- Bethkustan, also known as Alagoz, is an Assyrian village in Mardin, an old Turkish city where diverse cultures and ethnicities meet. Over the years their numbers have dwindled, but one priest is using his calligraphy skills to keep the language alive.
Correction: Assyrians in Turkey call themselves Syriacs and speak the Syriac language. They are also connected to the Syriac Orthodox church.

Wow. This is my village. My mum and dad once were born in this village. This summer I visited it and stayed there for one week. I met this priest in this video and prayed in the church everyday. We visited another church just besides this village named mor barsomo. It is sadly abandoned, over thousands of years old. It was a pleasure to visit my home village where my parents were born. My name is Elias (Eliyo in syriac), I got named from this church. I'll be visiting again next year in summer.

This is a random statement, but this is one reason preserving these languages and concepts is so important. If people claim to believe in a Messiah entering this world, it's important to consider these things because most people may not recognize Him Imagine a flaming eyed, surrounded by flaming angels, giant speaking a similar language, booming like thunder pronouncing judgement (and blessings) upon the world. . . . .the Medieval church heavily distorted him, but I'm not hating on Orthodox.

I would argue that Assyrian nationalism is needed, or that Assyrians atleast are granted an semi-independent region in iraq which they have been asking for for a long time, which would help the Assyrians keep their culture and language alive greatly. No hate, only love to you.

Fascinating video about one of the Middle East's most ancient peoples! However, I don't think "emotional music" needs to be played over the top of it. Also, why not let him speak in just Assyrian? Especially the scene with the children in the background and he's speaking Turkish. Wouldn't this teach the children that their language is subservient to Turkish? We face the same problem in the UK, with Welsh language, and its hard to keep a language alive if the people aren't made to feel that they can use it in as many places as possibe, not just their village or town.
What do you mean? They can only use it in their villages or town because they live there. In other cities they can't speak it because there are no assyrians. There aren't many assyrians around because kurds killed most of them. They can speak it if they meet another Assyrian in a bigger city or another country.
Also Turkish is the common language in Turkey. So kids know Turkish. Obviously he needs to speak the language they all know to teach them a new language.

Those are all practically the same language.
Syriac is Aramaic, but Assyrian is something different. It's an eastern semitic language.
Assyrian is written cuneiform.
Turks just don't know. I heard many Turks calling my people Assyrian, they misunderstand the word 'Syrian', which does not derive from 'Assyrian' but from an ancient Persian king. Assyrian is a missspelling of Assur, which is the true name of those people.

Whatever we call ourselves we will go under the name ASSYRIAN (SURYOYE) and remember that we are absolutely not Aramaic nomadic tribes, because of we speak a few words of their language. The language is Syriac which is a Aramean dialect. So basically saying that the priest is talking in Assyrian is simply wrong. Assyrian comes from the Akkadian language and sounds totally different and has totally different grammar. Regardless the conflict of the Aramean or Assyrian ethnicity, the language written and spoken by the priest is Aramean-Syriac.

Why do you think it's called Syrian-Aramaic? Because it's spoken by Assyrians. We say Suryoyo in our own language, which means Syrian, which comes from Assyrian. Old Assyrian is to Akkadian like modern Assyrian is to Aramaic, they're dialects.

The word syriac/suryoyo which the priest is speaking derives from Assyrian/Asuroyo as proven by the cineköy inscription found in turkey. Syriac is a mixture of akkadian and aramaic and is in no way pure aramaic and can therefore be called Assyrian aswell.

The word syriac(suryoyo, suraya) originates from Ashuraya, Asuraya which the cineköy inscription in turkey proved and the language can therefore be called Assyrian aswell. The language is also a dialect of Aramaic(mixed with akkadian) so it could also be called aramaic.
