- There are plenty of career opportunities after leaving the TSA. Many former officers go to both public and private sector. I myself promoted and transferred to US Citizenship and Immigration Services under the US Department of Homeland Security. Just because you work at the TSA doesn't mean that your career prospects are limited nor does it mean that you will be stuck with a dead end career. Your career is what you make of it.
Former TSA officers have taken jobs as law enforcement officers, sci/tech/engineering, corporate Fortune 500 Companies, government interpreters, US immigration officers, and attorneys. There's nothing saying you should follow these career paths. What you choose to do will depend on your professional goals.

I’m 58. I hope I’m not crazy 😂 I just got into the pipeline at a TSA hiring event yesterday because my current job will likely lay me off soon. I hope this is a smart move. I’m a patient guy who can become more patient.
Been with TSA 3 years and everything your saying is so true. You have to pay your dues. Everyone needs to know that USA jobs is all about keywording and formatting of your resume. The government likes tenure. Don’t expect to put in 1 or 2 years and transfer where ever . I work in the DMV and trust me this place is all about who you know and who knows you. Not one way. We get a lot of transfers from other airport just because HQ is so close. It’s a struggle expect to network and connect before growing that’s all im saying

Spot on using it as a stepping stone. Got my associates degree in counter terrorism, about to finish my bachelors in homeland security. I also have 9 years in the Marine Corps trying to go border patrol once I’m done in the military in January trying to use TSA so I can keep working for the federal government while I wait on the border patrol process that way I can keep working towards my federal retirement as well as gain something else to put on my boarder patrol application. It also seems to be a stable enough job to work at while I work towards my masters degree in homeland security! Just finished my CBE hoping the rest of the process goes smoothly

Have previous government experience and will use this to finish my final semester in obtaining my Bachelors degree and to also leverage myself into something better. Hey man, I loved your video. Got tons of value from your video. Your tone and speed were what made the video comprehensible. I acquired a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Mangement Aviation with a 4.0 GPA and now I am looking to acquire a MBA and Juris Doctor and hoping that this is a steeping stone to getting a job that can satisfy my pursuits to finally begin a family. I am so scared to father children because I have not a steady income that I am still to have any children though I will be celebrating my two year anniversary with my wife. Glad I could help. A lot of TSA employees go to CBP since the job functions are highly similar. All options are great choices. The type of work will vary greatly based on which agency (Federal or local) you end up going to.

Thanks for your videos! I found them because I received a TJO for a TSO role and searched YT for hiring process videos. I’ve completed all the onboarding forms except for the e86 (I’m waiting for a username and password to complete the form in eApp).
The reason I applied for and am interested in the TSO role is because I’m a cybersecurity student. The role and subject matter I’m studying align, and the schedule they’re hiring for is part-time, so it works with being a student. My goal is to become a Penetration Tester and I’m focusing on getting into the fall 2025 DoD CySP to achieve my career goal.

Thank you for making this video! I'm currently in the process of becoming a TSO officer. I have my associate degree in criminal justice and my bachelor's degree in Digital Forensic. I would like to move to another agency or go higher in the ranks. What are some positions or agencys you think would be a great fit for me ?
You can go into almost anything you want. There is no set career path.
Start looking into jobs that are in the 1801 job series. These are compliance type jobs and require analytical skills. Go to USAJOBS and search "1801" in the keywords. You'll easily qualify for 90% of those jobs.
Hi Fazle, I recently was accepted into the waiting pool, however; I never really wanted to be any of those for mentioned careers. Not truly sure what I’d like to do long term, but I enjoy people for the most part & I feel TSA would drastically change that. Plus, the job description itself sort of stinks. Should I continue with this path choice?
Hey Jason, there isn't a firm yes/no answer to this question. This depends on your end goal. If you take the job at TSA, make sure you have an exit plan or else you will get stuck.
My advice is this, continue exploring career options, look into starting a business if you don't like working for other people, but have a game plan in mind. Once you get a final job you can decide what you want to do then.

