I’ve just subbed🎉 can I ask what you prefer between the fenix 7 pro solar sapphire and the epix pro Gen 2 I’m torn between the battery life of the fenix vs amoled display and low battery with potential pixel burn and battery degradation. But damn that epix screen looks beautiful. 😅
Something I rarely see discussed is longevity of the watch! Many people keep their garmin fenixes 5-10 years - I have rarely heard someone keeping an Apple device that long. In 5 years, the company had released 5 new watches, making your look obsolete.
I've used both extensively. I currently own both. I explain it to friends like this: If you want a fitness tracker get Garmin. If you want a smart watch (smart phone on your wrist) get Apple. I stopped wearing my Apple watch and use Garmin exclusively. (specifically I use the Garmin Venu 3) When it comes to fitness tracking, Garmin is just leagues ahead of Apple. Garmin has all the data you could ever ask for and more that you didn't ask for, the watch is designed around displaying the data, the app is focused on displaying that data. Garmin doesn't extend your phone's apps like the Apple watch does, it focuses on fitness and that's it. If you want to wear a watch to be an extension of your iPhone, then you want an Apple watch. For me, the Garmin's singular focus on fitness and intentionally separating it from your phone is actually a feature not a bug. I don't want to be more connected to my phone, I am trying to use my phone less. Garmin tracks my fitness better, is easier to use, less "silly" and more practical. Apple does lots of "cute" things with the weird array of app icons that you wade through to find an app, it has gamification for steps with your friends, and other gamification features. But Apple really is limited on what it does when it comes to actually fitness data outside the basics. In the end, the Garmin app has loads and loads of data for you to dive into. For training athletes, make sure to get an HRM-Tri or HRM-Run heart rate monitor and it gives you other more detailed stats that they call "running dynamics" which includes stride length, ground contact time, foot balance, and just tons of other ridiculous stats. The garmin is functional. Runners can use it for pacing in either speed or heart rate zones so it alerts you when you leave a zone. You can fully customize every single screen. You can add more, reduce them. You can cram lots of data on a screen or go minimalist. It just has so much customization. Also, the data is readily available on the website, you can add routing, it has just so many features. The apple watch is nice, but just can't give you anywhere near the data of the Garmin.
@Wassup-Doc none of these devices are super accurate. Not even the heart monitor. To recover performance of the workout they both test very close. But like the above person said depends on your life style and what you’re aiming for with the watch. I prefer to have a hands free phone/fitness tracker. If I was into triathlons and what not I would go with a Garmin. Unless you have a full on heart Monitor with all the wires attached to your body all of these devices are just a snippet of what you’re burning. If you’re counting calories your best bet is to go into a calorie deficit not rely on calories burned. You can use both too which can be effective as well however the most accurate one would be to go into a calorie deficit.
I would agree with some of your points but the update to the Garmin app has changed things, the new layout is a huge downgrade in my opinion, Garmin claims it is completely customizable but I would characterize it as structured customization because it is limited to what Garmin has deemed important for its users whereas the old version was completely customizable by the user. The website has been destroyed, the dashboards are gone and it now looks like the app. The new layout has been designed for the Garmin users who complained that the app and website were too complicated and too data rich, it seems to me that it is more focused on the the lifestyle users rather than those who are serious about the data. Garmin's sleep data is known for being poor as well. This is affects their other metrics such as recovery and their body battery. Garmin is great at tracking activities but most runners and cyclists I know send their info to Strava/Training Peaks and only rely on Garmin Connect to upload data. The watches are amazing but the software is severely lacking and has been for years. I wouldn't discount Apple. It is a great option because you have access to a plethora of apps to use to make the watch do what works for you, from the lifestyle user to the serious athlete. With 2-3 apps you can absolutely get everything and even more than you can with a Garmin, save the battery life.
@@isstiautngmmhpaatta91311 I agree wholeheartedly. Just this morning I was bitching about the new app. Huntington for my run, trying to find my sleep data, none of the shit I want to see is forefront. I don’t get it. Regardless i have an Epix coming today lol
Definitely agree I also had the Apple ultra, I’ve had my Garmin fenix 7 sapphire solar for 3 weeks now and I love it it’s not left my wrist I can’t ever see me going back to Apple anytime soon and Garmin connect app works fine with my iPhone and for running it’s so much better in my opinion especially as I’m doing a few ultra marathons next year so I don’t have to worry about battery life anymore as I did with the Apple ultra.
I got a Garmin Forerunner about 4 months ago since I was getting more into running. It replaced my Apple Watch 8 and for the first few weeks I missed all the smart watch features but now I love all the fitness tracking and integration with Garmin and the great battery life!
Cheers. Precisely. Forerunner is really all you need. Honestly , I'm willing to treat myself to an Enduro 2. But for what?! Everything I need is on the Forerunner 45. Anything close to a 1000 dollars on a watch is just for "vanity" reasons. Lets get real here.
Only thing I would add to that is I recently bought the 965 (it was on sale £420 over Easter) and it has maps, which was important to me. I could bring myself to spend double on the epix. For the most part 55/165 would do the job
I bought a Forerunner 255 and been using it for the last couple of weeks for runs and workouts. Great bit of kit for £220! Beats the old Nike apple watch I used to have all day.
