Not much new in this one but answering the questions I keep getting about whether I am happy with my choice - anyone got the 7X and feel the same? Or any skinny latte drinkers out there with an Epix they are loving? 🤣
Great work! I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the accuracy of both the fenix7 and the epix. I've had the 3, 3hr, 5x and 6. I upgraded to the 3hr simply because it had the wrist HRM, but the other swaps were all because I was frustrated with poor HRM accuracy. Every model seemed to over-promise and underdeliver. My fenix 6 was rubbish for tracking heart rate, and frequently lost connectivity with my garmin hrm strap... So, a long-winded way of asking - is the 7 worth revisiting the fenix range???
I upgraded from a Fenix 5 plus to a 7 recently and I am really happy with the upgrade, it’s an easier decision to move two models up than one. The addition of the Body Battery is a big improvement for me over the 5 plus. If I had the 6, I don’t think I could of justified it to my self (well to my wife really)
I have the Epix it’s fantastic ..went from 5 plus to Epix …so nice to easy see the screen…and as you say the body battery 🔋 is really one of the new functions I looking at much more the expected …and it is feeling like it spot on!!!
So many people worried about upgrading and here I am still sporting the 5X saphire and original Instinct. They do everything I need as a cycler and hiker. Great video and lots of useful information.
The 7 is so much more responsive than the 6. I use garmin for many years but I really enjoy the touchscreen for non-activities. More than I‘d have thought. And I have to say that my first thought when I took the 7 out of the box was „wow it looks so much nicer“ and I felt the 6 immediately looked like some ancient tech. I like the new features and the small tweaks to common guy items makes usage way more convenient as well. All in all I love my F7X Solar. Just wish it would integrate better with iOS.
Quality straight talking video that hits the nail on the head. Big price, small upgrades. I would of course love the 7 and would use the scrollable map function when trail running, but I got my Fenix 6 for 375 a year and a half ago and could sell it ( maybe ) for 200. Then to fork out the extra for the small improvements would hurt. Happy with the 6 so maybe will wait for the 8.
Where did you buy it for 375? I currently use an Apple Watch, but want to go Garmin. Was going to buy the 7 to be “future proof”, but a 6 for less than 400 would be perfect. (I also want to pair it with the HRM Pro)
All things considered, I’m surprised that Mark is so unconvinced about the upgrade to the 7X, the touchscreen is a revolution to the Garmin menu system.
I upgraded to a fenix 7x Sapphire Solar from an Apple Watch v5 in a direct trade. I’m not sure how the other party got the fenix (gift, I think), but he lusted after the fruity product, so I gladly traded him. He’s happy, and I’m ecstatic! I absolutely love the fenix 7!
I was not a former Garmin watch owner... Personally, I do like the "prettier" screen of the Epix 2. I felt the battery life was more than enough for the activities I use the watch for... hiking and biking. The Epix typically lasts 7 days or more before I need a recharge, which is longer than I'm ever going to be out on the trail without a stop some place, where I could recharge if needed. The watch really looks good, love the screen!!
Thank you very much. You gave a very well-structured overview of the three watches and always said what YOUR priority is in each point. It was very objective and I didn't have the feeling that it was advertising. I liked it very much.
Mark - this is an awesome video. You are so spot on with your honesty and simplicity with breaking down points and features - what is useful and what is not really. Love love love the humor w straight forward thoughts. And totally with you on jacking up all of the features to get the best, brightest features even if you have to charge ever so slightly more often. Great video all around. Loved the BMW comparison.
Fenix 5s upgrade to 6 Pro just ordered, thanks for all your info Mark. 5s lasted me 5 yrs but the battery was only last 36 hrs now, and the back light was kaput. Looking forward to the new one, and only £369 on amazon UK at the moment. A good £50 cheaper than a 945, and half the price of a 7. Bargain.
