Building a Stock Motor 650WHP Subaru WRX STI in 48 Hours.

- Had to knock out some Customer cars this week and this 2012 WRX STI was a fun one to do. The car originally came in to get a 400WHP Package and ended up going with an ETS Rotated kit and sending a stock motor to the moon! The goal shifted to around 600WHP, and with doing this literally last minute it was a challenge to make everything work. But we going to get this thing making some jam!
Please keep in mind there is obviously risk involved with doing this on a stock motor. You NEVER know how long they will last. One bad day and BAM could take out the engine.

It’s nice to see that you make the engine bay look clean as if it was your own. Instead of having hoses everywhere. I’ve seen shops put everything together and just leave it messy
I try to keep em as clean as possible. Treat every car like it were my own 👌

😂 gimmie 24 hours next time. 😂
I'd let him build mine like this 😂
😂😂😂
Dam lol
Totally agree. No stock motor Subaru will hold that power for extended time. Why waste time building so much power for it to detonate.
An hour to pull out an engine is crazy work 😭😭😭
Practice makes perfect 😭
Actually not that bad to pull a motor. After you pull 10 or so, its super easy.
How many miles were put on this motor before the tune ? 3? Lol
They talk to smeedia and end up with an extra 200hp 😂😂😂
It’s unintentionally 😂

Watching you work on cars is my therapy. Almost tempted to bring you my stock AF 2015 STI with thousands in parts so that you can work your magic. Almost. 😊
Let’s get it done 👀🔥 working on this STI made me want another GR 😂 this a slippery slope lol
Man, it's good to be back. Sadly I've been a little too busy to keep up with your videos for a while, but that's how life goes sometimes.
Totally get it, we all get busy and got things to take care of 🫶

My soul needed this video, thank you! This is what my car is but it's 2011 satin white pearl. Your content gives me confidence brother.
Wish you never got rid of the VB man, but definitely still enjoy your videos. Master at work with Subarus
If Subaru comes out with something exciting and new I’ll be all over it. Low key miss the blue VB every now and then
As a Subaru owner I just work on it myself and somehow run into problems every time so the fact you did this so fluent I respect it
Unfortunately they be like that sometimes, once you’ve done enough of them you figure out how to navigate the issues pretty easy
Learned so much from your channel. I picked up a 2010 WRX hatch (slim body) lots of dos and don’t thanks to your channel. 🙌🏽
Hopefully your enjoying the hatch 🥳
Slick move with that plastic card for the timing guides ur videos helped me get my gd back on the road thank u
little thing makes setting clearance quick! Hows the GD Treaing ya?!
A stock location turbo, top mount and equal header STI with coils, chassis mounts upgrades is such a fun car.
Awesome video. I was building a JDM piano while you were playing on my phone. I’m sure the hardest thing about the build was the heat, no? Awesome work getting this together in those crap conditions. Big boy pants engaged, and the results spoke for themselves!
The heat was by far the worst part. Was around 102 in the shop when putting that thing together 😅
@@Smeedia crazy. Good on you powering through it.
the burns in my pocket holes if i lived in the states near you...another amazing video man
🫶🫶
You and Devin need to do a video of who can pull, rebuild, then reinstall a subie engine. That would be some amazing content
I love my Killer B oil fill relocation for FMIC setups. Makes changing and filling the oil so much easier! Nice build overall.
That it does, def a good addition to have when going to a FMIC 🔥
Super slick build
Sick! So sick! I would be so happy to have you build my car. How cool. I’m stock piling parts right now but life in maui is getting more expensive by the day. A freaking watermelon is $28 here now. So spare money for mods is a little tricky these days. But someday I’ll have the sauce too 😊
$28 for a watermelon?! 🥲 is cantaloupe any cheaper?
These videos are always fun
it feels so good to get subie content!
After the FD is done we have two big Subaru projects coming 🤘

@@Smeedia Have a 14 STI, just stock it looks so mean, loveee the widebody sedans😭🥵 got big plans for 'er
That was a great vid! Cool build for sure. Making sauce is good!
We like the sauce 😮💨
You should do a video where you actually degree the cams. Especially like you said, after you rotate they're always slightly off. Should be able to pick up some free horsepower by dialing in the cam timing. I know that would require a much higher spec build with adjustable cam gears and higher lift more duration camshafts.
We never really use adjustable cam gears and if we do it’s pretty rare. Ext time I have a set come through I can do so 🫡
4:09 boi they torqued that filter 😂
That was the tightest oil filter I have ever seen 😂
@@Smeedia I bought a 2013 sport tech sedan STI with problemes...did the oil change 3 weeks ago. I had the same exact problem... itsn't the filters suppose to be hand tight? ... I was swearing in french/english...
I also should i watched more videos, my j-pipe is non catted... the 02 sensor trips the CEL light all the time. I thought the cobb acessport would give ma tune to bypass it, little did I not know since 2022 cobb no longer support maps that trick emissions..
I gotta go to my tuner here in Quebec (Lachute Performance)
Sadge my friend :(
Also I didnt know that its bad to have a after market air filter + j-pipe together regardless of whatever map Since It creates too much boost that it can damage the engine or worse blow it up? He said in order to have those 2 combinations I would need to get a westgate and some other mod in order for it to work properly
Def a spicy build
thing scoots now!

