  • This video shows how to rebuild a (Pierburg) fuel pump for a 40 horsepower (1200) VW motor. It shows how to set the diaphragm to get the proper fuel pressure and installation and routing of hard fuel line to the pump. I used a rebuild kit from Wolfsburg West. Here is the link: www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/De...
The new diaphragm is made from material that is not affected by ethanol in the fuel. That is important because most hardware built before the 1970's was not made to withstand ethanol.

You are the perfect instructor for this video. We are rebuilding the same fuel pump. Thank you for being an excellent teacher!

Nice job! The 13-14mm preload can be confusing, I usually go with 13mm.

Hey, thanks. The 14mm draws the diaphragm down a lot. You saw I had to put the screws in before preloading otherwise the holes didn't line up. My 65 is all original so I wanted the pump to match. I was astonished at the quality of 60 year old German hardware with untold miles on it. The stuff is amazing. So far my pump is working like a champ.

Back again. Do you know if line to carb from pump needs to be primed? My carb bowl is not filling up. Ive removed carb top 4x to fill. I know I have the correct rod length and suspecting diaphragm may have a pinhole. No leaks anywhere i could see.

Mine worked without having to prime it. Did both of the little reed valves look good? They have to work for the gas to pump.

@thehomerepairguy as it turned out when I removed electric pump and repeated fuel tank, the line to chasis became kinked thus not allowing fuel to flow. Its good now just need to tune my Chinese carb ugggh

I’ve used purple power on aluminum engine parts and it corroded them. How did you get it to work so well?

    • @thehomerepairguy

You can only use it on bare metal parts and then rinse them. I tried it on a painted metal part and it took the paint right off. I don't trust it on plastic or anything except bare metal. It sure cuts grime though. Simple green is fine for most stuff so it is lower stress to use. It does well on grime too.

Do you know where I can get the screen filter? I’ve lost mine somewhere.

If money is no object you can buy a whole new pump at o'reilly's and use the screen out of it. I think they are like $40. You get all the other parts as spares too like the washer on top, etc...

Can you please tell me what size the nut is on the fuel line. I just got a rebuilt one and have no idea what I need to thread in there

I had the same question so I bought the hard fuel line to connect to my pump and it came with the nut and ferrule. It is a compression nut for 6mm tubing. It takes a 12mm wrench to tighten it. Guys sell them on The Samba, but you could probably find 6mm tubing ferrule and compression nut at a hardware supply place.

@@thehomerepairguy I gave up and ordered it from Wolfsburg West. As it turned out it did not pump enough for my 1600DP coming out of the gulches I discovered. Had to swap back to Brosol ( only changed because I do not like how they look) a 3rd way in. 300 happy miles around Big Island with great people and amazing cars with much fun to be had by all.

This pump can work with a 1600?

    • @thehomerepairguy

This pump is for the 1200. The 1600 pump is slightly different.
