    I'm in South America, and after reading and trying everything, I was able to fix idle correctly, not dying when turning all the way down.. The key rest in the side lower/faster knob.. It's basically a stopper for your throttle..
    So first, do you carb adjustment..
    Then, put tape in your cam roller so is thicker and grabs the worn "link and sync" plate that we all have.. It's a bad design and that's why it won't accelerate much in neutral or reverse.. After you do all that, adjust your side knob to the point where your motor idles correctly and it doesn't let your throttle go lower..
    I think this is the way :)

    Thanks buddy. I have exact same issue with my 76 9.9 Evinrude. Finally just said screw it and I don't lower speed past a certain spot. Happy boating and fishing brother.

    That spot that you think is the idle section of the cam, is actually the spot that the butterfly in the carburetor opens up... Just FYI

  • @VanBui-mz6id
    @VanBui-mz6id 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Try wrapping the Cam Follower with some electrical/duct tape to thicken it; that will give you some throttle leeway. I had the same issue as you and was able to resolve it as such. G'luck.

    I believe the idle is set at the mark and you can go lower past the mark for your low idle/troll speed, set the idle then your lean/rich mixture knob is for the low idle/troll speed

      What's stopping the throttle is the red guy on the vertical throttle bar, I just snapped the tabs off mine hasn't seemed to be an issue

    Man you're throttle gear the one next to the advance rod,not the one on tiller theone closest to engine block is partially seised all that screeching is bad .
    Try getting those inside linkages operating smoothly before they cause you any further problems.
    Hey great video way to dive right in there that's half the battle

    i have 2 of these motors and i work on em alot.
    start with the basics my man. Clean your carbs, maybe a new fuel pump or rebuild.
    Also its possible youve damage the needle vavle(slow speed). Hand tight it till it doesnt snug no more and back off maybe 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Also the idle adjustment knob on the side will help you alot from it dying on you. Once youve fix the fuel issue. I would start looking into the Carb rebuild and Fuel pump.
    i love these old motors they last forever and easy to work on.

    • @markbuilds
      @markbuilds  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are great, I did the carb and fuel pump a few months back. Not saying I didn’t miss something, but the motor idles fine. The problem is that I can turn the throttle too low and I guess it starves it of fuel.

    • @natesok209

      @@markbuilds oh ok got cha, then that is normal. thats why there is that knob on the side so it can stop you from turning throttle to low.

    That lean rich needle your adjusting should be at least 1 and a half turns out from lightly seated and the black knob on the side of the motor is the idle adjustment turn in to speed up or out to slow down your idle

  • @jerryprice6414

    The idle speed adjustment is the knob on the side.

    • @jerryprice6414
      @jerryprice6414 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      To adjust the timing there is a set screw on the carb roller. You adjust the set screw until the carb butterfly just starts to open when the roller is even with the timing mark on the throttle ramp. To adjust the lean rich knob pull the knob off then screw it all the way in. Now turn it out 3/4 of a turn put the knob back on with the pointer in the center this should get you in the proper range. Hope this helps.

      It adjusts how low your motor will idle before stalling. Air/Fuel mixture screw adjusts how much air to fuel ratio is going into your engine

    • @markbuilds
      @markbuilds  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rich/lean adjusts air fuel mix into the engine. Set that while moving at an idle on the water. You’ll be able to tell when you go to far one way cause the motor will start to die. Idle adjust just adjusts the stop point for the throttle turning.

    I see you having trouble with ya mixture needle. I went by my manual which says screw the needle all the way in the back it out 1 and a half turns and that is your starting point to have it idle, you may need to adjust a half turn either direction but that is the starting point never run the needle all th me way in and almost in and leave it, I hope this helps and you have probably found that out by now lol, good video man I enjoyed it I really hope I could help

    • @markbuilds

      Mark Builds a lot of times when the needle get bottomed out or screwed all the way in it will flare the tip and cause crappy air flow, did you get it idling like you wanted or close enough to be happy with it?

      @@markbuilds Definitely worth a carb rebuild and cleaning, I saw you have the service manual, it is worth it to check what factory recommendation is ie. 2 turns out for the idle air screw and go from there , tightening it down all the way will just kill it. You need to get it at factory settings , put the plastic adjustment knob back on and play with it from there. I had a similar issue with a 6hp . Need to know what it does before playing with it.

    hola amigo, tu problema es que en marcha mínima el motor se atrasa tanto que se apaga, debes ajustar la perilla lateral hasta que tope con el brazo vertical, justo en la marca donde esta la leva de aceleración. Nunca dijistes como esta la compresión del motor, esto es muy importante en estos motores de 2 tiempos. Gracias y lamento no dar esta explicación en Ingles. Tengo varios motores de este tipo y son excelentes,

    • @markbuilds

      I guess I could have checked compression, but never thought that to be an issue! Thanks for the suggestion with the side knob, I think mine might have been broken somehow, it was not able to screw in far enough to make it to the point it needed to.

      Hola amigo, podrías explicarme mejor eso que comentas.
      Yo acabo de comprar uno de estos, y ha estado bien cuidado, lo único es que el ralenti en mínimo se apaga y para que no pase hay que mover un poco el acelerador, lo malo es que para no pasarme mantengo la tapa abierta para calcular.
      Podrías explicarme eso que comentas, te agradecería mucho. Otra cosa es que la perilla no tiene la goma negra y estoy pensando en hacerle una.

      @@eduardoyanez7282 hola amigo, no aún no he resuelto el problema del ralentí, lo que hago es prenderlo en neutro un minuto para que caliente y luego lo apago pongo la marcha y lo enciendo así para arrancar (lo hago así porque como no agarra ralentí entonces prende un poco acelerado, por ende no le meto la marcha así para evitar dañar los engranajes, es un poco tedioso pero por ahora es lo que he estado haciendo hasta que logre resolver eso).
      Yo gradué la perilla del acelerador derecha para que el acelerador no baje más de la cuenta, pero en el punto ese queda un poco acelerado y si lo bajo no aguanta el ralentí.
      Creo puede ser carburación ya que todo lo demás está bien, incluso el motor tiene bastante compresión en ambos cilindros y pareja, corriente bien y lo único es ese detalle del ralentí que no logro se mantenga allí.
      En una semana me traerán las bujías champions que lleva ese motor (creo son L78V o algo así) a ver si con las bujías que indica el fabricante se corrige, pero sino tendré que mirar por el carburador a ver si por allí está el detalle.
      Agradezco cualquier consejo amigo. +584248374240 ese es mi WhatsApp por si quieres escribirme por allí.

    Blocked carbureter the idle circuit is blocked it should start on 'start' setting on throttle i have 5hp johnson twin cyclinder it starts and idles fine fuel is clean and carb is cleaned regularly..
    Also jet us avery fine point andvend can break off meaning it does not adjust often a fault on 80s motorcycles...
