I love Julie and Luke’s banter! You are so funny and so lovely. You obviously have a fabulous relationship and the way you bounce off each other is delightful. But omg I can understand you feeling so overwhelmed, by both the quantity of projects and the costs involved; frightening!
My great great grandfather,Malachi, great grandfather Thomas and my grandfather Edward ( a young child) are on the North Poorton census 1911. They were farmers at Manor farm. My grandad also lived as tenant farmers at Loscombe farm. All part of that Mapperton estate. Daubney family.
Luke's Mother has so much family history to impart. How wonderful to have her doing so on video. Hang on to all the furniture. Luke has all those great rebuilding plans for places for people to stay.
Could be an 18th century style farmhouse with a fireplace to heat and cook. Luke and Julie work so well together, he is her rock and keeps her from overdoing things. Always look forward to watching them.
At only 1 minute + I have to stop watching and express how lovely, truly breathtaking the views are. The unspoiled beauty of the green field almost seems to touch the clouds floating past. What a tremendous privilege it is that you both have allowed us glimpses of dramatic landscapes and invited us so kindly into Your life journeys. *now I can resume the video
Raymond is such a fount of knowledge! Whether it’s historic construction techniques, local history, or Mapperton lore, he is the master. You have a fan in Virginia, y’all, in an area that looks much like Dorset and it’s known for its historic farms and horse sports. Many farm owners around here have also inherited large 18th and 19th estates without the means to restore or renovate the property. PS I hope you take the historic photographs and either reframe them properly, or store them flat in the archive. It’s easy to misplace those important portraits.
The sick and twisted thing about stone buildings is that they'll last just about till the end of forever if made of quality stones, it's just that EVERYTHING ELSE fails around them given enough time unless they're dry set, roof included. Props to the ancients for figuring that out, to bad we didn't learn! 😅😅
Instead of one huge house with many bedrooms, I suggest two (or three) efficiencies which can be joined togeter 9by opening doors) if needed. It is much easier to rent small spaces than big ones. Also,, it looks like you have nice riding trails. What about leaving simple stables for guests who want to bring their horses while on holiday?
I'm from Chicago. I now live in Ireland. My brother lives in Big Rock. You folks seem to tie everything together! Been through Surgar Grave many a time! God bless you folks!
Luke & Julie complement each other. Julie is kinda like the “Spazz”, and Luke is the cool, laid back, chill, voice of reason, and that dry British humor. Julie reminds me of one of those old paddle ball toys where the ball is attached by a rubber band and you bounce the ball with the objective being to hit the ball with the paddle as many times as you can without missing. Julie is the rubber ball, Luke is the rubber band that tethers her, but also is a steadying influence by being practical & pragmatic. They totally balance each other out. They’re a real hoot to watch. These 2 are perfect for each other. ❤️
I don’t blame Luke for feeling overwhelmed. So many projects and money needed to save these historic buildings. Lovely to go shopping with Luke’s mother along with hearing about family members and their history 😍😘
Hello, from Havre De Grace, Maryland in the U.S.! You two are so admirable and wholesome. It's nice to see a couple enjoying the beauty of the simple things in life.
Idea, Make a small cutout of Raymond to sell on your website People can then take him all over and photograph and post online. That way he can visit all over the world. It would also generate some income for Mapperton.
Hello to everyone at Mapperton. Like Julie I am an American and many of us don't have an accurate understanding of the relationships between Mapperton and these towns and villages you tell us about. Are they on the estate grounds? Do they pay some kind of rent to Mapperton to function within the estate? Are they adjacent to your property? Same question about the farms. Are they within your land and owned by you or are they their own legal entities which pay a fee to be on your land. How about the roads that cut through your land? Who owns and maintains them? Water rights? Electricity grid? I would love to see a video which explains all of this and shows the full breadth of the estate and how the legal homesteading all works. This is probably all common knowledge in the UK, but it's not common for us in America. Thanks for your attention.
What a great Mother you have Luke. From your nonage to your dottage you will be lucky to have such another perfect ashlar. You do have good luck and i love seeing your efforts succeed. Thanks for sharing.
