Great comparison video. But seriously, charging twice a day, that would drive me crazy, no thanks, I'll stick with my Garmin lasting a week or more. A watch belongs on the wrist , not on the charger.

You are so right! I just switched from apple watch 7 to the fenix 7 for that reason. The apple watch is (almost) great in the eco system and all those apps and features, but if you leave your phone behind and use LTE, plus stream some music and then start a workout with GPS tracking, the battery dies on you in no time. I found myself SO many times with an empty watch on my wrist that wouldn't even tell me what time it is anymore. And a device that drains the battery so much, naturally has so many charging cycles that the capacity decreases rapidly. After one year with the apple watch 7 I had only about 70% capacity left even though I was trying hard to avoid the battery dying on me and stuff.
I was tempted to actually get the garmin instinct 2 rather than the fenix for its battery life, but I like the maps features for checking out new routes.

@@joerrebroet I have an apple watch 7 and a similar experience. I think mine was at 84% after 1 year. Apple thinks it's totally normal to lose 1-2% of battery capacity per month and just doesn't care. I lose 3-4 runs per month and when the watch goes down, it's such a distraction.

Great video! I consider myself a top AG triathlete and used to be a varsity distance runner. I had the Epix for about 2 months, but the hype around the AWU was so much that I returned the Epix (60 days return policy) and bought the AWU. After about 6 weeks, I missed the Epix so much that I sold the AWU at a loss (the 2 weeks return policy sucks) and bought the Fenix 7SS. My main issues with the AWU were the battery life, not being able to use the watch without the touch screen (especially when wearing gloves), all the health data (sleep score, training status, body battery, etc.), and how hard it was to create a workout on the watch. On top of that, I was getting a lot of shit from my friends for wearing an Apple watch instead of a Garmin (all of them national level athletes). Sure the smart features of the Apple watch are on another level, but I always have my phone on me unless I'm at the pool or running with friends.

i did the same thing... i hade the Fenix 7x - returned it after about 2 months for the AWU.. just to realise i hated the battery life of it and the screen.. screen has auto brightness that the user dont have any controll over.. even when putting it on the lowest brightness the watch auto brightens itself when there is light around it (even indoors), cousing it burn battery for no reason.. and turning off the always on is not an option. Touchscreen is useless when working out or if wet... so i returned the AWU and now have the tactix 7 with the nylon strap..

I have my Garmin 6X Pro watch since round about 6 weeks and exchanged it for my Apple Watch series 6. I was annoyed by Apple to put out an Apple Watch with better battery life to start at 900€. Yes, I understand, it is titanium and great materials, but why didn‘t they produce it with aluminium? this was my main reason to - at least try out a Garmin watch to understand the differences and find out by myself what could be my way to go.
I did a lot of sports the last 10 years, but mainly too much and there is a very professional way on the garmin to … well … prevent this by the body battery and the other features of the watch. So for the moment, I don‘t even miss my apple watch, as my phone is with me anyways and I like the offline maps and route calculation feature of my fenix 6 (like give me a 10km hike in my area - great feature!).

Hard to create a workout? Are you kidding me? Have you tried workoutdoors app? It is the best app I've ever used. I was using Garmin for 4 years or so and changed for AWU. It was the best decision ever. Charging every 50 hours with 2 workouts while listening to Spotify.

I think if you plan to move outdoors you propably want Garmin rather than AWU. There is nothing more annoying than touch screen you cant use because gloves or because it raining like hell. Those buttons really matter in rough weather and save your day. I am myself getting Garmin. I do have AW 9 but I found it quite lacking because that and because I find apple health information bit confusing.

Great video, I've been rocking the Apple Watch SE, I do a lot of hiking and mountain biking/road cycling. I've been doing some research on whether to go with a Garmin Fenix/Epix or upgrade to the AWU. I enjoyed how much you covered between the two watches it was very educational. I think I'll go with the AWU because of the integration with my iphone. I also love having the cellular so I don't have to bring my phone when I go ride or want to unplug during a hike! I do think if your doing ultramarathons, adventure racing, backpacking, thru hiking, and long endurance sports a Garmin is the better choice.

It was a tough choice but the battery life, & fitness stuff like body battery edged it for me on Garmin & the stuff I miss off AW is ‘smart’ stuff like Apple Pay, turning my lights on & off, & a phone if I forget to pick mine up! I sure don’t miss the AW battery life. However I don’t think either is perfect on its own yet.. 👍🏻

I've had nearly every series of the AW and switched over to the Gamin Crossover for full-time use. I used the Garmin for training, and now prefer it for monitoring my overall health/fitness. The Garmin still gets notifications, etc. The AW advantage is mostly voice to text and cellular for me. Beyond that... I don't like being locked into my iPhone for everything. Data accessibility has been pretty important to me as well and Garmin delivers that for me. I also like to share location travels with friends/family and the AW doesn't do that well in my experiences.

