    The Saturn version is a perfect arcade port. But that was much much later.

    • @eupher2
      @eupher2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Sega Version is the closest to the arcade. Sucks that version only came out in Japan, so I didn't get to play it until 2006.

      if Out Run was released on 32X in 1994 or 1995 it would’ve been the 1st perfect port before the Saturn version

      +eupher2 the Sega Saturn Out Run port didn’t only come out in Japan it was included in a collection (compilation) Sega Ages outside Japan with After Burner ll + Space Harrier late 1990’s (1997 or 1998)

      It's actually better than the arcade version cause it runs at 60fps vs the arcades 30fps. Plus dat kickass CD quality instrumental OST was a sweet bonus.

    Male driver and female passenger is sexist?! Ookay, could you tell that to my wife? For once, I may be able to have a drink when we go to a party.

    • @Resvrgam
      @Resvrgam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Not only is it not sexist, if you live in the UK (where the driver side is on the right), the woman is the driver.
      Cries of “sexism!” and “racism!” have lost all meaning these days (thanks to all the cries of wolf).

      @@franciscor390 And the comment about the world ending appeared to refer to Trump and/or Brexit as this was made in 2016. Love NN anyway. It did make me laugh as there has been such an over-reaction to Trump and Brexit. Hopefully, we will all laugh together about it in 30 years. Assuming anybody is around then ;) Maybe if NN and I are around I will follow up to this comment then :)

    Allow me a critisism on this awesome video. It's a shame you scaled the game footage breaking the aspect ratio instead of centering it with a background or just black at the sides. You also lost the opportunity of mentioning the open source Cannonball that can run the original ROM in widescreen, 60fps and other improvements.

    1:32 You found that "playable"? On Spectrum "playable" were titles like "Manic Miner" or "Jet Set Willy" etc. - but surely not such atrocious "port" of "Outrun". Maybe you meant "...having no other choice"?

    So I'm gonna assume you've never played OutRunners? You really should if you haven't already. It was never given a home release, but it's TOTALLY worth emulating on MAME. It's even better than the original Outrun in my opinion.

    my first ever sega interaction was OUTRUN in the arcades.....i was a pure nintendo boy but this game amazed me, years later, OUTRUNNERS blew me away....and i started to think that sega might be awesome, unlike nintendo, sega arcades were easyto find, so i compensated my nintendo games at home with sega games at the arcades, shinobi, golden axe and so much more....today i play these old games in 3D on my nintendo new 3ds and they still hold up...

    Thank you for this gift, you should checkout Outrun on Nintendo 3DS prob the best I've ever played, with new coloured cars that have improved handling / speed. It also has a 3D feature that looks good. Of course the sit down with pistons is very nice, I've actually played on an enclosed sit-down back in the day, this is the rarer version, I think it might be a Japanese machine?

    It really is amazing (and sad at the same time) how the 8-bit Master System port was so much better than those for the (16-bit) Atari, Amiga, and PC. The PC one doesn't look too bad, but supporting AdLib would have made it so much better.

    frankly, I'm a little disappointed you didn't even mention the 3DS version, which does include a exact replica of the original arcade version, as well as an updated version that runs at 60FPS, and included two brand new music tracks. Next time, I would suggest you do a little more research.

    great video as usual! I love showing my nephew's your videos. They are 19 and 17 years old and thoroughly convinced that an OLD game is COD Modern Warfare 2, and that each and every COD is the next greatest game of all time. I don't know why this bothers me, but it really does. I'm 34 and started my gaming life on a 2600. They are in their teens and started out with a super Nintendo, and have absolutely no respect for their roots. They don't even get nostalgic playing old SNES games. They consider those games to be nothing more than a time killer until COD arrived. I tried to explain Doom and its significance to the world of FPSs but again they don't care who invented what. They said it doesn't matter who came up with FPSs, COD would have done it eventually, and done it better. These kids have the nerve to wear shirts proclaiming things like "Uber Gamer" "Die Hard (back off filthy casuals)", and yes, they are that kind of nerds. Anyway, I got sick of trying to explain that the world doesn't revolve around COD, and just reccomended they watch some of your videos if they don't want to be called out as liars while wearing those dumb shirts. As it turns out, the older one did watch a few of your videos. He liked them and that led to a few other videos which led him to ask me about The Elder Scrolls games. After a short explanation I gave him a copy of Skyrim and what do you know? he liked it! It's his first non COD game in years and hopefully his new found curiosity will propel him and his brother out of the shit gutter that is rabid COD fanboy-ism. It's all thanks to your videos too! You sparked just enough interest to make him curious, and as far as I'm concerned, that's all it takes. Finally, now every family gathering or holiday party won't be spent playing COD. With any luck maybe, just maybe we can play something different. Anything at all... Thanks again man!

      well i'm 32 and my 5 yo nephew appreciate the classics just as much as new games.
      i hope he stays this way when he grows up because i want to play age of empires, starcraft and diablo with him and those games are a bit too difficult for a 5 year old.
      and i want to be able to play games with him without boring my self to death from holding back too. ugh i hate it.