Luke is so handsome and so sweet to Julie. Julie has a great personality and she resembles Lauren Bacall in the movie Designing Woman costaring Gregory Peck.
Julie, I very much admire you (and Luke, too!) and would love if you would include shopping links to your hat and wardrobe! Very fascinating view of the behind -the-scenes at Mapperton! Thanks for taking us along! 😄
Raymond is a true gem! So knowledgeable! Julie the roofer…another one of your talents! Luke the roofer, too!! You land is so beautiful, and so much of it!! Lush and green! That barn would make a very nice get away cottage! Visitor center sounds great! Luke and his guessing games….milk in pipes…ahhh dairy farm! Luke and Julie’s retirement home in your dotage!! 🤣🤣. More fund raising in store! Love from Pennsylvania, USA💕🌷🐻
Its quite huge projects u got there but looking forward on the restoration of such historical place. I believe it will be really something your kids will appreciate and value aside from the people that are very interested to see the preservation of such enormous beautiful place! Go Julie and Luke! You can do it!!!!
Hello, I watch you and Julie regularly and a thought came to mind when you said, "...several cottages in a row." What about recreating a village like Williamsburg in the states. There would be volunteers dressed in period costume showing different ancient trades. Full-time employees running the village, civic leaders in character and the Lord, also dressed in character could show up on certain dates or at special ceremonies. Sounds like fun!
I just really enjoy watching your Mapperton videos. You both are so relatable and seem to have such fun. Also, you handle all of the problems that a manor has very well.
Oh wow lots of expensive roofing jobs needed the government should have grants for listed buildings for sure ! Afraid i am just like Julie hard to part with childrens things but i too must declutter or it takes over your house - would love an afternoon hunting thro all that furniture! I bet Raymond is worth his weight in gold thanks for sharing ❤
I just discovered your channel and love watching how both of you lovingly restore every bit of your estate one precious room at a time! BTW I LOVE the black floor decision-looks great. Being an Anglophile from Normal Illinois I also chose black (tile) floors for my living room and heritage red wall color. Did this 20 years ago and still love it.
California fan of Raymond here. He is welcome to come visit us one day son. My mom used to have a 19641/2 Ford Mustang Convertible. It was deep metallic blue with a white top and shiny blue upholstery to match the car’s body. It was a magnificent machine.
Here's a possible idea: Sort through EVERYTHING STORED EVERYWHERE, and plan to sell everything that's decent but you know you'll not use. Hold a giant "boot sale", inviting others to purchase a space to sell their own goods. You might earn a nice amount that could be put towards one of the projects.
I love watching a Midwestern gal turned Vicountess, her husband and family from my little corner of the world. And Luke, from an old farm gal here, it looks like your out buildings need some work, and I appreciate the tour through them. I also love that you have an online store, but I'm in my dotage and really don't need more stuff. However, it looks like you have lots of roofs that need attending to, and I'd love to help with that here and there. You have tile roofs, slate roofs, thatch roofs, sheet metal roofs, and if you broke down (or pretended to, I wouldn't care) those expenses into manageable pieces, as a midwesterner I'd be inclined to help in our tradition of neighbors helping neighbors. For example, if an antique clay tile costs 25 pounds, I might be able to afford that once in a while, or a slate tile costing 75 pounds, a square foot of thatch costing 150 pounds (and then, if you're harvesting the reeds for the thatch from the estate, give us a video on that, or a tour of where they make the clay tiles or quarry the slate tiles, for example). Now, I know that there are foundational issues like making sure walls are in good repair and beams will withstand another 100 years of holding up extremely heavy loads, and I wouldn't be looking at the books to make sure every farthing went only to tiles, and I would watch a video or two of harvesting wood and turning it into the structural pieces needed (because I'm that kind of nerd as well), if that's something you're doing, this might be a way to help raise the rebuilding and maintenance funds for some of your beautiful buildings. Julie did "buy me a coffee," and it was quite successful. "Buy me a roof tile" has potential as well, and it would contribute to the funding issues as well as open to door to new videos showing us how that all gets done (much like some of the snippets of restoring the eagles, but I would have loved to see more than snippets, because it is a rare skill set to actually do). Construction and restoration videos, especially of interesting buildings, are popular (look up Cole the Cornstar or Dyfferent for examples), and I think you could do well in that space. Just a thought, respectfully submitted for your consideration. Keep up the good work and take us along for the ride!
