Imagine sentry mode notification on your phone (for alarm state) that shows you the cameras in real time when you open the notification. Tesla should add this to their official app. They probably don't want people bogging down their LTE though. They should have an LTE plan that isn't throttled, does this sentry thing, and lets you turn your car into a wifi hotspot.
@@UndecidedMF I also wish they gave their mobile app a revamp and made it fit the design language of the os it is running in (iOS/Android) or carried over the design language and cues from their V10 car software. The more I look at the app, the more I notice that it looks like an app from the original Droid days. I write frontend and mobile software for a living so I'm probably just super picky about this stuff, but still.
As a fellow tech nerd, many of your video's pop up in my search. You're on your way to the big leagues. Just keep grinding the content. It will pay off if it hasn't already.
I’d probably go Stats if I had to choose one, but I think Stats and TeslaFi complement each other really well. Stats gives you a great snapshot of the car for day to day use and offers up additional controls. TeslaFi gives you the really deep data for more infrequent analysis. If you don’t care too much about the deep data ... Stats all the way.
One of the best uses of abetterrouteplanner is to gauge how long range one actually needs when deciding what EV to buy. Is it ok to go down in battery size if the charge rate is good? How msny longer road trips do you take per year and what are the typical travel times for them in all the different cars available. Is it worth the extra money? Is it worth it to just not stop at a petrol station all the time?
Matt super, you hit the nail right on the head, great recommendations and Tesla needs to open up. I who live in Denmark only wish to add apps to my Tesla, which as a person living in Denmark only need here, also follows your podcast TBD :-)
I love your videos! Having the name or logo of the app you are pronouncing would have been extremely beneficial. I had to listen to several pronunciations multiple times to figure out what you were saying.
I agree with Andy, I am having a hard time picking up the names of the apps you are referring to. The music you have in the background sometimes drowns out what you have said.
Sorry about that ... should have included them on screen. Definitely will next time around on a video like this, but I did include links to everything in the description. Thanks for the feedback!
Love the Stats app. Wonderful amount of info and custom features. Also enjoy the route planner. Both are really good choices and Stats is worth the money.
Great info, Matt, and thanks! If you're still looking here, do you find that TeslaFi won't let you car sleep? Based on the screen info at 3:56 in the video, the answer is no. Looks like your car sleeps fine. I have not been able to tweak the Sleep settings in TeslaFi in order to make that happen. So, unplugged, I lose close to 1 mile per hour. I just emailed TeslaFi to see if they can recommend anything, Otherwise, as geeky cool as the app is, I'd rather have the range back. One thing I don't want to do is have to restart logging manually every time I drive, and disable it manually after the drive. If you have any hint, I'mm all ears. Have a 2020 M3 LR AWD if that matters. Thanks!
Hey Matt in your experience how much additional phantom drain have you seen with Teslab and TeslaFi during your time using them? Awesome and informative video as usual!! Thanks!!
When I first started using TeslaFi well over a year ago I noticed some increased phantom drain (very minor), but turned on a could of sleep mode options in the settings and it resolved itself. But in general, I’ve noticed no increased phantom drain when using one or two of these at a time. In recent months I’ve been testing 4 or 5 out at a time ... in those cases, yes, I saw phantom drain increase, but that wasn’t normal use. You really shouldn’t see anything.
Thanks Matt. This was a good introduction to apps linked to tesla. As you have used many of the apps what do you think is a value for money subscription rate that a third party could charge per month or year?
I think this video should start with a very clear explanation that giving credentials to the third party apps is VERY risky as they have access to your account, car's location, unlocking the car, starting it and many other things. I am using Temperota for my smartwatch and Ionity as a secondary network option.
One obvious and useful Tesla app would be an implementation of an audio/video chat such as Zoom or a Skype-like app. The FM radio is almost certainly an SDR device, some have amazing spectrum coverage such as 50 to 500 Mhz, that could make a cool radio nerd app.
