Most bosses in the game have some sort of cheating involved, which makes them feel unfair sometimes. Here’s all of the examples: - Metal Gear Ray is the tutorial boss, but even it comes back once after you should’ve beat it. It isn’t really cheating, but it does feel like it’s trying to. - LQ-84i sends in backup at some points - the first Hammerhead has strange geometry around the battlefield that is hard to scale, which makes it hard to get the chance to attack - Mistral has the tripods, and some of her attacks are unfair, like when you’re behind her and she re-equips her tripods, which comes out faster than usual and has 2 tripods at once - the first GRAD has many explosive barrels strewn about, and in Very Hard and Revengeance, there’s 2 of them - Monsoon can become completely immune to almost all attacks and often jumps up where you can’t hit him - Sundowner has shields, helicopters, and cyborgs that he calls in his second phase - Metal Gear Excelsus is too big to be fun, summons Gekkos, and has an attack where you can’t hurt him but he can hurt you (which is his laser attack) - Armstrong can get free hits that aren’t fair and aren’t avoidable, and if he has his back to a wall while he heals, there’s nothing you can do until he’s done Okay, every boss has some sort of way that they cheat. Let’s see Sam now… - uhhh… his unarmed phase takes a bit to long??? Sam has no major way that he cheats, and every minor way is completely subjective. If everybody in the game fought eachother at once without cheats, Sam would win damn near instantly.
I just realized that Raiden "becomes" Sam in the final fight between him and Armstrong. Holds the sword the same way, says "lets dance" to start the fight, uses Sam's sword, and uses his weapon for killing not for justice.
I love how in this video he isnt just completely dodging all the hits, it shows that not everyone can perfect everything, that and it makes it feel like an actual fight
Sam’s death symbolizes more than initially thought. It symbolizes the player getting strong enough and skilled enough to match him on an equal footing. It means the death of an entire bloodline and it’s history. And it means the death of the samurai ideology as a whole. Sam was the last samurai after Millar died. In his final moments he was the one thing he hated, a dishonorable man who helped a morally wrong organization, and surrendered to Armstrong after the two fought, not comiting suicide as is tradition for samurai.
The way I see it, Sam was a Ronin before joining up with Armstrong. Samurai have always adhered to the superior power, and their loyalty to that higher power is meant to be absolute. While Sam was forced into joining, and wanted to bring down Armstrong just as much as Raiden did, he couldn’t simply just betray Armstrong for Raiden’s cause. It’s as he said: “History will decide who’s right. End of story.” If there’s one thing that defined true Samurai, it was loyalty. Sam was loyal to Desperado even after everything he went through under them.
It should also be noted that Sam is full of cowboy motifs, too. Not only is his death the death of the samurai, but also the death of the cowboy, two ends of an era basically finishing the same.
I wonder how that relates to the game's ending. If Raiden carries on Armstrong's legacy and creates a world where people would "fight their own wars" it would create more people like Sam
@@seamusthatsthedog4819 Which is also what Sam would've wanted for all the people he fought: Fight for what they believe in, fight for themselves, not for a nation or someone superior than them. It seems like these ideologies were just keep on looping to other people.
The dichotomy that a Samurai/Cowboy was the most symbolic opponent for a Ninja/Hollywood Action Hero. There’s an obvious reality to the samurai but the cowboy has its own movie myth. The ninja has historical myth whereas the 80’s action hero is grounded in (debatably) realistic fiction

This scene is more significant in the Japanese version cause all the cyborgs have white blood when you kill them like bishop from Aliens but when you kill sam his blood is red further symbolising how human he was

It's an unspoken law that you must do this boss fight with only the standard sword, no secondary weapons, no utility weapons, and no support/healing items whatsoever. To do otherwise dishonors the entire fight!
I know it's been 7 years since this was published.. But in case you don't know, if you avoid fighting for quite a while, just blocking and evading, Sam will taunt by saying: "How did you beat Sundowner like that?" Makes you wonder, cause Sam recognizes Sundowner's strength

