      SailorDapperJr technically yes. For the most part the Christian populations of Syria and Iraq are mainly the descendants of Arameans and Assyrians (due to marrying within the same religion trait in he Middle East), while Muslim Syrians and Northern Iraqis would mostly be mixed between Assyrian, Aramean, and Arab elements (along with other elements of course). Syrians tend to have more “Aramean” elements while northern Iraqi’s tend to have a mix of both.

    Ashurbanipal is also famous for the great library he founded in Nineveh. He tried to collect all the books (clay tablets) he could. Alexander attempted to imitate him later with his great library in Alexandria, Egypt.
    Very much of what we now know of Sumer, Akkad, and Assyria comes from the clay tablets collected and preserved so well by Ashurbanipal.

      In exchange for our service to Britain in WW2 we were supposed to have been given our land back by the British. Churchill referred to us as “our smallest allies” Then, after the war, gave the Jewish people their land since they got the same deal. Which is great, but we got nothing. The Kurds committed genocide against us and took our homes.

    • @oyonan
      @oyonan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @The troll master Yes, it is true. My grandfather had to flee the hakkari mountains on foot to escape the Kurds who carried out the genocide. He ended up serving as an intelligence officer for the British and being given land in canada after being taken back to Britain at the end of the war. I could tell you stories all day about the first 15 years of my grandfather’s life back in Iraq as an Assyrian. When he died in 2004 at 104 years old there were three funerals for him, one in Canada and two in the USA.
      Most of the Assyrians in Iraq have been killed off now, and the rest are forced to live as arabs and convert just to stay alive. It’s an atrocity. I don’t know what you’re trying to refute with your condescending response, but read a book before you open up your mouth that way. I’m sure you know a lot of things, but you don’t know everything.

However, upon the rise of the Iranic powers east of Mesopotamia, the Urartian people -- as past rulers -- lost their legitimacy and eventually assimilated/interbred with the proto-Armenians to create the Armenian populace. We already had cohesion at the time of the Achaemenid ruler King Cyrus, whose romanticized stories in Xenephon's Cyropedia include an Armenian king and his son Tigranes conferring with Cyrus.

      @Matthew brother, being Assyrian is a matter of ethnicity, not religion. I am ethnically Assyrian and Phoenician (this is evidenced per my surname which means "welded" in Syriac - Suryoyo). In terms of religion, I am Muslim. I've tracked my ancestry through my family historian and found that we converted to Islam recently, technically speaking. I've also tracked my lineage through DNA tests which reported that I am only 9% Arab ~ very residual stuff. We did not magically transform into Arabs the moment we converted to Islam ; ) I maintain my Assyrian-Phoenician identity proudly and always.

    I really enjoyed the video, but I was surprised that you didn't mention the Assyrians being subject to a genocide alongside the Armenians and the Greeks under Ottoman rule. I gather that this is more of a ancient historical look at them and you mention them at the end of the video, but they are what you would call an endangered people. I also think the fact that they were able to survive genocide at the hands of the Ottomans and then their current situation in which their Homeland is ruled over by hostile ethno-religious groups who systematically oppress and I have brought them to the brink of no longer existing in their Homeland. I think the genocide should at least be mentioned beings it was the first one of the twentieth century and they were among the primary targets and victims.