The only smart watch features I use anyway is the weather and notifications :D and I get them on my Garmin. I have used Garmin fitness products since the roadbike computer Edge 205, and Forerunner 50 and now I use a 735xt since many years, and it does everything I need. I get all data I want. I also have a Edge 1030+ bike computer and the run+ heart rate strap. All these devices cost me almost the same as my Samsung Watch 4 which.... sucks in all ways. Bad heartrate monitor, really bad batterylife (my Garmin usually gives me 14 days of battery), the software sucks for Samsung, (well new Garmin Connect is bad also in user interface but still same functions, but I hope they revert to old design soon)
Congratulations on your 3:30 marathon in London, amazing accomplishment! I agree with you bro, and have now switched from AW Ultra to a Garmin Epix, paired with a chest strap. I do Crossfit most days and Trail run on the weekends in the mountains, I have appreciated the increase in battery life and the physical buttons for precise start/stop/lap times, with the always on screen instead of having to wrist raise during a workout to glance. Garmin is workout/training first, smartwatch is an afterthought, AW is opposite.
an argument I want to make regarding the Garmin is although the charging method isn't as convenient or nice, you do only have to do it once every two weeks (depending on use), in a way it evens out with an every day charge with the apple watch. This charging method is also vital for activities such as hiking and trekking, using a cable to directly send power to the device is more efficient than using wireless, something crucial when power is limited. Also worth mentioning that these Garmin watches can have maps and music installed locally, with the details these maps contain they need a cabled transfer for updates. (I have a fenix 6 pro and although the batteries not in it's prime anymore it's still a champ).
Agreed. With the Apple Watch you need to have charging stations strategically set up in different places, where with the Garmin watches you really just need the one cable in one place (for me its my desk) because you never get caught short on battery
@@alexdrum94 if your going off the chart on the website all the values given are while the device is on and receiving 50k lux for only 3 hours, the watch can charge while fully powered off so all it’s doing is charging you can easily get a day or 2 if it’s turned off fully, in direct sunlight
I crossed the Grand Canyon, in one day, 12 hours, with the Apple Watch, and had plenty of power left. Last ultra I ran, used the Apple Watch Ultra, streaming music, acting as a cell phone, over 5 hrs and still had 40%. Just saying, Garmin still has better battery life, but having a cell phone on my wrist, is very nice, when I move to a 100 miler, I may switch but until then, I’ll keep my ultra.
@@ShervinShares sorry this is not a good comparison. You dont talk about accuracy of the data and just that both provide a lot of data. Reading about sleep tracking of garmin it is garbage and basically random numbers at this point. I don't know about other metrics because i have not done enough research on them. But talking about data accuracy matters. Otherwise it is just an advertisement of the product and not a review.
I've been using a Garmin Fenix for 18 months. The charging cable was a pain to start with, but now I have a cable permanently connected to my computer ready on my desk and it's simple to plug in and charge. When I'm away, I bought a small USB adaptor, and that works great, but having had a 'smart watch' before, the convenience of not having to charge nearly every day is great.
I've had my Garmin Fenix 3 sapphire for many years, doing 40 mile walks and taking it to the Himalayas multiple times above 5700 metres.... it has never let me down....
Super video. A couple of additions: Using Garmin and AW Ultra at the same time for more than a month without heart rate straps, I had to skip the Garmin reacting way too slowly during HIIT sessions, and therefore not getting near real max heart rate and effort. I don’t need a strap with AW where it was required with Garmin . AW Ultra was way better at counting my 24h energy use than Garmin focusing on training sessions. I found the Training today App with AW set to detect afib for more frequent meassurements, very closely matched Garmin training readiness, but also include the effect of hard effort outside traning sessions on those days. So with AW I don’t have to clock everything.
@@highlanderes I use a chest strap for every activity. Wrist based monitors will never be more accurate than a chest strap. I just want the most accurate data for a workout.
Try wearing the watches on the underside of your wrist when running. Makes it easier to view the screen without having to rotate your arm and shoulder as much while running. All you have to do is basically look down at your palms and it’s easy to view. Heart rate monitoring still works.
Thanks for the video! One thing worth mentioning- you can set up Shortcuts on your paired iPhone to automatically set water lock on your Apple Watch when you start a workout. Can even customize it to be just for certain workout types.
Sold my AWU in the end, and went back to Garmin Fenix 7x. The Garmin is much better for fitness/health tracking in the Connect app. The AWU was amazing, but it was only really used for cellular when on a run, otherwise I always had my phone.
Apple fanboy here. Love these types of comparisons as it shows where the Apple Watch can still get better. One callout is that you can create a shortcut to enable the water lock on your watch when starting/ending a workout. Good luck with the training!
@@cp37373 not really. I don’t like to carry phone during my run. Yes I get some some don’t want to be disturbed, but I like the fact that I can still decide to take important calls, get Siri to set reminders or events when I remembered something during my run. At this point they are still apples and oranges, pros and cons for each. I do have Garmin too, which I will wear during overseas travel, as AW roaming still doesn’t work in many countries, so the major advantage of AW is gone.
I prefer Apple Watch Ultra 2. But only because it suit my needs very well. - NFC payment - Train tickets - Call, text and mail reply - Bluetooth to AirPods - Spotify - Maps - Calculator and Calendar Apple is trying to make it so it use web browser by using websites search with Siri, it need a bit work but it gives a lot and I almost never use my phone or have it with me.😌😌 So with that hardware I think it’s impressive it can hold me 2,5 to 3 days🤓🍀 But if I’m hiking for a week I would have phone and garmin with me
If those are your needs, then the apple watch is definitely better. Garmin watches are for fitness tracking only and for fitness enthusiasts and it does it a lot better than apple
Honestly I am surprised that Garmin still uses such an outdated interface. It feels like they ignored the last 15 years of UI development. Imagine a watch that combines the guts of Garmin and the interface of apple. That's a watch I would like to see
Yep, Apple is a techie's watch, Garmin is a runner's watch. Who pays attention to how modern a UI is, all athletes care about is how it helps them improve! It's not like the Garmin is not functional or practical, it is, more than the Apple.
