured in the reels. She’s brilliant in so many areas. Many beautiful pieces.
Luke your mother the Countess is practical, and a delight. It's always wonderful to see her.
Luke, your mother is marvelous! I have missed her. I would listen all day to her history! Enjoyed this video so much.
I see so many beautiful things in the shed !! It's so lovely to see Luke and his mum on camera together again, and I enjoyed hearing bits of her family history !!! "Take it, it's free (and I'll add this bit from my own grandmother, who lived through two world wars; 'And if you get rid of it you will find yourself needing one, and having to go out and buy a brand new one within a week!!').
This was a wonderfully interesting episode in every way. Luke, your Mother is the real treasure! Please visit with her on screen often andstart recording her stories at once. And, please ask Julie to focus her next work on your Mother!
Luke’s mom is a treasure trove of historical facts!
Luke wins the discussion on the bed warmer. They had warm coals placed in them to warm the beds before bedtime. What an interesting experience for the family to rediscover their wealth of furnishings to be rehabilitated and used in the farmhouse. Best of luck in this endeavor.
Such a darling episode! Julie, your excitement over every find is infectious! It is obvious your husband gets such a kick out of it. My bucket list includes a visit from my home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA to Mapperton with my daughters because I simply must meet you all and see it all with my own eyes; videos are no longer enough! Thank you for all the joy you bring and for sharing your lives with us in such detail. Although it certainly began for you as a way to gain exposure for your property, I'm sure it's become a mission of love for you, and for your followers too! Your tireless work never goes unnoticed. ❤
How lovely it will be to see the cottage decorated and furnished with your Grand-Aunts antique 1920's furnishings.
I hope y’all are cataloging all of the finds in the manor. Getting the history of these items recorded from Luke’s parents is so important.
Having your parents around is such a treasure. Enjoy it while you can
Luke was correct. Coals or embers for the Georgian metal bedwarmer, not hot water.
Yes you are correct.
I’m surprised that Julie hasn’t been in that storage before.
I’m sure that once everything is clean, the cottage is going to look great with that furniture.
The jelly molds would make a great display on a kitchen wall. And I would keep the green cupboard!
The green cupboard could be used in a boot room.
I thought the same. When Luke said it was worthless I yelled "I'll take it!"
If it’s free, keep it 😂😂😂😂😂Lovely to see Luke and his mom. How wonderful to have the coronation robes restored 😍😘
I agree with your mother that most of the furniture just needs a good cleaning and possibly a bit of work but not completely restored. I think if a family comes to a holiday rental such as yours expect it to be well lived in.
I LOVE LUKE'S MOTHER! Have her on more frequently!
If it were me, there would be no Lorry at 8am, as I would be hard at cleaning and restoring the treasure Luke and his mother found.
They should set up a booth at the Christmas Fair to sell the items they don't want to keep. I would love to dig through those boxes 🎁 🎄
Agreed
Always a pleasure to listen Lady Sandwich and indeed ı would like to learn a bit about her family it seems interesting really 😊😀
Please take the family photos into the house.
I love how careful Julie was being with the coronet and how luke was trying to bend it back. Reminds me of the Queen with the crown
Luke I love your mother. I had a blast watching you two rescue all those treasures. Your a favorite also Luke.
Lots of restoration projects for Julie--set up a production line for the cleaning and repolishing and you have your cottage almost furnished. Bravo
This aristocratic family obviously tends to completely neglect all things until they are on the verge of decay. Be it buildings, furniture or coronation robes. They needed an american woman to get things in order eventually.
I would like to go through those boxes . Send Julie in she is a force .
Love how Luke said “sorry” to his mom a couple of times. Very sweet. 🥰
I wish I could come to the Estate sale and just purchase a piece of your history!! So many jewels in there!!! People don’t hang on to them anymore they want all new with no history or story to pass down to their children! Great to see and hear your family history in those pieces…enjoyed it so much!👍💕🙏🇺🇸😊🐾
This was a very interesting episode. Thanks Luke and Countess!
Loved this episode! Thanks for making it. Julie's creative mind will make much of these treasures.
Cancel pickup until Julie gets there!!
Julie where are you??? Treasure Trove Alert!!! Antique Furniture Galore!!!
