I learned art at school from a 'very old' 😉 nun who was super keen on detail. She talked a lot about the Pre-Raphaelites. I used the tiniest of brushes & felt so useless because I was never accurate enough! I have to admit I also used to have very good eyesight & really admired the detail in such paintings. My eyesight has diminished over the years (I'm now in my 60s) but that has given me a new appreciation & a fresh perspective. My whole view of the world has changed in that I love how our brains can interpret what we see in so many ways & we can create the detail "in our mind's eye"! How many of us look up at clouds & see faces, and rabbits, and dragons! I definitely need to 'loosen up' & relax more & watching & listening (lovely voice!) to you Stuart has helped me realise I can start that journey today! 🙏 Thank you! ❤🎨❤
This the first time I've seen your video and your amazing style of teaching coupled with your very interesting life experiences that create lasting impressions in the mind. I am a beginner, barely 3 months old in my painting journey. But I am far advanced in age, 80. I was surprised that all of a sudden I just wanted to paint. I watch tutorial sessions of as many painters like you, who so unselflessly share their God-given talents. I learned a lot of your cloud making technique. I really have difficulty doing realistic clouds and trees. I appreciate wonderful painters like you who understand and seemingly feel the growing pains of "baby painters". I hope that my hand can dance like a balerina with the brush on a canvass. Someone told me I should not apologize for the pieces I have done but should own what i have finished. I had taken that advice to heart and I review again and again whatever I have done and I start redoing the crazy, ugly, funny features I placed in what I called my painting. Every piece of work that I do I iken to a child I have given birth to, I honesty search and search for my errors and I want to make it right. I became critical of my work so I could honestly observe my errors to hopefully produce something better and better each day. Truly I agree with what you said that you tell your students what is wrong and advise them how to do it right. I do not have the privilege of an amazing, excellent coach to guide me. I will continue to watch your videos again and again to get the feel of a teacher beside me. I am from the Philippines. I enjoy the fun and excitement and joy of seeing how I have improved in these 3 months journey. My grandchildren, my children and friends enable and inspire to me to go on and on and practice daily. I praise God for the creative gift of painting He gave you and I thank you for your generosity. I pray that you would be able to overcome the allergy that suddenly appeared in your body. I have been a photographer for years and I'm in a gallery but, a photograph is not enough to capture what I see. Living by the sea there are such dramatic skies that are unlike any over land. I need to paint and paint I shall. Your style, especially your skies, has been an inspiration to me, to capture what my cameras can not. Thank you.
Love your work. Your mention of teaching just reminded me of sculpture class in my first week at art school when I was 17, the tutor stood for a silent eternity looking at my effort and thinking he was impressed I asked what he thought. He said, "It's the most boring thing I've ever seen" and walked away leaving me very confused and hurt. I was a kid. Perhaps it taught me to explain criticism when I was head of several art departments in my career. You teach so well. I am trying still to loosen up after decades of commercial art. I’ve been searching for a new challenge. I’ve tried to study other painters and come away discourage. I don’t know if I could get past. Your voice is so soft and gentle. I actually think I could love this medium. Thank you. Even though you are alone, I was with you . I’m 75 yrs old. I’ve conquered sewing, baking, singing, walking, and seven kids. I stud art in College and now I’m going to invest in oils. Thank you so much for sharing this technique with me. If only I can get past ny perfectionist inclinations, and just paint and enjoy it.
Thank you Stuart,I have now finished several landscapes using your method. What fun they are to paint.I don't sell my paintings these days but give them away to friends if they like them and several have gone already obviously 77 years old is not to old to learn something new.
You have not only driven the stilted feeling out of my landscapes but also made my abstracts so much better. I just love your comforting voice leading the viewer to a much better place and a much more believable vista. Your idea of letting go and enjoying a more relaxed depiction makes so much sense. Like you I am obsessed with a sky that is not too settled, often in flux and usually at dawn or dusk. Possibly my biggest advantage was that nobody realized I was extremely nearsighted until I was 13 so I had the advantage of seeing life in a out of focus view. I was drawing from as soon as I could hold a pencil and have painted for 60+ Years. I was denied an art education but have taken dozens of workshops over the years which gave me an easier time developing my own conglomerate of style. I paint every day and look forward to watching your videos; you tend to relax me and remind me always to paint loosely and with joy....I thank you!

