    I love how much more realistic this movie is of preteen girls. Having dumb crushes and having ur hormones go crazy and also talking about PERIODS. I really want somebody to dig out their old copy of Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret and turn it into a Pixar movie. It had a lot of the same vibes, with religious exploration and delving into the pros and cons and the different members of a mixed religion family, and exploration of hormones and slut shaming... tons of stuff that when I read it as a kid, wasn't talked about *anywhere* outside of that book where I grew up. Also, possibly one of THE coolest grandmas ever, although it may be that I'm biased as she reminded me of my own amazing, loving, confident, talented grandma.

Loop, Bao, Out... love those small glimpses into other people's lives, especially since if you see them on disney's streaming service you can see the extras where the makers get to tell the story behind them as well, and talk about what part of their own story that particular story came from.

    These kinds of movies are so important me and my best friend at the time were both 11 when we got our periods. She got hers first, at school no less, but because her parents purposely kept her in the dark (they wouldn't even speak the words 'period' or menstruation' and they told her not to talk about it because it was disgusting) when she saw the blood in the bathroom she had a MELTDOWN because she actually believed she was DYING. I was in the stall next to her and I remember her screaming and begging me to call 911.

    Comparing Turning Red to Encanto is missing the mark. They are two separate films with completely different cultural backgrounds that don't even serve the same purpose. As an Asian being raised by an immigrant mother this movie did a remarkably good job making her believable; I think that a lot of people are lacking the cultural understanding behind a lot of aspects of this movie and I hope more people give it a chance.
    I’ve seen other people say this and I completely agree: if you want to compare this movie with Encanto you should be comparing Mei with Isabela, not Mirabel. Mei is the golden child of the family, not an outcast.

    • @gabimartinez8862
      @gabimartinez8862 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Totally agree! I also just think that people instantly drawing comparisons between two Disney films about minority struggles as if one of them MUST reign supreme reads a little weird to me. If anything, I’d much sooner compare it to Luca which has just as much, if not more in common with this movie in terms of actual themes and the fact that they were made by the same studio. No need to pit minorities against each other, both of these movies are beautiful love letters to the cultures they’re depicting :)

    • @belpop
      @belpop ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I like how they tackle more of the part of puberty where you start to question why you please your parents and why you can’t just be an independent person without being pushed around. That theme resonated with me as a 1st gen Asian immigrant. My parents expect a lot out of me, but I started to question that as I grew. The period mentions and dumb crushes and embarrassment are really nice to see because it depicts a young teen girl really well. Though, that is only half of what the movie focuses on. I hope more people see this message as they don’t dig deeper into the meaning of the movie. It’s about a girl who wants to be her own person as she grows while also trying to please her mom who expects too much out of her.

    I was a VERY weird teen. I didn’t go through all this stuff, so the only thing I really relate to the movie was the slight rebellion to discover myself, but I didn’t explore until college because I always just wanted my parents’ approvals. I didn’t get a lot of it in childhood, so I wanted to make up for it in teenage years. So, sadly, I couldn’t relate a whole lot to this movie. That doesn’t mean it was bad, it was good, but I didn’t go through these sorts of problems. My focus was elsewhere. Still a good movie.

    Disney hitting me with not one but 2 movies about generational trauma and growth? YES PLEASE. Alhumdulillah. Also: Oof this is cringe BUT IT'S A RELATABLE CRINGE. Puberty needed to be represented by a giant, fluffy beast that embarrasses you until you accept it, own it and grow into it. I definitely would have benefited from this and a conversation afterwards instead of randomly reading the song of the lioness series at the age of 8 ("this happens to some women, it means you're going to have a baby someday!"😊) and being completely traumatized afterwards.

      Exactly, and now I think that the hate it got doesn't accurately depict the quality of the movie.
      For other people reading this thinking that Turning Red has done poorly, go to the Rotten Tomatoes score of Encanto and compare it to Turning Red. Even though it's still pretty early and is subjective to change, Turning Red has a score of 95% from its critics score while Encanto only has a 91%
      Although this doesn't automatically make Turning Red a better movie than Encanto since they're both very good in their own ways, it just goes to show how endearing Turning Red really is when it isn't swayed by constantly angry Twitter views and hate reviews.

    I have no idea why this movie got dumped on by so many people. Even though I was never a pre-teen girl... this movie brought back so much middle/high-school ptsd. I love that ever since Frozen really, Disney and Pixar have essentially just thrown the typical villain out the window completely. There is no villain. They have all dealt with the really vague ambiguities of our own lives. The light and dark that lives in all of us. Sometimes something scary and dark may actually be a blessing. Sometimes the other way around. Do we conform to what others want or be ourselves? Is there a balance between the extremes to find? And yes for the love of God please Pixar and Disney do an animated horror film. Like legit horror/suspense. PG-13. Do it! Good lord that would be amazing.