Been an Apple Watch guy since they were released, but when it came time for a new one this year I decided on the Tactix 7 Pro instead of the AWU. I had some second thoughts when initially setting it up and learning how to use it since it’s so different (and definitely less polished overall) but I haven’t regretted it a single day since then.
The Apple Watch is hands down the better ‘smart’ watch, but the Garmin wins as a health/fitness tracker IMO. The battery life alone was the convincing factor for me, I charge it when I shower and that’s it, it stays between 85-100% pretty much all the time and knowing I could go 2+ weeks without charging if necessary is great. The charging ritual that comes along with the Apple Watch is exhausting in comparison.
I find the Stress, Body Battery, and Training Status, and Morning Summary features on the Garmin to be far more useful day-to-day data points than anything I ever got out of my Apple Watch. Built-in topo maps and the customization of workout data screens are a big bonus too IMO.
All in, if you’re more inside than outside the Apple Watch is probably the better choice, but if you just want to get out there the Tactix 7 Pro is an excellent choice. To be fair though, they both seem like great options and I think it just comes down to what you care about, getting away from the Apple Watch charging ritual was an easy decision for me, but if they ever release a version with 1+ week battery life I could see myself switching back.

I had the AW6 and now the Fenix7X, and i must say, the ability to make my own workouts: yoga, hiit, running and so on is just amazing. I can save hiking courses and other maps on my watch. That alone will make the fenix the best watch. Because i can do all my sports without my phone. I don’t need 10 apps like you wrote in the video to do my training. This is for me a big plus. With the AWU you need to much extra apps just to do a regular training because Apple doesn’t let you do the smallest thing by your own.
The only thing that is sad, that the Fenix doesn’t have LTE. With that i would say it’s the best watch ever.

@@ShervinShares I refrain from HIIT more often. When I ignore both a low training readiness and low recovery I get hit with a time penalty of days. My challenge is, my body gets fatigued sooner, I no longer feel it as clearly, it takes longer
to recover, but especially if I overtrain. And a number of poor nights sleep will way more seriously affect recovery. So there is a much narrower window of behaviour to actually improve physically. So load and recovery time is paramount.

I main my garmin daily. However, the Apple Watch should be advertised as a wrist mounted gps. That feature is bananas. I bought it to navigate on my motorcycle. It boggles my brain that a gps king like garmin does not include any easy to use navigation.

Nicely done video and looks like the Apple Watch is perfect for your use case. In my use case there's more nature, more hiking, far less public transportation, some structured training, use of my own home gym equipment, and so on.
A key part of this is just wanting to own another mini and limited phone to get away from either a gigantic phone or some of the use cases on those phones. I've enjoyed all your videos but before you sell off your Garmin you've still never delivered any video of "A Day in the Life" with just the Garmin Watch. I'd urge you to make if just for some good content.
A lot of people obviously keep their phones with them when cycling, hiking, riding public transit and so on but Garmin has contactless payments and you do have to enter your pin.... once a day. After that you just hit your hot keys and you're fine. Garmin can have music on the watch or control your iPhone, just like the Apple Watch. I do not use my Garmin with gymkit and that feature seems to be a bit of a dead end. Garmin will broadcast HR and likewise has virtual run for programs like Zwift which I much prefer to keep treadmill runs interesting. My Garmin will broadcast my pace, cadence and HR to my iPad when I use it on the treadmill.
With regard to friction, Garmin has everything integrated on the sports tracking side. No friction there. Apple has a ton of friction because there's so many apps and subscriptions.

I have to disappoint "scientific reviews' and say that Apple Watch Ultra has the worst HR sensor and it is not just me , but a lot of guys complain on many sites about the heart rate reading dropping suddenly during a workout. I'd like to add that my Ultra HR reading is inaccurate in comparison with Garmin Fenix 7x - I tested both at the same time during one of my workout. The difference of 40 heart beats /min is self explanatory. I also tested G. Fenix 7x HR sensor reading from my wrist against a HR band around my chest during workout in Zwift app running on my Apple TV and they were the same (1 beat difference every now and then).

I have both, and the Garmin is definitely more for the elite athlete, that also requires battery life, such as hiking in the Australian outback for a few weeks. However, that said the Apple Watch Ultra is an amazing piece of technology, that provides far better smart features, while also having amazing health tracking features, and being able to leave your phone at home. If the Apple Watch Ultra had a 2 week battery life, Garmin would be in deep doo doo.

I definitely feel like if your doing ultramarathons, backpacking, thru hiking, or even triathlons the garmin's battery life and physical buttons are critical. I love my apple watch and it works for what I like to do. Occasionally I'll go on a 2 hour road ride or 90 minute mountain bike ride and I find I can use cellular with no phone, while using strava/workout doors and my battery will be fine. I do have to make sure it has a good charge before and I definitely will have to charge it afterword's but it's nice not needing my phone to stream music, make calls or texts hands free!

I had Apple Watch Ultra and I exchanged it for the Epix. Apple is getting close. They need a little more battery life and some dedicated fitness tracking software like Garmin Connect. They may get me to switch over for the second gen of the Ultra. It is nice tech but I still want more battery life. So far I'm happier with the Epix. They are both great in my opinion.

I don’t think anybody would argue that the apple watch is the best smart watch money can buy, that said serious athletes are always going to gravitate towards a garmin or likewise watch. The training features and battery life on the garmin are just better for overall fitness tracking. For the majority of people tho a garmin is a waste of time. If you spend most of the time sedentary working, then going to the gym for an hour at night or a 30 minute run the apple watch is going to bring you so much more benefit.

Weight training, treadmill walking, mini-trampoline exercise, indoor biking over many months.