I see the value of improved GPS accuracy in my case. I go for multiday forest trips, mostly not following official turistic paths. I record my route using forest paths, where many crossings appear. Then, knowing preciselly where I am is important. HOwever, following Mark way of thinking - my Fenix 5 with blind map does the job too, if I am not sure, simply pull my phone 😀. Flashlight is something I am really looking for - sleeping under open air, sometimes surprises might happen (recently some horny deer near to me started to roar in the night...). I always lay my flashlight next to my sleeping bag, however it might be lost in the grass in the night. Having flashlight on my wrist...this is a game changer. As for maps - Epix display claims more details on map than Fenix. OK, however I don't need to see half day route in front of me. I need to decide, whether to turn left, right or go straight at a precise point. For that, I need to see close perimeter, fullstop. Touch screen in maps? It is game changer for me... One more from other sport - I do kayaking. I am older (54), so keep my heart under certain rate is imporant to me. Can you imagine trying to activate Epix while holding paddle by both hands? 😀. Batery - 6 days of Epix might be OK, however - after couple of years it will degrade to two - three days - much faster than degradation of Fenix battery. Simply because battery life is measured by charging cycles and you have to charge Epix more often. My dissatisfaction with battery life will probably starts around a week between charging. My Fenix 5 is far from that, I charge it maybe once in a fortnight. Simply I don't know and I don't care. With Epix, I am afraid, that after a year, I will be close to a moment, where I will notice the charging cycles and it will start to disturb me. Epix dimming display? Being in the forest I enjoy peace, tranquility... Imagine, that you stare at your watches for any reason and you are afraid of a moment where the watches will turn off and you will have to touch or push anything to turn then on again. Frankly, I was not sure till this video, whether Epix or Fenix 7x, but the way of Mark's thinking finally got me away of nevereending mental loop of hesitation. Sorry for my english, hope you got my thoughts. Six months to my 55 anniversary, six months to get my Fenix 7x :-). take care
@@MelbourneExclusive0 it fulfilled all my expectations. Currently I prepare for Pacific Crest Trail 2024, testing during several days thru-hikes all the gear. Combo Fenix 7x with outdoor navigation Locus is exactly what I expect from it. Route created on Locus and imported to Fenix makes hike easy from navigation point of view. Even - I didn't expected it - tiny map on Fenix display helps sometimes (rivers, ponds). I never use Fenix to create route, just to follow path. I rarely have to pull mobile to check route on larger screen. Guidance even through forest paths is very detailed, at least in the Czech Republic. Very useful is one hour warning before dawn - time to look for well positioned trees to hang hammock :-). No exaggeration. Battery life - 10hours navigation a day, link to Tempe, easy four days. Watch torch - real godsend as I expected. Screen visibility - indoor I just need to see the time or read messages. OK even without glasses which I need for working with laptop. Outdoor - excellent. Buttons - if you customise them, light the torch or initiate wireless payment is easy. By the way - I cannot remember last time I paid using cash or credit card. All through Fenix. The only issue - as with Fenix 5 and other Garmin watches is a rubber wristband. It irritates my skin, 4 dollars band with quickfit from Aliexpress solved it. I noticed, that when kayaking (and wrist is not submersed, just wet), hearth rate measure is somehow lazy and unreliable. Toucscreen? Cannot imagine having back Fenix5 without it. I really recommend sapphire glass. So many times I hit wall or whatever, watch body is with scars, glass with zero deffect same as with Fenix 5. Battery life in normal life (not outdoor) - easy three weeks. Cannot imagine Android smartwatch two days batter life. When Fenix warns me, that battery is going to be depleted, still couple of days of normal usage. Once I reached 1%. I switched then to "just watch" mode, gained another day... Unbelievable. For thru-hike I suggest to purchase at Amazon or Aliexpress reduction to usb c. One cable fit all gear then. Should I buy Fenix 7X pro? No. I don't regret. Torch at Fenix 7x is enough strong, battery life superb. If they release blood pressure measurement, I would probably consider. Should I revert back to Fenix 5? Never. Czech garmin offers discount if you bring them old garmin watch. Cooperation with sensors - flawless. Should I switch to Epix amoled? Never. Having display always ready is more than more bright and detailed display. Not clear in normal life, but outdoor, walking with heavy back for half a day in 30+ C, you don't want any "issues" like waiting, whether display will go on or not. On top - when you hike with poles and work with them really hard, you don't have time or energy to twist your hand to put display on. You just need to glance at your hand in whatever angle to check display. Maybe runners. To have full view of who is writing - 55years old, Camino Franches 2014,marathon, hiking "heavy" - 23kg on my shoulders. All that tested since February, worst conditions minus 10C.Getting ready for PCT24 SOBO. I cannot imagine doing this very difficult hike without Fenix. No advertisement, I paid it all by myself :-).
@@rpsota23 thank you so much for the detailed review! I went with the Forerunner 955 solar. I am more of a Cyclist than an outdoor explorer. The Fenix will probably be my ext upgrade.
@@MelbourneExclusive0 I believe in one of next versions Fenix will get LTE capabilities at least for some data exchange. I read somewhere, that chip is ready for that. I forgot - music on Fenix 7 is almost useless for me-wearing BT headphones, where receiver is in left headphone while watch on right hand, while walking it looses connection when hand is behind body. No problem on a bike. I guess😁.
Great video. Large reason I moved from all the amoled smartwatches I tried to the Fenix 5x was the screen visibility in bright sunlight... Can't beat the Fenix. Plus being the sapphire version I can drive a nail with the thing if I need to without damaging it.
I’m still using my Suunto X6HR, bought in 2006 but think it’s time I upgraded as I’m on my last strap (can’t get them anymore) and it’s held together with superglue and electricians tape. I’ve got to admit it’s been faultless over all of those years and I’ve logged thousands of heart rate data but the 7X looks tempting.
I have had my Fenix 7 for two weeks now. I have only ever had the Samsung gear watched before, I was initially unhappy with the display as the Samsung is amazing, I m now used to it and starting to really love it. the Battery is amazing, although I am only getting about a week in between the charges. kind of wish I'd gone for the 7X but its still an amazing watch. The Garmin is far superior to Samsung when it comes to the activities.
