  • We made our way up to Brewster, NY to give the newly retrofitted Tesla supercharger a try. The included "magic dock" allows for non-tesla EV's to charge at superchargers. It was an interesting and exciting experience! Please also check out the fantastic video done by Consumer Reports linked below!

Me2, it is almost like legacy automakers are trying to destroy EV adoption by implementing half-baked beta charging protocols, turning most non-Tesla EVs local area grocery getters. Another huge letdown by some is the location of the charge port behind the front wheel well, making dangerously long cables a necessity, so Taycan, F150 owners will not be able to charge here.

We have a 2021 VW ID4 RWD Pro S and absolutely love it. That being said, you're right; EA sucks. We also have a 2022 Tesla Model 3 and aren't thrilled about Tesla opening up SuperChargers to non-Tesla vehicles but it's really a necessity to accelerate the adoption of EVs. We charge at home 99% of the time and will continue to use EA with our ID4 because it's free for 3 years of unlimited charging but the Tesla charging experience is way, way better. Great video.

Thanks for pointing out that when the adapter unlocks, you push the plug in before you pull it out. So many guys doing this just yank and yank on the plug to take it out, and then say, that was hard. No, you're not paying attention. I'm afraid some people might start damaging the adapter/plug yanking on it like that.

V4 with longer cables and 800V architecture, which current Teslas cannot take full advantage of, will solve that. They just opened the first location with them in Denmark. For the time being, on V3 and V2, a simple cable extension will do.

      @OlsonFamilyElectricAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว

Valid points. The rollout of Magic Docks will be slow, and you are correct that only a fraction of total superchargers will be retrofitted, but it’s an exciting start. Also true that Superchargers aren’t “everywhere”, but it sure feels like it. There are over ten x the number of superchargers compared to EA, and they are being built out at a torrid pace. Also, they are wayyyyy more reliable than EA. Occasionally one or two out of twelve superchargers at a station will be down, whereas about a third or half of all EA chargers seem to be down at any given time.

With a little more space in each bay, then the inevitable towed all electric caravan or trailer can also be a breeze. Think of a Lightship with depleted battery. Drive up and both caravan and car charge up simultaneously by inductive (Wireless) means. That, I think is the probable future of EV charging.

I always hear that many - if not most - Tesla owners in the US bought it because of the Supercharger network. Here in North-Western Europe, the availability of chargers is almost never an issue: There is a huge amount of good non-Tesla supercharging networks, often closer to highways than Tesla chargers. Therefore I think/hope it's just a matter of time before also in the US, people don't have to select a car based on the charging network!
By the way, that Tesla Superchargers are now opening up is nice (here in the Netherlands already hundreds of Tesla Superchargers are open for other cars), but it is also a profit-driven decision: they simply want to get a piece of the pie that competing charging networks would otherwise get.

For me, the price premium of an EV is the primary reason I wouldn’t buy one. I live in a house, so charging wouldn’t be an issue. However, an ID.4 is almost $10k more than an similarly equipped Tiguan… which also has a nicer interior. Once that price gap is eliminated, I’m all for buying an EV. Sticker price is only one part of the equation. Remember you also won’t be paying for gas, and maintenance is almost non existent. For example the total cost of ownership of a model 3 is almost identical to a Toyota Carolla. If you charge at home, you are filling up for pennies.

You can make a case for pretty much any location. I think the logic behind putting it on the passenger side is when you park on the street, the safer side away from traffic is the passenger side. I just wish all automakers would agree on one location.

@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck yep my charge port is on the driver side door in the front unlike tesla where you back in and on the driver side door in the back the cable is too short to reach for the mach e. tesla needs to release longer cables for ccs cars trucks etc

Yeah the charge port location on some cars makes no sense!

Can’t happen fast enough. Maybe Tesla will make the other companies to smarten up. Most are total crap.

You are in trouble mate my European car mechanic friend is super wealthy he advised me never buy a modern German car or ev they are expensive money pits they break and parts are a rip off and when you sell you lose truckloads love the sound of the V8 as it went passed you. You should move to a 15 minute city you will fit right in 😂😂

I think your mechanic friend is envious. My creators' M-B doesn't break and parts are quite reasonable - cost less than parts for American cars (we have one or those too).

Your friend sounds like he just doesn’t like EVs, because all of that is objectively false. There is almost zero maintenance on EV’s.

GET A TESLA!!! Why deal with all these problems with other cars? A short charge cord. Taking up two parking spots with your non-Tesla automobile, half of charge America's charging stations down, only half the Tesla chargers set up to charge other car brands. Good grief !! Just get a Tesla!!

Total BS... go to any Tesla SuperCharger on a vacation or holiday weekend, and look at how long the lines already are.... Las Vegas, Baker, Barstow superchargers have huge lines already.... you think they want to see a VW ID4 in line with them? 48 cents per kilowatt at what 2.5 miles per KW? 19.2 cents per mile. Whats your time worth sitting around charging? I have a perfectly good Passat turbodiesel that's about 8 cents per mile and I'm filled up and ready for another 700 to 800 miles in 5 minutes at the pump, hardly enough time to wash my windshield. Speaking of which, no windshield service while recharging.

Charge ports should be front and center on all EV"S. Why nissan doesn;t refit the leaf with nacs is beyond me.