    Just got it on Nintendo Switch......class!.......need Turbo Outrun next......used to play it in the moveable car in the Arcade back in the day....then i used to play Guerilla War, Ghost n' Goblins, Shinobi et al. On another note.....just saw Supercup Football in the vid, by Tomy, the toy Santy never brought.....ah well.....the NES a few years later more than made up for it. I opened it up a few days before Christmas unknown to my mother, who worked and saved for it.......God bless her......lucky i did.....Why?....you might be wondering....well, it was before Xmas 1990, Western Ireland.......the UK & Ireland use a 3 pin plug......so when i opened the box, and super analysed everything....low and behold, the power cable had no plug at the end of it....so i went looking around the cupboards for a spare plug, found it, then set about wiring it up ...blue wire=neutral, brown=live, green/yellow=earth.......connected the cables up,then pressed the power button.......the little red light came on.........the rush............BUT....nothing appearing on the screen, queue manual channel changing...no remote back then......then manual tuning in on UHF on a spare channel............BINGO!!!.....it slowly appeared with every twist of the knob, til finally i got the picture in perfect focus, it was the Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combi cartridge screen.........about 35 secs later......i killed my first goomba, and hit a question block to collect a power-up mushroom.........aged 41 now........i'm still in the game!

    Great video about my most favorite oldschool arcade racer. It still is my favorite racer from the good old times. I never knew the Atari ST version did not had forks in the road, as the Amiga version was based on this game, but did had the forks in the road, but it did not matter, as the game was much less fun to play than the Commodore 64 version! Graphics does not matter when a racing game feels slow and cumbersome. The MegaDrive version on the other hand did surprise me how good it was, except for the sprite design and collor, but it still resambles the game good enough, and i just loved how much better it played than on the Amiga. It was faster, more responsive, and much more fun, and the extra tune did grew on me.
    Do you have a Nintendo 3DS (or NEW 3DS)? the OutRun port from M2 is the best i've played, even better than the Japanese Saturn version. I do realize the Saturn version has the proper Testarossa in it, and the 3DS version has a close aproximation of that car, but the 3D effect, and the 60 fps frame rate combined with all those unlockable extras makes me come back to the 3DS version even more so than playing it on my Saturn (Japanese version, also with 60 fps, but you have to unlock it)
    Thanks for sharing, thumbs up!

    Amstrad CPC screenshot top left!!!! 1986 Arcade started off, eventually onto computer (with tape soundtrack included), Master System, Atari ST and then Turbo Out Run (1989) and finally OutRunners (late 1990's?).... PASSING BREEZE!!!
    BTW Sega Saturn's version is Arcade perfect and Xbox's (Original) OutRun2 had an option to play 1986 OutRun (if you knew the code NINETEEN86), along with ALL SONGS etc....

    The best racing game of the 80s and maybe the best from the arcades. Played a lot the C64, and in those days it gave me a lot of enjoyment even if was far from the arcade quality. Great video man!

    one of the first Arcade games i played. had the C64 version which wasn't bad and quite playable, with great rendition of two of the three music tracks. Another was 'Thunderblade', would love to see a retrospective on that sometime.
    I play Outrun occasionally now via the mini game available on Yakuza 0 (along with Space Harrier and a few others)

    Outrun 2 on original Xbox was where it all started.. an amazing arcade racer for the time and had an unlockable version of Outrun which was pretty much arcade perfect. Seems to be alot you didn't cover in this vid including the PC engine version (technically 8-bit!!), a very very good Sega Saturn version, a version in Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast, a 3D version on the 3D AGES on PS2, the amazing PSP version of Outrun Coast to Coast and 3DS version of Outrun!! Go check out the Game Sack coverage of this game!!!

    🤓 thx for the video, I just found out about the xbox versions, now im going to need to get an xbox heehee 😸 I remember back in the day there was one sitdown carseat that when u make tight turns the whole car would lean as well. There was also a sequal at the arcade called Turbo. I had a sega console but for some reason at the time I could not find the Outrun cartridge for sale at any store! 😒🚗🚩

    First saw it in the arcade, next to Salamander and Roadblasters. The graphics and sound of those machines were absolutely awesome next to what my 8-bit Amstrad CPC 464 could do.
    Later played the Game Gear and Game Boy Advance versions. Still like to play the Mame version every now and again on my XP machine (great for emulators).
    Still, 30 years?!? Wut? When did we get so old?

    My first experience of Outrun was a sit down cabinet in Courtown aracde in Co Wexford, Ireland around 1988. Used to go down there every single night to play it along with Sega Turbo (and later years Splatterhouse and Aliens). Think Outrun used to cost 50p a play!

    I played the DOS PC version but I had a Tandy 1000 computer which allowed for far superior sound over the standard PC speaker and the music sounded great. The Tandy 1000 sound chip is similar to what the Sega Master System had that wasn't the FM sound mode. I'm sure if you played the DOS version through a Tandy 1000 PC then you would have thought more highly of the DOS version.