I’m usually comfortable with the 42mm frame, so I went for the 7s. I would go for the Epix if it came with the 42mm frame, hoping Garmin comes up with that in the near future.
Metoo, I’m waiting for the Epix2 small size at first. BUT I am just confused on the battery life of the small Epix2. I don’t wanna spend almost 1500 AUD to buy a smart watch which I have to charge it every single day (like Apple Watch). At the end, I just go for the Fenix 7s and happy with it!
@@sergeant_dornan_ none actually. The flickering leds underneath bothered me at times because if you have your arm up around your head the light may escape and hit your eyelids. I think i've just adjusted how i hold my arms maybe? I loosen it off a few notches as well.
@@BillLayton interesting. Btw, if the green light leaks through that means that the watches aren't sitting tight, which may (very likely) affect quality of readings. I notice that whenever I walk and measure my pulse if they are fit rather loose (just a tiny bit), readings jump all over the place. Have to tight them down... Which brings the uncomfortable feeling. An equation of comfort and better health data.
@@sergeant_dornan_ no doubt true but I slack it off at night for comfort. I don’t know how much difference it makes but it isn’t critical to me to have better sleep data and I’m pretty sure it’s not improved much by being tight. The sleep info is a best guess I believe.
I’ve been using the Fenix 3 for years. I decided to go for the 7x as I wanted HR and TBH I’ve been behind the versions for years so thought I’d I’m gonna keep this 5-6 years again I’ll go for the later sensor tech. But it was hard to turn down some of the 6 used options. Great video as always! Cheers
Yea i still have a 3hr. I was kinda waiting for them to add lte so I can accept calls on the Fenix line. Kinda surprised it's still not available. I'd probably go with the 7x over the epix. I want to charge a watch as little as possible and like the flashlight and solar.
I have been using the Fenix 3 sapphire for quite a few years myself, the price for the 7X put me into a little bit of shock but using it for the first 3 to 4 days seems pretty nice, hopefully this will hold steady with the technology upgrades in the future, so it’ll be no problem to use this for the next 4 to 5 years!
My kids were only enough to get a used 6x sapphire, but I love it (coming from a 305 haha). If I was a better parent or had more kids, I'd have a 7x. I love how your videos make me laugh out loud. I have also never had kids - I was lying before.
Thanks for the review. You answered the question I most needed, the swipe map feature is exactly what I need coming from a world without this ie., no 6X. Going to go ahead and upgrade at next watch purchase and spend the money for the 7X. Very useful info and loved that you came back months later to answer the questions you are asked. Same thing we all wrestle with.......was it worth it or not! Thanks again, and NO - don't sell the kids, but good luck with the watch
I upgraded from 6 pro to 7x solar. Your video makes perfect sense but for me the 6 was just short of battery life for very long cycles if broadcasting heartrate to head unit. The 7x is a huge piece of mind improvement
@@MrSupernova111 while I’m sure a chest strap would be more accurate- I can honestly say I have not had an issue with the 7x. No wild swings or fluctuations- it’s of course possible it’s reading a beat or so out compared to a chest strap but as I’m only comparing against me and my own history that’s not an issue to me. As for the upgrade - I don’t regret it for a second and it’s so good we bought a 7s for my partner
Recently went from a forerunner 35 to a forerunner 245. Absolutely brilliant buy and for £100 new around Christmas. Best bang for the bucks spend for my requirements. Possibly upgrade if I end up doing multi sports.
You know I was really wanting to get the Epix, however, the 7x really is looking more and more like my fit. Reason is the light, I am a hiker and future multi day hiker so the light for night hikes would help out. The solar would help on days I don't charge it or do not think I need to. I want the watch for mostly mapping on hikes, my daily work outs, and this seems to fit. I would love if the epix had more battery life.
Screen on the Epix is 416x416 versus 280x280 on the Fenix, that's a lot more map visibility/detail. You're not going to use the light for very long on a hike, or it'll kill the battery and you've no map, so realistically you still need a torch. The battery life on the Epix is plenty for a multi-day hike in reality...
@@JohnBaxendale Right, as a backpacker I prefer the Epix 2 for this reason. Plus its very easy to carry a tiny portable solar panel and pocket sized backup charger and once a week charge the Epix.
@@AuRowe Yeah, this makes sense to me, you're likely to be carrying a panel or battery anyway, so it's just 1 extra cable to take! You're really not going to get much use out of the light without flattening the Fenix anyway and I wouldn't risk flattening my navigation source to use the light in that kind of situation. It's a nice idea, but it's a gimmick.
Thank you for your review, Mark. I was looking into buying a Fenix and couldn't decide if I should go for v6 or v7. Since I will most likely never use maps, I ended up buying the much cheaper v6 Sapphire as it's 65% of the price of a new v7 Sapphire. Thanks again!
