Brian, you should suggest to them that, instead of having to run a cable to the AP computer, they instead make a version that has a small Bluetooth unit that plugs into the AP computer, does all the processing, and sends the results over to the screen to display. The screen would either need to plug into the steering wheel wiring harness have a battery for power. Probably a more elegant solution with the battery and reduces risk of voiding warranty.
That plug is difficult. I've had to plug/unplug mine a few times while we were reviewing the two Ingenext modules for OOS. Send this to elon and ask for a factory option? They could offer something similar and then those who want it can have it? Maybe post installation at service centers or available by mobile ranger? For those with existing tesla model's or who change their mind post sale about it. I think this is an amazing addition overall, I found it hard to take my eyes off the road when I test drove a model 3 perf earlier this year to use the screen. But the p95d I drove a couple year's ago didn't make me that uncomfortable thanks to the center display. 👍🏻🤔
Nice review but you were gentle and polite relative to the terrible position of the add-on screens relative to the steering wheel. It would probably be perfect for someone's 112 year old grandmother who has shrunk to 4' 7" and can't be seen when driving any car. They could probably redesign the device and adjust the screens lower and more toward the center (almost touching each other). This would be totally useless for me even if it cost only $75. On the other hand it was a good video to watch...thanks.
The issue I have with this unit is that it completely blocks the face oriented vents. I like the vents personally. And I do like the gauge package, but even for free, this aspect is a deal breaker...
Tesla could have probably installed something similar for $50 a car. I saw another version, for more money, that included additional information. However, it really blocked the AC vent, which could be a problem in Phoenix. I like this, but they should give a discount for your viewers. I’d probably purchase it if they did.
I am 5’10”, and judging by some screen shots that I took, sitting in M3, the displays ride too high even for someone of average height. The steering wheel will block the top, for me too. There appears to be ample space for them to have made it lower. This would have reduced the too high mouse ears look, as well, and made it look less out of place. This cluster is higher then a normal peer eye through steering wheel to instruments angle. Too bad, I want something like this.
It looks very nice, thanks for sharing and showing how we can install it. Does it block the air from the vent? My understanding is the air blows out the center vent, does this get in the way?
Good video. Thank you. I do remember Elon Musk responding to a person's question about not having a speedometer cluster in front of the driver. Elon responded with the question "Do you look at the speedometer when you're riding in a taxi? You won't want it."
All well and good, but Elon made that comment 5 years ago in 2016. Fast forward to 2021, and we're still nowhere near Level 5 autonomy. They could have just gotten rid of the gauge cluster AFTER they had a real FSD, if that was the real reason. But the real reason was extreme cost cutting, and Elon tried to sell this cost cutting as a 'feature'. Hilarious.
@@ganymede3141 exactly, they clearly designed the car to be a driverless robotaxi, the screen is not adjustable to the driver and the steering wheel could be removed and it would look the same on driver and passenger side. Clearly that was the design, it got released with an unfinished interior and FSD never worked in time.
I think the more important question is doe's your wife like it? We need the review of a minimalist hater. If she is happy then I'm in. No instrument cluster drives me nuts still. LOL.
I knew it was better to be short. 😜 About the design I would have prefer something more (futuristic) in the style of the car, not those round screens mimicking some old analogic displays. For me it doesn't fit.
Yea I love having nothing there. It really turned me off the first time I saw the Tesla but it grew on me and since I bought my own, I LOVE the unobstructed view.
So you like the unobstructed view because it lets you keep your eyes on the road better, but you don't mind taking your eyes OFF the road all the time to check your speed and nav and everything else on that 15 inch distraction off to your right. Makes perfect sense. 😂
@@ganymede3141 It does when you drive one. First off in a normal car with a dash you are still taking your eyes off the road. Looking down versus right isn't any real difference. Secondly I almost never have to look at my speed because TACC is on 90% of the time. Secondly I generally know where I'm going so don't need nav either, and most any normal car with a nav will again have the same issue. Also voice commands do 90% of what I need outside of the common functions right on the wheel/stalks. I get you it seems weird, and I thought the same BEFORE I owned one. Now I get in a normal car and my head explodes with all the clutter that I don't need 90% of the time.
