In Sam's DLC, he has an attack where after doing a quick draw, he blows smoke off of his sword sheath, akin to someone blowing off a gun barrel after firing.

Another neat fact is that Raiden's mask is the opposite of Sam's: Raiden's hides his eyes and shows his mouth, Sam hides his mouth but shows his eyes.

    • @ellieprion7488
      @ellieprion7488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +773

That's gotta have some kind of symbolism deep in there but I have no idea what it is besides Sam's mask resembling that of an outlaw's, hiding his identity

    • @Marxsychosis
      @Marxsychosis 4 ปีที่แล้ว +927

I have no real clue what could this symbolize at all, but I could give a theory on what I personally think it symbolizes.
Sam hides his mouth, because like the video stated, Sam is trying to mask his identity like those cowboys, but I don't believe that's what it's truly trying to say, because there's no point in hiding your identity behind a mask when everyone knows who you are. What I think this really symbolizes is that Sam hides behind a mask because he doesn't want to listen to whatever tells him he's going down the wrong path because he's already made his choice. There is nothing that can stop Sam from going against World Marshel due to him losing a part of himself. He doesn't want to argue with anyone about ideals, but he is watching and observing to possibly see how his actions speak louder than his words.
Raiden, on the other hand, masks his face because he doesn't want to change his ideals at all, being stoneheaded into them, refusing to accept anything that someone tells him, unlike Sam. Sam is watching and observing, wanting to change his ideals because he sees a future where Raiden will uphold his legacy, whereas Raiden doesn't like to change it at all, because he's already convinced himself he's going down the right path.
Think about it. When Armstrong destroyed the thing that covers Raiden's eyes, Raiden was observing and watching, even deciding to listen to Armstrong's speech about what he believes. When masked behind the thing covering his eyes, he believes Senator Armstrong is just another corrupt politician, which explains the theme "Collective Consciousness", because Raiden is telling himself this is what Armstrong is. When Armstrong gets rid of it, the final boss theme is almost like an apology between the two, understanding each other's ideals despite the fact that one of them has to die to continue on down the path of what they believe is right. However, that's only if you assume it applies for both of them. Most likely, it applies for Raiden, because Raiden is the one that this song is suppose to represent. Raiden, no longer masked, sees Armstrong's ideals, but regrettably has to kill him instead of believing in his own ideals, and Raiden changes his ideal of his sword only being a means of justice, because he gets Sam's blade. He no longer wishes to fight for justice but rather anger and vengeance.
At the end of the game, you can notice Raiden possibly believing a bit in Armstrong's philosophy, saying people fight for causes they don't believe in. He even changes his appearence, now having a suit and tie just like Armstrong. Raiden used his mask to mask his ideals and wouldn't allow himself to be convinced to the ideals of others, unlike Sam. Sam knew what he was doing was wrong but couldn't stop himself from fighting because he lost himself already, but he knew Raiden was going down the right path in his opinion.
That's what I believe at least.

I think his kick is actually the only attack in the game without a red or yellow warning flash. It really gives an impression that he is unpredictable and aimless without his weapon, although still very well trained and deadly.

Increasing his supply of oxygen probably comes with a LOT of bonuses. Moving at speeds capable of keeping up with someone like Raiden would make breathing difficult, and artificially regulating his oxygen intake would also keep him awake and maximize his stamina longer in combat, and since he's mostly organic, his body probably tires out quicker from moving around in a suit that makes his muscles move exponentially faster. Let's also not rule out how difficult it would be to breathe at all with an unguarded face on top of a train.

I once heard someone say in one point in history that gunslingers or duelists, samurai, Pirates, and Knights all existed to some capacity at the same time. He then went on to say that you could produce a story that has a group with a gunslinger, failed samurai, failed Knight, and a shippless pirate and it would still be historically accurate. Has nothing to do with the video but if anyone can elaborate and tell me more details on this I'd really appreciate it, alot.

The last samurai to ever exist died in 1877. knights were still a thing until some time in the 1700s when guns became too strong for conventional armor to help, but armor in general was still used until some time in the 1800s, and swords were still a thing until the world wars. The wild west was from 1865 to 1895 (1865 was when the first real revolver was created, but gunslingers of the sort definitely could've existed before then, the first revolver was in 1835 and way before that single shots were a thing), the golden age of piracy was from the 1650s to the 1730s, but pirates still exist even today in places such as Somali, boats and all.
So very early 1800s could have a samurai, a knight who refuses to accept plate armor isn't effective anymore or transitioning into the lighter variants that are more common for the time, a pirate is just some robber dude with boat experience, a flintlock and a sword, and a gun expert that is flying through rifle shots or flintlocks with as much speed as possible. It's not a perfect mesh, but it seems very much possible if you're wanting a pseudo-realistic DnD type thing. Just be prepared for the knight to die quickly if a rifle is pointed at him.