Now youve said it, I kind of agree. Ive wanted an AMOLED Fenix for the longest of time and still do but the price is crazy and I thought my 6X Pro was bad enough.
Important note on the heart-rate monitor! There is just one thing to add to Marks great video which is probably petty to most, but essential to me. This is the first Fenix (from what I know) that has the heartrate monitor embedded into a slightly raised element within the chassis. That way the recording (this is when the lights are constantly flashing for a short period of time) is less visible (if at all) as the monitor sits closer to your hand. As I wear the Fenix devices for years day and night, the light that escapes during the day would obviously not bother me but it happend frequently that I woke up from my Fenix 6Pro especially when having my hand close to my face.
While watching this video, the courier brought me my 7X. Titanium Gray with the leather strap. The gray is very light, lighter than my previous titanium smartwatch. The sides are two tone gray, and look plastic. The leather strap is the worst watch strap that I own. Still, the original dark-gray strap is very comfortable and looks on par with the watch.
For those on a budget and want a running watch, look at the Garmin forerunner 45, I got one for Christmas and I love it to bits, I just use it for runing and does everything I need really
I went with the F7X, but what I really want is the flashlight on a Epix 2 with a 51mm screen. The F7x really is a great kit. Like the touch screen and it's way more responsive than my F6X. The flashlight comes in handy also.
The Epix has a flashlight. You press the light x 2 and the screen goes white. It's more than enough for 99% of use cases. You can also get it to strobe for running.
Staying with my Fenix 6X Pro Solar (Stainless Steel Special Edition).. The 7X isn’t worth the upgrade for “ME”, so I’ll be waiting for the Fenix 8X (Hopefully)…. Thanks! 🇺🇸
Been thinking to upgrade my 6x to 7x solar, but after seeing your video. I made up my mind... Instead of trade in my 6x for newer version, i ended up with adding new instinct 2 solar in my collection.. sometimes it's good to have lighter and simple watch to wear during workout sessions
I have an Instinct now and want to upgrade to a 6x sapphire but the 7x solar sapphire is so awesome but also $400 more. I think it’s the 6x sapphire for me. Thx for the honest review. Subbed
The problem with selling the 6 second hand is they aren't going for much less than them new at the moment. I just ordered a 6x for £340, I was scouting eBay for second hand ones and they aren't going for much less than new (on auction) and then you have less warranty (if any). Definitely not worth paying £30-£70 less second hand.
I am still rocking my 3HR and amazed at all the features. Almost 6 years old at this point. I am thinking of upgrading one day. Mostly interested in the better HR and pulse OX.
I still have my 3HR as well. I'm interested in upgrading due to GPS accuracy. On my MTB rides I'm often .5 to 1 mile off compared to my phone and friends Garmin. Have you noticed it's off?
Still rocking my VivoActive 3. I'm not the target audience for any Fenix device, but I really LOVE the way they look. I use machines and rarely, if ever, need GPS on my watch. Great video though. Enjoyed the discussion.
I bit the bullet and upgraded from the 6 to the 7x. Still waiting for it to arrive but the larger screen with solar and touch(which I want for maps), torch, plus sapphire over gorilla glass will make it seem like I'm getting something! I agree that it's not worth the price to upgrade when you look at it in terms of pure specs but the 7 pretty much solved all the minor gripes I had with the 6 so I should be happy with it and won't need another watch for its lifetime! Unless some new obscure sport gets invented which I suddenly get really into and only the 8 will track it 😂 Edit: this is the second video I've seen from you, both covering the fenix 7, and I've subbed for the straight talking and upfront opinions. Need more of this sort of stuff
Really enjoying your reviews. I have a F5x and its srerved me very well. I watched your review on the Epix and now want that, as i believe it suits my needs better. Had open heart surgery, valve replacement done 5 weeks ago and i think the extra metrics will help me get back to my fitness level quicker and safer. I usually go all out on all fitness, the new watches will hopefully tell me to take my foot off the gas. I will listen to the watch and not my wife as she says im always doing too much. Cheers for your honest reviews.
Hi Thomas, same here also got a OnX mechanical valve about 1.5 years ago. Watch definitely helps and your wife is probably pretty smart 😉. Good luck recovering. You'll be disappointed about the progress in the first 6 months, but baffled about the progress you can make in a year. Atomic Habbits was a great book for me to build back routines. Cheers Bas from the Netherlands
I'm having doubts of upgrading from my original Fenix5 to the 7. Still has amazing battery life (complete full distance ironman) does whatever I need. The Fenix5 is a great piece!
I just bought F5 Sapphire used in great condition for third the price of new P7 and Im super happy. Definitely would not spend the price for new P7 although it has some nice improvements.
Sitting around waiting for Fedex to show up with my Epix, while my HR is still maxxed out after hitting "BUY" yesterday for this outrageously expensive watch!!! I currently have a Fenix 5 and love it so I'm not sure the Epix will stick around but I'll give it a shot.
