I like how you walk through your selection process, it shows what your thought process is. I hope other yourubers who do these videos follow this process, it makes the video more interesting.
Thank you for recommending the Terävä Jääkäripuukko series. Former dealer. I already had a pile of Scandinavian knives/sheaths that I modified. Purchased both the 110 and 140. More than pleased. The sheaths are world class as well as the knives. If they had been available before I had worked with the other knives, I would have purchased multiple sets.
Hi Chris, another interesting video.... Let me start by saying I have not yet read any other comments so they will not influence me. Second, the choices were real easy for me becaue it is what I use. Sure I have a box of knives under my bed but I don't use all of them. Thrid, I know it won't surprise you but all of the knives I chose fall with you budget limitations - under $100
My Three Favorite Knives:
1) My old "Deerslayer" - it cost around $10 about 55 years ago. It goes with me everywhere. It has about a 5" blade with a flat grind and a modified conves secondary bevel. I am not sure of the steel but I know it is a high carbon steel. - maybe 1095 or a tool steel. The handle is now wrapped in hemp soaked in bee's wax. The case is the original but has been rebuilt a couple of times and has a homemade fero rod attached to it with a bank line wrap. This knife has traveled all over the wold with me.
2) My Jeff White "Bush Knife" - it cost $65 and I made my own case. It is hand made here in the USA of 1095 steel with a convex grind. I have owned in for about four years now. and it is a great woodscrafting knife. I have made several self-bows out of Honeysuckel using just this knife. It works great for skinning, butchering and camp chores as well. It is not as good as my "Deerslayer" for butchering and kitchen task but it is more than adaquate.
3) My "Becker BK-5" - Like all Becker kinves it needed a lot of mods. I had to strip all the black coating off, refiinish and patina the blade. and I added a 90 degree spine to the back of the blade. The case was way to cheap for me. It would not have lasted a week in woods so I made my own custom leather sheath. The blade is 7" and of 1095 carbon steel. It can be carried easily on the belt but is a little bigger than I like. It works well for woodscraft and kitchen chores and is a fair chopper - but I don't usually chop with my knives. If I need a draw-knife this is the one I use.

G'day Chris, It's not just because you are my inspiration in all things I do. ;) It's probably because I've been watching PM101 since the start. My favourite 3 fixed blades are, in fact, the exact same three that you ended up with at the conclusion of this fascinating video. My modified BK7 (that I learned to modify on PM101) The Bark River Bravo1 (that I discovered thanks to PM101) + {now I have 4 of the Bravo family and they are all awesome}. And, of course, Pete's 1911 Elite production model which, again, I first learned about on PM101 and ever since way back then I've been kicking myself that I didn't get in and buy one of Pete's customs B4 you and his gobsmacking talent helped make him one of the giants of the knife making world.

but here are my three favorites knives 1) gerber strongarm in coyote brown , 2) mora kansbol and 3) a cfk cutlery knife, 4.5 in. blade, in D2 steel

I only have 2 belt knives, my other fixed blades are neck knives--one could be a boot knife if H had the right sheath and boots to put it in. all the knives you showed are nothing but major awesomeness!! no doubt you had a tough choice for this vid

Great Video ! For a few decades I carried the Swiss Army Knife... And now it is a Back-UP Knife that resides in the pack. My EDC is the SOG Trident in Black TiNi with the seatbelt cutter that is great for cutting twine on bales of hay ! My Full-Tang Knife is the light weight light duty survival knife the SOG Seal Strike and when paired with the Light Weight Titanium Stove from Utah is a great combination ! The Seal Strike is carried on the Survival Belt and may need to add cordage to tie the tool to the thigh. And would like to add the M-16/AR-15 Bayonet for cutting through the "wire" and many other uses ! And my new addition for sometimes carried is the WSH Wood Sheep Hook from Tractor Supply that is cut down to a long Walking Cane size that has a few uses ! tjl
After many years and knives the Sospes keeps coming to mind. LT Wright, O1, six inch blade, 3/16" drop point.