It's true but Apple's budget for UI design is probably 1000x what garmins is, maybe more? Lol. IMO no on can really come close to Apple's UI designs, that's a huge strength for them and maybe their biggest tbh.
@@AlexanderKaye-u3y No one need a touch screen UI when actually running. My biggest gripe is the lack of auto pause for hiking on the Ultra which drives me insane - as I always forget to restart my paused hike after lunch.
Whether something it outdated or not is irrelevant. The car wheel as an interface hasn't changed since it was invented in 1885, but it works better than newer things like yokes. The Garmin interface is fast and efficient for what it was designed to do- more efficient than the Apple interface as this video demonstrates. I'm sure there are ways the Garmin interface could be improved, but it's not by adopting Apple's 2D bubble layout. The Garmins were designed to track activities. The Apple watches were designed to host a lot of apps. The both do that well.
I have the ultra 2 on one wrists and Garmin 265 on the other. I hate wearing both though. Just so everyone knows I saw another video also talking a lot about buttons and I’m surprised no one mentions this. The video I saw in another post said how easy Garmin is to start a workout. It is, but you can push the side crown of an Apple Watch and just say, Start an outdoor run and when your finished either say, “hey siri stop workout” or push the crown and say say “stop workout” and no need to even say “hey siri”.
Tip for checking if the hr monitor is connected. Start the workout and just slightly lift the watch to see if the leds are off. No need to go an check if the hr is connected in settings. Also I have not encountered a case where the HR wouldn’t connect automatically yet
I’ve used the Ultra and Garmin and have been a Garmin user for 20+ years. I still prefer the Garmin; in my opinion, if you’re a serious user, Garmin or similar watches like it (Coros, etc.) are the way to go.
I loved my Apple but I prefer my Garmin. Also, if you set up your Garmin on your home WiFi it will sync when you’re at home without the app. Meaning it will upload to Strava by itself too. Not as quickly as opening the app but it works.
I had successive Garmin's. You just reminded me of the 1980's style charging routine. I had to angle it, fix it in place, use pliers on the cable connector, buy new cables... What a pain...
I just returned my Apple ultra and got myself Garmin 7 pro. Few reasons : 1) Apple sleep doesn’t update right after you wake up. It doesn’t realize you woke up and it takes at least 10- 50 Min) . Garmin as soon as you wake up it gives you morning report and if you do go back to sleep it counts in your nap. 2) Apple doesn’t have recovery score like Garmin and whoop does. Few things I miss about Apple is using Spotify , and calls on watch and using siri on iwatch. I used Siri more with watch than on my phone. Mainly having owner 2 watch few years ago and having owned Garmin fenix 6 and 245. Apple ages very quickly (after 2-3 years )because of its amazing screen. Where as Garmin screens are MIP so it ages very slow and it still works like brand new after 4-5 year.
I am literally just starting off on my running journey, 6 weeks in and I found your channel and Nick Bare's and have been obsessed with all of the info you both provide. I have an apple watch currently and have never looked at it as a great fitness watch since I have always had issues but all the details about the comparisons between Apple Vs. Garmin, I finally am making my choice to buy the Garmin Fenix 7 watch. Thanks again for breaking this all down.
Why? Because of the looks? The Forerunner 955 or 965 got everything you need for running and costs less. Especially the 955 is an amazing deal at the moment.
i bought the fenix 7X SS too. im hoping to be able to get better insight on my sleep and fitness progress and i aim to finally get back into running like i used to pre-covid. yes i couldve bought one of the forerunner series and get all the features i need but i want the best possible battery life i can buy. I wish you the best for your running journey bro!
Such a difference to have to charge a watch once every day! I use a Garmin 965 and I charge it once a week, training 14h per week and never low in battery
In a perfect world, I'd train with a Garmin and daily an Ultra. I use an Ultra currently because it functions so well with the iPhone, and I personally prefer the design and band options. The worst aspect of the Ultra is the battery. It would be great if they could get it to the point where it can function fully for 2-3 days without having to charge.
There are generic brand velcro straps for Garmins that I find more comfortable and breathable. They allow you to fine tune the tightness more than a buckle, and they're easy to adjust while running.
I bought the quick fit 22 band for my new Epix Pro and love it versus the silicone band it came with. This was after using the stock silicone band on my forerunner for 2.5 years.
Lifelong runner, Garmin exclusive since 2010. Always interesting hearing about other folks running tech experiences. Also Android since 2010 (though most worn earbuds are AirPods Pro 2)
I have a Forerunner 965 and an AWU2. AWU2 is more precise with heartbeat, I discovered that Garmin was lying to me while recovering from a workout, making up 70 ish BPM when I was still at 110. That's when I decided to stop using it. Not to mention the sturdiness of the AWU2. I am a big guy and when I am in the gym I can bump into things and that could kill the Garmin. It's just so fragile. I understand the Epix and Fenix are more resistant but they have a decade old screen, responsiveness and pixel density. The AWU2 pixel density really does make a difference it stands out by FAR from the 965. Garmin watches have really bad UI and UX, and the 965 has the best screen Garmin has made so far. In my country the AWU2 holds tremendous reselling value. It wins in every scenario for me. One last thing, Apple still has the best sleep stages detection. I would never buy a Garmin watch again. I just hope Apple keeps improving the AWU.