I have to disagree with you there. When you call Doktor, he says straight up that technology wouldn't be the deciding factor in the duel. Obviously you can't take that at face value, but you gotta remember that just cause Sam's not fully augmented, doesn't make his tech a slouch compared to Raiden's. Sam was clearly able to catch and momentarily stop a downward cleave from Raiden with his bare hands, he's able to block multiple hits from a fully enhanced Raiden with one hand on his sword before losing his balance, his armor could tank hooks from Armstrong, and the exosuit provides enough strength behind his HF blade and attacks to cut a Metal Gear RAY clean in half. Raiden won fair and square, and only lost the first time because even Sam knew he wasn't at the top of his game.

1 , the game being somewhat short , true , most campaign games are short , but at least some give you freedom to make a whole level or play someone's level , like in DOOM 2016
2 , the game not having a sequel despite being out for 7 years , and it also sequel baits at the end of the game , that's infuriating
3 , the fact that it's the only game that lets you freely cut enemies , although this is more of a hate on the industry rather then the game itself , come on gaming companies , 7 years and we still didn't get anything like it

@@djordjepopovic7568 (Apologies if this gets a little long.)
The second point you raised is no fault of the game itself, but of Konami as the publisher that owns the Metal Gear IP doing nothing with Revengeance despite its unexpected success. Third point I'll give you because despite the Fox Engine that Konami has ownership of showing some real promise in Revengeance and MGS5, nothing meaningful has been done with it. It's wasted potential. I can kind of get how some people would vent that particular frustration on the game, even if it is unreasonable, and ultimately it ties into the second point since Konami is involved.
First point has more to do with the nature of the developer, Platinum Games, and their design philosophy with what they develop. A lot of the staff who worked on Revengeance were some of the same people who worked on the first three Devil May Cry games, and those games have a similar structure in their narrative, how missions/acts are staged, and the length of the game. A big part of the replayability of their games (including Bayonetta 1&2, Transformers: Devastation, and more recently Astral Chain) is that their main stories are compact and tight, meant to work with an entertaining narrative that has some complexity, but never leaning too far into a narrative experience. Standard playtime for these kinds of games is between four to ten hours, depending on if you're exploring/having difficulty/speedrunning/farming to upgrade skills/finding collectibles. Story and gameplay have to work together, because these are video *games*, not interactive movies. This allows players who enjoyed the gameplay to repeat the game on higher difficulties to test and refine their skills, which is given direct feedback through the scoring system. So those who get mad or dislike Revengeance for the first point you raised kind of miss the whole point of character action games, and that Revengeance is about enjoying the ride that is the story AND gameplay.
As for me, I don't really hang around circles that openly dislike or hate Revengeance. I know one person online who really dislikes the game, but that's more due to specific characters causing her an intense emotional reaction from the philosophies they espouse, and it really angers and freaks her out that they'd say such things.

I believe the choice of Brazil for being Sam's homeland was on point. He is the fusion of the conceptions of the Samurai from the east, and Cowboys from the West. Brazil has huge japanese and italian communities since the earliest years of the 1900s, creating a pretty interesting culture combination. Sam's also very outgoing and charismatic, a big steriotype amongst brazilians, as this cultural fusion agregates to the people and make them more united, which leads to this typical friendly and charming behavior.

Actually I think a better idea on how that could work is Raiden going insane and he hears and sees Sam telling him to be better than this, better than him and it starts a boss fight from *Sam's* perspective with the same moveset as Raiden currently as you face against Jack the Ripper. This Sam is of course a delusion that Raiden sees in his madness but the fight will still be real.
If I could write a song for the fight I'd make it a reprise of "The only thing I know is real", but with a few hints of other MGR themes and a different set of lyrics.
I guess example lyrics of it would be...
_My spirit was broken, My body was smoking, all I had left was only my name!_
_But now I see through my act of treason, was worth that whole reason that I left you my family's blade!_
_Your path has been broken, your end is uncertain, but it doesn't have to be this way you now feel!_
_You claim to know nothing but blood-shed, but I'll continue to shake my head._
_You were the one, left, who continued my fight when I once had ran from death._
_Because I know you have fought against your original fate. Oh, yeah!_
_You claim to know nothing but blood-shed, but I won't run again like I once let my past self done._
_Take back your identity, to know why we are the same._
_To find the truth in front of me, I must fight against the storming rage._
_Looking upwards to see the bright light! And finally remembering the reason I fight!_

it's a nice detail how the lyrics for "the only thing i know for real" relate to raiden's initial struggle with identity crisis, and knowing nothing but violence since he was a child.
most of the boss fight themes comunicate the perspective of the boss in question, which contrast with raiden's personal experience.
also, sam himself said that "the war was the big pay off", meaning that he eventually learned of armstrong's plans to use the war economy to destroy it, and create a world of anarchy where everyone gets to choose their own fights, instead of being told what to fight for.
that was something he seemed to be looking forward to, but turning into another soldier fighting for someone else's ideals, and raiden taking down world marshall by himself, despite all the gaslighting done to stop him from playing the hero like sam once did, seem to have made him reevaluate it all..
anyway this video is amazing, great job.