It should be straightforward to add an openid or “apps list” on the Tesla account page. Question is, how many people want this? On the point of opening up the in-car ecosystem to 3rd party apps - I disagree. As a dev myself I understand the nuisances regarding hardware performance and how tricky it can be to sandbox 3rd party apps. On an iPad this can be managed with enough dev time and protections. Even the Apple App Store misses sketchy code in apps on occasion and their review process is possibly the most stringent. However in a car - a machine that could kill you if the UX wasn’t snappy on a display which feeds info to a driver controlling a machine that could potentially take a life- well that needs a different risk profile. I think keeping the primary display computer isolated from external code (3rd party apps) is the way to go for now.
Hi Matt. Regarding the STATS app- I’m trying to get a clear answer about the main reason I want a Tesla app: will it tell me the total amount of charging I draw from my home charger? I want to know the kWh that I use for a day, for a week or month. Or better yet, over a period I can set (like the 8 week period of my electricity/Hydro bill). The App store only says 'A graph that shows stats related to your charging sessions’ or 'Displays several detailed information related to charging the car’. Or is there another app that might do this cheaper? Thanks so much.
Hey Matt. Thanks for all the content , really love your stuff! I was hoping you could cover the effects of radio waves, wireless and frequencies on the body. There’s a lot of rumours going around about how bad it is for us, especially now 5G is being introduced. Would love to hear your thoughts !
Love the review but also interested in using the app reviewed. Problem is you speak the app name but the actual name and spelling to find the app is never shown on screen.
Great video. My comment is that I am hard of hearing and couldn’t clearly hear the names of the apps. Having those important words beside the number would have been useful. I was interested in number 5. Was it called stats?
Thanks Matt, for another great video. Echoing another responder, your stuff is getting pretty slick. Thanks for the time and energy [pun fully intended] for doing this.
If you like numbers and data like I do then I suggest Scan my Tesla. It’s a little pricy if you include the necessary hardware you need to install as it reads the can bus data but there’s a lot of data to be read!
I agree. Would like to see Matt do a deep dive into ScanMyTesla. I now understand I need to take what the Stats app is telling me about range and battery health with a grain of salt when I can see the Nominal Full Pack reading along with the SOC and SOC expected reading. SMT is worth the cost if you want to geek out and see the real numbers.
Great content as usual Matt. I wish my car had some of this integration, even the BMW app itself is glitchy and has so little useful data it does not get used very often.
Hi, thank you very much for these reviews. Please tell me, for TeslaFi to record charging information (how many kW charged), do I have to open it all the time and ask it to log the info ? Or can it log charging info directly to my Teslafi phone app without me having to remember to "turn it on each time" ? Also, can we have one account on two phones depending upon who is driving the car ? I have the same questions for your final app suggestion, Tezlab. Thank you if you know the answers to these questions. ;o)
Brilliant observations of the current offering and limitations. I do worry about the authentication process. For that reason I've not enabled 3rd party EV.energy to control the charging of my car. They offer clever ability to charge when grid is at its greenest. But I'm not putting my Tesla password into their app. I agree with you that it would be fantastic to have a tesla app store. Another revenue stream potentially.
Another excellent video, so useful thanks Matt. I use ABRP travelling across Australia and was aware of TeslaFi (but cant afford the range drop when travelling without superchargers). The others I didnt know and will check them out and select one. Maybe Stats
Thanks, Ken. If you give Stats a shot, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Tezlab is worth checking out too since it has a free base level to kick the tires.
