      Hi Chris, Thanks for this latest video! Completely understand your comments about updating & upgrading your knife inventory. Really glad to hear that you intend to do some upcoming videos on products available at The Knife Connection. They currently have a great package deal on a customized Esee 6 with a complete Sheath unit. Hence, I am REALLY interested to see & hear your thoughts in an upcoming PM101 video on a direct comparison between the Becker BK7 and the Esee 6 since those seem to be the two most frequently used Bushcraft knives in that size (and price range) by You Tubers. To be honest, it occurred to me that it would also be a perfect subject matter for one of your PM101 videos for that very same reason! Since many of us subs highly value your thoughts and opinion on a matter like this subject, I respectfully ask you to consider making that type of video when you have the time & opportunity to do so. I really think A LOT of your PM101 viewers would really appreciate seeing a video from you on that topic. Thanks again for all of your work on this channel!

    Got my BK7 long before I found your channel. Found you because of my knife. The belt loop on the sheath is one piece. You have to take your belt loose to hang the sheath on it. Also mine came with a BK13 in the small pocket. Super to have found both of you. BK7 and PM101. You're honest thanks for everything you do for us.

    It blows my mind that you get blow back from people about the knives YOU like. Some people are just idiots...plain and simple.
    I am new to the blade fan ranks having lived the first four and a half decades on Earth with knives given to me as gifts, "hand me downs" knives, or cheap blades in giveaway membership promotions. Thank you for your insight and opinions on various knives. Between you (and other knife youtubers) and a good friend who is into knives, my budding knife appreciation continues to grow. Although my wish list doesn't include the high end knives you review, your insights into the positives and negatives of any knife is valuable to many of us that can't always pick up a knife and hold it before buying. We live in an age of Amazon where "trying before you buy" in a brick and mortar store is becoming more rare. You just can't find many stores that carry decent knives and your reviews help us out here to form valuable opinions and learn what to look for. So again, thank you!
    Your take on the Junglas II is one of the primary reasons I have it on my list to buy. I have been on the fence between it and the Esse 6 but I think I am going with the Junglas II. It looks like a knife that is well suited for many tasks in the woods. Coupled with a small fixed blade (like the CRKT Siwi in SK5 steel that I am very fond of -- and that Santa may leave under the tree this year) the Junglas II should be a great woods blade to have around.
    Keep the videos coming!

      Looking at that one makes me want to get one I know I have to customize it to look like a personal knife but it will be worth it when I have a cool leather Sheeva, my father had a very cool old knive he made a sheeve out of a old custom gun holster that went great with the knife someone stole it it's one of a kind it had some kinda eached in Spanish writing so if any of my family member's and I see it could be ID who ever stole it made shire we would never see it again.

    I love my EXT-1. I bought the EXT-2 first because I thought the additional size would perform more tasks. I found the smaller size of the EXT-1 to be more useful and comfortable. I carry the EXT-1 on my belt, a T-17 on my pack for batoning, a BK24 on my drop holster as a small back-up, and a Mora Pro-S thrown in my pack for "just in case". I know I carry too many knives

  • @theaveragewoodsman6002
    @theaveragewoodsman6002 6 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I've actually used the MSK briefly and didn't particularly like it. For being a knife that was built from the ground up to be a "one tool" option it performs poorly at even basic tasks. For being as heavy as it is it doesn't chop well. The blade is relatively short, so it has real issues batoning large logs. And it carves like a sharpened crowbar.
    I'm sure there's a niche market for it, but IMO it's more of a gimmick than an actual practical blade.

    • @ChrisGilliamOffGrid

    • @mrq1701
      @mrq1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashmerch2558 the 4 and 5 are completely different knives. The 5 doesn't really fit well in the line-up. It's thicker, heavier, and has a different blade shape. The 3, 4, and 6 all look like the same line, but progressively bigger. I wish ESEE made a 5 that truly fit in that line. The 5 is like a sharpened crow-bar

    Personally the type of steel that I consider being a good quality or D2 and 440C. One of my favorite camp knives is the camp knife From knives of Alaska out of D2. With the stag handle. It stays sharp as a razor is tough as nails and one of the most practical knives I have ever used. Especially when taking it into the kitchen at the camp. The handle does not get in The way of chopping onions and other vegetables and meats. But besides that I carry all through the woods in every place I go. So when I saw that you had one that was made of D2 steel I was so happy. I Consider D2 some of the finest steal ever made. And it is of the highest-quality.

  • @BillHalliwell
    @BillHalliwell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    G'day Chris, Well, mate you created a real interesting video. I reckon it’s good to know what knives you like so much you decide to hang on to them. After all, you see just about every major knife release in the US and elsewhere, sometimes. Some of my knives are comparatively cheap Cold Steel knives that many, many people would sneer at but I don't give a dead wombat's ring what other people think. Some of my knives I have to save up for months in advance and some I've only got because of the generosity and kindness of good people at the Pout House, DLT and Dark Timber Brotherhood etc. The prices are immaterial. If I don't like a knife it doesn't matter if it costs $19.95 or $2,837. 99. And then again I reckon some of the highest priced 'custom', 'artistic' folders are just catering to a market who wishes to have the latest and the most expensive because they can. I’ve got no trouble with that. All my life I've wanted a Bentley motor vehicle. I'll never have one unless I snag the lottery and if I did I'd only buy the model I love the most and I'd enjoy it for the outstanding piece of British engineering that it is. I'd still have to park it at the 'mediocre market' and I'd still have to drag out the garbage bins every Sunday night. I guess what I'm awkwardly trying to say is that it just doesn't matter. Your taste in knives is just that, YOUR personal preference. If anyone get's hot and bothered about that then they might as well criticize you for your choice of house, wife, dog, running shoes... it's madness and it isn't worth your breath, however, I'm glad you said what you said. Good on you! Cheers, BH

