Hello, the Cannonball version is a 100% reliable interpretation of the original arcade rom (except of course the improvements and fixed bugs he introduced), that is, it is the game with 100% accuracy in relation to the original, for this reason no it is an emulation. This kind of work M2 studio also does.
Yeah it is the arcade version with the bugs from the arcade fixed. So you dont end up with half a column over the road if you go left for the second stage.
The Japanese Sega Saturn version is the best in my opinion. It has both the Japanese and the Overseas version of the arcade game, the original and remixed soundtracks, and a hidden 60 fps mode. It is also compatible with the Arcade Racer steering wheel or the Saturn Mad Catz wheel with pedals and a shifter. Awesome game.
Same for me. The Saturn version was one of the games I ended playing most, consistently, through the years... This port had a magical power, its charm would never wear off.
After playing the Arcade original loads the first port that I bought was for the Sega Master System. In fact it was that game that pushed me to buy an SMS before buying an NES. Years later I imported a Japanese SMS, and Out Run was one of the first games that I bought for it.
Interesting fact... the arcade game runs at 30fps instead of the usual 60 due to hardware limitations, I know at least one of these later versions beats that and runs the arcade style graphics but at 60 FPS. Not sure which
The Sega Saturn version to me was the only one that looked exactly and was true to the original arcade game. I still have my Saturn and love playing Sega Ages which includes. Outrun, Afterburner and Space Harrier and they all look just like the arcade.
@Stefano Pavone ha ha I remember asking my dad for the saturn for Xmas as the magazine I read stated both the Sega saturn and the Sony PlayStation are equal to and as good as each other, both will be around for many years to come..
Just recently purchased my 1st sega saturn and the first game I picked up was the Sega ages collection - outrun, space harrier and afterburner are all fantastic!
If I think about it, the only version of OutRun I ever had until the mid-2000s was the Sega Master System version. I remember going to downtown Montreal with my mother and siblings when I was around 14 and being able to play the arcade version one time (for just a few minutes, and I was crap at it) but, to this day, it's the only time I've played the arcade version in the arcade with arcade controls. I would've loved to have gotten the Genesis version of OutRun but I never saw it in stores. In 2006, I got the Playstation 2 "remake" of OutRun in the Sega Classics Collection (which I bought primarily for Virtua Racing) and I might have liked it more if I hadn't already bought OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast with modern gameplay, stellar graphics, and the full Ferrari license a couple of months earlier. Ignoring the lack of the Ferrari license in the OutRun "remake" (although I wish they'd have made the car at least look closer to the one in the already de-Ferrari-ed Dreamcast version), my big issue with it is that the car is a little too wide on the screen and the viewpoint is a touch too low so the car blocks more of your view of oncoming traffic compared to either classic OutRun or OutRun 2006. These days, if I want to play the original OutRun, I basically have the arcade perfect version with the unaltered Ferrari Testarossa sprite as a bonus on OutRun 2 on the XBox. Even if I want to play the Sega Master System version, I have to just play a ROM since my Master System hasn't worked in years. I might just get one of those Master System cartridge adapters for the Genesis eventually.
I had this on the C64 and the Master System but I preferred the Master System version. I found the raster bar effect going across the whole width of the screen very annoying on the C64. My memory is a little hazy but I think the C64 version came in this oversized cassette box and included a tape of the arcade soundtrack as well.
It was a brave move by the developers of the Amstrad version to just let you move left & right whilst the other vehicles vehicles drive in reverse towards you.
Interesting that you mention the amiga mirroring the car in corners. The Saturn and arcade versions (and maybe others) do this as well. If you look closely you see the horse emblem's head switch from side to side. Of course not as blatant as also shifting the people in the car ;)
Yeah the arcade does that i think its on purpose though and all the yu susuki versions do but there is no chance the Amiga version is on purpose thats just shocking

Man I'd never heard of Cannonball on PC. I just played it with steering wheel and pedals whilst on a giant screen in VR. A dream from childhood just came true 😢. If you haven't tried it like that, and you get the chance, you'll not be disappointed.