That barn with the new hole has nice high ceilings... I imagined a guest house with pub decor... Like rent a pub-cottage... Business trip stays... Meeting room available...brilliant.
Love the idea of converting that old barn into a tiny house off grid early modern Britain style, in America there are dedicated parks to house tiny house communities while in Australia its far more common to find them individually on rented or bought land out in the sticks.
Loved the photographic frame of you both at about 21:09, Julie looking like a spring chicken for certain, and Luke arranging for their dotage in a retirement home with fabulous views drinking Earl Grey in their special chairs. Hard to visualize in it's present rubble strewn overgrown disorder, but no doubt absolutely beautiful once the funds become available. Was this also from an earlier episode? - it all seemed familiar.
Oh, that's a great idea to fix up that barn. It was giving me Paul and Linda McCartney vibes when they stayed in their Scottish abode. Needs some sheep.
I lived in Tanzania for 16 years running a lodge and retreat center - would’ve loved a visit from Raymond!!’ There was plenty to do and he would’ve been loads of fun to work with!
Great idea for the Greenway barn! You could add things like passive outdoor exercise equipment up and down the valley/dale/draw/arroyo. Bayshore Drive in Tampa, Florida has something called Bayshore Fitness Trail with exercie equipment you could build yourself. You should keep a nice desk with paper and pens for guests in the barn. They may become inspired to write a masterpiece. Just food for thought.
One thing I have learned is that having too much stuff is an issue no matter how small or large your home is. I can say though, that I'll never find a three hundred year old chair just hanging around in one of my out buildings.
At one time, they used hot coals in bed warmers. We have an 18th century house in our city (which we toured in school) and they had the bed warmer that was filled with coals.
Hey, has anyone seen Apple’s TV show- Time Bandits? Episode 5, is about The Earl of Sandwich. I laughed so hard. Luke! Are you out there? Did you guys know about this?
How sad it is to see so many of these old buildings giving way from lack of maintenance over many, many, many years. Obviously some are well beyond repair, so sad.
For some of those projects that you're probably never going to be able to afford (just because of the number of things needing doing), would it be possible to do a lease to an individual(s) or companies where they would renovate the premises and "lease" them (with credit for their expenses) for a set period of time (i.e. 25-50 years)?
Perhaps you could have an episode about funding. Are there any national sources of funding for heritage properties? I understand that there are likely many grades of properties and that may vary any funds. And these out buildings may not be eligible for much or maybe anything in that regard. But I would be interested.
Are these collages of tasks to do in fututre being put on Live posts to gather $$ to help with them? Not sure how YT works that way for live fundraisers. Suggestion, fun raisers should say so in title so we can help. LOVE seeing the future plans for the barns etc… the views are AMAZING!
All of the furniture is beautiful I would never get rid of it they don't make furniture the good now. So i think all should be kept. Mayb re upholstery some items but all should be kept. Those 2 cane chairs are beautiful There no such thing as a "to much of a restoration" Luke
Only Luke, can handle Julie. Lol. He rolls with the punches in such a relaxed way. He’s hilarious with his dry humor.
And only she can handle him!😅
@@GodzHarleyGirlStudio Luke qould probably be bored without Julie. She is a constant adventure.

Luke's mum is so soft spoken. I love the English and Irish soft spoken conversations.
I love Raymond, "Do you mind if I don't do that" "Well I'm not that old." I love when you have him on.
Omg the discoveries are never never never ending. Fun fun fun. You two are so playful. I luv it
Very interesting video. Love seeing all the different areas of the Estate.

If you’re going to make it for someone to stay, make it very rustic. I would love to come and stay in that. Slow life down a bit. Well done Julie.
Love it, I would love to come and stay in there. And just paint. You are both funny.