@kelvinyeo9165 No, the music will just abruptly cut to the end regardless of what point the song is at. It's just that here the player managed to sync the end of the music with the end of the boss fight.
"I don't really care who thinks I'm right, and I've got cause enough for killing you." "Good! That's very good! I like that!" Sam is impressed here because of how different Raiden is from when they first met. Raiden was essentially just a hired mercenary, doing what other people asked him to do because he didn't know what he wanted himself. Sam didn't win that first fight because he was physically stronger, Sam won because he was ideologically stronger, and thus could fight with more confidence and proficiency than Raiden, who was fighting for the shaky idea of 'Justice' he had at the time. At this point in the game, especially after the Monsoon fight and adopting the Ripper persona again, Raiden has begun adopting his own ideals and thus can fight with more proficiency. Sam knew he was going to lose the moment Raiden said this, meaning he likely knew he would beat Armstrong as well. This is why Wolf can't decipher his intentions because despite literally fighting FOR Armstrong, he's actually setting Raiden up to be able to defeat him. This game is prime meme material and filled to the brim with stupid jokes, one-liners, and cheezy dialogue. But it actually has a pretty great story and morals to it once you look deeper into it.
Platinum knew the Metal Gear franchise and they knew its hallmarks. MGR: R's story is essentially a distillation of a standard Metal Gear Solid game. It accentuates both the absurd and deep elements of Metal Gear in one stroke.
@@beansboggy6337 Yes, because of all the things out there, Sam was Blade Wolf's first best friend and the very first person to ever give him an ability to reason and think logically for itself, without being programmed. I think they said something in the game that both Sam and Blade Wolf has been fighting side by side ever since Sam joined the Desperados, they must've a strong bond that's why we don't see Blade Wolf being hostile towards Sam even after being programmed by Doktor to be Raiden's ally, and also Blade Wolf was doing everything he can to reason with both Raiden and Sam to stop fighting.
At 7:29, I love how the song goes "Looking downward from this deadly height..." as Sam is critically wounded and attempts a final attack. Beautiful timing.
@@leonel392 The "canon" fight would've been much likely both Raiden and Sam parrying and dodging each other's attacks rather than actually hitting each other, like a fight between two equal samurai-like warriors, leading up to the end where Raiden manages to finally find an opening and finish Sam off. Remember too that Raiden had a full cyborg body while the only technology Sam really had were his exosuit and his cyborg arm which (according to his own words) was more detrimental than beneficial, so the fact that Raiden managed to win was due to both him having a complete cyborg body and Sam having lost his sword arm, you can only imagine how Sam would've performed with an enhanced cyborg body like Raiden's.
"He barely had any cyborg enhancements" What a madlad. Basically surpassing most other villains despite not using the most powerful tool they all have access to
Sam actually dons a powered suit / exoskeleton suit that is boosting his strength and speed to superhuman level on par with Cyborgs like Raiden, however, enhanced power alone isn't why Sam's so powerful It's Sam's impressive skills in both wielding the sword and his hand-to-hand combat, being the epitomy of an entire Generation of Samurai swordsman
Fun fact: the motorcycle Raiden was using is actually Sam's, at the beginning of his DLC he arrives using that exact motorcycle (or at least an identical one)
Still the best playthrough of this boss battles to date: >Music is on point no matter what >barely flubs any of his attacks >always compliments Sam's moveset with his own >demonstrates a good degree of skills, but not too much to seem too overpowered >actually takes damage, makes the fight more engaging >somehow makes it feel as if this is how the fight would actually go down You did a good job, LegendaryPeelz. If I could marry this video, I would.
One little detail I like that really sells how Sam is just a _really_ skilled normal human: he's got REALLY low health - only 100%, and he loses a lot of it per hit unlike, say, Monsoon - but the fight still takes a while to win just down to how aggressive he is, keeping you on the defensive for most of it.
In the Japanese release, normal cyborgs and the three bosses you fight all bleed white blood, which IRL is due to censorship reasons but ingame is explained as them having artificial blood in their bodies. Sam is the only boss that bleeds red blood like Raiden, because the only artificial part of his body was his arm.
The best part is, at this point, Sam is still mostly human, save for his right arm - A right arm that he had to get replaced after his fight with Armstrong. He's basically been a dude in a power suit the entire game.
I mean, yeah. Either way Raiden and Sam were around the same level. They both had similar strength. It's only how they dealt with damage that's any different. Raiden's cyborg body let's him tank hits. Sam's sword skills let him avoid the stuff Raiden would just tank.
After playing MGR, I can say for sure that Sam's boss fight was the boss fight I loved the most. He had no minions to cover up for him, no shields to help him block Raiden's sword and no ranged attacks to shoot from afar. He was the most respectful and loveable character. To top it off, he barely had any cybernetic enhancements making him more scarier that the fact he was that strong as a human. This fight was a perfect duel of 2 swordsmen in the sunset with an amazing ost. Everything about him is just perfect.
I like how Wolfie says that He is unable to acertain Sam's motivations, underlining the fact that he has none, and spites himself for havnig no reason for him fighting other than the fact its the only thing he can do.