Watching your videos is like yoga for my brain! I love so many things about them. I struggle with the 'artist's eye' where you can see what needs to happen and what to do next. Sorry to hear about your food allergies! I've been reading a lot about this topic. Soy is a big no (genetically modified). Corn and wheat is the same if not worse! Nuts, veggies and fruits MUST be eaten organic otherwise the pesticides keep accumulating in your body causing all sorts of inflammations. Try non gluten food, organic quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat. No red meat, just organic chicken, wild salmon, avocado. I've been doing that for 7 months now and it changed a lot for my food intolerance. It's worth trying. Wish you a good health!! I discovered your channel recently and what I would give to be a student of 2020 class. (but that will never happen for me.) Yes sir, I have experienced the same kind of allergic food reactions. I only eat food I have prepared to limit my food allergies. Finding myself alone I have attempted to teach myself abstract painting, but upon discovering your channel I feel inspired to try your style of painting. I look forward to your teaching videos. Your philosophy about teaching and learning is very helpful to me, and the "just do it" is right on, many times I felt that I couldn't start. The lightness of self criticism to just change what isn't working, is so great.
I used the same attitude when I taught literature and rhetorical composition. It's all about using pizza to teach evaluation writing (imagine 20 students all examining 3 different kinds of pizza to gain data, then analyze the data, and then evaluating the 3 companies from which I had ordered the pizza. They produced amazing analyses in their writing. Fun, learning, and growth all together or Biology majors, math majors, lit majors, all kinds of people. It was wonderful. That's another reason I learn from your videos so well - because you teach as I would, so I learn in the same style. All works.
I had started to paint a few years ago. It was something I always wanted to do, but I got really frustrated at not getting the effects I wanted and stopped painting altogether. I just ran across your channel a couple weeks ago and I'm painting again. (Not that I'm a great painter or anything) I am really having a lot of fun. I have been following you for some time now Stuart and my painting has come on leaps and bounds, in fact i am now teaching beginners in the same style at my local art club. Taking a large canvas and using large decorators brushes forces one to loosen-up and I instantly took to it. Can't thank you enough.
I have just an hour ago viewed one of your videos. This is my second video. I can follow your instructions and have enjoyed your combination of brushes. It’s been since 1974 that i have found an artist that begins as I once learned in the beginning of my first art classroom experience. Your narrative is just fine and I get a chuckle now and then.
I can almost smell the rain & hear the distant thunder. Lovely work! I especially like the contrast made with the pink & bluish gray clouds. The scene is so realistic. Isn't it wonderful how simple contrast in lighting & color can create such dramatic displays? I love it! Thank you Mr. Davies.

Hi Stuart. I just want to respond to your problem with allergies. I used to be severely allergic to cats. Now I have three of them; no problem. The key is to strengthen your immune system. I strengthened mine through two minutes of laughter each day. I laughed as hard as I could. Thirty seconds on, and then thirty seconds rest. I saw results in three weeks. There are many ways to strengthen your immune system. There is plenty of information on TH-cam on how to do that. Beautiful painting. I paint myself; mostly portraits.
Oh how I love the commentary :) Also I absolutely love how the painting begins with what looks like scribbles with oil paint and it turns out so gorgeous :)
Stuart, this is really beautiful and THANK YOU for sharing with us. I paint with Acrylics, so I'm going to try to figure the best way to try your wonderful style. I'm glad you got your allergies figured out and glad you're feeling better!... I was hoping it wasn't the oil paints.. I know some people who had to switch to Acrylics because of the oils messing with their skin. Looking forward to your next video!
Hi Stuart, After watching several of your videos I felt the need to add my comments and thoughts. Art is something that never interested me. However, now that I am in my sunset years I am weirdly drawn to it to the point where I have subscribed to several channels similar to yours, watching each video from beginning to end. I have yet to put paint to canvas (or MDF/Plywood). I can come up with several excuses as to why I haven't but they're all lame. Your tutorial videos though have pushed me to the first step in this journey I have embarked on. I have brushes, I have plywood and I have paints of various colours. My first attempt at creating a work of art will definitely be influenced using the techniques that you teach. Just slab the paint on randomly, make a mess and then unravel it later to reveal what transpires. I do like your teaching style and your tips, such as the eye stopper tip to prevent the eye from going away from the painting on the sides, the use of linseed oil, palette knife etc.
your voice is so relaxed at calming and soothing reminds of my HP audio CD and very educational art video i draw and colour alot but not very e experienced at painting but after watching your videos I've got a good idea on what a painting should show and you want a painting to look very good video mate

I discovered your channel recently and what I would give to be a student of 2020 class. (but that will never happen for me.) Yes sir, I have experienced the same kind of allergic food reactions. I only eat food I have prepared to limit my food allergies. Finding myself alone I have attempted to teach myself abstract painting, but upon discovering your channel I feel inspired to try your style of painting. I look forward to your teaching videos. Thank you for sharing yourself with the world.
Your philosophy about teaching and learning is very helpful to me, and the "just do it" is right on, many times I felt that I couldn't start. The lightness of self criticism to just change what isn't working, is so great.