I'm so pumped to play the GBA version now after seeing your video. Just spotted it on the arcade compilation in my local game shop and am amped to play on my Analogue Pocket!
I played this on the Amiga, when I was a kid. I don't remember it playing badly or the seat swap. In fact it was my go to game after school. Whenever I get the chance, I will look out for that swap. Nice video and format!
I wasn’t expecting you to redo this video but I’m glad you did. :) I spent so many days getting to each of the different endings on 1 credit in the Yakuza-0 arcade port of the game but now am happy that I can load up the 3DS version and turn down the difficulty whenever I feel like a more relaxed experience. I didn’t know the Saturn version had a unique soundtrack - I’ll have to check that out.
@@oldstylegaming Nice. :) Part of the reason I got the Xbox version of Outrun 2 was to hear what the new arrangements were like, so I’m definitely looking forward to hearing the Saturn ones.
There is one more thing about the Sega Saturn version. You can run it in 60fps mode. Go to the "Option" menu and point your cursor to the Game Mode. Then hold down "A+B" (if running on emulator, it will depends on your joypad) and press LEFT or RIGHT either direction a few times. If done correctly, you will see a few more options like Japan(Smooth) and Overseas(Smooth). If you don't see it, your A+B button combo is wrong and try other buttons combo on your controller. I am playing the Japanese version (with better music option). The controller i am using is 8bitDo Pro 2 and my button combo is "B+RIGHT Shoulder" running on Retrobat.
The Amiga community hated the amiga version too. I was surprised to see it far up the list, because we all knew that the Amiga was capable of so much more. You can forgive some of the older 8 bit systems but the Amiga was technically capable of almost matching the arcade.
I'm surprised the C64 versions got so high up - the graphics are clunky and there are no junctions! Still, when you see the two-dimensional lorries in the DOS version and the terrible Amstrad incarnation it is at least a little more playable. The SID tunes are very good too. These days if I want an Outrun fix I go for Coast to Coast on Xbox.
I have just played it on my Sega Saturn with the steering wheel, takes a little getting used to but makes the experience much better. Sega Saturn version is incredible. I love outrun , definitely in my top 5 games of all time.
Great video, OSG. Nice idea to have the arcade version running on screen to provide a comparison. My only critique is that the Amstrad version wasn't last. 😉
Great video now I have to hear the saturn soundtrack! I love all the extras of the 3ds version especially the unlockable tuner options that change the color of your car. The switch version is more of a 3ds port, but it removes the rotating arcade cabinets like the 3ds version, but its great to have it on the switch, im sad there is no super hang on the switch.
Cool video, but objectively Cannonball is the best. it not only bug fixes some of the Arcade one's SEGA missed, it has the widescreen that the Switch version has, and a couple of never seen before camera angles, but most importantly it has 120fps without breaking the game logic, and once experienced, much the same the Saturn's 60fps made the arcade hard to go back to, 120fps makes it feel like the game it was always meant to be.
maybe mate, but nostalgia has to play a part somewhere along the lines...but yeah the Windows version of Cannonball is everything it should have been and supports force feedback
dos games advanced a lot between like 1988 and 1992. also the dos version of outrun wasn't that smooth on 8mhz. if they(or competent devs) had done it around 1992 instead for 386 it could've been almost arcade perfect music and all.
One wonderful version I found is the one in Yakuza 6 Sega videogame emulated in some of the arcade rooms present in the city. One of the best, if not the best version!
I can still remember the shock of trying the C64 version of this game. It got quickly turned off after about 5 minutes. Owning both the Saturn (sega ages) as well as the 3DS version, it's difficult to pick a favourite. But yeah, the nostalgic in me would probably also go for the Saturn version.