Dude, this was an epic video! You freaking nailed it! Like nailed it. You hit every nuanced difference beginning middle and end of training or workout tracking. Holy hell that was awesome!
thank you for your insights. I switched to Garmin round about year ago prefer all these workout features - to be able to turn off the touchscreen - more than I’m missing the smart features from Apple Watch.
My AWU started shorting me on runs - I would wait until the GPS locked in and start. After about 3/4 mile I would look and it would say .10 mile. I played with many settings but nothing helped. This never happened with my old Apple Watch. So, I got a Garmin and in addition to the more accurate GPS, I really love the app and website. I can plan a route for a run and the watch will guide me through it. Also, like you mentioned, I like how the external devices link to the Garmin better. Now I wear the Apple Watch all day, and the Garmin primarily to do my running workouts.
I replaced the AWU2 with a 2019 Garmin Tactix Delta that I got with a steep discount from a local jeweller. I'm floored how much this years old watch has to offer and it makes the AWU2 look complicated and not reliably, which the video showcased.
As a subscriber to Strava, I can choose a route locally which automatically syncs with Garmin. You do not have this option with Apple Watches. That's a massive deal breaker for me and something to also consider. I'm an ultra runner who works away from home often so need to find new routes with distance. Even when home it's great to find new routes locally too in order to keep things interesting :)
they both are amazing watches ! pretty much one is more fitness and maps focused while the other is a smart watch. both amazing in there own way tbh i love my apple watch series 7
I feel you when you are working out and realizing that the watch is paused or in my case frozen. Had it happen in my swims when it says I am swimming hard just to realize later that it didn’t record any of it
Nice comparison, but regarding 11:15 the Apple Watch (I have the SE2) definitely DOES let you track your pace within intervals. Perhaps it works differently when you add workouts through training peaks, but I set my my intervals with pace ranges in custom workouts and the first screen always lets me know my interval pace/distance, and the other screens let me see the total distance and other metrics. Just fyi :)
As someone who works at Garmin (Aviation department, however), I'm happy to see that these products still excel in what they were designed for. The Apple watch is amazing as a daily wrist-phone; super smart and capable, and will handle your workouts with little issue. The Garmin watches were designed with athletes in mind, focused on accuracy and reliability, while having a few nice-to-have smart features. Also only charging my Fenix 7 once every 2 weeks is perfect for me. I just carry an extra charging cord in my backpack with my power bank, just in case I didn't check the battery life before a trip. lol
With the ultra You can set the action button to automatically open the outdoor run in workouts if that’s where you typically start, I don’t use training peaks, but you might be able to set the action button to open training peaks workout in the workouts app, but that’s done in the watch app on your phone. Pause and resume seem to be set as a squeeze of both physical button, lap/segment is just action button. This also works with most 3rd party apps as well (Stryd and Runna). I definitely agree with you about the wearables (HRM and foot pods), Garmin is easier, but I always just start in settings app (Apple Watch) when putting the items on.
Been rocking my Garmin Fenix 6 pro solar since they came out. Still runs perfect. It's even been through a motorcycle accident. Drunk driver hit me head on. Broke so many bones, I was a mess. Love my watch.
No it really doesn't, if you're running with a long sleeved shirt it will still occasionally pause or quit out of your workout unless you monitor it constantly. The ergonomics and control scheme of the apple watch just suck for actual sports.
@@Lukas_K_Seidl I have an ultra 2 as well Also run in the rain. Never had it happen. Never had it happen with my Fenix either. Also swim in both sand never had it happen.
I have a SE 1st gen and it gets the job done for me for my cardio and HIIT training. The battery life and tactile buttons on the Garmin are very compelling. I didn’t know about the water lock on the Apple Watch! Thanks for this because there are times when I do boxing my watch stops/pauses the workout.
Agreed about the Garmin charging port - the most annoying thing is the connector is proprietary so if I'm traveling and forget to take it or the cat chews on my cable then I'm screwed. But life got a lot easier when i spent $8 on a 3 pack of USB-C to Garmin right angle adapters. I put one in the car, one by my bed, and one in my travel bag. They have a little leash so i just looped them on a cable so they never get lost. But mostly having 7 day or higher battery life even with a few hours of GPS tracking per week is a game changer. I always have a lot of time to find a charger and take the 60 minutes to get back to 100%
I have an AWU and the battery life is a bit of a pain at times, but I just can't just pull the trigger on a Garmin. I mostly need a workout tracker for indoor workouts (HIIT, Hyrox, CrossFit style), strength/weight lifting workouts and a little running (treadmill and sometimes outdoors). I feel like Garmin excels if you like exercising outside, especially for longer periods. Great video none the less!
@@FarazSyed-ke2cv Hey! I ended up pulling the trigger on a Garmin one week ago, its been great so far, so much so I sold my AWU a few days later! I love all the stats that are built in, especially that morning report!
I prefer the Garmin for indoor workouts as well, I mostly do bouldering and wearing a watch while doing it really isn't recommended so I just wear a chest heart rate strap, start the workout on the watch and take the watch off and the watch will still track the workout. This wasn't possible with the AWU because it stops the workout as soon as you remove the watch from your wrist. Another drawback with the AWU imo is that the design isn't very ergonomic for working out, the crown will dig into the back of your hand in sometimes painful ways or even bruise your skin if you do any workouts with lots of wrist flexion.
Nice video bud.. But i have to say, I really don't understand why people still compare these two watches. In my opinion it's quite clear.. Garmin has always been and will always be the best Sportswatch (of these two) with smartwatch functions.. And the Apple is the better Smartwatch with some sports functions. So someone that looks for a sportswatch needs a Garmin and the other way around.
