First Federal Job With The TSA....What I Had To Do To Get It

  • This was my foot in the door to a Federal job and they definitely didn't make it easy. I worked at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. It was an entertaining 2 years until I quit and moved to a better agency. This is just the story of what I had to do in the middle of a recession to get a job. The hiring process took 2 years and I have more than enough material to talk about what life was like working here. I made a lot of friends and even picked up a mentor who helped me move on to bigger and better things. Living in a recession and finding work was not easy. So I had to celebrate every victory no matter how small.

    Don’t insult and disrespect your audience’s time with what you apparently consider to be engagingly and interesting material. I will only endure the remaining 3:28 because I’m considering applying to become a TSO. Hopefully, the last minutes will contain some “meat” and no more useless “fat”.🤯

      Yea this was my 2nd or 3rd video. I never meant to make my channel about government employment or TSA. My original intent was to help new college graduates understand that the economy works in cycles and show them that millennials went through a rough recession as well and we all still did fine. The skits were mainly to illustrate how I ended up where I am.
      It was this video that drew an unexpected audience and gave my channel a more finite direction. The first few videos are a rough watch but viewer feed back really helped to cater to audience needs.

    What should I do to become a TSA VIPR, I haven't found anything related.?

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To get on the VIPR teams you will need to be hired and trained as a regular TSO first (in most cases). Then you will need to be trained as a Behavior Detection Officer, federal air marshal, an inspector or explosives specialist. The inspectors and explosive specialists do not need prior TSO experience, most of them are prior retired military or ex-law enforcement bomb squad specialists. For Behavior Detection Officer you will need to start as a regular TSO then apply for the promotion to Behavior Detection Officer or already hold a similar position within the TSA.
      Once you meet the previous requirements you will need to actually apply to VIPR team assignments and you will be assigned to a federal air marshal field office.
      This process is not quick and there's going to be a lot of factors that will determine if your are chosen for the position. However, I've seen it done.

    A friend of mine who works in Customs told me I don’t want to be a TSO, but I took the test anyway and PASSED. I’m curious, why you hated the job? Was it the amount of work or did you have to work crazy hours? Or was it the people you had to deal with? Were the other employees at least nice to you? Thank you so much for sharing your experience :)

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn’t hate the job, I was just stuck working there because my job opportunities were very limited at the time since the economy crashed in 2008 and didn’t recover until 2012. It wasn’t a lot of work at all, it just super repetitive and monotonous. Nothing interesting about it at all. To me the job was just a paycheck and a resume builder.
      No crazy hours, my schedule for 22mos was 1400-1900 M/Tu off. I was part-time and living at my parents house, not the ideal situation but it was keeping me off the streets and my student loans paid.
      The people can be extremely hit or miss. I made a lot of life long friends there and I still keep in touch with them. Some people were just miserable to be around in general. Many of the employees were nice to me and a good handful were very hostile.
      I left because I wanted to do work that was challenging and would give me exposure to more opportunities and professional experiences. I wanted a career, not a job. You miss out a lot on life working odd hours, weekends, holidays and nights.
      I just needed work and I wasn’t in any shape to be picky. TSA is a good start point and that’s just how I treated it.
      Hope this helps.

    What is the starting pay for a TSO agent?

    • @theTSAguy

      Between $13-$25, depending on which airport you're working at.

    I have an interview Wednesday for TSO in PA...how crazy is the schedule? Pay? How do the raises go? How fast can I move up without a degree? I'm in college (criminal justice associate's) so I can move up somewhere in homeland security this is my foot in the door I'm hoping.

      I'm doing the background check now for a TSO position in New York and it is extremely exhausting they want and need so much information which I understand but sheesh. Did you start working? How is it is it worth the hassle?

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The initial investigation is the most exhausting and annoying. My initial interview was 8 hours for a TSO job that only required public trust clearance. When I applied for USCIS I got a higher clearance and they only went back to the date of my last investigation interview. That one took 2 hours. My last investigation interview only took 2 hours as well. So I get easier since you’ll have less information to cover later on. Is it worth the hassle….depends on how bad you want the job. I was unemployed when I applied to TSA so I had no other choice but to deal with it.

      @@JUBA524 The test is not hard. It's written at the high school standard. The interview is very easy. I made videos on those and interview tips. You MUST be a citizen before applying. The security investigator will verify your citizenship but that will be after you are hired. You will need to prove US citizen on your first day of orientation.

    Hi Fazel your videois very informative, I received an email of acceptance for tsa, but they told me to schedule a date for the CBT . When I logged on my dashboard there's no option to schedule a date. I've sent an email to tsa because they are not accepting live calls because of covid. Do you have a suggestions for me?

    • @theTSAguy
      @theTSAguy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When did you get the test invite? There might be a follow-up email that allows you to schedule. The email you received should have test scheduling procedures. Make sure you read the entire email. When I received a test invite email, there was a link right in the email that allowed me to schedule. This was also back in 2009, a lot has changed since then.
      Wait and see what the TSA email reply says. Since covid they changed their entire hiring procedure. I spoke to a lot of people having these issues.
      If you haven't subscribed and given the videos a thumbs-up, please do so. I'll have more videos coming. I'll also start a Facebook group in the coming weeks where subscribers can talk about these problems and post solutions.
