Just wanted to add, if you ever wonder why mangas are so popular in France (and in other French-speaking countries, like here in Belgium ;) ), it's because during the late 80's ~ early 90's we had an IMMENSELY popular kids' tv show called "Club Dorothée" that broadcasted TONS of anime (Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, etc etc, everything!!), the paperback manga arrived with Akira as you said and then if I remember well it started with just Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball published by Glénat, and as it was a big success well it grew bigger and bigger and it never ended :)
I'm 42 so I remember how the variety in paperback manga titles was scarce at the time! (but it was half today's price ;D )

Pinning this since it's great info! Thank you. I had read that anime popularity in the '80's was the catalyst for manga in France, but it didn't go into detail. This is why I love TH-cam!

Those Spy x Family postcards looked so cute! I picked up the French volume 8 of Blue Period and simillarly to Frieren you showed, it came with a variant slip cover with one of my favourite artwork of the series and little artbook/sketchbook. Would be great to see more little extras added to English releases as well.

Oooooh I'm so jealous of that Blue Period one. I'd love to see that variant cover!

These single volume releases put the English multi volume box sets to shame

    • @profotaku

Absolutely. The price for one of these also astounded me. So cheap for the quality.

There is certainly more thought and care put into their editions, and it would be received well for English publishers to follow in similar footsteps. I want good quality more than anything...but jokes on us, we should spend more time learning languages hah. Interesting video!

Yo the full art with for SxF look amazing. Especially the cover volimes without the title.
Becky is a grade A side character.
I wish we got some nicer sets. France get so many

Yeah the art cards suprised me tbh. I wasn't expecting much. Becky needs her own side series.

I hope we'll see more little extras coming out with English manga.. Like the shikishi art boards that Kinokuniya has been doing once in a while!! Super jealous when I see all the extras that come with Japanese volumes (and French like you mentioned) and German publishers do a ton of extras too 😭

We also do have limited special editions in Germany. Containing variant covers and booklets (e.g. White Light Ceremony), little artbooks, sometimes with bonus stories (e.g. My Happy Marriage, The Case Study of Vanitas, Witch Hat Atelier) or collectible cards. I always try to get those if I'm interested in the series before they're sold out (most of them are about 10 to 15 Euro). 🙂

America manga industry is ass. They don’t care or caught up with consumer feeling. There are too slow. If you can read other languages and want to support the author just buy it in other languages. Every other country is the best when come to manga.

    • @profotaku

This reminds me of South Korea with their blu-ray editions. I am a huge cinephile, so these sort of snazzy editions that are the standard in other countries are very appealing. I see this most certainly applies to manga in France. Beautiful releases.

    • @profotaku

I'm very underwhelmed most of the time with the American limited editions. They feel cheap compared to even these small French Box sets