I EDC the Jaakaripuuko 110. Always love it. Nothing will break it (unless its JoeX)

Great vid...I loved seeing the BK7 make a return. I also love cpm 3v steel knives with Z-Wear PM steel being the only steel I find to be much better. That said, I own a lot of the same knives by Bark River and LTWK and I love them all, but I still prefer my Becker BK2, BK7, and BK9 to any of the super steels...idk, they just perform better and stay sharper longer for me. Anyway, looking forward to the next vid.

Just a guess but perhaps one reason for the finger grooves on the macv could be so it's easy to tell blade orientation in the dark.??
So any of those knives pawn shop knives or did you buy all them straight out and second question what's the difference between a pawn shop knife and one that you would buy on the store considering maybe it's been used what would your altercations be in that

My 3 personal picks would be: #1 Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 (being the budget pick), #2 Bark River Bravo 1 LT in CPM Cru-Wear, and #3 Bark River Bushcrafter.
I'm just taking a shot here about that SOG copy but I wonder if they could have made such a odd shaped finger coils to make sure they have the positive feel of which way the blade edge is pointing in the dark jungle in combat situations possibly. Like the Ka-Bar I could see how that could get turned around in a combat situation or wet hands and somewhere to be trying to slice with the spine of the blade rather than the cutting edge...
Chris long time subscriber. I gotta tell you the bk7 may be the best budget knife however, I have a Schrade SCHF52 that I would gladly purchase over the bk7. Dollar for dollar and pound for pound the Schrade SCHF52 is the best budget knife on the planet.
What is the name and manufacturer of the first knife you eliminate, the one with the black and orange sheath and orange handle ? Is that the standard sheath that comes with the blade ?
One reason to have finger grooves on a combat knife is so in the dark one knows which way the blade is facing. Of course the obvious reasons would be to have a more secure purchase of the knife
For a budget belt/camp/bushcraft knife you should look at and review the GCS Custom 170 it meets all the requirements ... my best all around knife

BK7 you'd have to choose for the heavy duty work horse stuff.
1911 Elite because it's a bucket list knife second only after the DT Honey Badger.
3rd would be the Bark River Bushcrafter because it's the smallest for all the finer tasks and also in 3V.
A little late to the party, but I would go with a Mora Kansbol for my budget option, LTW Genesis and BHK Battlelore.

I thought about this for the last couple days. Budget KNIFE-SPEC ONTARIO SP-10. Second knife- TOPS SXB. Third knife-Benchmade Bushcrafter S30V. That's me. I'm a big guy. My SP10 is 16yrs going strong. If I had a bonus I'd choose my Cold Steel SRK CPM3V
I probably should have included the SXB with this, but it walks the line between a primary and large knife.
Just want to throw out there that I edc a ltwk great plainsman and it's Will's fault. One of you guys should do a review on it

For me if I had to choose just one primary belt knife it'd be something in the 7"- 9" range. This is specifically for use in the backcountry, not EDC, but when I'm in the backcountry I don't carry just one knife. I carry 4...at least. (I often carry 7 all total, counting the Tool Logic Survival Card & Victorinox Swiss Card Lite that I keep in my wallet for emergencies but don't actually use.) Because of this I don't worry too much about how well my belt knife works for small fine carving tasks. I choose one that can do fine tasks if absolutely necessary, but that's not what I use it for. I use my neck knife, my 'bushcraft knife', for that. That's what it's for. That's why I carry it. My primary belt knife is my big knife. It's used for doing big knife stuff, stuff like chopping, batoning & such, and my current favorite is my Tops Tahoma Field Knife with the unsharpened top edge. It does what I need it to do, and it does it well.
My main loadout typically includes my Tops Tahoma Field Knife on my belt, my Bark River Ultralight Bushcrafter around my neck, my Leatherman Charge TTi on my belt and my Victorinox Swisschamp in my pocket. I often have a Kershaw Blur (S30V) clipped into my pocket as well, but that's more out of habit than anything else. In the backcountry it gets kitchen duty, and that recurve blade has a lot of belly that makes it a pretty good skinner too. They're not all made out of the fancy super steels, but they get the job done.
I had to rewind the video when I heard BK7 ....i thought I was hearing things lol Great video and great choices. I think I would have made some of the same choices. I think the outback looks awesome and Jessmuk maybe one of the most awesome and unique bushcraft blades. The more in look at the sospes the more I like it so many great knives and some many choices this is tough to choose.
bark river aurora II, mora (pick your flavor i like the one with the firesteel in the handle, cause why not), spartan nyx (that third one is freaking hard)

