    I got a 2017 Chevy Silverado. Bought used in March of 2023. 6" RC Lift on 33s. Deleted the AFM with the Range technologies AFM delete and also installed the superior technology thermal bypass. Truck had 46,000 miles and changed all fluids so hoping a bit of preventative maintenance will cure most of the issues I've seen with these trucks! Lol. I love my Silverado PS, great review, mine is a Lt wish exact same options!

    Great review! I love the part where you refer to "the typical things you'd find under a truck seat in Texas"! Great idea about running in M5 to keep the AFM at bay, I will give this a try on my next test drive.
    I am currently shopping for a "new to me" truck. My 2008 Sierra Z71 Crew cab has suffered some frame rusting issues(typical for Maine), and I've had to take it off the road for repair.

    Great video, I've been researching trucks for months. I quickly dismissed Toyota and Nissan (low inventory in PA, too sporty, higher mileage held higher pricing) Fords are the new grocery getter in my opinion, somewhat complex and bulky motors/tight engine bay, RAM is a little flashy in and out but still nice and nicely priced. Chevy represents work to me, practical design, simple interior, legendary reliability and motors. "Like a rock"

      Thanks! I am now at 16,000 miles on the truck with no issue. Last weekend just finished the 3rd of 3 major road trips we had planned for this truck when we bought it, and we are definitely glad we went with the full size truck. With 4 people on a road trip you can’t have enough cubby holes, cup holders, or places to put things, I would have been very challenged fit everything in a smaller truck. Truck returned 20mpg overall on the last two trips that totaled 5000 miles combined.

    Nice, i purchased the same truck (color, model etc) back in May. President's day so end up getting a good deal as well. So far truck has 8,500 miles averaging 15.8 miles per gallon with 20 inch rims and 33's tires. I'am really happy with my truck, my first truck actually. Only thing that concerns me is what you mentioned about the AFM mode. I joined a chevy group on facebook and all they talk about is the AFM mode that has to be delete and others say best option is to keep it as it is. Who knows then.

    Great review. I'm in the same place right now. I currently have a 2019 Tacoma. I have 3 kids and the midsized just isn't cutting it anymore. I don't like the 2019 generation. I absolutely love the 2016-2018 generation. Looking at at 2018 LT Z71 right now that's listed at $32k with around 35,000 miles on it. I was hesitant about the 6th seat center console, but after seeing it in your truck and realizing the 3 kids can sit in the back with the wife and dog up front, I think the functionality of it is great. I can' wait to pull the trigger on one. Thank you.

      My 2000 Silverado had the buckets seats, and after getting the flip up center seat in this truck I don’t every want to go back. We have used the center seat in a pinch a several times for 6 people on short trips. I like having both the upper and lower storage it offers, and it still has 3 cup holders. For long trips my legs feel less crowed with the center floor section open. It is also nice to have the open floor space for a small cooler or the wife’s pumpkin pie on the way to Thanksgiving!

    • @commonsenserulesall9500
      @commonsenserulesall9500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@campbell0162 I call BS on not costing much more. To get a similar package truck you are looking at around a 10k price difference. 2011 Lt ext cab in 2011 was around 35-36k with the all star package. That same truck now is 44-46k. Now unless you are comparing two different trims then your statement may be true as you can get a 2019 silverado with similar features to a 2011 (upgraded to 2019 standards) and only be spending about 4-6k more.

    • @campbell0162
      @campbell0162 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@commonsenserulesall9500 well his truck is a base model Cheyenne Edition with a chrome package and side steps, but other than that it's pretty base as you can get. It's also a crew cab, and the new 2019 Sierra limited and Silverado LD are double cabs, so that affects the price substantially

    I traded my 16 Denali for the 2018 Z71...The 8 speed transmission on the Denali would on occasion make a loud clunking sound as if it was unsure what gear to it should be in...I would start out in the morning with the tow button on and that helped...I agree with you the six speed transmission paired with the 5.3 is the way to go...Great review...This truck has everything I need and I like the looks of it. I will try to do an update video soon, to discuss my one year opinions on the truck. I now have about 17,000 miles on the truck (not huge miles as I only drive it on trips and weekends). So, far the only issue that I have had was with the annoying Active Fuel Management. In March of 2019 I purchased a Range + AFM eliminator and it has corrected my drive ability issues with the truck now that it stays in V8 mode at all times. Another nice side affect of staying in V8 at all times has been about a 1 mpg increase in fuel economy. My overall average has improved from 17 mpg to 18 mpg since installing the Range + module. The truck served the family well this year on approx. 6000 miles worth of road trips.