Love this video! I have been following you for a long time, and your first OutRun video is one of my favorite ones on YT. So this re recording is even higher on my fav list! I agree close to 100% on the order of things. I would make one small change, due to personal preference: At 3 would be the 3DS version: I love the 3D effect, and minus the car change, the 60 fps and conversion are done perfectly! the only down fall for me is due to the hardware: The analogue disc (i would not dare call this a analogue stick, as it's not high up for smooth control) feels so wrong (not only with OutRun, but with all games) that i prefer using the Dpad, making the control feel a bit twitchy, and watching a replay of me racing trough easy corners looks just silly this way. It also just feels off to me. At 2 would be the Switch conversion: Yes, i miss the 3D effect, but the Oled screen with popping colors and bigger size makes up for that. Combine this to the briliant feel of the analogue stick (on the Sega Saturn 3D pad in analogue mode, i have to arcgh the stick to mimick using a steering wheel and get smoother controll) while in the Switch (yes, also the non OLED version) conversion, you do not need to arch the stick, as it's so smooth in this game, you can just use left/right movement and still make a smooth easy corner looking and feeling like you use a steering wheel. At 1, just like you, the Sega Saturn version. Playing this game on a high end tube tv, using the 3D knights into dreams gamepad, just feels like a trip down memory lane, playing in the arcade. Add the proper Ferrari Testarossa and the remixes of the famous OutRun tunes, and a unlockable 60 fps version (In the Japanese version of OutRun on Saturn) and you have a winner! It took Sega exactly 10 years to give us a proper OutRun port for playing at home (1986 arcade - 1996 Sega Saurn) and i am STILL happy playing this conversion. Would not want to miss it, as i would even rather give back the Playstation 5, than the Sega Saturn for that reason alone 😛 Thanks for sharing this brilliant video. Thumbs up!
The main thing that put me off about the Mega Drive versions is the layout of the stages. I always like it in my Out Runs when you go left and get the stone arches, even to this day the arcades stone arches take my breath away how large and fast they fly past you. I wonder why Sega don't release their old classics on PSN or even better PSVR with virtual deluxe cabinet included. They could bring all the super scalers out. I would love a copy of Out Run on my PS5. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I was looking for a hack of the rom to put the European/USA layout in but i don't think it exists, only a colour changer hack to make it look more like the arcade. I do know on the Saturn version you can choose overseas layout which is a nice feature.
I rememberbeing 12 and getting Master System version for £20 but being really disappointed. Im curious to know what you think of Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast?
Ha ha … I had the rubbish Amstrad version 😁 … but I have to correct you, it DID have fantastic arcade quality sound … just on a separate audio tape 😣 (the Amstrad version came as a double tape)
@@oldstylegaming I was so gutted when it loaded up, the screenshots looked great and I ignored the bad reviews in magazines like Amstrad Action … I learnt an expensive lesson that day 😂
I had this on the C64 initially and got a few hours enjoyment out of it, US Gold said they weren't going to rush the ST version, they wanted to get it right and then it arrived, terrible loading times and an awful framerate, just shocking.
Saturn Out Run definitely number one but with one provision..........it does not include the poorly converted PAL release. Honestly, the Japanese version is spot on but when they optimised it for PAL the timer was messed up. It's actually harder to finish so you have to reduce the difficulty. Big borders also reduce the experience, making it feel less arcade like.
Nice video! So on the MSDOS thing. Aside from the various skills of whoever was involved in development and porting (hard to compare ANYONE to Factor 5, they're among the best of all time :D ), there was a HUGE range of hardware available both over time, and even at a given time. Outrun in your video appears to be an EGA game. EGA graphics are 16 static colors, no real hardware acceleration of any 2D functions (at least on your normal/average EGA adapter) and even an EGA setup was ridiculously expensive when it was new. A lot of people were still running monochrome PCs, or CGA (four color) machines. I was lucky enough to have EGA, but it was only really good for Sierra, Lucas, Origin type adventure games. Action games weren't great. When VGA became popular, there was a lot more competition in the hardware market, and you could eventually get good hardware for a decent price, and that is when 2D acceleration, large color palettes, etc. started happening. I'd say this was around 1990-1992 when things started getting interesting on DOS. Before that, I just stuck to my Amiga and C64. So any game that doesn't support true VGA modes, is going to be pretty horrible on DOS, unless it's an adventure or RPG game. There were a few exceptions, but that's the general rule. Commander Keen would be a good example of an action game running decently on EGA, but then that was id Software. (another greatest studio of all time) When Wolfenstein 3D hit, that was basically when the PC turned into a proper action gaming platform. Oh, side note, always check for setup.exe or config.exe etc. in the game folder on MSDOS games. Sometimes they don't support sound cards, or advanced graphics modes unless you set them up for it first. Not sure if Outrun supported Adlib, but FM sound would be far superior to PC Speaker. :D Second side note: While it's not Outrun-proper, and a bit silly as a modern racing game, my kids and I have played countless hours of Outrun 2006 on the PC. It plays a bit differently with all the drifting, but it has that same arcade speed and feel. Highly recommend it, even if it takes a little getting used to.
