    I am glad you didn't describe Ming as a "Karen". She was just following what had been drummed into her all her life. She was a loving Mom but she make some big mistakes that she learned from her Mom. By the way, the way they had Ming as a child recounting the big fight with her Mom to her daughter was a stroke of sheer genius. The "the farther you go" speech was terrific too. A beautiful movie. Ridiculously good.

    • @LowbrowDeluxe
      @LowbrowDeluxe ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually, it's a step beyond that imo. Ming specifically tried to do the opposite of her own mother, but she'd internalized so much of the perfectionism that it still came out the same, just via toxic positivity and lovebombing instead of her mother's disapproval and strictness.

    16:15 - *“What is up with her and mermaids?!”*
    The whole "mermaid" thing is because Mei-Lin is still so innocent that she can't even picture a man's lower body in her own fantasies, so her subconscious replaces that part with the "safe" mermaid's tail.
    16:27 - _“O. M. G!”_ - *“Oh my god!”*
    Yes, that's what that stands for. We know. 😉
    This movie sends an important message to growing children at the cusp of teen age - and that message is, "See? This is what it would look like, if the adults in your life took responsibility for once and apologised for fucking you up. Yes, it _is_ kinda sad that you'll only ever see it in a make-believe, magic panda movie, and never in real life. It's okay to cry; everybody else is crying at this bit, too." 😁

    • @FunFilmFare
      @FunFilmFare ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @16:15 Reminds me when I was Mei-Lin's age...I drew Antonio Banderas as a merman. For the same reasons. Also because I was reading "Emily Windsnap" and imagined him as one of the characters in that😆

    "...oh, this is embarrassing..." (as Meilin is pointed out)
    Mmm... no... not... not _yet._
    "...oh, that's so embarrassing..." (as Ming slams down the art work)
    _Closer..._ but... not _yet._
    "...oh, god, it's embarrassing..." (as Ming approaches the window)
    _Almost_ there. Just a _little_ longer.
    "...nooooo!!!" (as Ming produces the pads)
    _Now_ we've reached _embarrassing._ :)
    (Movie quote: "O - M - G") "...oh my god..."
    Yes, that's what she said. ... :)
    "...what year is this supposed to be..."
    Well, if you paid attention at the _beginning_ of the movie, they tell you. There's the _first_ picture of Meilin and her family when she was younger, that as "New Year's, 1994", and then there's the picture where she's _older_ and in basically the same scene, with the caption "New Year's, 2002", and _that_ version of her is the one that moves, and how she looks in the movie. ... Plus they tell you at the end.
    "...I didn't cry..."
    Well, this is a _Pixar_ movie, and Pixar causes tears less often than Disney. If you'd like some awesome movies that have a decent chance of starting the waterworks, then from _Pixar_ (of things I've seen), I'd go with 'Inside Out', and from just _Disney,_ try 'Encanto'. It's pretty recent, and I didn't see it on your it (or Inside Out) on your list of things you've reacted to.
