This game ate all my quarters back in the 80s. It still one of my all time favorite arcade games. Loved Magical Sound Shower first then Passing Breeze second.
This is one of my all time favorites. I've got a stand up MAME driving cabinet that I built from a very worn out Final Lap cabinet, and I love to play Outrun on it from time to time. All the curves is not the same, there are some smaller rapid twisty turns in the dessert course for example, and some curves are longer. One thing that is a bit strange is that when you get wheel squirrel in the turns, the speed is not decreased ( as long as your wheels is kept on the road of course). I think both upright version and sit-down versions had deluxe versions, at least 4 different cabinets. There was an upright cabinet that was very small too. The deluxe version doesn't have real "Force Feedback", but they have shaking in the steering wheel when the wheels comes outside the road, and they have "movement" of the steering wheel when you crash (the steering wheel is mounted on a moving shelf within the cabinet). The game uses a normal 270 degree steering wheel with mechanical center spring I think. The Commodore 64 version was made by an 18 year old boy, his father made the graphics. The Commodore 64 version is maybe the most playable of the early ports, with real sense of speed on the costs of simpler graphics, if you compare to the other early ports. The C64 PAL version has dark hair on the girl and the registration sign is mirrored in turns, this and other imperfections was corrected in the later NTSC port that was made by the same programmer.
I've been on an Outrun 2006 binge lately so I ended up here. Man I forgot just how fast the original moves. It's kind of unbelievable how crazy high end Sega's arcade technology actually was from the mid 80's to the mid 90's.

I remember the pressure of trying to get through at least the first stage while groups of lads in the arcade used to gather around to watch. My hands get sweaty just thinking about it. The sound track to this game brings it flooding back. Good old days! :)
