A redo painting like this is exactly what I needed to see. I am very grateful to you for doing this. Many words of humorous wisdom are just icing on your oil painting.
I also find that your videos give me courage. I often get stalled because it's not perfect, despite hearing you often saying not to worry about it. Your "nice mess" often turns into something marvelous. I just have been stalled for two weeks now. Your video has given me a fresh dose of courage. Headed back to my easel this evening. Excited again.
Thank you so much Stuart! Just found your channel and very much looking forward to giving this a go. Thank you so much for demystifying this and making it accessible to folks like us. I'm guessing a lot of people are painting because of your encouragement. Cheers.-Rob☮☮☮
Your word play is a charming aspect of your videos. AND don't apologize for "getting in the way" because we, the viewers, don't think that way. We only want to watch you do what you do to create magic with a very simple palette.
i've been binge watching your videos for a while now and i really like your approach in painting. Your technique is so rough yet so elegant and free at the same time. It truly shows the essence of art which is the freedom of expression. I really like to learn and adapt your techniques. 😁
👋First things first, Stuart, you've painted a very interesting and very beautiful "beachscape". I love it. - Secondly, you asked about the meaning of ebb and flow, Stuart. Low tide (ebb) means that the water is drawn back into the sea, high tide (flow) means that it comes back to the shore. (I guess you knew that) - And third, I talk to myself all the time, not only when painting. But I don't hear voices 🙃 My dog keeps thinking, who is she talking to ?! Someone once said that he who talks to himself has discovered his inner self. So don't worry, it's not a sign of any brain disease ☺ it's rather a sign of intelligence. - The sky looks fantastic with these well done clouds, they make half of the movement in this gorgeous artwork. The other half I give to the waves which you depicted beautifully, running onto the beach. The chalk cliffs speak for themselves - magnificent ! In addition, this painting has a very good three-dimensionality.💖Thank you, Stuart, I wish you well, have a good week. - Beautiful cat !💖
Your school and your tutors have helped to create the marvel that is your work. Whether it was a lithographic stone or painting, they have helped build your inner eye. I'm so glad to know that those people helped you move forward. Amazing
Thank you for sharing your process with us. I like the cathedral-like effect of the cliff. The sky reminds me of both El Greco and Kokoschka. Very dramatic!
I absolutely love your thought process, I am always guaranteed a spontaneous giggle, thank you. I generally download your videos to watch so don't often comment. So I am taking this opportunity to let you know that I am a huge fan and I love your art. I love tonalism the way you teach it.
Good Morning Stuart (or afternoon!), this is one of your most insightful lessons yet! Thank you for the great tutorials! Love each and every one of them!! Take care, be well! All the Best to your wife and cat! K
“You know” … 😂So good to see your latest video. Take good care of yourself Stu, you sound great. Lovely seascape, I love the size of the board too! Cheers
I love that you chose this composition. You showed me how to do cliffs and I do have the right palette knife to do it. I'm just waiting till I'm done with all my canning and hunting so I can start painting again.
I’m so pleased to have found you! I’m watching all of your videos, past and present and feel that I may be able to “fix” some of my own drab and boring landscape paintings that have been sitting and waiting for an answer. I do enjoy the videos of you going back into earlier works and “fixing” them. Amazing work. I certainly consider you “The Sky Master”. Bravo and thank you
Well, you've already given me some hints about why my painting with bluffs is not right. I've been looking at it, and looking at it, and it just hasn't been right. Got some ideas now, and I'll move on to the next dramatic change. Thanks for that. Also note, I was finally able to get my hands on some Payne's Grey. I'm so amazed at what a great blue-grey this is. Now I have to get more. I've almost used it all.
I very much enjoyed the tutorial and listening to the insightful and thought provoking comments. I hope to get in on another of your Saturday sessions soon. Thanks again
Quel splendide tableau que vous nous avez fait sous nos yeux ébahis à partir d'une peinture ratée comme vous dites. Je suis contente de vous avoir découvert même si je suis incapable de faire ce que vous nous enseignez si généreusement.
beautiful as always 💖 I love your technique I've seen others scrap away oils and rearrange/redo paintings it always fascinates me when I see it being done .....I love watching artist as yourself work their magic 🙂 I don't have any talent at all I mean it's in my head but can't put it on paper, canvas or board for the life of me 🤣
Back again watching your "A Day at the Beach" ... I love ocean scenes ... and being by the water, on the water but, like you, not 'in' the water. Again, like you, I sink ...
Stuart Stuart your painting is absolutely gorgeous, strong, storm on the way, lovely beach...this painting is my favourite ❤...can you do more that involve the sea...I watched this lesson until the early hours of the morning....I do hope your better you do sound stronger...take care keep on teaching...
😁"I've got to stop saying 'you know' . . . You know . ." Lol you crack me up Stuart. It's a lovely and nice big painting now!! I say it's a good thing sweet Tiger doesn't jump unto your palette -- can you imagine trying to clean her off ?? 😳
A dramatic improvement, Stuart.♥️ Tiger is a beautiful cat, thank you for sharing. My eldest son has a grey and white "Tiger," but I call her Gerkins.😂
After the initial scraping, the painting took on the appearance of a scene out of a Cecil B. DeMille movie! You are obviously good at creating drama, whether intentionally or not, LOL! I am wondering if there would be a way to create a support frame to attach to the easel to prevent larger boards or canvas from wobbling? Perhaps one of your viewers know and could share? Thank you Stuart, I enjoy every single one of your videos!
