I can see why Ford chose to team up with Tesla for charging. Those kWh charge prices are high. My local SuperCharger is only 0.27 cents kWh. Great video. 👍
As much as I want to think that electric charging is cheap now, it will only get more expensive in the future. Sorta like how UBER rides were cheap at first, but got real expensive after rising costs.
Most most most EV drivers charge at home 90 plus percent of the time… 2.7 cents a KWH overnight…. If I have to over pay at a supercharger once a month… oh well. Still way way way cheaper than gas.
I did uber with polestar 2 for a week. Every single time I need to charge I have to run around looking for a charger. Either theres a really long line, slow charger, or half of the chargers are not working. There was a time where I started looking for a charger at 20% and couldn’t find any available until I got to 9%. Meanwhile the driving by Tesla supercharging stations, has 3-4x the amount of chargers and only half are in used. This was in the Pasadena, Santa Monica, and WeHo area. So now, I will be receiving my delivery of model Y this Sunday.
It's a shame that electricity prices are so expensive at superchargers in CA. Glad that we have cheap home electricity rates here in ON...we pay $0.05 per kwh
This is absolutely correct. I just transported an electric Volvo and had to use other chargers and they suck!! Superchargers are so much better. I'm so glad I own a Tesla, they're just so much better, technology, safety and infrastructure . That's why Tesla is blowing everyone else away.
My brother-in-law and I have been big fans of yours for a while now. I got my model 3 back in 2021 and your videos helped me made my decision. The supercharger at Oakridge used to be my main one back then before I started charging at home. It's great that there are so many chargers there, but the place still gets fully packed mid date/late evening. Man, if I had saw you there, I would've totally asked for a picture lol
Does Everyday Jan know she can open the charging port by pressing the button on the charging cable? I understand you can push the charging door, too, but doing that all the time I'd be afraid I was going to crack it at some point.
I live in Hawaii and there is only 2 tesla superchargers. One too far away from me and the other one is always a two hour wait. I have been using Electrify America for over a year. When is working is so easy to DC charge my Model 3, in addition I only pay $0.29 per KWH at electrify America vise $0.68 per KWH at Tesla. So here in Hawaii Electrify America is the way to go.
Another great video Chris! You just demonstrated why all of these other automakers are deciding to jump ship and switch over to the Tesla NACS (North American Charging Standard) network. In other parts of the country, there are even less non-Tesla chargers available, which makes owning a non-Tesla EV very difficult if you plan to go long distance with it. I think there will be growing pains at first. But with Tesla building and opening so many superchargers, it should be less of an issue over time. Especially if places like apartment complexes build level 2 chargers for their tenants so they have a place to reliably charge at home.
That's exactly why I chose the Tesla. You can't beat the supercharging ecosystem. Plus, Tesla has been making cars for 10 years. Just got my Y LR 2.5 weeks ago. Love it.
I do this exact drive in my Mach E GT. I'll use Oakridge to charge to 100% and start my trip. With the EA membership, charging is $.42/kwh. I can usually make it all the way to Kettleman and charge at EA, or now I have the adapter and can charge at the Tesla stations there too. Never had any issues with the EA at that location, but I just recently tried the Tesla ones and it was a better location with more options for food. From there, it's hit or miss whether I can make it all the way or not to Anaheim. Some times I'll stop at Magic Mountain, there is an EVgo at In and Out. Now that I have my adapter though, my charging stops may change. The adapter doesn't work at Oakridge though which is a shame. My last road trip to/from San Jose to Vegas, I used my adapter and it seemed charging costs were more with Tesla, even though I used the membership with them as well. Still cheaper than my Expedition was for gas, but seemed more expensive than EA.
Also, the biggest problem I had was cable length. Harris Ranch and Kettleman both had easy spots to charge, but some of the other stops you almost have to touch the charger + take up two spots in order to charge.
One thing I realized is that it’s a lot more refreshing to just ignore safety score. The only part I pay attention to is the collision warning portion to judge my own awareness. Other than that, I drive my car according to how and what I feel like/need.
Their charging network is the #1 reason why I'd still pick a Tesla over all other EVs. I know they're allowing Ford and GM to charge at their stations now, but Electrify America is just so bad. Their chargers bug out A LOT, especially in the cold, and I plan on road-tripping more during the holiday season to save money when that kind of weather is around and plane tickets are stupid expensive.