PC/Tandy release doesn't support FM either - but on a real Tandy (or in DOSBox) it supports Tandy-3-voice, which sounds really nice, makes the game quite enjoyable compared to the unplayable mess that is the Amiga and Atari ports.
6:50 seeing the PS2 version makes me annoyed again that OutRun 2006 Coast to Coast is still stuck in purgatory, though that's a later game of course. The PS2 3D Sega Ages 2500 remakes were really a mixed bag, we got great stuff like Phantasy Star and absolute trash like Golden Axe. C'mon Sega, give us a new Out Run already!
I love that you say the new versions "lost" the Ferrari license... 😅 We all know they never had it in the first place, hence the real issue/reason to make the changes
$h!t you owe me a new laptop !! I just spat milkshake all over my screen after watching just 32 seconds of this video. I am sorry but recording on a potato is funny enough without adding the gun to the head bit LOL
Saturn version is most definitely the definitive one. It is even superior to the arcade original as you can switch it to 60fps. The arcade ran at 30fps. The Sega Ages Vol.1 - which Out Run came included on - also had superb versions of Afterburner 2 and Space Harrier 2
@@oldstylegaming I think the Amiga version was the biggest cock up, compare it to something like Lotus 2. I've always preferred Turbo Outrun in the arcades anyway, especially the music.
I expect the DOS version is hard to play, not because the game itself is challenging, but because the challenge is trying not to burst out laughing so hard at the out-of-tune, wobbly music that your eyes water so much that you cannot properly see where you're going in-game!
Very cool video! Thank you. Belive it or not but I still play it on my A500 even though it does suck... 😄 just wanted to mention that a demo of Outrun has been released on Atari Xe/Xl and it looks and sounds really good. Hopefully they will finish it. 8 bit Atari deserves a port of this classic. Cheers!
Uh oh in the versions where ferrari logo is replaced with the other one, the logo changes directions when the car is turning. Nintendo switch for example.
Great video, I've played most of those ports although some of them only briefly.... but can't fault that order. Top work! And love it with the arcade running side by side! Out of interest, what made you place the ST version just ahead of the Amiga? Was it the music?
Nah i just think the ST plays that little bit better, and the sprite switching is unforgivable on the amiga too... i sometimes expect shit from the ST so when i play the games i dont think they are that bad for that system...but the amiga version is utter dog shit for what the system was capable of
@@oldstylegaming OH the ST doesn't do the sprite switching? Well that's interesting then, that we know that they were individually produced and not ST > Amiga ports.
I had it on the C64 and was a nice little driving game. Compare it to the arcade and doesn’t look as good and people will hate it. Away from being an arcade conversion not too bad.

see MD and PCE could have been in any order on there for me as they both have good and bad points, i just found myself crashing way more on the Megadrive, and its not cos im crap as i can complete the arcade easy

Really liked this format of comparison between console releases. Be good to see more of them
ZX Spectrum games always look like those Tiger handheld LCD games.
Great video, OSG. Nice idea to have the arcade version running on screen to provide a comparison. My only critique is that the Amstrad version wasn't last. 😉
Outrun will always be magical to the ones that played in the arcade
Great video now I have to hear the saturn soundtrack! I love all the extras of the 3ds version especially the unlockable tuner options that change the color of your car. The switch version is more of a 3ds port, but it removes the rotating arcade cabinets like the 3ds version, but its great to have it on the switch, im sad there is no super hang on the switch.