@@bruhman5829 it’s a reference to the “mountain” one has to climb to achieve success. In pursuit of something like that, as you “climb” you have to give up things, and they are different for every individual. Some give up their free time, some give up their ideals, some give up their families. However, once you reach the “summit” (if you even reach it) and you look back on your journey and the things you gave up, you realize you are not you anymore. The person who reached the summit is not the same one who had the dream of reaching it. If that wasn’t cruel enough, sometimes you give up so much that you even give up the dream itself so that you can achieve it. If you listen to the lyrics, it talks about how Sam doesn’t even know who he is anymore. The song is all about Samuel.

It's a murasama, based on the real life muramasa. It's a "demon" sword forged for evil and has a bad history. As mentioned, Sam inherited it from his father, then upgraded it.
Every bit of this fight is masterful. My favorite is when you knock Sam's sword away and he says "show me a good time Jack!" That line alone is Sam slightly acknowledging Jack's skill, but also demanding more of him, as if to say "you've disarmed me huh? Good job! Now take advantage of it!!". Almost like Sam is teaching Jack how to fight for real.
I LOVED this fight for multiple reasons. This one was extra special for me because For one thing, it feels like a match of equals. No cheap tactics are being used, no silly gimmicks or reliance on mooks. This duel feels completely fair. This is not a duel between good and evil but just a clash of ideals and beliefs with two men putting their lives on the line to see whose path is the right one. It's especially good when you know Sam's whole story and one way of interpreting this fight was that Sam is testing Raiden, to see if he has the strength and conviction necessary to do what Sam could not do, even leaving behind his sword for Raiden. This is just me but I notice during the duel whenever you get Dazed status, Sam DOESN'T attack you but gives you the chance to get your bearings before going at it again. A truly honourable individual to the very end, and one I am proud to admit I fought using ONLY Raiden's primary sword. A great fight and I really hope Sam comes back for Metal Gear Rising 2.
He is since all he really cared about was fighting. I hope he comes back in the sequel. It would be cool to see him and Raiden team up against Armstrong.

‘Anyone looking for work should consider the fighters guild. I hear they’re always looking for new recruits.’ ‘Raiden, you ran over a child 9 miles back! What are you going to do?!’
What I love about this bossfight is the respect they both have for each other. Unlike other bosses, Raiden didn't slice Sam into a million pieces, and he even took Sam's sword (which also helped Raiden defeat Armstrong). It wasn't a fight of "you're a bad guy so I will kill you", it was a duel for ideals. Unlike other bossfights, Sam didn't use any minions, or other items to help him. It was just a duel between two skilled swordsmen, that's it.
Wouldn't be too farfetched to say that Sam put a tracker on his bike. He probably realised there was a launch site nearby as well, and could've killed everyone.

This really felt like a duel between two swordsmen ready to kill the other or die trying
There’s no helicopters
No backup
No tripods
Just you and him.
Most bosses in the game have some sort of cheating involved, which makes them feel unfair sometimes. Here’s all of the examples:
- Metal Gear Ray is the tutorial boss, but even it comes back once after you should’ve beat it. It isn’t really cheating, but it does feel like it’s trying to.
- LQ-84i sends in backup at some points
- the first Hammerhead has strange geometry around the battlefield that is hard to scale, which makes it hard to get the chance to attack
- Mistral has the tripods, and some of her attacks are unfair, like when you’re behind her and she re-equips her tripods, which comes out faster than usual and has 2 tripods at once
- the first GRAD has many explosive barrels strewn about, and in Very Hard and Revengeance, there’s 2 of them
- Monsoon can become completely immune to almost all attacks and often jumps up where you can’t hit him
- Sundowner has shields, helicopters, and cyborgs that he calls in his second phase
- Metal Gear Excelsus is too big to be fun, summons Gekkos, and has an attack where you can’t hurt him but he can hurt you (which is his laser attack)
- Armstrong can get free hits that aren’t fair and aren’t avoidable, and if he has his back to a wall while he heals, there’s nothing you can do until he’s done
Okay, every boss has some sort of way that they cheat. Let’s see Sam now…
- uhhh… his unarmed phase takes a bit to long???
Sam has no major way that he cheats, and every minor way is completely subjective. If everybody in the game fought eachother at once without cheats, Sam would win damn near instantly.
And the soil

"I don't really care who thinks I'm right, and I've got cause enough for killing you."