The EA and EVgo stations are quite confusing at best. The high power stations that have dual CCS1 combo dispenser "hoses" is there for redundancy almost akin to a gas pump. You can use one or the other on that "pump", but not both. There are some dual CCS1 combo or CCS1 combo/CHAdeMO stations that will dispense power on both connectors at the same time, but the one who is plugged in first has priority of the charging rate and the second one plugged in will get the remaining almost like the v2 Supercharger. However those type of stations are not very common in high traffic areas. I just like the elegance of the Tesla Supercharger, just plug in and charge. All of the information you need to know is handled by your car including realtime pricing, stall availability, and if a stall is out of service. There's no clunky apps and no display screen for anyone to vandalize.
Love your videos. Considering buying a Tesla X or Y performance for my family thanks to your videos. Also, I just want to point out that West Coast Asian Americans seem so... happy? Maybe I'll move my family out West some day haha.
at that first electrify america charger, the app DID say that charger was unavailable, you just didn't notice it because it didn't fully grey it out, as the chadmo port was still functioning, it's only the ccs half of that charger that was disabled
I really wanted to try EV GO also but there's ZERO on the major 5 freeway road trip we went on. Also, charge point fast charging maxes out at 63 KW which is insanely slow. My only other choice was Electrify America but man... I feel like it's not there yet in 2023. What you guys think?
Chris, at 12:15 had you already set something up or set something up with your phone other than Apple Pay and the charger was "ready" for you? Or, was the only thing required was an Apple Pay app on your phone?

Tesla will need to work on the station rollout and layout with Gm and Ford coming on board as the current layout doesn’t work well design wise based on connector and cable placement not to mention when the CyberTruck comes out they will need to accommodate for those
Agreed. THey ARE constantly adding new and MORE superchargers to locations but with all these new non tesla's we gotta make sure there are enough for everybody
@@EverydayChris not to mention the layout of the station stalls. Many are in a straight line so you have to back up to them. With no standard of charging door placement on vehicles that means many non Teslas have to take 2 spots for the cable to reach. It should allow for more of a drive through style like gas stations. Not all Tesla installs are like that I realize, but many are.
@@RichardYoungCF Agreed. The weird thing with EA was the fact you can choose left or right side. Some tesla chargers allow you to drive in but most is reverse in only on the LEFT side
A Tesla Model S Plaid has a 100 kwh battery correct? So how is it possible to go to a supercharger, get charged for 40 kwh, and the battery level only increases from 10% to 35%? Shouldn't the battery have increased 40% instead of only 25%?
@@EverydayChris thanks for the video. Supercharging network is the best IMO. Id rather be waiting in a SC location that has 12,20,30,40+ charger than at EA where theres only 4-6 of them. Which is why, like you, I keep buying and staying in the Tesla eco system🤙🏽
Yeah just wait till more and more non-Tesla EVs start to clog up the Superchargers. Compound that with their incompatible port location ie.Ford Lightning taking up two spots. I can imagine temperature of Tesla owners start to rise. Opening up Tesla Supercharger stations to non-Tesla is not a great move. Couple of additional thoughts. After paying $20k more for my Model Y than there going for now and the opening up the Tesla charging stations to other makes, my next EV will be one of those other makes, then I can still use the Tesla charging stations.
So you’re going to compound your “loss” (which is really only theoretical) by selling or trading your Tesla after overpaying for it? And further so by buying an inferior EV? Finally, Tesla supercharging rates will surely be different (more expensive) for non-Teslas. You’ll really show them!
Excellent Video! I thought you were going dump all over EA and Charge Point. You points were very true and insightful. I own a Mercedes EQE. I was deciding between the EQE and the Tesla Model S (not Plaid). Mercedes has plug and charge at EA which works amazing 95% of the time, but the limited amount of chargers does dictate/restrict our road trips some (mostly taking away some scenic routes up the coast of Cali to Seattle). I have had no problems with EA chargers it just waiting in line or finding one on my routes. The range anxiety has currently stopped my wife from going to an EV. And she is not a Tesla fan. Hopefully soon EV's can have both charging ports.
I don't get it. Why would tesla devalue their chargers by opening them up to so many more cars? Doesn't that devalue Tesla? Why not get a Ford if your concern was just charging availability. Tesla owners now get crowded out. Is Ford building their own (tesla) supercharges too? That would be another story---a great story.
Why is electrify America so bad? I haven’t seen one TH-cam video where there wasn’t problems with EA. It’s like they’re not even trying. I would never consider any EV other than a tesla right now.
Its just how it is right now. Weirdly. EVGO isn't on any road trip route. Only city locally. EA works but can suddenly NOT work. Chargepoint is just sad lol. 63KW for their high speed charger? I'm feeling that tesla's adapter is going to be the new standard eventually with GM And ford tbh