Damn you not only rebuilt the engine in 48 h you serviced the entire car and change brakes 🤯🤯
Brakes and fluid flush don’t take too long to knock out 🙌
Nice job on the build. That car needs springs and retainers so bad, that 7000rpm redline on a next gen 6466, it’s just getting going when it cuts.
Oh 100% 😅 built motor I’m sure will be in the future for it. How’s the STI build coming?! Almost done at fab?!
@@Smeedia haha I’m building the truck right now and parts are taking time so things keep escalating. It may be at 1500whp before September and I’m really thinking about a coyote in the STI chassis now.
Someday... Currently just waiting for news on mine 😂😂😂
Any updates? 👀
@@Smeedia not yet. I'll be calling and messaging again next week. They are closed Sat/Sun and had to wait on inspector and full parts list to file claim.
If only I lived near you, I would get this done to my wrx sti I just purchased.
I have an 08 WRX and only have 90K, been sitting in storage for 3 plus years due to deployments...I also just pulled the trigger and statrted to mod for power on stock block got the BB500 with e-85 pushing 440 on mustang dyno.
IMO nothing wrong with stock block modding, they don’t sell for much used. So might as well get some enjoyment out of em 🔥
@@Smeedia got the BB500 just incase i wanted to go up on HP in the future, I know Im going to need the internals done and maybe go with IAG short block in the future, but for the time being Im happy where im @ especially cause I live in CALI. Thank you for all your content by the way, made some good decisions on relaibilty mods and accompanying mods first to get the turbo and the E-85 kit put in without a hitch.
Love to see subaru content again
Much more coming after the FD is done 👌

Nice. Good work

im starting to get the hang of Ramen.
Same guy that put the oil filter on did the bell housing bolts
Wouldn’t surprise me 😂
It's always good to watch your work! Nice and clean! What's a round about price to get this work done?
650hp in a small car that thing probably SCOOTS
🚗 💨
First gr sedan on the channel? You’d love mine full tomei exhaust set up and Grimm speed front mount and a bunch more goodies
I think the second? I’m half tempted to buy a sedan after this one 😅
@@Smeedia that sounds badass
The tunes are dialed now. It’s the poor axles that will shit the guts out. Although the stock ringlands are not gonna withstand any knock. But that’s why I bore to 100mm after this and run forged pistons. But let’s see how long she lasts.
Axles should be solid in this, unless he’s launching the car HARD (which he shouldn’t be in a stock motor too often) the axles should hold up for a bit
Axles are the least of the worries.
Cool. I didn’t notice but it seemed that that you didn’t upgrade the oil system. That can’t be good long term, no?
Already had a killer B pan and pick up 👌

Would be smart to put Apr head studs at least to hold the boost or does the oem bolts can take it
From what we’ve seen for Stock motors OEM head bolts seem to be a bit better. The car ended at 29ish lbs.
But like I said this is obviously not an idea set up 😅
@@Smeedia lol no I get it even with 20g I think I should off done the studs at least until it blows but so far it’s been ok or at least I think it been
Keeping my STI ( just like the one in your video ) but picking up my brand new daily tonight, a K20, can't believe they have a port injected engine in a 2024 model.
This channel has been a huge inspiration to me, I've been wanting a Hawkeye sti and finally got one it has 106,000 miles with a slightly moded fuel system any recommendations before giving it any power goal is 350whp
Go through and fix any issues, get maintains uo to date then start building away 🥳

Hey Smeedia, I know youre a busy man but are you still learning how to Tune? Im sure alot of us nerds would love some self-tuning vids.