    Do you have a 3DS? If you do, buy the Outrun 3D port, re-made by the masters at M2 and it's arcade perfect with extra bonuses (which you can turn off for the real experience) and it's in 3D (glorius 60fps, sprite 3D!). I recommend it!

    I guess that spectrum screen shot with the big trucks was in Your Sinclair? I definitely remember that - what a con! Riddle me this Batman, if they could make a superb, fast arcade port of the quality of Chase HQ, then why couldn't they pull-off Out Run? Regrets of my childhood...

  • @Imperious685

    Quite unsurprising that home computers/consoles of the day couldn't do this game justice. The Arcade hardware used 2x Motorola 68000@10mhz and A 4mhz Z80 likely used as a sound processor. Even so, the Lotus games were smooth and therefore this also could have been with a decently programmed port. The PC speaker sounds terrible on later PC games but does have a certain charm on the older games from the early to mid eighties, even though it's just a single tone beeper essentially.

    I had the C64 version, and even came with an audio casette, that had all 3 tracks, as the developers must of admitted the audio, may be sub par.
    On a different note, funland arcade in Southport had the huge cockpit original Outrun, for about a decade. Eventually, the mechanism for the side shifting, broke down, then the springs for the steering wheel. Quite a let down, for 30p a go!!. However, they made their money on that machine.
    Really liked the review, think I'll press that subscribe button. I might be dead in 30 years, that would make me 77.

    Out Run defined and set the standards for racing games. 30 years later I'm still impressed with the graphics and soundtrack of Out Run. I've always considered Sega being the Master of Arcades.

    I LOVED the arcade version of this game, all the local arcades had the sit down moving version of the game back then and it's the first place I'd always go as a kid. For home consoles I had the C64 version and I remember loving it - in particular how good the music was on it. As you said it didn't have branching, which was terrible, but until the Genesis version came out, it was the best out there (well assuming there wasn't an Amiga version, but if there was I never saw it).

    Battle Outrun on the Master System was great. I remember a weird problem I personally had with the game where I could only beat the second last boss if I avoided buying the best engine/tyres (I can' remember which) and bought the middling quality instead. In typing this I'm thinking that was probably a crude form of play adjustment, like pre-race rubber banding.

    Worst part about the Speccy conversion was knowing that it could have been so much better. Super Hang On, Wec Le Mans, Enduro Racer were all much better and from the same year. There was no excuse for this poor port in 1987.

    My first experience with Outrun was the full sit down cabinet in the arcade as a kid. It was quite an experience in its day that wasn't really replicated until Sega themselves made Daytona USA. There are better more accurate home ports these days but I still love the Genesis version. The GBA had a shockingly good version end the Saturn and 3DS versions are of course stellar. Also one sexism joke and everyone in the comments loses their minds, calm your tits people.

    Got a 3DS? Then get Outrun 3D from the EShop. Its as perfect a port as you could hope for, with moving cabinet emulation and an "authentic to the arcade" 30fps mode if for some reason you're tired of your eyes and wish to melt them. The 3D adds nicely to the game too.

    • @DerVerruckteFuchs

      I just love this channels videos, but that jab at the 80s and an artistic element of the game really stuck out. You may as well accuse Speed Racer of the same thing. Never mind Speed is the trained race car driver, has a family legacy behind him, and the Mach 5 has all those wacky buttons you need to identify immediately in any given situation (not having to look at the buttons to use them helps). Though that leaves out Trixie helping out with driving on longer cross country races and is pretty capable there. Granted Outrun seems sparse on background story details and it is open to some interpretation, but to assume sexism right out of the gate leaves out a lot of other possibilities. The dude could be the one who ones the car, the gal may actually prefer just riding and enjoying the scenery vs. having to focus on the road and have to tune some of the nice scenery out, some other possibilities, etc. As far as I can tell, it's just a dude that wants to take his girl on a drive, well a fairly fast paced and competitive one at that. It's just unnecessary to just shove it in like that and is a big issue - assuming it's an existent issue - to compress down to a single sentence like that. I'd want some reasoning or justification for that opinion, but it's already out of place in the video as it is. Plus accusing an entire era is a problem since you're lumping together people and events into a single soundbite and expressing your judgement of them.
      If we were talking about those racing arcade games with bikini clad girls waving checkered flags, it would have been more plausible. However, a lot of them were 90s games (some of the newer ones may have the bikini girls as well), so decades/eras seem to have little to do with how sexist something can (perceivably) be.
      The rest of the video was pretty solid though.

      @PoisonousPen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      That struck me as weird as well :/ Why is it sexist that you play as a guy driving his girlfriend around?
      Let me guess, it would've been better for two non-binary, robot, plutonic friends to be aided to the finish line by an automatic car that no one has direct control over, and the first place prize is the key to your own safe space?