As a triathlete, Garmin has been great for me. Also it is rugged and very strong. I think Apple Watch is catching up and will likely be better at some point, but at the moment, I really prefer Garmin
they need to consult actual people who work out or train. because the workflow suuuuuux. if they did this i think they'd be much more competitive. plus options for the screen and such to get better battery life.
@@lurklingX I agree. But they seemed pretty focus in sports and adding some incremental changes (connect to power meter, hr zones, training peaks, etc). Battery life is still a struggle to me. I don't want to charge my watch every other day
I find the GPS accuracy interesting bc I've noted my Garmin fenix 7 to track my runs/activities much better and more accurately over my apple watch ultra over the same activities
Love the channel! Both watches are fantastic but I’ve settled on my 7x pro and the Garmin experience. Battery, looks being the two main factors. They both track very well the various metrics. Sounds goofy but just prefer the manlier looks of the Garmin fenix. Thanks for sharing!
I like my 7x saphire solar pro, but I'm not impressed with the battery life. I'm not getting the promised 30-37 days from regular use. I usually get around 21 days use (spo2 off, avg 1 hour activities per day, 1-2 hours per day in sun). How's your battery life?
Have used Apple Watch 9 and Garmin Forerunner 965 for two month now. Garmin is much more accurate as far as running distance is concerned. Apple is sometimes almost 10% off (measured on an official running course). This has obviously a significant impact e.g. on pace per kilometer. So for running Garmin it is, but as everyday watch I prefer Apple.
serious training or even just a mindset of being serious about whatever training level you are at. (i always thought the apple watch seemed a bit fiddly and unrealistic even just setting up for a walk/jog. plus, battery life.)
@@lurklingX Agree!! I also don’t like having to go into 3 different apps to see my stats. Trying to map out a run on the AWU is also nearly impossible without 3rd party apps. Garmin has everything built in.
I moved from the apple watch series 7 to the garmin forerunner 165 music yesterday. Garmin has an AMOLED display, good refresh rate and still does all the smartwatch neccesities (Garmin pay, notifications etc.) Battery life is insane compared to apple. Did an hour padel game yesterday and lost like 5/6% of battery. The amount of additional data that you get about your health (anything from sleep to stress levels) is insane.
Had a garmin venu 1st gen for a few years, and just upgraded to a garmin fenix 7x ss. never was a fan of the apple watch due to the shape of the watch as well as not needing another phone on my wrist lol. But they are a nice alternative lifestyle watch.
Had 4 versions of Apple Watch they lost me at Ultra… ending up spending the money on Garmin Epix. Not cheap but excellent display and features that wont be out of date in one year. Had Garmin Edge, Forerunner, and Vivosmart. Actually still have and use. ;-)
I just bought an ultra 2 after days of debating between Garmin and Apple. I’m mostly concerned with health tracking and I mostly do weight training with additional swimming sessions. To me, the fact that Garmin’s sleep tracking requires pre-setup of sleep time is a deal breaker. Also read lots of posts about Garmin reporting erroneous sleep data. I can’t believe a watch this expensive cannot detect sleep time automatically and correctly. And a lot of its metrics such as the body battery score (the concept of which I love a lot) are calculated partly using the sleep data, making them seem unreliable to me. Just my two cents. I hope I like my ultra 2. (Maybe I’ll come and complain about it after tmb tho 😂)
My sleep schedule is all over the place and have absolutely no issues with Garmin tracking my sleep! It even tracks my naps! Sometimes naps are as short as 15 mins and Garmin gets it right 100% of the time! Setting a sleep schedule on the app is just for optics
I’ve worn garmin but prefer the Ultra for its features and ease of use. Paired with my whoop and CGM I get so much control in monitoring my health. Great videos Shervin , definitely motivating channel
Some of the difficulties he mentions here such as battery life and accidental touches are the same annoyances I dealt with when I had a Galaxy S2 smartwatch several years ago. It's the reason I switched to Garmin because I feel more confident in the activity tracking and don't need yet another thing to remember to charge every day.
Just did my first half marathon and I’ve got the apple ultra. Can’t fault it with running. Hiking I have paused the workout by accident but I think that would have happened on the garmin as there was some technical sections which I probably would have bumped the side buttons. There might be a feature to lock it and unlock it as this would sort out the biggest gripe I think most people have. Apart from the battery but I don’t plan to go off grid for a few days anytime soon so I always just put it on the charger when I go to sleep
A great review of both watches. I thought it was awesome that you didn’t bash either watch even though there are some obvious flaws in design. Instead you kept the review super positive on both fronts.
Good video--am stuck on Android and don't want to put in the $$$ to change my whole system. My compromise is Venu 3. It's not a super smartwatch but fitness tracking on HR is really good on me (tracks with what a HR strap gives me), and it's actually been nice NOT being tethered to my phone all the time.
Yeah, I just ran a marathon (first) with a Series 7 41mm at 80% battery health. Had to charge it when I finally got home. But a regular marathon or less I wouldn’t worry.
I have Amazfit… wanted to try it 3 years ago but didn’t want to go right to expensive ones. I’ve been wearing it EVERY SINGLE DAY! This month going to buy new smart/ fitness watch.
I never look at Apple Vs garmin video except your. There real informative and you seem like a really honest guy! I'll give you a follow to keep up with your videos! Cheers from Québec!
I have Apple Watch Ultra 2, and have the accidental end-workout problem also. I wear it on my left wrist while cycling, and the wrist angle while holding handlebars makes it really easy to hit the crown and side button.