Well that was short-lived! Epix just went back today, just too much cash compared to a 7 or even a 6 Pro that have essentially the same features. AMOLED screen is nice but a bit too pretty-boy for me, I prefer the brutish look and efficiency of the good old MIPS screen. The touchscreen IS a nice feature especially with the use options attached to it but I still consider it overpriced so I'll wait for the 6 series pricing to start coming down then probably grab one of those. In the meantime my F5 is just fine. Cheers, great channel.
All my life I dreamt of having a Map on my wrist - thought it was the coolest. The f6 was Ok, but seeing what the f7 could do it was a no brainer to get the f7 - even with the price tag..
Think I’m going with the latte drinker special after looking at the much better map reading detail over the 7. 64 colors can’t complete with 64K. Pass the latte. Excellent reviews. Thanks
Went from 5xplus to 7x and absolutely loved it especially the light. Sadly my Woodley parkrun gave me just over 5k and zero cadence and very low HR 😭 sent it back as it had a fault, staying with my rough and ready 5x. Great channel 👍
Going from Fenix 5 to 7 solar is what I would do. Having maps for the bike will be handy with long rides coming up. Battery life will be a plus too, my 5 has been less impressive from about a year in but been stable since.
i have a Fenix 3 and am still struggling with the cost of upgrade! the 3 still works and refuses to die - still tracks my activities well and the battery still mostly holds.
I held my 3 for seven years. I'm never going to qualify for Kona so why upgrade when it's doing the job yeah? Anyhow, still going strong but had some spare cash so bought the 6 pro on special. Glad I did. Wrist HR. Maps. Music. Some new readouts to play with and wonder what's gone wrong with my body. And my old 3 and HRMs can go in the kit as a backup. If I get seven years out of that, well, I'll be 65 and probably have given it all away to play lawn bowls.
Same boat here. 7 years with a 3HR and it's going strong, decent enough battery life - especially as I now use a 830 for cycling. Tempted by the 7x pro, but wondering if an 8 is around the corner Q1 next year and prices might drop. The price increase is massive compared to what the 3HR was back when new, over double. But saying that I keep watching reviews, keep wondering and probably would bite the 7x bullet if I do decide to get the latest now and know it would last another 7 years 🤪
Buttons are indeed betttwr than navigating by finger for us F2 upward users , F3HR F5 F5x F6x Pro Solar. And yes maps by fingers about only place actually needed. Brill review. Bang on.
I am aware this video is old but I used this to help with a purchase of the decent mk2i over the mk3i, they had a special and the mk2 was less then half the price of the mk3i. Thanks!
Buttons are indeed better VS touchscreen than navigating by finger main screens for us from F2 upward , F3HR F5 F5x F6x Pro Solar my background . And yes maps by fingers about only place actually needed. And we’ll worthy. Tho I ride so I ride with an Edge unit and the Fenix is just back up and got holiday runs as my. Hobby . Brill review. Bang on.
EPIX for me. The screen in outdoor bright sunlight is worth it! Game changer. And the battery lasts 1-2 weeks easily. Battery is good enough to complete multi day ultra marathons and still have enough battery to last the rest of the week… the Epix is superior. There is no reason to need more battery unless in extended multi week long survival situations in which case the Enduro is best… this means the Fenix series is sort of a tweener now. Epix all the way. The build quality of the Epix is amazing it feels like it’s built like a tank… the Fenix feels cheaper imo
February 2023 and I decided on the Epix 2 as could not get away from the beautiful oled screen and now a year plus in they are much cheaper to buy, I change my phone daily so this 16 days in gesture mode still seams a long time compared to Apple 8 watch or even Apple ultra. Chest or arm strap or a must if your into very accurate data, nice review 🥳🥳🥳
completely agree with you. the 7x Solar is a crazy cool device, but not worth the additional cost -from a normal perspective. But I would neveer go back and the LED is an unique selling point!
I upgraded to the 7 Solar Sapphire from a 6 Pro. I wear fancy watches to work, and use my Fenix to swim/ride/run/hike and do weights.... so the utilitarian tool need means, the Epix wasn't for me. No regrets but I can say after having a 2, 3, 5 and 6Pro, that the darker sapphire display is a little too dark indoors....I didn't realize the sapphire glass was so much darker than the non-sapphire models I'd previously had.