I did get some of the “Chevy Shake” that some talk about, but a re-torqued my rear axle u-bolts and it immediately went away. They were surprisingly loose in my opinion.

Internet price was $36,226. With taxes, tags, etc it came out to $37,580. I had sold a F250 back in Dec and was waiting to find a truck under $40k. All the F150 I found were$40-41k. I have a 2018 Rally 2 which is very close to this truck. I don't notice the AFM at all. I wouldn't even know its working but for the light on the dash indicating 4 vs 8. My truck is still under warranty so I would not do anything to risk coverage. I'd say if your engine is under warranty leave it alone. Maybe if you have the cash laying around delete it after warranty runs out.

      So far no mechanical issues with the truck at 9000 miles. Just finished a 1700 mile road trip to Colorado for a ski trip, snowed off and on the entire time we were there so I got to use the 4 wheel drive probably more than I will in the next year in Texas. There have been no complaints from the back seat passengers about the lack of air. There are actually air ducts under both the front seats that put air into the floorboard of the rear passengers, as long as the air is set to go to the foot setting. The wife’s Equinox is the same way, so we just always make sure we have the air set to a setting that mixes on the floor vents as well.

My daughter’s rear facing car seat doesn’t fit behind me or I wouldn’t be able to drive it, and with it behind the passenger seat, anyone who sits over there has their knees in the glove box. So your choice in the Silverado was definitely the right one, as here I am shopping full size trucks.

    After putting spacers and the suspension (leveling kit) and getting an alignment afterwards. Would that be enough to prevent issues on the long run? Lots of people tell me that even after alignment it will damage prematurely components of the truck. Any advice?

    • @andymorton1737
      @andymorton1737  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think it has a lot to do with the height of the leveling kit used. A lot of trucks are running 2.5”-3” leveling spacers, since that is what it takes to make the truck level when empty.
      My truck only has a 1.5” spacer. I did that for 2 reasons: 1) to minimize the strain on the suspension, 2) I like to be able to haul stuff in my bead without it look like the truck is being squared.
      Any spacer is likely going to had some strain and wear to the suspension, but I’m looking as my suspension, I don’t feel that the 1.5” spacer is cause the angles to be too far out of spec, and I have had no issues to this point.

It was not a deal breaker for me but would have preferred that the truck had nav. If you look in the back ground in a couple of the shots you can see the 2018 Ram company truck that is my daily driver. It is a good truck that I should do a review on soon, but I didn’t see the need for two Rams in the driveway so that kind of ruled that out. I did look at the Ford F-150 with the STX package and the 5.0, I liked the truck but just preferred both the interior and exterior design of the chevy, so that is the direction I ended up going.

    @goforfish99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice review.. As for the AFM I find the issue is not the AFM but more the transmission programming. When you go to manual mode the programming changes. So even if you go manual 6 (where it will still go into V4 mode) it is much improved. It will downshift faster and you don't find yourself waiting (as long) for the truck too get motivated. Though 6th gear is still a bit tall for 40mph and the truck will lug, but again will downshift quicker then in D mode. I am good with it in M6 but it is a shame that I have to do it. One other annoyance is that you have to turn on the fog/driving lights each time you start your truck..

    • @andymorton1737
      @andymorton1737  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      doug gillespie Thanks, I will try the manual 6 mode, i noticed that in manual 6 it was still going into V4 so I have not spend much time to see if there was a difference. In mine when you are going 40-50 mph flat ground, and just slightly on an off the throttle the RPM will jump 200-300 RPM every time that you let off the gas and every time you roll back into it. I think that this providing some of the annoying feeling as well. For the most part I have gotten used to the way it acts, and really love everything else on this truck.

    • @andymorton1737
      @andymorton1737  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      doug gillespie I don’t feel like the strut spacers changed the ride at all. Many people do the 2.5”-3” spacers to get the truck perfectly level and I think those would affect the ride as you are changing the geometry of where the suspension rides and minimizing the amount of suspension drop you are going to have with that amount of level. I my opinion the 1.5” make the truck look like it should from the factory with an approximately 1” rake front to rear. The 1.5” spacer is also thin enough that it can easily be installed by just unbolting the lower strut mount, sway bar, and using a pry bar between the coil and upper control arm to push down the suspense. I did not have to loosen the tie rod, or upper control arm at all. $39 for the solid aluminum Motofab kit, I would say give it a try and if you don’t like the ride you aren’t out much. I drove mine around for a couple of weeks after the level before I took it in to get it aligned to make sure I was going to be happy with the ride.