I used the same attitude when I taught literature and rhetorical composition. It's all about using pizza to teach evaluation writing (imagine 20 students all examining 3 different kinds of pizza to gain data, then analyze the data, and then evaluating the 3 companies from which I had ordered the pizza. They produced amazing analyses in their writing. Fun, learning, and growth all together or Biology majors, math majors, lit majors, all kinds of people. It was wonderful. That's another reason I learn from your videos so well - because you teach as I would, so I learn in the same style. All works.
I had started to paint a few years ago. It was something I always wanted to do, but I got really frustrated at not getting the effects I wanted and stopped painting altogether. I just ran across your channel a couple weeks ago and I'm painting again. (Not that I'm a great painter or anything) I am really having a lot of fun. I have been following you for some time now Stuart and my painting has come on leaps and bounds, in fact i am now teaching beginners in the same style at my local art club. Taking a large canvas and using large decorators brushes forces one to loosen-up and I instantly took to it. Can't thank you enough.

I have just an hour ago viewed one of your videos. This is my second video. I can follow your instructions and have enjoyed your combination of brushes. It’s been since 1974 that i have found an artist that begins as I once learned in the beginning of my first art classroom experience. Your narrative is just fine and I get a chuckle now and then.
I can almost smell the rain & hear the distant thunder. Lovely work! I especially like the contrast made with the pink & bluish gray clouds. The scene is so realistic. Isn't it wonderful how simple contrast in lighting & color can create such dramatic displays? I love it! Thank you Mr. Davies.

Thank you for showing how to paint clouds! I am taking a college course and we don’t see anything painted in person. I am struggling to reproduce a photo accurately with wispy clouds and just watching you paint has helped so much. I wish I lived in England so that I could take a class with you!

Was two-thirds of the way through a painting and come to a big block trying to make everything perfect keep looking at the painting and couldn't pick up the brush so started looking at some different tutorials and came across yours and man am I glad I did you don't know how much I needed to hear that it's just a painting, Relax and enjoy it, have fun I could go on and on but I won't bore you, I'll just say thank you thank you very much😎

Hi Stuart. I just want to respond to your problem with allergies. I used to be severely allergic to cats. Now I have three of them; no problem. The key is to strengthen your immune system. I strengthened mine through two minutes of laughter each day. I laughed as hard as I could. Thirty seconds on, and then thirty seconds rest. I saw results in three weeks.
There are many ways to strengthen your immune system. There is plenty of information on TH-cam on how to do that.

Stuart, this is really beautiful and THANK YOU for sharing with us. I paint with Acrylics, so I'm going to try to figure the best way to try your wonderful style. I'm glad you got your allergies figured out and glad you're feeling better!... I was hoping it wasn't the oil paints.. I know some people who had to switch to Acrylics because of the oils messing with their skin. Looking forward to your next video!

After watching several of your videos I felt the need to add my comments and thoughts. Art is something that never interested me. However, now that I am in my sunset years I am weirdly drawn to it to the point where I have subscribed to several channels similar to yours, watching each video from beginning to end. I have yet to put paint to canvas (or MDF/Plywood). I can come up with several excuses as to why I haven't but they're all lame.
Your tutorial videos though have pushed me to the first step in this journey I have embarked on. I have brushes, I have plywood and I have paints of various colours. My first attempt at creating a work of art will definitely be influenced using the techniques that you teach. Just slab the paint on randomly, make a mess and then unravel it later to reveal what transpires.
I do like your teaching style and your tips, such as the eye stopper tip to prevent the eye from going away from the painting on the sides, the use of linseed oil, palette knife etc.
your voice is so relaxed at calming and soothing reminds of my HP audio CD and very educational art video i draw and colour alot but not very e experienced at painting but after watching your videos I've got a good idea on what a painting should show and you want a painting to look very good video mate