Thanks for the informative video. Well done! I speak Arabic fluently and I have MA in teaching English as a second language. I got a job offer with TSA. My goal is to work with immigration. Do I have to be in the system to be able to work with immigration? Do you advise me to accept the job offer to be able to transfer to another job in the future? Thanks again
You don't have to be a fed in order to get a job with US immigration. US Immigration is one of the hardest agencies to get into because they rarely hire anyone from outside of the agency. You can accept the job with TSA but you need an exit strategy or else you're going to end up getting stuck. You can work for any agency and then transfer to a different one as long as you qualify for the job and give a convincing interview.

I’m currently doing my sf86 form and it’s so frustrating the amount of information they need. Working at tsa is definitely a stepping stone for me. It would be my first federal job and I’m hoping to get plenty of experiences there so later on I can move to bigger and better. Idk what that is as yet though.
It’s a long process but the the system will save your info so it’s less work over time.
Hi, thanks for all of your videos. I am scheduled to take my CBT in 2 days, however I have been reading a lot of different people writing that being on antidepressants will automatically disqualify me medically. any insight on this ? am I waisting my time moving forward? thanks in advance.
No this will not eliminate you from the process at all. The rule of thumb about all federal employment is: don't answer questions you weren't asked.
I worked with a few people that had mental illnesses and were on medication. There was never an issue and no one really even knew until they talked about it openly.

Is starting pay negotiable if you have experience working with the x-ray screening machines? I used to calibrate the machines for my previous employer as a security officer, I also have 8 years of military security experience.
You will not be able to negotiate your pay. I would recommend going into security consulting with a federal contractor like Booze-Allen or G4S.
If you’re still under age 37 you can try for federal law enforcement if that interests you. TSA will be low stress job and you can move into other areas of DHS quickly with your military experience.
I am applying to use this as a stepping stone. I really want to work with Immigration and go to law school. I have a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and Master’s Degree in Forensic Science High Technology Crime. I currently work with IRS , just started as Contact Representative. However, I am seasonal full time.
TSO is permanent instead of seasonal.Just concerned for our safety while we work with the public( if a customer becomes very irritated).

My advice if you’re asking…you have way too many things going on. I would pick one and focus on that. Either focus on the stepping stone and then work your way up or go to law school and work in private practice or find a law firm. I too had the same plan and thought of going to law school after I was hired by immigration. I later decided against it and just focused on building from immigration. It worked out well for me. Since you already have work experience I would focus on building your law school application. I have friends who are in immigration private practice and they clear about $5k-$8k minimum per client. Better to be and entrepreneur then to be on someone else’s payroll. Good luck with your career and law school. You’ll do well.
I’d say go through with the process, get hired and work till you get into law school. I worked with someone who went to law school and worked part-time at TSA. When he graduated and passed his bar he quit TSA and leveled up. Sounds like you have a great resume going. Hey!! I’m actually finishing my BS now and going through the process of becoming a TSO. I plan on getting my MA in Emergency Management. What steps should I take other than education to land a job as a program analyst? Or any type of role similar to that within DHS?

Your BS will be more than enough to get you started, after that you wont need anything else. If you get a job with the BS, there’s no need for a MA unless your agency is willing to help you pay for school.

You can transfer easily to CBP, you don’t get priority over others if you work at TSA. You don’t need to wait to get hired by CBP, just apply to CBP as soon the next vacancy pops up. You have to watch USAJOBS every 3-4 days. I also post those job openings on my channel.

Hey, I’m about to start training here in NYC, what are some of the other career choices I could transfer into without a degree (I took a break from college) ?
You can qualify for inspector jobs, supervision, adjudications officer, mission support, analyst type jobs. For majority of the jobs you will either need work experience or you can substitute experience with your education. A Degree is not required, but it helps.
I would recommend completing the degree because some hiring managers do tend to have a biased in favor of degrees. That is a long explanation as to why, so I'll make a video for you.

There’s no set minimum time for how long you should be with any agency, once you get hired start looking into federal management roles immediately.

How long after you get hired on can you apply to other agencies? My goal is to land an immigration career. 1. No waiting period as long as the job is open to all members of the public. You can start applying even if you’re not working for the TSA. The mistake I made and that other people make is thinking the TSA is a gateway to other jobs. It’s not, it’s just another job but it gives you some income and time to learn the federal hiring processes.
2. Any and all skills will always help. There is no ideal candidate that immigration hires. I worked with a guy who was a former Boeing engineer and was laid off, another was a former IT specialist and lost his job when the .com bubble burst. My friend is a retired Army Lt. Col and used to be a helicopter pilot. Another person was a former semi-truck driver.