    Kudos for your comments on the MSK1...which mirror my thoughts exactly!
    Any knife designer/ maker who trumpets his knife has 'the one' is going to take a spanking from a large section of the knife community...I actually enjoy using it a lot. The balance is superb - between choking up in that giant choil (when it feels like a standard 4" bushcraft knife) and a three fingered/ wrist snap end-of-handle grip - making it a reasonable chopper - it is always comfortable to use.
    My top tip is to take some time to profile the edge. I put a convex on the belly and narrowed the grind on heel and tip.
    Your comments on THIS D2 are spot on - it sharpens reasonably easily in the field and holds its edge well - I've had no issues with chipping when chopping! The marketing mistake was putting that price tag on a D2 blade - but this was a startup project and good luck field sharpening M390 or S90V!
    Does it do everything exceptionally? Of course not! But I think that David has come up with a good product and, with its companion mini neck knife, it's as good a combo for arboreal hardwoods as the Leuku/ Puuko combo is for the pine/ softwoods of Scandinavia.

    My BK9 is a Keeper for sure. And if anything happens to it, i will buy another ASAP.
    My two BRK-JX5-V1s are keepers. Too pricy to replace them though. So I'm more careful with them.
    My OCK Rtak2 is another keeper. Need to get a better sheath still. I prefer leather sheaths.
    And more...

    Nice choice. BTW, ESEE makes the only sheaths (to my knowledge) to possess 3 locking mechanisms. The pommel strap, the slide lock, and the back cover that comes over the pommel and gets cinched tight.Truly a jump worthy sheath. I own a few ESEEs and beat the shit out of them, they last. You mentionned "cheap steel", it doesn't matter what steel you use, if not properly treated, it will not perform the way it should. Rowen is the perfect example. The way they treat 1095 is above what others are doing. Love the BK7! Cheers

    Definitely a bangin list. You're the only person Ive seen with those scales for the Honey Badger, really dig em.
    But yea, that Junglas II is my next (and probably last) ESEE for a while. Not that ESEE did anything wrong, Ive just had alot of ESEE's lol. I'll be interested to see your review of that bad boy.

    The MSK, (seriously) there is no crazy knives if it works for someone,
    People assume if it’s a certain shape and size etc it’s crap,
    But that is dependent on those same people thinking that everyone else thinks and functions like them,
    Wrong, play to your strengths, if it works for you don’t let anyone tell you otherwise,
    I personally don’t like Tom Browns Tracker,
    But it was designed and used by someone who I have no doubt knows what he’s doing,
    If it works for him, or anyone else I’m cool with that, each to their own,
    I like the variety,
    Chris post that video, “Damn the Torpedos”
    Lol

    I don’t think d2 is all that bad and I don’t think a lot of other people do either. When people say it’s a cheap steel they don’t mean it sucks and you shouldn’t make a knife with it, I think what they mean is the steel is cheap and they do not want to pay over 300 bucks for a very cheap steel when there are an insane amount of other knives that can do just about everything this can do but the have better steal and look better and you can a lot of times also get them cheaper.

    My issue with the MSK is the price. Like you said it's D2, and the actual blade length is only about 4 1/2 inches. So tell me why on earth it so expensive, when I can get a Bark river or dark timber for a similar price with more versatility and better steel. I'm sure it is a cool fun knife to have and use, but saying it is a one tool option doesn't justify the the price tag, it's just incongruous.

    My thoughts on knives.
    My EDC knifes vary depending on where I’m going and what I’m doing. My going to Lowe’s and Walmart knifes are USUALLY either a Purple Spyderco Endura 4, or a Cold Steel Voyager 4” tanto blade.
    My working knives carry too I have a Kutmaster hawksbill and several “Sodbuster” pattern knives. One of those is an old Queen Steel knife the others are Case XX. I’ve had most of them for years.
    My wood craft, camping, hiking knives are various high quality sheath knives that I carry on my side, a Mora Companion, a Kepheart pattern knife that I made out of a truck leaf spring, a Leatherman, and a cheap paring knife (maybe Mercer brand). All of those I carry in, or on my Maxpedition jumbo side pack. (Yes That is a lot. I might eventually carry less). I carry so many knives, because I have had knives break.
    Sometimes I also carry an Ontario machete, or one of a couple machetes that are made in somewhere in South America. But I like the Ontario ones a little more because I have the ones with the D handle guard. But I’m happy with either.
    My defensive knives carry too much to give a direct answer. The shortest one is a 4inch Blade. Usually I like at least a 6 inch blade for “social work.” However, I do carry Cold Steel push daggers a lot. And I like the Cold Steel Recon and Voyagers in this application too. But I have many others. Slim daggers are my favorite type for this application. (Probably due to my training). But my requirements are a blade that is unlikely to break, has a very sharp edge, and does not have a slippery handle. I love my push daggers, it I always back them up.
    And I’m sure I have left something out. I do carry a Benchmade Osborne knife often.
    And of course I always have at least one firearm too . . ..
    Just my thoughts and experiences . . ..

    Hey Chris, let me give you a tip you will love! Any handle you want to Wilson wrap, coat in about 4 layers of plasti-dip, (the dip not the spray). over the Wilson wrap. The grip you get is amazing! Do each coat about 45 minutes apart and let the fourth coat dry about an hour, then pick it up and give it a nice squeeze and it will somewhat custom form to your hand. Then let it dry for 24 hours. You will LOVE the results of this mod on any handle you want to Wilson wrap!