Very thoroughly walk through of the watches. Well done. I have been running with a Garmin Epix Pro and an Apple Watch 7 on every run for more than 6 months. I do agree with almost everything you say in the video. Nonetheless have I come to the conclosion that I am going to sell the Garmin and buy a Apple Ultra Watch instead. I dont use the Apple training app but the app WorkOutDoors. It adress most of the issues you have with showing important data during a workout with the Apple training app. As you mention the Apple Watch sleep data and hr data is more accurate and therefore the morning reports from third party apps on the Apple Watch are a lot more accurate and I find that really important. I have run more than 25 half marathons and 1 marathon with the Apple Watch but have never been close to running out of battery. I do prefer the longer battery life and more buttons on the Garmin but that is it. For everything else I find the Apple Watch superior for my needs.
Dont have either yet. Garmin's it is for sure....battery life and all fitness app features....love the idea of showing ones step by step fitness goal track. Thanks for video Shervin!
Funny, when I made a comment in one of your previous videos about how serious athletes use Garmin, you trolled me. Karma! 😂 I'm glad you've seen the light. Good luck on your running, I'm doing my first full marathon in the fall. I'm currently using the 47mm Epix Pro and love it.
No idea what a “serious” athlete is besides gatekeeping. I have owned lots of garmins and Apple Watches. I now ultra runners who use nothing. Wear what you want, what someone else wears does not affect you. Gatekeeping should absolutely be trolled.
Hi, love watching your comparisons between various devices! Question…is there a reason why you don’t use Stryd outside and only on the treadmill? I’ve had several Garmin and other devices that had a huge amount of variation in regard to pace and distances.
I had every single Apple Watch but switched to the garmin epix 2 a couple of months ago and I will never go back. Battery is really the main game changer for me.
This was very comprehensive Shervin, great job. I'm also currently trying to increase my VO2 Max. It's used to be 56 but it dropped to 49 after an period of recurring injuries.
I have two arms, so I used them both. Apple Watch Ultra 2 with amazing Workoutdoor app is my first choice for running. So that’s my main watch. Garmin 965 take care of all stats between runs, on my right arm. I’m happy with this solution. I start them both during workout of course.
For serious cardio workouts (long runs / rides), Strava segment integration the Garmin 7x pro wins all day long. For general life, navigating new places (including non gps based workouts) Apple Watch Ultra just hits different as it’s ease of use / integration with the iPhone is second to none (no brainer I know given its he same manufacturer) I have both and love both for different reasons, no need for the footballification of one vs. the other
Mate, if you're serious about Endurance sports Garmin or Sunnto. If you're serious about pretending to be in Endurance sports or just 'getting into it' then Apple "enduro" wannabe it. All I wear is a Garmin 45 and that's enough to send a message out there to all the "Wannabeez" with all the High End Kit while wearing that Ridiculously funny looking Apple Watch. OH yeah at the same time I'll pass up those guys while wearing budget or clearance running gear from last year.
Garmin for me. The physical buttons are a game changer, especially with gloves and the data fields are just displayed so much better. The battery life…in another world. Smartwatch features definitely not as good though.
I own a 965 and an Ultra. Both are great but both serve two very unique purposes for me. Simply and briefly put, Garmin is absolutely more data rich and significantly more geared towards athletes who data driven so as to meet and improve on performance goals. Apple for me is great simply to stay connected and not have to bring my phone with me when I’m cycling. It’s as simple as that for me.
one thing with my garmin forerunner, its training and expected race times are way off even after using it for almost 5 months now. Ive run 40-45 seconds faster than the watch says i can run in 2 consecutive 5ks.
Hey @shervin, great video it really help me decide on what watch I am getting Garmin, I will add that with the part regarding the charging is that if you consider just using the charging device the watch come with I think shows how Apple can be even more of a flaw. When I did have an Apple Watch that small charger had to be placed correctly to charge. In your video you used a separate charging stand that makes that easier to ensure it's charging correctly. Again thank you great videos!

Apple Watch Ultra vs Garmin epix Pro Gen 2 (Don't Buy, Until You Watch This): th-cam.com/video/Azp5MBMf3IE/w-d-xo.html
Hello , what model of Garmin watch do you have and what is the screen size?
(specifically I use the Garmin Venu 3)
When it comes to fitness tracking, Garmin is just leagues ahead of Apple.
@Wassup-Doc others have done some tests. You can look it up. Garmin reaults have been pretty accurate.
@@jonathanstreets8284 the 965 is a beautiful pc of technology
That's quite a poor return from a supposed 3-4 hrs a day. That's actually rubbish.
an argument I want to make regarding the Garmin is although the charging method isn't as convenient or nice, you do only have to do it once every two weeks (depending on use), in a way it evens out with an every day charge with the apple watch.
Also some of the Garmins have solar charging built in, mine died on a camping trip and was able to get 2 days leaving it out in the sun for a day
@@Menkii there is no way you got 2 days charge from 6-8hours in the sun. The math of the solar in the unit would make your claim literally impossible.
@@alexdrum94 if your going off the chart on the website all the values given are while the device is on and receiving 50k lux for only 3 hours, the watch can charge while fully powered off so all it’s doing is charging you can easily get a day or 2 if it’s turned off fully, in direct sunlight
@@alexdrum94 I would love to know how your math was done though
I crossed the Grand Canyon, in one day, 12 hours, with the Apple Watch, and had plenty of power left.