I want more of Luke and his mother! I love her talking about her family history and teaching him.
Luke’s mother is full of valuable information
Had a wonderful day at mapperton last week.the house and gardens are wonderful! But the icing on the cake was zctually meeting julie!😊 she is just as nice in person as she comes across on her videos. Tha k you julie for making my day.xxgretaxx
I like the green cupboard.
"No, it's pretty hideous Luke, I wouldn't touch it..." LOL I love his mom!!!
However you could change the colour of the cupboard so easily.
@@lynnralph8373 I think it's the shape..lol
You guys are so cute, I love your Mom. So nice you two live so close to each other. Big hugs Sandie from Texas
Well done finding expert assistance in restoring the robes.
So many treasures!! It shrivels my brain that tarps or at the very least sheets weren't put over them to keep the dirt and poop off them. All furniture should be saved, you never know what structure might be transformed next into livable areas to rent.😊
Oh my Luke ... I would of let Julie go through all those wonderful treasures before they leave the premises!
Keep Everything!! You can't decide in a short afternoon, with a huge hoard like that stuff in the shed. Oh, well, what's done is done.
What a treasure trove of antique furniture! Every piece has so much potential. Happy Hunting
Wow imagine having your own antique shop right in your back yard! This was very neat to watch.
If they’d taken Julie in that barn they would’ve just cancelled the furniture pickup.
🤣🤣🤣
Maybe they knew better!
LOL that's why they waited until she was off to Hampton Court.
I bet she was already horrified at the careless storage and wouldn’t go
Me too!
Strip that green cupboard. It's perfect for a little pantry cupboard. The bed warmer is for coals. It has holes in the lid so it is not for water. Julie needs to have a look before the pickup. And Iisten to your Mum! She's got so much history on her side that is so interesting. Love seeing the two of you together. Keep it cause its free! Exactly what I was thinking.
That green cupboard would be a KEEP from me!
I am watching from Poland. I am so impressed with your mother's knowledge. I would love to hear some stories about how your mother and father met and how she found the early years of living in Mapperton.
I’m so invested in watching all the episodes now. I would love to visit one day.
What fun going through all these finds. Luke and mom were great, hope for more.
Gosh, I'd love to have an old warehouse were I can keep furniture like this. It'd be like going shopping. Having so much to choose from.
Mom and son are adorable together!
That was wonderful! Thank you both, I so enjoyed hearing the Countess telling of the history of various pieces!
I love it when Mom comes to supervise!
Knowing how I am, if I lived there I would have snooped in every room, every cabinet, and every chest in no time! That’s how I was at my grandmother’s house. In the front bedroom there was an old trunk full of old stuff, including an ancestors false teeth. We used to just laugh and laugh every time we came across those. We would play those old records on the Victrola; after turning the handle many times!
What a treasure trove from Great Auntie! Even though repairs and restoration will be rather a lot of work (and potential cost?), the results will be well worth it all. If the lower floor bedroom is to have more modern furniture/bunk beds, that green wardrobe should work well, even if it needs a coat of paint. The Countess is correct: it’s free!
I think that was just a fabulous and insightful vedio!
I'd ring up the people that were to come in the morning and tell them to save their petrol.
No need to come and get some volunteers with dust rags and some wood cleaner.
It's lovely to hear about your mother's side of the family, Luke!!
I would love to hear more about the Countess' family.
Looking foward to seeing the cleaned and restored furniture in their new quarters. Your mother is delightful, and her stories are so interesting. I hope that she shares more soon.
Well that was really fun. I love all the old beautiful pieces.
Hello Countess Mom!!! So lovely & adore your story telling!!!❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤
I have been blessed to have antique furniture that has been given to me, I live to " restore back to life" these treasures. Dr. Bob;-)
Wonderful that you have beautiful furniture to reclaim! Things just aren’t made of that quality anymore. What a treasure load!! Your mom’s recollections are amazing! Love from Pennsylvania, USA 💕🐻🌷
Loved seeing Julie, the coronation robes and especially Luke and his mother!!
I really like hearing more about Luke's maternal family history. It sounds like she has an interesting back story.