My question is this how does that transfer actually work if your a TSO and try to transfer to cbp will they again run your background even though your already inside the federal system as a TSO? Just apply for the job as normal and go through the hiring process. You’ll need a higher security clearance so DHS will do you investigation over again.
I am 45 and in the Eligibility Pool. I have no intentions of moving to another job, but maybe. I just want a good career and benefits for next 20+ years. I’m not educated, nor have much experience outside of residential construction.
Yea you’ll be fine, they job is really easy and low stress, just hit cruise control and ride it out to retirement.

I just did the proctored assesment online, and I didn't pass. I failed most in the 2D % 3D section. Any sugestion where to practice for the assesment??
I think you can retake it in 6 months
In the last 3 months or so the test has changed. Only thing I can recommend is looking up 2D and 3D spatial practice tests online. I can’t make a video on it till I know more about what the test is like.
It’s not easy to get into Custom Border Patrol as that test is way more harder than the TSA test.
The test is so bad, in my opinion. It’s the poly that’ll get you..

Would you say it is a good job to do full time while in law school part time?
Yes, as long as management is willing to work around your school and clerkship schedules.
Two of my co-workers at the time were in law school as well. Once they passed the Bar, one move in to a Fed attorney job and the other went to corporate law.

I joined the TSA after getting laid off from my insurance job. Now I’m worried that I’m trapped here; if I leave, then I’m not taking advantage of the opportunity being in the FED provides me. But if I stay, I’ll be miserable and never move up.
So please tell me that there are more non-fed career paths for former TSOs other than becoming a cop.

To honestly answer this, I don’t know. I haven’t worked with nor seen anyone that is wheelchair bound.
Instead of applying to be a checkpoint blue shirt (TSO), look into desk jobs. They pay more, way less stressful, and you get normal working hours instead of going to work random hours of the way.
Hey this is imperative what kind of shoes do you recommend using for a full shift at TSA? At least 3 to 5 pair's of shoes during the week.

I wore these but I got mine from Walmart or DSW, I forgot. I only wore one pair and I let them air out after work. I was also broke back then so I couldn’t afford much. 2 good pairs will do you fine but it depends on your needs. I also got some sole inserts for more support. Make sure to stand in the cushion mats or else the concrete floors will tear up your back

You can still leave to a different position within the federal government. It's all about how you leverage your experience.
Since I had your job before I know exactly how to market your experience and jobs you'd be an excellent fit for.
I can make suggestions but I need to know what other experience you have a well. Yes you have TSA, but I know you have other qualifications as well that you developed from other jobs or positions you held in the past.

How long after the medical examination do you found out if you passed and what is the next step after medical? When going through the hiring process for TSA
If you passed then you won’t hear anything at all. There is no specific order in which the steps are completed. Once you complete all the steps you will be sent to the ready pool.

Give them time to process the form. The government moves very slowly. You can always try to contact them. I never had to deal with selective service issues so this is new to me.

I subscribed. I have a few questions.. How long after working for tsa can I apply to be an immigration officer? Also what level of education must I have to be an immigration officer?
You can apply day 1 or you can even apply now. Immigration is hiring right now, my office in DC will be picking up close to 100 people over the course of 1 year. There is no educational requirement, but you can use education as a substitute for experience which is what I did when I left TSA. There is no time obligation to remain at any one agency, you can switch at any time for any reason.
Are you saying TSA pays for you to attend FLETC & doesn't require you to stay at least 1 year? TSA pays all that money for training & allows you to leave less than a year?

Over time is available, you can make more than the base pay, salary is capped but you will never hit that cap at TSA. At other agencies you will hit the cap often.

Yes you can look for jobs in the 1801 series or anything with “analyst” in the title. Also look for jobs with investigator in the title.

