  • Deep in Mardin province, Turkey's Syriac minority can finally and legally reclaim ownership to critical parts of its history.
    The Turkish state is returning ownership to dozens of Assyrian monasteries, churches and cemeteries. Aadel Haleem travelled to the southeastern province of Mardin, to discover the historical significance of these sites.

    Assyria was the region located in the ancient Near East which, under the Neo-Assyrian Empire, reached from Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) through Asia Minor (modern Turkey) and down through Egypt. The empire began modestly at the city of Ashur (known as Subartu to the Sumerians), located in Mesopotamia north-east of Babylon, where merchants who traded in Anatolia became increasingly wealthy and that affluence allowed for the growth and prosperity of the city.
    According to one interpretation of passages in the biblical Book of Genesis, Ashur was founded by a man named Ashur son of Shem, son of Noah, after the Great Flood, who then went on to found the other important Assyrian cities. A more likely account is that the city was named Ashur after the deity of that name sometime in the 3rd millennium BCE; the same god's name is the origin for 'Assyria'. The biblical version of the origin of Ashur appears later in the historical record (Genesis is dated to c. 1450 BCE at the earliest, 5th century BCE latest) and seems to have been adopted by the Assyrians after they had accepted Christianity. This version, therefore, is thought to be a re-interpretation of their early history more in keeping with their newly-adopted belief system.

      The world's first civilization called Sumer was succeeded by a new state called Akkadia. The Akkads eventually became 2 new states, Assyria in the north, and Babylon in the south. The Assyrians were in conflict for centuries with the ancestors of the Armenians called the Urartians, which the Urartians was heavily influenced by them. The Assyrians actually (atleast the northern ones) have a considerably much more genetic affinity to the Armenians rather than the Arabs surprisingly. Eventually, from the east in the 6th century B.C. after numerous wars weakening each other, Urartu and Assyria weakened itself against the Medes (modern Kurds) and Scythians (Indo-Iranians, which are modern Ossetians). Media conquered Assyria and Babylon, and was succeeded by the first Persian Empire (Media didn't last long). The Persians retranslated Urartu into Armenia in their trilingual Bihustion Inscription, and had satraps (a satrapy was a government system for each territory of an ethnic group under the Persian or Greek empire) for every ethnic group to rule it's own territory which included both Armenia and Assyria. Eventually Alexander the Great conquered the Achaemenid empire and had it's own satrapys for each region. Afterwards the empire collapsed and Assyria never returned in history, and eventually Islam became the peoples of the Arabian Peninsulas (modern Saudi Arabia) religion. A new form of Arabification happened, and the indigenous peoples of once Babylon and Assyria began to consider themselves by the new term of Arab in Mesopotamia, kinda like Turkic people and Anatolians. The Assyrians you see today are survivors of an ancient identity, and when the British held on to the Middle East about a century ago, they began to label and border. Syria was created after the Assyrian race, a land for Christian minorities to be held safe, which failed because it was overrun of Muslim Arabs who continued with the label Syria. The whole Middle East is messed up with ethnic groups being where they don't belong, but hope that helps. Oh, and the reason Iraqis or Syrians are much more white than the Saudis is because of being converted, they arent pure Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula but rather have more Mesopotamian roots. The Syrian race is considered the homeland of the Phoenecians (and Jordan/Lebanon), but calling someone Syrian is like calling someone Russian (you can be a Slav, Armenians, Tatar, Uzbek, heck even black in Russia).

    • @middleeastarmenia407
      @middleeastarmenia407 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@professionalhacker2834 remember calling someone Turk or Arab is most likely an identity outside of their homelands (Mongolia/ Siberia for Turkics or Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman for Arabs), think of it this way, when people were assimilated by the Spanish they began to call themselves Hispanic (but lots of Hispanics have more Native American roots then Spanish) so Arab is an identity most of the time. I see it this way, the further you are from the Arabian Peninsula, the lesser Arab Gene's you actually carry, like someone could call themself Arab in Egypt, either because they speak the language or cultural assimilation, but they cannot logically be 100% Arab because their was the Indigenous Egyptians who were in the land before Arabs.

      @@oghuzkhan5117 your fucking dumb, search "Beheaded Armenians by Ottomans." Dumbest shit I've heard, then you guys wonder why all of a sudden the Armenian Highlands are filled by the Kurds. Historian, scholarly sources, photographic evidence are all supporting that a Genocide existed, and the Turkish government isn't speaking about it. Please for once search "Armenian Genocide," and after seeing the images, and not believing in it... your a damn joke.

    Ancient Assyrian does not exist anymore. This is Kurdish clothing. These people are Arameans. This is not the culture of the Aramean and Semitic people. These Aramaic-speaking immigrants who speak Aramaic were brought to Iraq by the British. Those villages and towns in Iraq do not belong to them. The Aram kingdom invaded Anatolia hundreds of years ago. The language of Aramaic also became the language of Christianity in the Middle East. Any Aramaic speakers, regardless of ethnicity (Turks, Kurds, Armenians, Arabs), assimilated with these people.