Wonderful transition from a good painting to a wonderful painting.🎨🖌 I think the more elongated canvas is more pleasing to the eye as well, (Fibonacci). Have a blessed day.🙏
Lovely painting; I live in Purbeck where we have chalk cliffs and 'Old Harry Rocks' and I will be using what I learned today on a painting. I am subscribed but can only click on 'like' the once despite watching your vids several times. Hope youtube have another way of counting 'watches.
Greatly enjoyed this video, as always. I noticed you caught the cliff white with your knuckle when you painted the grass. I have purchased some long handled pallet knives for that very reason. They are brilliant in fact using them has started me using a pallet knife more often.
Hello Stuart! Just a beautiful and striking painting. I'm always a bit afraid of painting water- I love your technique- it looks very realistic and beautiful. I love everything about this painting - it's very harmonious and moving. Have a great day and kiss Tiger Lily, she is so cute!
Stuart, this looks like the sort of day I would go to the beach. Loved the way you show the details and the drama of the whole composition, really nice tutorial, I've learned a lot. Just subbed and will be viewing again, Wills
Very instructive as always, Stuart. My only comment and I say this because my own painting of the white cliffs of Dover is currently irritating me, is that the sea sand should be a little less yellow ochre and a bit more light brown/beige plus yelliw ochre. Its a bit too startling. 😊😁
Stewie? Did that slip out? Adorable! Shhh I won’t tell anyone. ☺️ On a painterly note in addition to your amazing skills, you’ve taught me that I can rework a painting without fear. Or, to be more accurate that YOU can rework a painting without me despairing. I’ve come to trust you implicitly. BTW: I’ve seen some build a long narrow ledge-like shelf to use as a large easel. No need to buy the building!
Good evening! I’ve been interested in painting for years and after finding your channel i finally went out and got all the necessary items need to begin painting. I’m having a hard time with the consistency of my paint, having enough to cover the desired area. I have multiple mediums and and happy to make mistakes and honestly am enjoying just sitting in front of the canvas and painting but I was hoping you might have some insight into mixing paint with medium and how much paint you actually use for a painting (give or take)
Question Stuart. What is your best suggestion for a person to use when they don't have photographic memory like you have? I would really like to see you start using the Liquin as I have had some problems with it. They have a thing called a Paint Tube Wringer that squeezes all the paint out. It is a wonderful gadget. You can use it for toothpaste or any tube. 🌹
@@PaintingWithYovette You might consciously develop your memory by looking for more outside details and describing them to yourself as an ongoing process.
May I ask you, please Stuart, if you are going to do some glazing on this painting. It is great as it is, but your comments of possibly doing even more to it has me intrigued. Love your work, love your voice, love your teaching technique.
What is wild is that the water during tide us actually being pulled toward the moon so that is y the water is receding making the ocean a bit deeper. So we say it gets lower but it actually just pools in a smaller area then when the moon goes to the other side it raises back up and envelopes more lade as the stress of the gravity lessens of so little and the water rises again yet it is actually a bit less shallow. Kinda great when you think of it.
Enjoyed watching this again today and learned a bit more. Always good to review you videos Stuart. Wish I could "Like" it agsin but youtube doesnt allow. It will result in me "unliking" and then " reliking.". dont know if that is good for your ratings. .
As usual , Stuart , you are correct about reflections in the sea.......I hadn't realised this previously......but it raises a question in my mind.......if it is the movement in the water that disperses any reflections , why does the same not apply to rivers?
One of the issues I've found when I paint cliffs such as these, I end up with a lot of "stripes" down the side of the hill. NO NO NO. So, I have to do the angled swipes that give the feel of wild stone with water that carved it.
Hi my friend. Thanks for the great video you shared with us. very interesting video really great thank you for sharing the video please keep in touch. Keep posting videos that I follow 💞.,, 💗 ..💖, ..💗.💖, ,.💞.,
My son sent me a photo of a mountain in the Rockies of Colorado. The photo is taken from 11000 feet up at a 14 000 foot peak. The shadows are so deep and impenetrable that I can only use black to paint them. I have not yet been successful at getting the reality of the shadows. My daughter, the painter, has suggested that I need to be sure the contrast with white/gray will accentuate the black. However, you should know that this is VERY different from your wonderful cliffs here. VERY different overall and in specific ways. No chalk, it's just all rock, rock, rock. Harsh, dramatic, hard to paint. Hmmm
Unfortunately or fortunately, whichever way you look at it I suppose, I am invited to share a box at Ascot Champions Day this Saturday but I would appreciate a link to Saturday 22nd. Thanks
Stunning. You are so generous with your time and tuition. Such heart in your work .
Masterful dialogue combines humour with fast riveting and bold art construction: a teacher who never fails to teach and to entertain.

Will that have the same effect if acrylic paint is use instead oil ?
No, not really. Acrylic is basically lumpy watercolour :-)