Oh 100% 😂
Would you say when done correctly the stock 257 could hold up to the originally
planned 400whp without much trouble , or is it still pretty risky ?
It’s definitely a lot safer, the real factor of how long they will last is how the car is driven and taken care of. I’ve owned multiple stock block cars at 450whp without any issue on em 💪
Let him cook, let him cook. The chef in the kitchen, serving up the main course like always. Good stuff, my guy. Gotta pay them bills.
Got cars to build 💪🔥
Everyday I look forward to your videos keep it up Tanner 🥳. Also I wanted to get your input on what alternator to choose for my 05 Legacy GT. Stock or upgraded? The car just has a Cobb intake and upgraded intercooler. I’ve heard having a an upgraded alt with higher amp output helps later on with power goals.
For now the factory one will still work perfect for ya 🥳🫡
Piston #4 to the infinity and beyond 😂
I see #1 go more than any 🤑
Gotta put on the Getadom cylinder-4 cooling mod, utilize that bunghole and cool #4 down :)
@@Smeedia yep, my '05 Outback XT knocked on #1 lol
@@MrMcbearwe don’t use the cyl 4 cooling mods, nothing wrong with using em though
gonna be building mine soon. have a 20g blouch right now wanting to be at about 500 whp. do you like that power in these cars? what turbo do you typically use for that power? I personally care more about spool times than roll racing high hp. appreciate you!
What fuel type? E85 or pump? 👀
Normally for stock location FP Blacks are my go to. Good response, good power band and all the turbo sounds 😍
@@Smeedia going to get p2p racing short block but the goal is 500 on e85. What’s you recommend peak power on E stock bottom end?
That clutch will outlast the block lol
That clutch started slipping on the dyno 😅
@@Smeedia ooof. Down the rabbit hole we go 🤑
Personally I think high HP stock block builds are the way to go with the EJ. The built motors dont last that long anyway imo and you can pick up stock sti short blocks oem new for like $5k.
It’s def a gamble, but if you wanna have some fun with the car . Why not use the engine you’ve already got in it and enjoy it for a bit. Used stock blocks don’t sell for much so might as well get some fun out of em 😅
Build it for 650 and tune it to 450. It will still be a monster but it’s gonna be a lot safer
@@Louzahsolgo big or go home
@@Louzahsolehhhhh, can still take out an engine built for 650 at 450, I always advise building an engine to the power goal you want. Specs and clearances may be set differently. Fuel types, boost levels etc dictate a lot
Oil filter needs to be snug by hand not UGGADUGGAA 😂
Lmao someone SENT that thing on there 😂
Tempted to do a small build on my ‘19 STI with the type RA. It’s got 72k, meticulous maintenance schedule. Do I rebuild? Buy a built block? Or just send it

@Smeedia thank you. If I ever get the car and the money I will definitely do that. Have a great day
I understand with E85 it's more safe to avoid detonation and destroy the engine but 500 torque it's going to bend a rod for sure pretty quick !😮
I have made 700+wtq on oem Subaru rods.😂 Placement of the torque is key
customer: tanner i need an oil change...
tanner:sure bring it in.
**48 hours later**
we end up with this video 🤷♂️
Accurate representation of how things escalated 😂
This build is going to last maybe 2 dozen pulls before it shoots a rod over Mount Rainier.
I look out my window every night waiting for that shooting star 💫
I’d like to know how long the owner can run a build like that with that much power.. let’s say the owner drove it with respect and occasional rips.
A year or two maybe longer. So many variables to put an accurate number on it
I have hundreds of stock motor customers at this point at 500+whp. It’s obviously hard to keep track of all of them and mileage but I have several examples going on 1-2 years and 50k+ miles without issue.
One example I will point out is a 21 STI I tuned at 5k miles with a original engine and 6466 combo, made 696whp @ 32PSI and is still living to this day 2 years later and is now at 60k miles on the engine.
Ownership will dictate 90% on how long something like this will last, treat it like a racecar and it will break like a racecar
If I done this I would have so many left over bolts lol
How much did all this cost? All the parts you put in and whatever you charged to do the job. Together what's the total cost to get to 650whp?
I think the owner spent around the 25K point for parts, labor and tuning
What's the piece of plastic you're using at 12:01? I'm assuming it's to not pinch the timing belt while tightening these screws?
Correct, I forget the size off the top of my head. But the thickness of the plastic is OE Spec for Gap. Just makes it easy to set clearance
hey bro I'm gonna have you put my fmic on oh wait I just found another 5 grand on the way to ets....... FML!!!! what a life lol
i nearly busted with the outcome of this beast
What’s the secret with the ETS rotated kit and preventing p0420?
Looks very very nice! What shop did it get dyno tuned?
Forced induction motorsports 💪 Bader flys out once a month to tune there
Look at that, easy peasy.
No fear/issues of the GR stumble having to stay series?
No signs of it while tuning, entire fuel systems been replaced at this point as well
@@Smeedia that’s awesome. I tried the good ole aeromotive fpr and no dampener but no luck. Now going parallel to hopefully end the issue altogether. 340 & 1050’s. Figured parallel would help cure the stumble and keep things healthier
not forged components and closed deck ? all stock internal ? Really impressive. i did Just Stage 1 on my Sedan. All is Stock except Exhaust ( Full Tomei ) and ECU, i did 345 hp and 513 nm... im So scared to go up with no forged.
Thx a lot for a video and for any answer. TY
I’m currently building mine but my tuner is saying the air pump kit is needed and I already have the oem tgv but finding all the bolts for everything is driving me crazy right now and I have a ej257 for the 2011 sti, what do you think lmk
You should be able to order the hardware new still. But it’s only 2 14mms, and a couple 10mm bolts to mount it all. eBay has some air pump stuff 👀
@@Smeedia is that including the bolts for the connecting the hose, solenoids and everything outside of just the mounting parts?
Fuel pump? Injectors? Or all stock for that part?
ID1700s and a radium hanger with dual Walbro 450s 👌
Holy shit that was insane 😮
So if I wanted to get this build done to mine, how much would it cost? Labor + Parts.