Undecided with Matt Ferrell cool, thanks for the personal reply. We are currently racing ‘home’ to Kalbarri WA both in the SR+ and diesel motorhome as the Australian states have been closing borders and going into lockdown. Still have over 1000 miles to go, with only 15amp 240V single phase chargers in caravan parks across the Nullabor. (No grid electricity here, only diesel gens at the roadhouses) I have concluded that EVs are not the best tool to travel fast road trips where there is no grid! Funnily enough, yesterday with the Tesla fully charged, we rocked into a gas station to fill the RV. No diesel left. Took 3 hours for tanker to arrive, so topped off the Tesla from the RV solar at 2kW A Tesla win for a change! Just downloading Tezlab now to give it a try. Thanks for the tips
Do you mean Android users? That is a limitation, but not one that I thought would knock it off the recommended list. It’s such a good app. Tezlab’s improvements have really jumped it up my list of go-to recommendations ... and that is cross platform. A good alternative to Stats ... just lacks the Siri integrations on iOS.
Very useful vid. Any issues using something like Tesla Fi and Stats at the same time? Or will it maybe cause more vampire drain or step on each other's toes so to speak. It looks like all the data in Tesla Fi is great but I'd like a phone app to have more control in my hand.
I'm not sure if it exists but I would LOVE an app that allowed for set points while driving. In the winter my range is reduced significantly and it drives me nuts. I wish there was an app that would turn the heat off when the car reached a certain temp (say 70 F) and then turn on again when the temp drops down to a lower set point, like 60 F.
These apps make it feel like taking a key to a Tesla then saying, “at least I can see the insides of the metal now.” They’re so gross looking. But I get the point…just destroys the simplicity and clean image Tesla brings so much comfort and relief to.
Love all of your videos! I was so excited to try each app as you described them, but couldn't hear the app names because the music overpowered it. I tried listening several times only got a few. Thanks! Your work is appreciated.
Indeed. It's going to be really interesting when one of the apps like Teslafi gets hacked. I suppose a few thousand Teslas will end up with water inside because the hackers decide to roll down the windows while parked or something.
You should put the app name when you show what number you're rating them. With "Stats" (?) We never see that name and it's not always clear how the app name is spelled. Would help us find the apps.
Great review. Tesla did add the ability to review your dash cam in the vehicle. It also recently introduced a feature where it shows all or only Sentry event videos and it puts a red dot on the timeline to show you when the event happened. But it’s definitely not as cool as the app you are referring to. In your review.
Hi Matt. Great content. I developed an iOS app like Stats but unable to publish the app on app store. Apple is asking permission from Tesla. Can you help me where I can get that? I tried to contact Tesla but negative. Thank you.
Nothing at the same level that I’ve found. BUT Tezlab is a good cross platform alternative to check out. It does have a free tier that gives you a rolling 7 day window to try it out.
Great job reviewing these apps. Super helpful. Do you think some day Tesla might set up their Sentry Cam to be able to view the files directly on the car display?
I’m waiting for my MY. Recently I learned Homelink is a $300 option. I’d be interested in your input about spending the money for Tesla Homelink or purchase a product to offer garage door automation with geofencing that could be used with any garage that has a wireless opener. I’m not tech savvy but I didn’t find anyone product that seems really good and reliable. Luv to have your opinion. Thanks, I really like your approach.
You could look into smart garage door openers like MyQ, but I’d be nervous about having my phone as the trigger to automatically open the garage door. Perhaps using a smart tracker linked to a smart home hub like Smartthings. Leave that tracker in your car. When your house detects the smart tracker it triggers the door. It’s a bit convoluted and requires some setup and cost (cost of hub, tracker, and garage door opener add on). Don’t think it’s a better option than the $300 Tesla option.
These are great app suggestions. The one thing I would love to see added and I'm surprised Tesla hasn't done yet is support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Calvin Croucher I know people with both and I can’t find any advantage in having those apps built in to Tesla that would warrant diverting Tesla software engineers from their current tasks.
@@bigdougscommentary5719 having it integrated into several of my previous cars I can say first hand the voice commands with Android Assistant are exceptional. yes, Tesla and other OEMs should see the vehicle as an iPhone on wheels. Build support for 3rd party apps. Even take 30% of revenue during app download. Yes, this is another revenue source.