in order, cheapest to most expensive. Mora Heavy duty companion, Buck Pathfinder, from the early 80s, and last Cold Steel Recon Tanto. What, you don't have any Mora's? As a hunter and fisherman I will always choose a short bade with sharp point for dressing out small game and fish, thus my first pick for me was my Mora. The Pathfinder is a longer blade and a good slicer. The Recon Tanto, is a combat knife but also heavy enough to chop "Small" branches and split small wood.

Choosing only 3 is a challenge, but so much depends on outside conditions. If the knives were to be ALL I had, at least one would be a big rugged chopper. If I knew I'd have a saw and hatchet, I'd lean more strongly toward smaller food preparation and carving knives. But you can't own too many knives. 😃

Will's choices are definitely more my style personally. I don't like huge knives. If I'm going to need to chop, I'm more likely to carry a Mora/Bark River style belt knife and a machete.

My budget knife would be any Mora second BK Canadian Special and third Lyon Steel M5 with my neck knife being LT Wright Patriot. Thats my choice's and I'm sticking to them. But that William Collins my O my I'm not sure I could kick that one out lol :-). I have to admit the young buck picked the best one to keep over all of them on your mat though.

In my collection I would go with Mora Garberg as budget knife, BRKT Wilderness Explorer and LT Wright Trekker as fancy ones. I have a William Collins WBK on the production line but it will be my neck knife to be close to my heart.
In your pile (not collection because I know you have many more than these) I will go with Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 (man I had too google its spell) as budget knife. LT Wright Sospes and BRKT Bushcrafter as heavy champs.
The MAC is a fighting knife by design and the handle is designed to be proficient in specific grips....if not for the BK chopping ability,the MAC would be my "go-to" knife of choice as far as the big blades.
I really wish there was a Honey Badger in the mix!

I only use 3 primary belt knives anyway. Thing is - all of them are above $100:
JX2 (235 dollars)
LTWK Next Gen (135 dollars)
Tlim Bushcrafter (120 euro) - I can cheat a little here, because you can buy a micarta scales version, without sheath, for 75 euro (same design, but mine is teak wood scales, mosaic pins, leather sheath).
My three choices on what I own would be LTWK Gen 6, LTWK Jessmuk C and Barkriver Squad leader. WOW that was a tough one.....let me think about this again....oh I forgot budget for budget maybe Gerber Strong Arm.

I have not field tested it yet but first impressions its a great blade I like to pair it with my Jessmuk C at this time that would be my current system. When I saw your Blade Show review of them I was like I need both of those blades and they are both awesome.

If the Sospes came in 3v I would buy 3 one for my self and one for each of my kids. It's the best looking knife I've seen but I dislike o1 tool steel to bad. Come on Will get LT to make them in 3v!!!

Here's a question (for anyone who wants to answer it): what is a good primary belt knife with a 5"- 8" blade -- a 'survival knife' so to speak -- for use in a saltwater environment? I've been looking at getting a good belt knife in stainless steel, but I just haven't really found anything that I like just yet.

Ultimately I ended up going with a Blackbird SK-5 from Ontario. It's still not a favorite knife, but it works all right.

Chris, you should give Condor K-Tact Kukri a try. With some simple mods it becomes a really usefull bush-whacking-tool!!
If someone sends me one. I've never really been to comfortable with kukris though. But if I WAS going to get one, that's probably the one I'd go for.
It is just a simple working tool but it works great. The handle from condors kukri fitted to Cold Steels Ghurkha khukri would be fenomenally good! What do you think?

Hmm, each to their own, but if I had to choose between a standard (or even pimped) BK *add any number* and a Terava Puukko, I'd choose the Puukko any time. Interesting video though.