Thank you for demonstrating the flashlight. I was wondering if it was usefull. As a volunteer firefighter I usually get out of the bedroom at night in full darkness, so I don't disturb the house. Now I can do it with the light of my watch. You convinced me :-)
Just recently switched from Polar to Garmin and wasn’t sure what to get finally settled in and got the 6X and very happy with my choice especially after this video! To me Garmin is far better then my old watch and the 6X sapphire is kinda the best of both worlds as far as training and throw a nice band on it or leave it and still go out to a fancy place and still looks great! Thanks for the review!!🤙
I own a fenix 5 plus and personally I still feel a bit overwhelmed about purchasing a Fenix 7...The reason is that I divide what Garmin watches do in 2 different categories : 1 - things that can really help me (interval training set up/working out programm- VO2 - performance status - heart rate...Music - Stryd connection - Maps) 2 - things that make me curious if the device is right (stamina...Oxymeter...and so on) I agree that fenix 7 make the Maps easier to navigate but I do not remember runners spending time on this during a competition...except if they really partecipate to specific type of race ... I totally agree about the Epix look...I still love my Fenix 3 ...and I would not change it for a smart watch... :D
Great honest video Mark, love it, nearly as much as the t shirt. Currently have the 6 sapphire, think I can wait until the 7 is in the sale. Keep the videos coming
I love how you broke this down. I picked up the Fēnix 6 Pro 2 years ago from the basic 5. I loved the updates and based on this, I will save my money for the newest one when my 6 Pro kicks the bucket. Hopefully not for another two years.
There is a torch feature on the Garmin Phoenix 6 you make display bright white - very useful. I think the only real advantage of the 7 over the 6 is the ability to pan and zoom the maps. I just bought the Garmin titanium metal bracelet for my Garmin Phoenix 6. A huge improvement on the rubber strap for comfort and looks brilliant.
I chose to upgrade to epix sapphire over the fenix 7 sapphire. Due to the better resolution on the Epix. As i use it mostly for hike hunting. The better resolution on the Epix provide more terrain details which is very useful.
Agreed, I went from a 3Hr to a 6x Pro so will wait until the 9! Did wonder if your aggravation over course vs watch distance during ultras would be even worse with the more accurate 7 given it will be measuring you stepping off the course for a wee and milling around an aid station.
as a novice runner who didnt get further then half a marathon i still run with my fenix 3. does what i need from it. maybe when i finish my training scedule to 10k i'll see if an upgrade is needed. (broke my ankle a few months ago) great review, makes you think about what is really needed on a new watch. they hype new features...but is everything new needed...
I always choose the Garmin X model, I had a S version on Descent MK2 and GPS was slow. I also had the 6X but charging very week is a huge disadvantage. Thanks for the video, I will upgrade to the 7X solar.
Thanks for the clip. I just buyed few days ago my first Garmin. The tactix pro. I spent weeks watching clips and was a bit hard to decide if I will like the MIP screen. Had alot of amoled screens until now. In the dark.. Yea.. It's a bit Lame.. And kind of miss the amoled but during day and specially when the sun is up.. MIP display is simply better and crisp. And. During dau.. Amoled boost the brightness at max. Draining battery fast..while Mio does not need power.. So.. That's something. As a conclusion.. I am glad I chosed the Tactix.. Do not need that military stuff but I liked the look better. Peace
The one feature i can not wait to flow down the Garmin watch food chain is the ability to edit those data screens on the phone. I have see Garmin watch competitors with it and thought i wish we had that so hopefully soon we will. Any time i have had to create data screens on my watch i always forget what i set to what while doing it. This would make my life easier. For when i want to tweak a data screen setup or setup multiple custom data screens for activity's.
Recently recommended your channel and I’m really enjoying your content. Informative, witty and aspirational, keep it up! Have you ever tried a Stryd running power meter? Would love to see your take on it.
I haven't tried the Stryd, but got the Garmin HRM Pro after my polar HR monitor shed its mortal coil. It has running dynamics as well so its another cool toy worth looking at. If u wear a "strap-on" (phnarrrrr) it saves another widget to coordinate. The data is all in garmin connect.
God I love your videos. I googled the Seiko immediately but seems to be going for around $1300 so no thanks. But love the spirit of your videos. It's clearly your point of view and I happen to align with it.
Fenix7 is a great watch still i returned it after testing it against the Instinct 2 Solar, we all have different preferences and im just in love how light and rugged the Instinct is. Used a Fenix5 before and love the Upgrade. Enjoy your 7!
Mark, As someone who turned in a BMW last summer and has been driving an ambient LED-less Honda for the past 9 months you need to start appreciating the LEDs. Take it from me- you’ll definitely miss them when the Burger King employee stops complimenting you on your interior!
The only thing disappointing on this review is you picked the purple lights in the BMW 😜 Cheers...thanks for the great review, it was very helpful. I did pull the trigger and got the Garmin.
Just to give you situational awareness, I totally get why the Tactix 7. Has a green light. In the military we stay away from white light to retain our night vision and to also not give away our position. White light IS superior, but it has the most drawbacks. Red light is commonly used to retain our night vision. However, when reading a map the terrain elevation/countour lines are in red. We use a green light to use for map reading.
Not much new in this one but answering the questions I keep getting about whether I am happy with my choice - anyone got the 7X and feel the same? Or any skinny latte drinkers out there with an Epix they are loving? 🤣
None of those. Need some frorerunner 955 on my feminine wrists!
No. Still Happy with my 6x😉
Loving the epix.
I'm upgrading from the 5X. I can't wait!!