@@JohnVanderbeck I've driven a Model 3, and I know what it's like. Firstly, most instrument clusters are in front of the driver, and require only a 5 to 10 degree glance down to look at the gauges. The Tesla's display requires about a 30-35 degree glance to the right. That's a big difference in how far your eyes move off the road and how far your peripheral vision moves with it. Most cars these days, even cheap Mazda 3s, offer a head-up display, which means that you don't have to take your eyes off the road at all. You say you don't check your speed, or look at the screen for nav, but you have to look at it to change climate and other things. The whole selling point is the big 15 inch screen, so if people don't use it or need it, why have the big distraction in the first place? See the conflicting argument there? That screen is more of a distraction than you realize, and people use nav all the time. I use it around town at least 3 times a week to find some new restaurant or store. My point is, Tesla could have put a HUD in the Model 3, put cheaped out to cut cost to the bone. I drove the Model 3 for a week, and the longer I drove it, the more the center screen irritated me. Glancing to the right is more fatiguing on the eyes than left and right. When you work on your computer, do you place your screen a foot to your right so you have to crane your neck to the right? No, you place the screen directly in front of you, because it's the most ergonomic thing. It does not have to be busy or cluttered. It can be simple but should also be functional and ergonomic. Simplicity and functionality are not mutually exclusive.
@@ganymede3141 do you ever check your mirrors? Looking at the display on the model 3 is easier in my opinion but if you don't like it so be it. But once a habit is formed it becomes natural. I can't stand all the buttons and clutter. I get confused in my wife's Lexus RX. I have only one display to monitor for all of my driving information. Doesn't get any simpler in my opinion. But this goes back to if you don't like it don't buy it.
@@anthonymartin8230 Yes, I check my mirrors, but there's currently no better way to check what's behind you than to look up at the rearview mirror or left and right at the side mirrors. There is, however, a better and more ergonomic way to display critical information to a driver in an ergonomic fashion, and that's to put a display or HUD right in front of the driver and in their line of sight. Tesla includes this display on the Model X and S, but not the 3, presumably because they were cutting cost to the bone and they cheaped out. It definitely has nothing to do with 'simplicity'. I drove a Model 3 for a week and having to constantly turn my head to check speed and navigation became, quite literally, a pain in the neck. By the end of the week, it frustrated the hell out of me. Based on that experience, I actually did cancel my reservation. When I sit and work on my computer, I have the screen right in front of me, not a foot or two to my right, and have the wall right in front of me. Same with watching TV. I sit in front of the screen, and not 6 feet to the left of it and turn my head to watch it. It really would not have cost more than a few hundred dollars to put in a gauge LCD in front of the driver, but instead, the interior of the Model 3 looks like the designers realized that the design was due the day before presenting to Elon, and they pulled an all-nighter and ran out of time, deciding to slap a bare steering wheel on there, bolt an iPad to a piece of wood and call it done. It's not 'minimalist'. It's cheap and lazy design sold as 'minimalist'. A well designed car interior is ergonomic, intuitive, comfortable, welcoming, and functional. The Model 3's interior is none of those things.
Hi thanks for the video. I installed this, and it works correctly, but now nothing on my Tesla works including no auto pilot no cruise control no cameras among other things. Any idea what I did wrong?
I like it, but I would never get it because of needing to take the dash apart. Also, unless it’s Tesla authorized I wouldn’t want it to void any warranty‘s during servicing and therefore it would need to be taken off every time before service. That doesn’t work, so either get it authorized in its current set up or make it easily removable for factory service.
Before I got my Tesla, I thought I’d want to find a through-the-steering-wheel display, but now that I’ve been driving my Y for 6 mos, I have no desire or need for one. This has a very crisp display, but the shape is too weird.
Did you notice any increase to power usage? I know that may seem arbitrary but it’s hard to tell how bright they really are on camera.... I have a video monitor on my video rig that uses more power than my 70” TV due to its brightness, so curious if these made any impact on energy usage. Thanks for the video.
great video , I love your vids. I was just wondering if this blocks your air con and heat to your face . there is 2 instrument clusters the rectangle one and the one with mickey mouse ears. price difference is slightly different .
I have the original rectangle one others have mentioned in the comments. I kind of like the look of this one more. Seems much cleaner. Not a fan of the silver housing though. I painted mine black. which I would most likely do with this. just wonder if it works out of the box on a 2020 Model 3.? When I received the rectangle model, I was disappointed and had to wait another two weeks, because it required some power adapter to work with the 2020 models.
I feel like BeGood has a better solution with their HUD. It flows nicer with the car vs these Mickey Mouse ears, but there are some ppl that prefer this solution. HUD costs around 150$ as well, so it’s a bit cheaper, and requires less work.
Great review I am very interested in the Model Y but it's not yet available in the UK my only thoughts are I am 6ft5inches tall would I feel comfortable driving and is their plenty of adjustment in steering a seats as I like to sit low in a car ?