I had the master system with light gun, OutRun was my 1st game demanded! XD sooo killer! (best music ever in a game to this day)
Cool video, but objectively Cannonball is the best. it not only bug fixes some of the Arcade one's SEGA missed, it has the widescreen that the Switch version has, and a couple of never seen before camera angles, but most importantly it has 120fps without breaking the game logic, and once experienced, much the same the Saturn's 60fps made the arcade hard to go back to, 120fps makes it feel like the game it was always meant to be.
maybe mate, but nostalgia has to play a part somewhere along the lines...but yeah the Windows version of Cannonball is everything it should have been and supports force feedback
I was lured by the box' screenshots... mother of a let down, the only saving grace ? the soundtracks were on a separate tape for my CPC464
Can't argue with the number one slot! Awesome version.
dos games advanced a lot between like 1988 and 1992. also the dos version of outrun wasn't that smooth on 8mhz. if they(or competent devs) had done it around 1992 instead for 386 it could've been almost arcade perfect music and all.
Amazing job! Lot of memories... Thanks!
Great video! Now I have to try Cannonball on my Amiga ;)
One wonderful version I found is the one in Yakuza 6 Sega videogame emulated in some of the arcade rooms present in the city. One of the best, if not the best version!
I still occasionally play the Sega Arcade Gallery version on my GB Micro. The densely packed pixels look great on that tiny screen!
I have a still sealed verison of the Master System Outrun I bought years ago!
Love this video! I have been following you for a long time, and your first OutRun video is one of my favorite ones on YT. So this re recording is even higher on my fav list! I agree close to 100% on the order of things. I would make one small change, due to personal preference:
At 3 would be the 3DS version: I love the 3D effect, and minus the car change, the 60 fps and conversion are done perfectly! the only down fall for me is due to the hardware: The analogue disc (i would not dare call this a analogue stick, as it's not high up for smooth control) feels so wrong (not only with OutRun, but with all games) that i prefer using the Dpad, making the control feel a bit twitchy, and watching a replay of me racing trough easy corners looks just silly this way.
Would not want to miss it, as i would even rather give back the Playstation 5, than the Sega Saturn for that reason alone 😛
Thanks for sharing this brilliant video. Thumbs up!
10:37 The faulty parallax after the forks in the road looks totally stupid how the mountains in the distance scroll the wrong direction!
The Genesis version is the first port that i played after the arcade version and i actually quite enjoyed it
My only complaint about the music on the C64 version is that the Passing Breeze tune is missing.
Thank u for another great video. Keep up the great work.
The layout of the stages are from the Japan original
Yeah I was looking for a hack of the rom to put the European/USA layout in but i don't think it exists, only a colour changer hack to make it look more like the arcade. I do know on the Saturn version you can choose overseas layout which is a nice feature.
lol never noticed the amiga with the switching of the woman and man :) lol but then again never really played it, Lotus was the racer to play.
Nice compilation list. My fave version is ........... Outrun 2006 for Windows XP& PSP although it`s actually Outrun 2 and so perhaps doesn`t count
Really surprised to see there were worse ports than the Speccy one!
Lol that dont count, I think the speccy 48k had that audio tape too
@@oldstylegaming I was so gutted when it loaded up, the screenshots looked great and I ignored the bad reviews in magazines like Amstrad Action … I learnt an expensive lesson that day 😂
The car in the PS2 version looks more like a Lotus Elise than a Ferrari Testarossa.
i have been playing the megadrive version on retropi lately . its a really fun but like you said challenging version
I had this on the C64 initially and got a few hours enjoyment out of it, US Gold said they weren't going to rush the ST version, they wanted to get it right and then it arrived, terrible loading times and an awful framerate, just shocking.
I only played it on C64. But I really liked it. After seeing this. Cant w8 to try it out on some other platforms
Second side note: While it's not Outrun-proper, and a bit silly as a modern racing game, my kids and I have played countless hours of Outrun 2006 on the PC.
Sega Saturn and PC Engine were the best ports for me.