Found this so very interesting and loved it all. Love Luke's mom, especially when she said " Take it, if it is free" lol The Countess is herself and never puts on any heirs, and this I love too! She as Countess and the Earl ,have so much wit, and humor to add , and they know so much history.. and this could never be told again. just the way they can! We find they know so very much! It is very interesting to hear them share it all. Luke and Julie are always so busy, and especially Julie, do not know how she does it!
Many interesting items were there and it is nice to take part in the historical life.
You will never beleive this one, but that "Cane Stand" was something I have been looking for and wanting. That was so odd when I saw it! Funny how you have something deep in your mind and yet it never comes to fruitation and then all at once you do see it and then you know it is just way out of reach! I have two canes and know that is not alot, but somedays I walk well and some not, and hurt terribly and again need hip surgery , and that is why . I am wishing my husband could make one, but it is not happeing. Like Umbrella stands, they all can come in handly often! Keeps things orgainized! We never know what we may just find looking around at antiques! Or if we have a large attic or room with items from the past in them, Really had a great time joining your video, but I always do, Thank you!
Das ist ja wie an Weihnachten ! So viele Überraschungen!❤
Mineral spirits after vacuuming the furniture..and a good waxing❤️❤️❤️
Luke if your mother doesn’t keep diaries, you should have an archivist ask her questions and get it all down on recording!
I could never let one of those items go ! ❤
I love listening to Luke's mom. 😊
Excellent presentation! Love your beautiful work!
Beautiful furniture! Save and restore it all. I’m sure the majority can be placed into the new rental restoration project. This could be a fun project for Julie and the kids. Sanding, staining or painting the vintage furniture finds.
Yes, less costly than buying new and so lovely.
So many treasures to happily decorating one of your small cottages
Their talent is awesome. There is no way I could do such a thing.
I love listening to your mother and her historical knowledge.
Heartbreaking to see the furniture being sold, there is many a hobby restorer that would love the chance of bringing these pieces back to life for you. Xx
I love exploring in barns! Finding lots of treasures!
I can't believe the furniture in that barn! I'm drooling
Beautiful furniture that will look stunning in the restored house. I hope to one day visit and stay there.
Loved this episode and your mother!!! It would of cost a fortune to buy antiques like these! Cant wait to see them in their new home!❤
Through the two rooms I count 3 Drop front desks…chests with a writing surface on top. ME: I would not entrust those beautiful chests to holiday letters. .. I’d use the drop fronts.
It may seem like you are keeping a lot of the items but the way you both are going at it fast pace and quickly moving on to the next item is a very good way to get these choices made. Good work both of you. Praying your success. From Bakersfield California USA where it is 106* F daily. Las Vegas hit 120*F . A record. God bless you all 💪 🙏 💓 🐢 🐝
Very nice 👍 sharing sister god bless you all family members
There was a little stool that had a red tag that would’ve been excellent in the cottage your redoing!
Oh MY goshhhh all that amazing stuff! Us Americans pray to find just a little haul of any of that❤
Your family makes me intrigued with all the history, today fun was finding out me and Luke share a birthday. Someday I’d love to visit mapperton and other stately homes in England and Scotland.
I love watching Luke and Julie thank you for another brilliant episode x
Luke (and Nestor) resembles Dad but obviously get his "Blonde" from his mother!
❤such a wonderful episode❤
Would love to hear about her family history!!!
There are youtube furniture restorers in the UK Flipping Drawers in Bristol and Mayfield Restoration you might try collaborating with them to fix up the furniture in the shed. I watch their channels all the time and they do beautiful work! I would love to see the furniture being cleaned and restored. I would also like to see what is in those boxes. Your mom is right it is silly to get rid of this stuff when you have a house to redo.
The do amazing work. So beautiful.
Geez, I think I would have kept everything. It is all so amazing.
That picnic basket, and that other wicker piece,I would never leave those buildings until every single item was opened and unwrapped,no no,it all must stay😮
Julie and Luke nice video regarding. Restored the Coronation Robes and beautiful Hampton Court Palace.
NO! That furniture is fabulous. What treasures! Kind of a shame it's going but I can feel her 'overwhelming-ness' of it all.
I can't believe Julie hasn't been through all this, (or did I miss that?).
I suppose there are loads of us watching here that can't imagine getting rid of anything in the barn! My heart was starting to beat faster and faster at the things to be sent away! NOOOOOO!