There is no need for Tesla to open their authentication system to 3rd parties; they should simply allow users to generate API keys so 3rd party apps can use them to authenticate. Ideally you would generate 1 API Key/app and this way it is very easy to remove access to a single app without impacting the other ones.
@@UndecidedMF What I mean is that you should be able to generate this API Key yourself and provide it to TeslaFi for instance instead of having to give out your username/password. Of course, if on top of that, it would be possible to assign permissions to that API Key (like, read only) that would be perfect. Good video nevertheless.
The ones I’ve mentioned don’t, but that’s not necessarily true for all Tesla third party apps. Gotta be careful there. But I haven’t noticed any increased phantom drain when using one or two of them at the same time. I have noticed increased drain when using 4 or 5 at once though ... but that’s just me ... I’m not normal. 😜 I tend to test out a lot of these (including some that are still in development).
What is a "third party” product? There is the manufacturer that makes a product and the customer. The customer doesn’t make products. I think after market is the correct term.

Great review. Tesla did add the ability to review your dash cam in the vehicle. It also recently introduced a feature where it shows all or only Sentry event videos and it puts a red dot on the timeline to show you when the event happened. But it’s definitely not as cool as the app you are referring to. In your review.
Stupid question but, is there anyway that using any of these apps can void your warranty?
Hi Matt. Great content. I developed an iOS app like Stats but unable to publish the app on app store. Apple is asking permission from Tesla. Can you help me where I can get that? I tried to contact Tesla but negative. Thank you.
Great idea with standardizing the authentication.
Thanks for these resources Matt. I know you are a designer and always on the lookout for well designed products.
Appreciate that.
Hey Matt. For those of us who don't use iPhones, is there a 'Stats' app for Android?
Business Design Corporation No. The stats app developer says he's iOS only. On the other hand, you can do ScanMyTesla, which is Android only.
Nothing at the same level that I’ve found. BUT Tezlab is a good cross platform alternative to check out. It does have a free tier that gives you a rolling 7 day window to try it out.
Get ScanMyTesla. I bought an Android Moto G7 just to run SMT. It's that worthwhile to see the data.
Nice to know an iMac box fits nicely in the boot ;-)
I was wondering if anybody would recognize that box. 😜
Hi Matt any of those app shows battery temperature? Thanks
None that I know of.
Great job reviewing these apps. Super helpful. Do you think some day Tesla might set up their Sentry Cam to be able to view the files directly on the car display?
Elon said they’re working on it
Not sure when, but it's only a matter of time.
Most of those features are already in the Tesla app
Great video as always!
Nice! An app path for Tesla's future.
Would like a third-party app/Tesla feature to be able to raise the windows up remotely.
In the Stats app, is there somewhere they show lifetime Wh/mile, as the car’s UI does?
TeslaFi can use an API token. No need to give them your password although admittedly its not a simple process.
While I do enjoy the Tesla voice commands they can hold a candle compared to Google Assistant artificial intelligence. Hay Google... What's the weather tomorrow, make a reservation at Carrabba's for 1 pm, play some smooth jazz, tell Roni I'll be home in an hour, navigate to my next appointment... Smooth as silk and flawless accuracy. Tesla isn't even close.
Direct access to Siri or Google in the car would be a killer feature.
HEY MATT,
My Queries For MODEL Y:
-Does the Rear window Go all the way Down? Or is it like Model3
-Can the Under Boot Storage, Have Enough space for a 19inch Spare Tyre, if not Maybe a Donut spare Tyre? *I'm Oldschool
- does Water get in When you Open the Rear Boot Hatch If it's Wet/Raining.
- 0-60, 0-100, Rolling 50-130/150.*not really that important tho.
- Does the Frunk have Baggage/Grocery Hooks Like the Model3
- Rear Boot Lights
- Foot Lights for Driver and Passenger
- Door Lights
- How High does the Rear Boot Hatch Opens Up from the Ground. (Could you Measure It from the Ground, Wanna know if Short People could Reach the Hatch to press the Button).