Thanks for your work
Thanks OSG. I thought, I'm the only one who dislike the Amiga Version. I got the game under the christmas tree back in the days 😑
Saturn version is most definitely the definitive one. It is even superior to the arcade original as you can switch it to 60fps. The arcade ran at 30fps.
The Sega Ages Vol.1 - which Out Run came included on - also had superb versions of Afterburner 2 and Space Harrier 2
The music on the ms dos sounds amazing:)
...... no answer to that
@@oldstylegaming I think the Amiga version was the biggest cock up, compare it to something like Lotus 2. I've always preferred Turbo Outrun in the arcades anyway, especially the music.
Great video, guess I need to get a Saturn
ultimate debate, musical sound shower or splash wave? for me its musical sound shower
Splash wave for me but its a close one
out run was super fun
I expect the DOS version is hard to play, not because the game itself is challenging, but because the challenge is trying not to burst out laughing so hard at the out-of-tune, wobbly music that your eyes water so much that you cannot properly see where you're going in-game!
why is the game like that on there I really dont understand ..it was capable of much better
Somehow we (almost) all ended up on what that awful platform evolved into. It still boggles my mind. How much better things could've been.
Cheers!
yeah ive seen it, it looks promising for a WIP
Uh oh in the versions where ferrari logo is replaced with the other one, the logo changes directions when the car is turning. Nintendo switch for example.
This is on purpose as if you look at the original arcade version the horse changes
Fantastic work, my dude :)
Where did you get arcade bezels that animate with the controls? Can I haz?
Its in the description mate
@@oldstylegaming Thank you sir!
I had it on the C64 and was a nice little driving game. Compare it to the arcade and doesn’t look as good and people will hate it. Away from being an arcade conversion not too bad.
Yeah thats the perfect description of it on the c64, i loved it
Yooo OSG my guy hope all's well mate. Love outrun awesome top fun retro racer
All good this end mate :-)
@@oldstylegaming nice one I'm probably gonna play outrun tomorrow now 😁♥️💪
I’ve been waiting for this video as it’s no secret that my favourite games is this stunner, Yu Suzuki Driving experience
I was in total nervous anticipation in seeing you reel out your order 😂
Waiting to disagree and wave my fist I actually found myself nodding like the Churchill Dog throughout what a magnificent comparison video bud
My only very slight niggle would be, I would have swapped the pc engine version with the Megadrive port, yes the pc engine version the colour palette is closer and better than the MD port but I feel that the Megadrive port plays better that might just be my nostalgic rose tinted glasses as I played outrun to death on the mighty Megadrive bitd
Fantastic video mate loved it 🧟♀️💙
see MD and PCE could have been in any order on there for me as they both have good and bad points, i just found myself crashing way more on the Megadrive, and its not cos im crap as i can complete the arcade easy
I had a pirated copy of Outrun for the ST. Absolute cack.
You missed the sega ages 2500 vol 13 version on the playstation. Also there is an atari STE version that someone is working on but not sure that has been released. Didnt the master system have 2 versions? One of them for the 3d glasses
That's just emulating the arcade rom, so it's not a port per se
I find the music of the Genesis version very good in fact, I disagree with you on that one!. Besides, it includes an exclusive new track for the console which is really cool!
Thank God the Saturn Version is Number 1, it is my most played version 👍🏻
The Ferrari Logo on the car still flips when you turn left or right. You would think they would have sorted that out!
SUPER HANG ON....................❤
there is an XBox first generation version hidden in out Run2
Yeah i say that in the intro
Quick question is the Sega Saturn version native code or a version of the cannonball engine as you didn't say and I no nothing about that machine?
Its original code its on the sega ages compilation
I wonder how it would may looking on Atari 8-bit machine.
Ps2 version 2006 coast to coast, was very good and true to the original. Sadly not mentioned
Because its not classed as the original outrun
@@oldstylegaming ah gotcha 🙁
That's a sequel, not a port of the arcade. You can't use sequels when comparing an original game
Good comparison. The Amiga had all the potential but they ruined it. I didn't know about that "flip trick", lame. 🤦🏻♂️
