First look inside TSA training academy

  • Only on "CBS This Morning," we take a look at how the TSA is making an unprecedented move to improve airport security. The agency is training all its new screeners at one centralized academy on the grounds of the federal law enforcement training centers in Glynco, Georgia. It was created after a number of missteps that raised doubts about the TSA's ability to properly screen airline passengers. Kris Van Cleave reports.

@Angel S that defeats the purpose of centralized training. With more locations there's a larger possibility of mistep, but by having 1 facility you guarantee everyone WILL receive thee same training. Plus, it's good to travel, and see your country. That's kinda the whole point here don't you think? Haha

It’s easier to catch potential threats if the terrorists and criminals think the tsa is incompetent.

I just went through some of the comments. How many of you people have actually tried to become a TSA agent. Have you tried going through the pre screening test. 99% of you would fail because of spelling mistakes. The other 1% couldn't read the X-ray screens because it would be too hard. Before you start throwing stones, think about it. What have you done to provide the reaction, what have you done to provide the consequence.

But, obviously, prices are sky high, and the weather is freezing cold almost year round in a lot of the areas where the airports are located. I was employed by the TSA for six years and saw airlines pressuring TSO's to "hurry up" and stop slowing the flow of money but I was a supervisor at the time and we don't work for them. THEY'RE the reason 9/11 happened in the first place. I totally blame the airlines for 9/11 but compare today's airport security to pre 9/11 security. I haven't seen a successful terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11 since 9/11 but the same problems that plagued airline security before 9/11 still exists in every major theme park in the country. TSA had a bad beginning like other agencies it was not perfect but it has improved, maybe not at 100%. If u say it's worthless today (2021) it's bcuz u must've tested 'em urself, u went thru the scan recently & sneaked a prohibited item pass 'em, right? I did & failed twice. I have a degree in Counter Terrorism. Currently going through the hiring process. The problem is all law enforcement jobs are so difficult to get into, depending on demographics. The TSA is a, "foot in the door position" to other federal positions, and sadly starting pay is about $10,000 a year higher than the local agencies. Is it a joke of a job, sure. Do they have any arresting authority, no. However, this is one of the ways to get your foot in the door for other opportunities. 6 months so far, and I've only made it to the computer based test portion of the hiring process. I've heard some people taking almost 2 years.

A lesson for the TSA. Since you won't hire military or police. A woman was flying on her own , an Israeli security officer asked her questions , without frisking. "Are you married ? Answer = no. Do you have a boyfriend ? = Answer yes. Also I am pregnant, with his baby . " Red flag there was a radio in the baggage full of explosives. Checking does nothing without a qualified interrogator. And at least a few armed observers.