- What's the Length*Breadth*Height of the Boot with seats Folded down?

Would be Really Glad If you could Answer all of them in your review.

👍 Still trying to line up a car for review (nobody has one in my area yet).
It's like the 3, because of the wheel placement, interference...
@@freundron What is???? Some Context, at least??
@@recondite_me The model Y rear window descends just like the model 3: not all the way down for the same reasons. The axle placement means the curve of the wheel well interferes with the glass in the full down position. Got it?
Is there an app like TeslaFi that is free?
How do these third party apps effect the battery drain on the Tesla
Awesome. How about a bowling game?
It there any good app for android?
What’s your code for Teslafi?
Thanks for thinking of me for that. It's "undecided"
Is there an app that allows me to close doors or windows when I accidentally open them with the key fob
In searching for TeslaFi under the Apple App Store for my iPhone-10 and my iPad Pro - neither lists TeslaFi as an App. What am I missing or doing wrong.
TeslaFi isn't available as an 'app'; it's accessed only via a browser I believe.
aw damn.. your phone wallpaper made me sad. i'm missing disney big time right now 😢
I had a trip planned for the beginning of May ... I’m really bummed.
Great vid, thanks for the helpful info. Stick with providing info on Tesla, stay away from nuclear.
ps- Molten Salt Reactor Conference at Oak Ridge is online soon, check it!
Matt, how do you like those iLoud MTM's?
LOVE those speakers. Incredible monitors ... especially if you do any kind of audio production. Really good reference speakers for a good price.
@@UndecidedMF Awesome! Yeah been hearing nothing but great things about them. I mix and master on a pair of Yamaha HS80's but was thinking of getting the iLoud MTM's for the office, something with a smaller footprint and that still sounds good laying horizontally.
Anyway, really enjoy what you do, keep it up!
yes, Tesla and other OEMs should see the vehicle as an iPhone on wheels. Build support for 3rd party apps. Even take 30% of revenue during app download. Yes, this is another revenue source.
How about remote for tesla formerly known as remote s ?
Future app platform, of course they support authentication and authorization
Great Video! What Android App adds support for Google Assistant?
Thanks! I don't have a compatible device to test, but there's one called EV Car. assistant.google.com/services/a/uid/000000196c7e079e?hl=en-US
There's also an app called Tasker, which can do some crazy automations on your Android phone. There's a Tesla Tasker plugin, so I believe there's a lot of possibilities that direction too. play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crazydog.teslatasker&hl=en_US
As always such quality content!!
Thanks so much!
There is no need for Tesla to open their authentication system to 3rd parties; they should simply allow users to generate API keys so 3rd party apps can use them to authenticate.
Ideally you would generate 1 API Key/app and this way it is very easy to remove access to a single app without impacting the other ones.
That’s the thing. They already have, but just haven’t surfaced a standard front end.
Does these apps brain the battery?
The ones I’ve mentioned don’t, but that’s not necessarily true for all Tesla third party apps. Gotta be careful there. But I haven’t noticed any increased phantom drain when using one or two of them at the same time. I have noticed increased drain when using 4 or 5 at once though ... but that’s just me ... I’m not normal. 😜 I tend to test out a lot of these (including some that are still in development).
I’m still waiting for him to review Nikola app. It’s for a better UIX than most.
👍
What is a "third party” product? There is the manufacturer that makes a product and the customer. The customer doesn’t make products. I think after market is the correct term.
Appreciate the feedback, but I’m correct in using third party. www.pcmag.com/encyclopedia/term/third-party-app
Nice video
Thanks!
Random question Can you have zoom meeting in a Tesla?
Huh ... not sure.
will stats ever be on android
Probably not. The developer is iOS only right now.
Tesla will put all these features in their native app. Will just take time.
unfortunately I can't find teslafi for android in canada.