Last ultra I ran, used the Apple Watch Ultra, streaming music, acting as a cell phone, over 5 hrs and still had 40%. Just saying, Garmin still has better battery life, but having a cell phone on my wrist, is very nice, when I move to a 100 miler, I may switch but until then, I’ll keep my ultra.
that is awesome to hear
This is the best comparison video using practical applications that I’ve seen. Thanks!
awesome, i'm glad to hear!
@@ashishpantstu Be nice
Good luck tomorrow in the Marathon!!
The Garmin 7x has to be the best fitness watch on the market.
Checking accuracy for hr shows that aw is more precise, especially for resistance training. same for the sleep monitoring.
Apple fanboy here. Love these types of comparisons as it shows where the Apple Watch can still get better. One callout is that you can create a shortcut to enable the water lock on your watch when starting/ending a workout. Good luck with the training!
First time I see a real review of Garmin vs Ultra!
Switched to the Garmin Epix 2 from the AWU for the same reasons!
I also purchased an Epix Gen 2 Titanium. Loving this watch!
Epix Gen 2 Titanium crew checking in also. Love Garmin for tracking all my endurance work.
I love how organized the garmin is. I have both watches, they are nice to have for different occasions
I prefer my garmin
OK. Taste and color are not debatable. Quality and cost-benefit are…
@@adielveras every single checkbox you want to create garmin wins easily
@@cp37373 excluding an accurate hr sensor- Apple best in class there. Nevertheless, I still pick garmin as the new optical hr on garmin is close.
@@cp37373 quantified scientist did a breakdown of every Garmin. They are mostly less accurate than Apple Watches and have terrible sleep tracking.

Apple is trying to make it so it use web browser by using websites search with Siri, it need a bit work but it gives a lot and I almost never use my phone or have it with me.😌😌 So with that hardware I think it’s impressive it can hold me 2,5 to 3 days🤓🍀
But if I’m hiking for a week I would have phone and garmin with me
Add the connection to fitness equipment.
Well the Fenix 8 is out now and it can do that too now.
Tip for checking if the hr monitor is connected. Start the workout and just slightly lift the watch to see if the leds are off. No need to go an check if the hr is connected in settings. Also I have not encountered a case where the HR wouldn’t connect automatically yet
Came here to say this!
Few reasons :
1) Apple sleep doesn’t update right after you wake up. It doesn’t realize you woke up and it takes at least 10- 50
Min) .
Same for me, returned the ultra 2 and got myself a garmin. Its much better
You need third party apps like athlytic to get Garmin features
Apple sleep does Update right after you end the sleep mode.
Lack of pacing during run is a deal breaker for me... recently switched to Garmin and wont be going back.
@@DanielEvansMusic WorkOutDoors is the App he should have used. It has tons of Features
Great video, I just switched from garmin to Apple due to personal preferences! Big game changer for me was lack of support for Garmin Pay in the UK!
So after having the Fenix 7 for 3 weeks I ended up diving in further and went with the Epix Gen 2 and loving the OLED screen
@@Johnny5sWorld yeah garmin products are just top tier! I love the simple look the MIP display gives it’s just enough for me
Such a difference to have to charge a watch once every day! I use a Garmin 965 and I charge it once a week, training 14h per week and never low in battery
I have the epix 2 and AWU2 and I’m thinking of selling the AWU2 due to the apps as you need several to compete with the epix.
Same here! I love the infinite adjustability of the fabric with velcro, my wrist is always expanding and contracting.
I bought the quick fit 22 band for my new Epix Pro and love it versus the silicone band it came with. This was after using the stock silicone band on my forerunner for 2.5 years.
Enduro comes with a similar strap, best and least noticeable watch I’ve ever worn!
@@jonathankittrell170 Hemsut bands are excellent
I could not agree with you.more. Garmin has terrible UI and UX
I use Garmin since my day one running. My first FM is NYCM 2011 and now I am running ultras happily with my garmin
Dude, this was an epic video! You freaking nailed it! Like nailed it. You hit every nuanced difference beginning middle and end of training or workout tracking. Holy hell that was awesome!
@MealTeam6 why… did his comment make you butthurt, can’t seem to see someone else excited eh
thank you for your insights. I switched to Garmin round about year ago prefer all these workout features - to be able to turn off the touchscreen - more than I’m missing the smart features from Apple Watch.
Which Garmin Watch do you use?
Just fyi :)
@@DefinitelyNotJoao You also have gps in your tracking app on the AWU.
I just carry an extra charging cord in my backpack with my power bank, just in case I didn't check the battery life before a trip. lol
Would be good if you could shed some light as to why your employer decided to destroy the Connect app with v5.0. Thanks.
I just tell Siri what workout I want, so one button press
Been rocking my Garmin Fenix 6 pro solar since they came out. Still runs perfect. It's even been through a motorcycle accident. Drunk driver hit me head on. Broke so many bones, I was a mess. Love my watch.
You can set the AW to confirm ending workout in settings. That eliminates the sweat issue.
No it really doesn't, if you're running with a long sleeved shirt it will still occasionally pause or quit out of your workout unless you monitor it constantly. The ergonomics and control scheme of the apple watch just suck for actual sports.
@@Lukas_K_Seidl no it won’t. Doing even recall that with non-Ultra AW. What model are you using?

@@Lukas_K_Seidl I have an ultra 2 as well Also run in the rain. Never had it happen. Never had it happen with my Fenix either. Also swim in both sand never had it happen.
I just experienced that same orange screen issue on my Ultra 2 for the first time today, and had to force restart to get it to work again.