One could even see Sam proceeding with the fight against Raiden anyways despite not being certain of his own beliefs as a means of carrying out the philosophy of seppuku. He became the thing he set out destroy, and even if there was a chance that the ends would justify the means, he was still willingly playing accomplice to World Marshall's atrocities. By fighting Raiden and setting a timer on the Murasama's lock in case he lost, he genuinely left it up to fate and atoned for his crimes.

funny how the calamity mod of terraria has a sword that looks exactly the same and has the same name, which is "murasama" and actually is the most powerful sword in that mod. It can be obtained by killing a very hard boss, there is also an alternative to get it and that is by naming your character "Jetstream Sam" or "Samuel Rodrigues".

Every bit of this fight is masterful. My favorite is when you knock Sam's sword away and he says "show me a good time Jack!"
That line alone is Sam slightly acknowledging Jack's skill, but also demanding more of him, as if to say "you've disarmed me huh? Good job! Now take advantage of it!!".
Almost like Sam is teaching Jack how to fight for real.

I think the sword's name might itself be a double edged sword, being both his family's most prized possession and still misinterpreted in origin. It might represent how Sam's origin and resulting culture and ethics are a mix of different cultures and he may not be the same as anything before him, but damn is he strong.

What a miracle a Brazilian character, who is not green and shoots lightning, or a secondary character who barely appears and has no prominence. Because most Americans and other gringos think that all Brazilians are Tarzans who are jumping from tree to tree and Negroes. Or there is only Amazon, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. PS: Kojima has a legion of fans here in Brazil. And when we found out that Sam is Brazilian, we were all proud and started to admire Kojima even more.

As a Brazilian, I honestly really like Sam. I guess it's because I got used by my country only being represented in fighting games, where the character's nationality is pretty much the whole point of them either by having our signature martial art Capoeira or by being... well, whatever the hell Blanka is. Sam is Brazilian but you definitely couldn't tell that without at least knowing his full name, his aesthetics are clearly much more Japanese-inspired, which still really fits since Brazil has quite a large Japanese community that has always been there, we're kinda defined by our cultural diversity so it's really cool to have a freaking Brazilian Samurai Cyborg representing all that. Plus it definitely helps that he's probably the most charismatic character in this whole game.

Fuck yes my dude. I've never been happier to be a subscriber.
I've always had a fascination with Japanese Culture. I was once forced to work a few times a month for some scary people years ago because I had sticky fingers, but they were good to me. I learned some Japanese and they taught me more about myself than I knew.
I miss them, they're all dead now and this video means the world to me. Sam was always one of my fav characters from MGS, I know it's a spin off but a freaking amazing one. I've been trying to learn how to use a blade again, it's been years, I've been practicing with a staff before I buy a new blade.
Sam was one badass son of a gun, he did so much kick-ass stuff in his life. I wish I was half the man he was, hell I lost my way and wandered away from my honor and ideals. I've been trying to redeem myself since I left rehab and just now found the strength through Yeshua to help others. I've been uploading videos to help others. I don't care if people don't believe me, my truth is my truth. I hope I die an honorable death like Sam one day. But this untreatable cancer will probably take me out.
Thank you again for this video and the peace it gave me tonight. Woke up at 3 pm and found out a woman I loved died, that got me caught up with the Japanese. She fell to liquor and pain pills. So this calmed me and reminded me of the man I once once.

Another thing to note is that Sam's mask harkens back to the "mempo," a form of armored face mask worn by samurai during the Feudal Era. They were often designed to look like demons, in the hopes it would frighten the wearer's enemies.

Looking for Sam's cutscenes to give myself some motivation and ended up here. Great vid! Definitely increased my appreciation on the writing in this game. I did get the part you mentioned at the end, about Sam seeing a part of him in Jack. But the lyrics and all, I didn't interpreted them as literal as you pointed out. Your take still makes sense though.
To me, he never really lost and left his behind entirely, but only let it stay dormant. Since he lost to Senator, he admitted he wasn't strong enough to make the change and reluctantly accepts World Marshal's ideal as Just. He 'taints his hand' in order to see this through, and meeting Raiden ignites the hope in him again so 'he takes his hand'. Man, the hand motif is really useful and clever. During their final fight, he said 'history will decide who's right". The playback in his sword he says "May the best man win", believing the stronger ideal always wins, just like how the Senator won him over. Rules of Nature baby. So he went all out on Jack and like you said, Raiden finally proved himself.
Though I'd like to inquire the source of that interview at 2:56? Looks like an artbook, and artbook I dig. Will be checking your catalogue of vids. Good luck !

I actually think Sam's blade represents his doubt, he records on it his doubts and on a very basic level whenever he carries the blade the lyrics tell of his self doubt and hatred for what he is becoming. He then gives this burden to Raiden who proves the doubt wrong and shows that Sam could have overcome the challenges in front of him.