Hey Mickey! That display looks cool. It kinda looks like it belongs there after you stop rolling on the floor about the Mickey ears gag. Maybe it should be a little smaller though, and lower.
Why is Tesla so weird about the minimalistic look. I prefer the speedometer behind the steering wheel. Eventually competition will force them to add it
Love it look great like came from factory look awesome no lag no issue . Nice retrofit Look great is like 2 different model aftermarket this one Mickey Mouse style and the square one look great too The reason why I don’t put my order yet is because CarPlay is not there BUT now with this definitely I’m doing my Tesla order now ! And This doesn’t affect the AC Vents at all nothing is just normal 😂 I can’t wait to get my Y model to installed look great and the best part is the CARPLAY mod is fuc”””g incredible.... Elon Musk should open that window for us made this display already like upgrade and HEADUP display and Steering wheel heater !
Nobody actually needs a display in front of them. It's just a mental weakness that we feel more comfortable having. It's a psychological thing. I always thought it would be better to have a display in front behind the wheel as well but when I got my model 3 I found that not to be the case.
I think it looks good and I also think that it is useful very good video I also like that even tho it’s not original I don’t know if it’s me but it actually doesn’t look like it’s not original it looks good and looks like it’s something you can add from Tesla
Wow Brian I was thinking about tweeting you today. I was wondering if you can install a Heads Up Display in Model 3/Y to be displayed on the windshield with as little obstruction as possible? Think it would look better than placing this contraption behind the steering wheel.
I love the idea but not the execution. As a fellow tall person, I don't think the location works for me. Best Features: Speed in a better location, Both power and Miles left, Odometer. But I would say the handiest feature would be if it showed if there was a car in your blind spot (since Tesla has decided to put the quarter circle markers in the worst spot possible to sell FSD).
The need to have a display in front of you is based purely on getting used to it, not and actual need. Just like how people want the roar of an engine. If we all grew up with evs from the beginning, nobody would want or know what a roar of an engine is. Just like the gauges in front. A slight look to the right, is no more of an issue. Lets face it most of the information you do not need, or can as easily see to the right. It is more of a distraction in front of you while driving then to the right. I have always driven gas cars with gauges, but I am looking at it from a first principles approach, not one from past experience or analogy. (Elons words). Another example is people that have driven gas cars that have center dash gauges for years, do not care either. Another point is what you mention, is that new tesla owners who are tall, like the tesla better because they can now put the wheel where they want and not where they can see the gauges.
I looked on Amazon but couldn't find it....can you send me the link? Also not a fan of taking the dash apart...any suggestions who I can get to install it?
I have issues with my Model S screen because I'm tall and can't see the top of the screen when the steering wheel is adjusted to a halfway comfortable place. I actually can't put the wheel exactly where I want it because it would block the speedometer numbers completely as well as some other important info including navigation turns. As it is, I've never actually seen the blue flashing border because of this. They changed from flashing the entire border to just the top just about the time I got Autopilot, which aggravates me to no end. I still don't understand why they made that idiotic change. I do have a GPS HUD that only has speed (I have another one that has other things on the display but I don't find any of the other info useful) and that works pretty well but because Tesla hasn't seen fit to give standard data on the OBDII port I'm stuck with a speed reading that is slightly laggy. It's not a major problem but it is an issue. By the way, I got an OBDII connector and I use that to draw 12V to a USB charge port mounted close to my phone mount on the dash. The 12V pins on the Tesla OBDII port are the only thing that matches the standard. It works great and was much easier to route than going all the way from the rear of the console, not to mention leaving those ports and power socket completely free of any extra load. The bottom line is that I love this display but wouldn't get it because of the sight line issue. I wish they made a HUD version that couldn't be blocked by the steering wheel. I actually prefer the Model 3/Y sole center screen because of the fact it can't be blocked.
I will get this for one reason and one reason only: For the LARGE signal indicators. I cannot hear the signal tone at all so I spend an embarasingly large amount of time driving with my blinker on. Otherwise, I don't see the point.
I still don’t understand why Tesla can’t just throw in a heads up display. Tesla would get to keep their clean design and the customers will get the info they need within their eyesight
I'm not a fan of the look, or having to take the dash apart to install, but it's nice to have options for those that prefer such a display.
I love having air directly on my face without having air directly on my hands. This device looks like it will block the air from ventilating my face.

However, it really blocked the AC vent, which could be a problem in Phoenix. I like this, but they should give a discount for your viewers. I’d probably purchase it if they did.