Sam is impressed here because of how different Raiden is from when they first met.

Don't care what it means, it sounds cool.
Whats interesting about this fight and really fun is that the boss practically does same things you do.
He dodges, does a parry, even does a multi swing like you would.
Oh yeah, music is awesome too.
thats the best part about sam in this game, he isn't in a giant mech doesnt have tons of robots swarming around you. Hes just like you, just a dude with a katana going up against building sized robots and the greatest cyborgs on earth
@@anarking5764 Yep true tho! But what made Raiden and Sam different is that one had full cyborg enhancement.
While the other one is in a powersuit with lots of experience and very well trained with his style of fighting.
Sam uses more slower charge attacks and dodges more while Raiden uses faster combo attacks and block/parry more.
@@ttchme9816 because sam is using an old generation exoskeleton suit to match with raiden, if not he would have died within a few stabs
Character action is undisputed in rival design
I like Raiden's smirk at 2:19 It's almost like he is relieved that the talking is over and violence is about to commence, something he understands.
6:24
That was the most cinematic I’ve seen a video game be. Goddamn.
I like how Sam doesn’t have a phase 2 when his health drops to a certain percentage. It kind of implies that he’s going all out on you
his " phase 2" is the section of the fight after he gets his sword back from that point onward he start doing his dashing Draws and becomes impossible ot air combo as he just catchres you and throws you back down.
Also the implication that he was going all out is that the lyrics start at the very beginning of the fight, instead of kicking in when hitting a certain percentage, and hell, it even flips the idea on its head. His theme cuts out when he loses his sword and it reappears when he gets his sword back.
When I played this, I went through almost the whole game without blocking or countering.
It wasn't because I was trying to be a badass, it was because I didn't know how to block or counter up until I got to the end of the game.
You could block?
How did you fucking beat sundowner
How he fuck did you get past monsoon without parrying?
This guy accidentally became an absolute chad without him knowing.
Like.....How in the fuck do you beat sundowner and monsoon without blocking?
Only chads can do that
Same 🤣
7:26 that ending went so well with the music
Am I right?!
I think the game is programmed to do this, similar to how Red Sun hits the chorus as soon as you hit Sundowners second phase
@@BreMeows no, he means sync. At this scene music goes instanly to end without any question. This have in all bosses, but fuck grad and hammerhead
@@BreMeows Well usually the game just jumps to the end immediately, but when he did the qte it's already in the end of the song. So it perfectly blend in with the cut
3:00 I just like how this scene gives a small vibe of old Western movies with cowboy duels.
Except you have guns replaced with old fashion JAPANESE SWORDS
4:47 Holy hell that was hilarious. Raiden: "I'll stab him! He's wide open!"

This is one of the saddest villain deaths in the series.......
What about vamp?
John Perry that's why I said "one" of the saddest deaths.
oh right. Honestly the only reason why I found this sad was because of wolf
John Perry what about the story behind Sam's sword?
It's a murasama, based on the real life muramasa. It's a "demon" sword forged for evil and has a bad history. As mentioned, Sam inherited it from his father, then upgraded it.
Every bit of this fight is masterful. My favorite is when you knock Sam's sword away and he says "show me a good time Jack!"
That line alone is Sam slightly acknowledging Jack's skill, but also demanding more of him, as if to say "you've disarmed me huh? Good job! Now take advantage of it!!".
Almost like Sam is teaching Jack how to fight for real.
Your statement makes sense too. Because Sam also said "That's the spirit Jack!"
As a brazilian i can confirm that sam is really lore accurate 👍
True
This is just an average Brazilian male.
It's much more than that
He is a average Brazilian *Chad*
@CGS maybe
6:35 I love this little exchange. Raiden does a blade mode combo on Sam and Sam returns the favor by blade moding him as soon as he hit the ground.
James White Yeah except that only raiden has the ability to restart when he dies