I always have a lot of time to find a charger and take the 60 minutes to get back to 100%
I feel it's unfair that you say that you say apple and Garmin are equals in battery. Garmin is apples daddy , lasting more than 7x times the battery
Apple > garmin
I use an Apple Watch Series 7 for almost 2 years. I change to a Garmin Epix Pro Gen2 and I’m loving it
I have an AWU and the battery life is a bit of a pain at times, but I just can't just pull the trigger on a Garmin.
Aw user here for over 5 years. Switched to the garmin 265. The garmin help’s you become a fitter person. I
@@FarazSyed-ke2cv Hey!
@@lurklingXtrue! Apple has tons of money, amazing hardware but mediocre and not convenient sport functionality.
Got an instinct 2 solar and absolutely love it. I am a convert from Fitbit versa. Love the suggested workout which took me to my first 5k workout/run.
My Wahoo Rival has two weeks battery life, it is awesome. After a full marathon it only used 10% battery. GPS is also spot on.
Love the channel! Both watches are fantastic but I’ve settled on my 7x pro and the Garmin experience. Battery, looks being the two main factors. They both track very well the various metrics. Sounds goofy but just prefer the manlier looks of the Garmin fenix. Thanks for sharing!
Take what you like 👍🏼
I like my 7x saphire solar pro, but I'm not impressed with the battery life.
Great video! Agree with you on Garmin. If you are seriously training it’s a much better option.
serious training or even just a mindset of being serious about whatever training level you are at.
Garmin gang here
Love my Fenix 7 and wouldn't change it for anything
Garmin 35 never did me wrong. Wore it all through middle school
Had a garmin venu 1st gen for a few years, and just upgraded to a garmin fenix 7x ss. never was a fan of the apple watch due to the shape of the watch as well as not needing another phone on my wrist lol. But they are a nice alternative lifestyle watch.
Definitely selling my AW after 2 months, it is never going to replace my Fenix 7 Pro
It's America... own both. Each has a use just like we use different shoes for different task. If you have bought both you can afford both.
@@stevehearst yes but I don’t need both, That’s why I end up wearing only the fenix
Got any updates? I'm in the same dilemma
I’ve worn garmin but prefer the Ultra for its features and ease of use. Paired with my whoop and CGM I get so much control in monitoring my health. Great videos Shervin , definitely motivating channel
Garmin any time. No contest.
for fitness yes, everything else no!
Apparently it’s only 70% accurate ABS Apple watches are about 90% accurate. I saw on The Quantified Scientist. Interesting channel

Waiting for the new generations from both companies 🤞
I LOVE my Venu 3
Yeah, I just ran a marathon (first) with a Series 7 41mm at 80% battery health. Had to charge it when I finally got home. But a regular marathon or less I wouldn’t worry.
That's the best comparison video. I'm from far away in Korea, pressing like button and subscribing. Thank you for the great video.
What a great trick to lock the screen when it's raining or you're wearing long sleeves. Thanks!
Garmin Fenix 7 pro is very easy to use for workouts!! Great review!!
WorkOutDoors is a huge game changer for Apple - so customizable for so many activities and the maps are great.
Dont have either yet. Garmin's it is for sure....battery life and all fitness app features....love the idea of showing ones step by step fitness goal track. Thanks for video Shervin!
Battery life is it. Couldn’t believe my Venu 2 lasted over a week after having 2 x AW that would be lucky to last a day.
You are so spot on Shaggy!
Hi, love watching your comparisons between various devices! Question…is there a reason why you don’t use Stryd outside and only on the treadmill? I’ve had several Garmin and other devices that had a huge amount of variation in regard to pace and distances.
Love my Fenix 7 pro ss. What are your settings for 21 days on your battery meter?
I had every single Apple Watch but switched to the garmin epix 2 a couple of months ago and I will never go back. Battery is really the main game changer for me.
This was very comprehensive Shervin, great job.
I'm also currently trying to increase my VO2 Max. It's used to be 56 but it dropped to 49 after an period of recurring injuries.
Don’t be lazy Swayze
I have two arms, so I used them both. Apple Watch Ultra 2 with amazing Workoutdoor app is my first choice for running. So that’s my main watch. Garmin 965 take care of all stats between runs, on my right arm. I’m happy with this solution. I start them both during workout of course.
For serious cardio workouts (long runs / rides), Strava segment integration the Garmin 7x pro wins all day long.
For general life, navigating new places (including non gps based workouts) Apple Watch Ultra just hits different as it’s ease of use / integration with the iPhone is second to none (no brainer I know given its he same manufacturer)
I have both and love both for different reasons, no need for the footballification of one vs. the other
Mate, if you're serious about Endurance sports Garmin or Sunnto.
Totally agree, garmin is a connected sport watch and apple is a smartwatch with sport features
Garmin 100%
😂😂😂😂😂
I own a 965 and an Ultra. Both are great but both serve two very unique purposes for me. Simply and briefly put, Garmin is absolutely more data rich and significantly more geared towards athletes who data driven so as to meet and improve on performance goals. Apple for me is great simply to stay connected and not have to bring my phone with me when I’m cycling. It’s as simple as that for me.
That’s $1400 in watches. If 965 is for fitness, why not just get a cheaper AW?
Great review. Thanks! I love how you break down the data in a simple, easy understandable way.
one thing with my garmin forerunner, its training and expected race times are way off even after using it for almost 5 months now. Ive run 40-45 seconds faster than the watch says i can run in 2 consecutive 5ks.
My guy killed it with the opinion on Android. I know I know it's a workout watch review, but your american blindspot really stuck out.