LOVE THE FACT THAT HE GETS RIGHT INTO IT - NO BS - DIRECT AND STRAIGHTFORWARD
Love the fact you answered the Question straight away.
Still watched the full video 👍🏻 keep it up
Like to keep the people who only have 30 seconds free happy. 😂
@@sammenil1498 Yes, I have felt the body battery to be accurate so far.
Yeah the wife factor ... good to keep the sanity in the decision-making process.
@@basengelblik5199 I told her my Fenix 5 Plus told me there was an update when I plugged it in to the computer.....a Fenix 7!
Ordered my epix from the original 5. I honestly think if my 5 had maps in it I wouldn’t even have upgraded.
So many people worried about upgrading and here I am still sporting the 5X saphire and original Instinct. They do everything I need as a cycler and hiker.
Great video and lots of useful information.
I really appreciate your no BS approach to letting us know what is what. Very helpful, and entertaining of course!
Happy with the 6 so maybe will wait for the 8.
the 8 will probably be launched in 3 years specially with how the world is right now, so don't even bother waiting
Where did you buy it for 375? I currently use an Apple Watch, but want to go Garmin. Was going to buy the 7 to be “future proof”, but a 6 for less than 400 would be perfect. (I also want to pair it with the HRM Pro)
@@miguelosterroht I bought a second hand 6 pro sapphire for 350. It looks like new not even a single scratch on it. I am very happy with it!
@@miguelosterroht yeah just keep an eye on ebay. i just got a 6pro for $230 last month. i love having new fancy stuff, but couldn't pass up this price
@@miguelosterroht If you are still looking Argos has the 6x Pro (non sapphire) for £359 or the 6 Pro for £305
All things considered, I’m surprised that Mark is so unconvinced about the upgrade to the 7X, the touchscreen is a revolution to the Garmin menu system.
I do a lot of hiking and upgraded just for the touchscreen map.
I want the touchscreen for the map and the flashlight. And I'll take the better accuracy on gps and hr
The watch really looks good, love the screen!!
love the fenix 7, have the 7s and the battery life alone is worth the upgrade - wore the watch for 2 weeks straight without recharging
One of the most perfect PRACTICAL reviews I've seen. Kudos!
Six months to my 55 anniversary, six months to get my Fenix 7x :-). take care
How is the 7x do you like it alot after all this time?
No advertisement, I paid it all by myself :-).
sorry for a mistake - I am not a bat, I follow one hour sunset warning, not dawn, although even this you can set at your Fenix. 😅
I bought a 6X Pro a month ago and am in love with it. I like all the workout and body/sleep stats, it's super rugged, just a great companion.
Same here. Bought the 6x pro for a good price and this watch blew me away after many years of Suunto..
No trouble sleeping with them? X version is huge.
😂
That's efing hilarious😂.
I heard the 7x might cause inaccurate readings due to the size. Have you noticed any issues related to the size of the Fenix 7x? Thanks!
You need the 7X - no question.
Great review and comparaison. So relevant. You won a new subscriber. Thanks for your work and warm hello from 🇮🇱
Important note on the heart-rate monitor!
I totally agree. Picking the epix over 7x is like chopping the springs on your car to make it look better. 7x is the grown up choice😁
Great advice - 45 is superb
I went with the F7X, but what I really want is the flashlight on a Epix 2 with a 51mm screen. The F7x really is a great kit. Like the touch screen and it's way more responsive than my F6X. The flashlight comes in handy also.
The Epix has a flashlight. You press the light x 2 and the screen goes white. It's more than enough for 99% of use cases. You can also get it to strobe for running.
I heard the 7x might cause inaccurate readings due to the size. Have you noticed any issues related to the size of the Fenix 7x? Thanks!
@@MrSupernova111 Running and Cycling I always wear a chest strap. So I can't speak about accuracy there. Other workouts seem to be accurate though.

Subbed
I bought a refurbished Fenix 6s a few weeks ago. I deemed it the best watch for my sports, workout tracking and hiking for the $329 I spent.😎
Hi from Belize. Love your videos. Thank you very much. I am medium to small built but got myself the 6x in part due to Arnold in your video.
I am still rocking my 3HR and amazed at all the features. Almost 6 years old at this point. I am thinking of upgrading one day. Mostly interested in the better HR and pulse OX.
I’ll sell you a 5x plus
I still have my 3HR as well. I'm interested in upgrading due to GPS accuracy. On my MTB rides I'm often .5 to 1 mile off compared to my phone and friends Garmin. Have you noticed it's off?
Still rocking my VivoActive 3. I'm not the target audience for any Fenix device, but I really LOVE the way they look. I use machines and rarely, if ever, need GPS on my watch. Great video though. Enjoyed the discussion.
Haha me too. I know I don’t need all the features of a Fenix but I still want one!
brilliant. answered all the questions i had without the fluff. i just subscribed.
Unless some new obscure sport gets invented which I suddenly get really into and only the 8 will track it 😂
Edit: this is the second video I've seen from you, both covering the fenix 7, and I've subbed for the straight talking and upfront opinions.