I think it might be a problem not only for tall guys, but also for those who likes to sit high AND have the steering wheel low (like yours truly).
0:46 every dad ever lol
I am 5’10”, and judging by some screen shots that I took, sitting in M3, the displays ride too high even for someone of average height. The steering wheel will block the top, for me too. There appears to be ample space for them to have made it lower. This would have reduced the too high mouse ears look, as well, and made it look less out of place. This cluster is higher then a normal peer eye through steering wheel to instruments angle. Too bad, I want something like this.
Did you ever get any further information from the vendor? There are 'two" sellers online to Amazon.. but who is the actual vendor and contact info?
About the design I would have prefer something more (futuristic) in the style of the car, not those round screens mimicking some old analogic displays.
See if you can get a review unit from ingenext! Would love to see a review on their diy ghost or boost with bonus features.
Hi thanks for the video. I installed this, and it works correctly, but now nothing on my Tesla works including no auto pilot no cruise control no cameras among other things. Any idea what I did wrong?
I don't have a Tesla. I was wondering if you can turn off MCU and just use the display behind the wheel.
Love the look.
Tesla have to make a display them self. One that is not bigger then the das. Maybe a little horizontal.
nice video , so when you installed the gauge did you shut down the car or just plug in the harness and left the car on .looks nice though.
If Tesla made this exact thing then everyone here would think it's amazing. The end.
I just did a video comapring a tesla to lexus would you mid sharing what you like more?
Still frustrating to me that companies will got through developing this, BUT we still don’t have a decent Heads Up Display option out there.

From Japan.
Very informative, great video.
Looking for the latest firmware.
If I can just get a plug from the computer to the iPhone/iPad and mount that behind the wheel and make it about $50, I'd buy it.
Always hated that the drivers information display was missing
Someone please send these people a good designer. Humble request!
Wuhan is still locked down
they should add this as an option. i got an oldcar with 0 displays and would miss my dash gauges
Wonder is the subsequent tesla SW update will make it a $600 brick
I love the video! Do you think you can test the other displays out for sale? There is a more rectangular one available.
nice review u should grab the yoke .
Nice retrofit
Look great is like 2 different model aftermarket this one Mickey Mouse style and the square one look great too
The reason why I don’t put my order yet is because CarPlay is not there BUT now with this definitely I’m doing my Tesla order now !
And This doesn’t affect the AC Vents at all nothing is just normal 😂
I can’t wait to get my Y model to installed look great and the best part is the CARPLAY mod is fuc”””g incredible....
Elon Musk
should open that window for us made this display already like upgrade and HEADUP display and Steering wheel heater !
Nobody actually needs a display in front of them. It's just a mental weakness that we feel more comfortable having. It's a psychological thing. I always thought it would be better to have a display in front behind the wheel as well but when I got my model 3 I found that not to be the case.
The display is actually very useful and for serious drivers its even better to control all your parameters/settings just like the audi cockpit system
I just did a video comapring a tesla to lexus would you mid sharing what you like more??
Doesn't the right scroll flip change your cruise speed +5. How's doe's that work as a display controller too?
Another point is what you mention, is that new tesla owners who are tall, like the tesla better because they can now put the wheel where they want and not where they can see the gauges.
will there be any problems with the warranty or any problems then with the tesla system? is it 100% safe to have this plugged to computer?
Nice video !
I love the minimalist look of my Model 3 so this is a no go for me.
The unfinished look?
Yeah I want this
Even in KM mode odometer displays miles
I looked on Amazon but couldn't find it....can you send me the link?
Also not a fan of taking the dash apart...any suggestions who I can get to install it?
Does the display reflect off the windscreen at all during the day or night?
That looks so cool. :)
What happened with your other display? Did they ever manage to update it for signal changes? Curious to see if this one breaks too.
Too much redundancy for me, regardless of price. Appreciate you showcasing it though 👍
I like the idea of this, but without it showing navigation I cant justify it.
That’s fairly cool

Can anone who has this model tell me what is the diameter of each of the circular gauges? Thx!!
Where is the installation video? Not on Amazon.
Sorry and thank you facebook.com/100027897732072/videos/709197280020190/
I still don’t understand why Tesla can’t just throw in a heads up display. Tesla would get to keep their clean design and the customers will get the info they need within their eyesight
I don't think the speedometer is "way bigger" :) ... it is a bigger font: Image: i.imgur.com/opwOCJZ.jpg
it is much bigger than the new speed display in version 2020:48:26