Short answer is Yes. They recruit from TSA as well. I was in the Air Marshall pipeline till hiring got shut down after the program came under investigation and they started cleaning house. I was working at TSA at the time.
The TSA is what you make of it. It can be a stepping stone, dead end or just a place holder. It's all about how proactive you are.

you don't need law enforcement experience to be an air marshal.
Are you saying you want to do law enforcement related work without holding a sworn position?
@@theTSAguy I would love to do police work and be a sworn officer. But I can't join my local PD due to their current uncorrected vision requirements. I am also 40 years old so I don't have a lot of options with doing law enforcement. Is there anything that you know of that would be police like work that TSA is a stepping stone for? From what I read it sounded like Air Marshals needed LE experience, I thought I read the same about K9 handlers as well.

OK I see what you mean. You don't need LEO experience for any of that. As long as you pass the written exams, write a convincing resume, and give a half way decent interview you can get hired.
LEO type jobs without having LEO experience would be investigative assistant, investigative analyst, fraud investigator, fraud analyst, etc...
Go to USAJobs and search "Investigator" in the keywords.
What if you were let go from TSA can you still get hired for another Government Job?
Define “let go”, we’re you fired or you didn’t pass training?

There is no binary answer to this question. It all depends on what your employment qualifications are and your long term goals. Evaluate your long term career goals, weigh the pros/cons and career growth ability of both jobs and then make your decision.

How long is the typical hiring process as far as timeline
Mine was 22 months, as of mid-2021 it’s been about 8 months on average. Just depends on how fast your airport is hiring and badly they need people

I applied for TSA and took my exam, but I’m pretty sure I failed. The new CBT test with the 2D to 3D imaging messes with me. I can match some edges just find, other edges my mind simply can’t comprehend. You have to do the test completely in your head as you are given no paper nor can you request any. Then again who knows, I never received my test score and it’s been over a week. I wish they would go back to the Xray test, at least that test makes sense. And the fact that if you fail the test twice you can never become a TSA agent is rather stupid, considering that TSA is really hurting for people to work all across the US. Imagine if they did that with the military lol, our armed forces would be nonexistent.
CAN tsa agent after a certain year transfer to CBP ?
You can apply for different job from day 1. There is no waiting period.
Failed the medical exam because my left ear was clogged 🙃
I wouldn't sweat it too much, see if they will let you do it again. I don't focus on just TSA, but more federal hiring in general. So stick around for more videos.

Yes, you can wear a hat but only if you're working in baggage or outside, but not on the check point.

I've never worked for the post office, this decision is going to depend on what your end goal is. Which ever job you take make sure you go in with an exit plan or else you're going to get stuck there. Both jobs have they're positive and negative attributes.

You don’t need to get past probation to change agencies.

TSA is horrible and other agencies (CBP FBI Ect) think your a joke when they see TSA on your resume. private security companies think TSA agents are like borderline law enforcement so that's your best chance at outside work. pat down skills and ID checks is a joke. your better off doing any stress free side job while you wait for a real career job!!!!!
I was at TSA till I transferred to immigration. I’m a GS-13 senior officer in DC. Just because you start some place does not mean you have to get stuck there. Career growth is a mindset, operating from a place of anger is not beneficial to anyone.

yes but TSA does not offer the same benefits or pay scale system like the other legit government agencies. also nobody stays in TSA there whole careers because most quit
There’s people that have been there since 2003 and they enjoy it. The pay and compensation for TSA will be changing this June. They get a 30% pay raise, pay scale will change and the benefits package is getting upgraded to match the rest of the fed.

Hi, I have a question hopefully you are able to help me. I got an email about sf86 form but when I create an account I need a code. I didn’t receive one and I tried contacting the help desk but they haven’t answered. I only have 21 days to fill it out or it will terminate my application. I’m worried :(
I made my sf86 account 10 years ago. I think I just created the account and a code. Try to create an account and let me know what happens. I'm making a Facebook group where you will be able to ask other people as well.
@@theTSAguy it says I need a registration code to create an account, contact the agency sponsoring. It sucks because it’s all through email which takes forever and they only gave me 21 days. I looked online to see if other people are having the same issue unfortunately I don’t have Facebook so my search is limited.
🤦🏽♂️ you're going to need the code then. They should have sent both emails at the same time. Unfortunately you're dealing with a very disorganized agency. I had a lot of problems getting my sf86 through when I applied. Send them another email but I would keep trying to contact them. Some will respond to you
This is a long shot but try hitting TSA up on Twitter and tell them what's going on. That's a good way to get their attention. They watch their Twitter feed.