      I still have the truck. I need to do an update video on it. But the short answer is that it just turned 80,000 miles and no issues to report (knocks on wood). I just dropped the transmission pan this past weekend to change fluid and filter. With all of the transmission issues I hear about I was expecting a lot of metal in the pan, but was happy to see that it was really clean. I did install a sure-cool by-pass valve for the trans cooler while I was doing the fluid change and that has made the trans temp run about 30-40 degrees cooler.
      I did buy a new 2024 Chevy 2500HD (will need to do a video on it as well) that is my daily work truck, so the 2018 1500 is going to hang around at this point for weekend/trip duties, so the mileage will probably slow down on it.

    • @andymorton1737
      @andymorton1737  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My only complaint with the transmission was due to the Active Fuel Management constantly going from v4 to V8. This problem has been corrected with the addition of a Range AFM delete that plugs into the OBD2 port. I now have V8 all the time and the transmission performs just like it should. I do have the 6 speed and I would suspect that you have the 8 speed the Dynamic fuel management in the 2019 LTZ truck so that is going to cause them to be different than what I have.
      I am convinced they all can have their problems, the way I look at it with a new one is that you get 3 years 36,000 miles to figure out if you have a keeper or a trader.

      All these new vehicles are overly complicated and everything is computer controlled. With that being said: you can remap the transmission and engine characteristics. It’s not so much a poor quality aspect with the Chevy/GMC as far as motor and transmission. It’s mainly because of unnecessary government regulations set forth by entities such as the EPA. Just do some research and remap the tune on your engine and trans. Also consider permanently deleting the active fuel management. It is the biggest weak link. I recommend swapping to a slightly upgraded cam and solid lifters. You’ll have an everlasting truck then with regular upkeep

      I have not had any transmission slippage issues with mine, but I have not towed with it at all and it only has 19,000 miles on it. Only issue I had was with the Torque Converter constantly locking and unlocking when it was going from V4 to V8 mode. That was corrected with a Range AFM module and now that it is V8 all the time it drives fine, added bonus to V8 all the time is a 1 mpg improvement in fuel economy, which I attribute to the truck being able to just run in 6th gear all the time without all the shifting back and forth. Before the V4 delete the tachometer was constantly moving up and down 300-400 rpm literally every time I made any movement of my foot on the gas pedal. There is no way that is good for the fuel economy.

      in my 2018 crew with the 5.3 6 speed it is terrible. Sometimes it wont even shift from v4 to v8 when I hit the gas.

      Common Sense Rules All same! I have a 5.3 and I immediately deactivated it and its been great. My dad had it on his last Avalanche and it started burning oil and he tuned it to deactivate it before the modules were out and it stopped burning oil.

    I love my 2019 Silverado. Two things I hate about it is: When cold It shakes on low speeds. I cant determine the problem and by the time I get to the dealer the engine is warm and it goes away. And the driver seat is not adjustable so the wife cant use the truck :-(

      I did end up getting the Range AFM eliminator not too long after this video, and I have been very happy with the way that it make the truck drive. It didn’t not hurt the fuel economy and if any thing I thing it may have actually improved.

      You might be able to see in the background is my daily driver company truck which is a 2018 Ram. My take is that I like the 5.7 engine and 8spd transmission on the ram better than the power train on the Silverado, but I like the interior/exterior of the Silverado better. The interiors on the 2019 Rams are great.

    Did you end up buying a range AFM shut off? That is the biggest thing I hate about my 2018 and makes me want to sell it already after 11k miles. Sometimes it wont even shift from v4 to v8 and I just dont think it is going to last long term. I have already been looking at the tundra with the 5.7l just for the simple fact that the engine is flawless and will hold up long term

    • @andymorton1737
      @andymorton1737  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I did buy the range AFM disabbler direct from their website. It has made a world of difference in the drivability of the truck. My mileage seems to be unaffected running in V8 mode all the time, and the constant back and forth of the v4 to V8 mode and torque converter locking and unlocking is gone. Fixed the only complaint I had about the truck, too bad it cost me an additional $190 to do it.

      @@andymorton1737 yeah that is my complaint with the truck too, I can't stand the shifting. Lately I have been leaving it in L5 and it stays in v8 full time, just havn't tried it out with anything over 60 mph yet

      I left mine in L5 all the time around town so that it didn’t drive me crazy. Only time I would put in Drive was on the highway. Bite the bullet and buy the Range AFM eliminator and you will like you truck again, trust me!