I just bought F5 Sapphire used in great condition for third the price of new P7 and Im super happy. Definitely would not spend the price for new P7 although it has some nice improvements.
Wear it till it runs out. I’ve done that with every Garmin watch I’ve had. No regrets! Upgrade when needed, not just cuz the new model came out!
Are you kidding? That LED light demo was the best part of this review. Carry on. 🤣
Excellent, informative review, thanks. For me personally the significantly increased battery life (with solar) is definitely worth it. YMMV of course.
I’m in the same boat, its been so good. But I thin I’m at the point where I might bite the bullet and pick up a 7
@@bpersons14 I look far too regularly!!
Bang on.
I bought a 6 sapphire 2 years ago, and I’m still satisfied. Although the seven solar sapphire is nice. It’s not so nice that I’d get rid of my 6.
I am aware this video is old but I used this to help with a purchase of the decent mk2i over the mk3i, they had a special and the mk2 was less then half the price of the mk3i. Thanks!
"Bearing in mind, 'Im not your mum, so make your own mind up"'.." love this quote. Instant subscribe.
Best LED light demonstration I had see!
You are so right Fenix 7x great watch, I have the Fenix 6 pro and Fenix 5x, had my 7x month too.
Bang on.
I have recently purchased the fenix 7x pro sapphire...love the big size and the features....😎
Did you have time to test GPS? Is it accurate? Also, how's HR new sensor with intervals and changing speed....on F6 that was'nt good...
@@mihailotancev3284 GPS and sensors working really well....no problems at present..
I have the 6X Pro Solar and find the screen to be pretty terrible, it's not even the Sapphire :(
Thank you for demonstrating the flashlight. I was wondering if it was usefull. As a volunteer firefighter I usually get out of the bedroom at night in full darkness, so I don't disturb the house. Now I can do it with the light of my watch. You convinced me :-)
Glad it was helpful! I use it all the time for going to bed when the house is dark!
Happy I’ve stayed with the 6X which I upgraded from the 3. Think the 6x has a few years left on my wrist yet before I upgrade.
I own a fenix 5 plus and personally I still feel a bit overwhelmed about purchasing a Fenix 7...The reason is that I divide what Garmin watches do in 2 different categories :
1 - things that can really help me (interval training set up/working out programm- VO2 - performance status - heart rate...Music - Stryd connection - Maps)
2 - things that make me curious if the device is right (stamina...Oxymeter...and so on)
I agree that fenix 7 make the Maps easier to navigate but I do not remember runners spending time on this during a competition...except if they really partecipate to specific type of race ...
I totally agree about the Epix look...I still love my Fenix 3 ...and I would not change it for a smart watch... :D
Nice video. Down to brass tacks, no fancy words, straight facts. Like your style.
Great honest video Mark, love it, nearly as much as the t shirt.
Currently have the 6 sapphire, think I can wait until the 7 is in the sale.
Keep the videos coming
Thanks for the honest video. I stay with my Fenix 6X PRO Saphir, cuz i have everything i need and its amazing. I do a lot skitouring and i hate touch.
Always intelligent, concise reviews.
I love how you broke this down. I picked up the Fēnix 6 Pro 2 years ago from the basic 5. I loved the updates and based on this, I will save my money for the newest one when my 6 Pro kicks the bucket. Hopefully not for another two years.
I really enjoyed that review and found it useful. Now ordered a 7X
Any issues using the touch screen during rain and freezing cold winter?
Nice review -it's handy that you point out what to a lot of people out there would not be noticed.
(broke my ankle a few months ago)
great review, makes you think about what is really needed on a new watch. they hype new features...but is everything new needed...
Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar 👌🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 love it so much. Awesome watch I will have for long long time 💪🏻
I always choose the Garmin X model, I had a S version on Descent MK2 and GPS was slow. I also had the 6X but charging very week is a huge disadvantage. Thanks for the video, I will upgrade to the 7X solar.
Im in love 😻 with 7x i going to my first ultra race 210km end of April
Peace
I have no interest in either device, however, I love all of your content and your presentation! Thanks and keep up the great work!
Lol wth
This dude absolutely nailed this video.
Got a 7X Sapphire Solar 2 weeks ago... No doubt the best buy I could have done!!!
Recently recommended your channel and I’m really enjoying your content. Informative, witty and aspirational, keep it up! Have you ever tried a Stryd running power meter? Would love to see your take on it.
no -But very interested in one. Probably something I look at over the summer.
I love my fenix 5x plus. Does everything I need. Waiting for fenix 10x
Enjoy your 7!
best reviews on the net! thanks for sorting it out Mark! il buy your 6s :D
Seriously awesome comparison review. I stick with my 6 :) was trying to justify the spend, maybe in a year when prices drop I'll get the epix
Mark,
As someone who turned in a BMW last summer and has been driving an ambient LED-less Honda for the past 9 months you need to start appreciating the LEDs.
