how to understand your CORE BELIEFS 🧠 | Downward Arrow Technique!

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy relies a lot on downward arrow technique in the early stages to increase understanding of people's subsconscious fears and beliefs (or negative core beliefs). It's a simple yet really powerful technique which I found was so helpful in understanding WHY I felt big emotions, so give it a try!
    Today I break down the history of downward arrow technique starting from Aaron Beck's CBT model, and go into an explanation of how it works, as well as examples.

    Thanks so much for this..our thoughts can confuse what we want but when we go back to the bigger picture..we realise what we want and how to get it .. sticking to our own self core beliefs is so important to our identity ..never doubt yourself..we don't know what we're capable till we do something 💯🙌👍✌️

    Great video. Sometimes I feel like no matter how aware of my beliefs and thoughts I am, I am powerless to change them. I still think these things like ‘I’m an idiot’ or ‘I’m socially inept’. I know they’re maladaptive, but I still keep thinking it. I don’t know how to get my brain to stop saying these words, it gets tiring reminding myself that thoughts aren’t facts all the time

      Thank you for sharing ♥️ hmm CBT works on challenging the thoughts but the most powerful is always changing behaviour! So if I was worried I was socially inept I might avoid social situations so the opposite would be to make ourselves go and have a conversation with a new person and to keep doing it over and over and over even if it feels weird or we stumble. Eventually we become a new person through the slow changing of behaviour. I had pretty crippling social anxiety when I was younger so I can definitely relate. You got this!

    I think if you go deep enough with a fear it often relates to survivalism of some kind - usually the hard thing is that part of the survivalism is a reflex from our distant past to something that isn't present now, but some other parts of the survivalism are actually entirely relevant and backed by evidence. But the one fear consists of both things, so it's like trying to introspect in order to find and separate the applicable fear from the non applicable one.

      Interesting :) I have also observed a growing body of research relating to death anxiety if that's what you're referring to, I'll have to look more into it!

      @@thepsychdiaries I think more like food (example: cost of living rises), shelter (rent rises, mortage rate rises), connection to community (in the distant past a lack of connection meant real risk of dying) and romance (arguably very core: the furthering of genes). Fears that are primordial and part of our core and might be partly valid in the client's current life but not entirely valid. A difficult combination. But that's my estimate, I should really go see if I could drum up a bunch of references as support for it!

    I wanted to ask what can I do if the root of the anxiety is directly related to the situation but I need to calm down?
    (This is if getting away from the problem is currently impossible)

      Oh rough one :( if it's completely unchangeable and sometimes things for a little bit- maybe thinking about the 2 or 3 things that are within your control that might be able to help out in an indirect way and then make a plan for the moment the unchangeable situation can change (sorry this is a bit vague but hard unless I had more details).       Hello welcome! That's amazing- hmm all I can think of is to keep practising and reminding yourself that it's a huge accomplishment to be bilingual and having the persistence to learn is very impressive (especially Japanese to English as they're so different). Maybe also remembering not to compare yourself to other native speakers- trust me all of us native english speakers would struggle so much trying to learn Japanese and if anyone is unsupportive its because they have never tried to learn a new language themselves.
