Here is what my dad used to say: The benefit of four wheel drive is it helps you to get stuck further from the highway.
Cars with permanent AWD/4WD just mean to most, if the weathers bad, you are just going to have a faster crash.
@@dartmoordave Most vehicles I see in the ditches after a snow storm are AWD/4WD most people dont know that neither really help when turning or stopping.

Maybe setup with a massive motorhome or intermodal office trailer. After that it's just a matter of figuring out how to power everything and what tow vehicles to have posted there.

Man, Lizzy has come such a long way in the Recovery business. I remember the deer in headlights look when she first started, now she needs basically no direction and gets it done. Good job Lizzy, of course you have learned from the best!

For the life of me, I DO NOT understand why he hired Lizzie!!! She is useless. If I were stuck and I called Matt, I certainly wouldn't want that stupid little girl behind the wheel. 80 something year old Ed would be more effective.

Being stuck in a particular course of action can make for great video. Gas pull, let off gas,- Gas pull, let off gas. Until you set up the computer, one knows you have to have to have a little more throttle until you get that fixed, but once you're use to doing things a certain way, that's the way it's gonna be, Back to the garage, YAY!
Matt Hold down the traction control botton on the Toyota until all the nannies are turned off. Then the brakes won't be fighting the pull. You can look it up on TH-cam. If you hold the traction control button down long enough it will turn off stability control, traction control, and engage limited-slip

You need to be in 4hi and neutral for the Tundra to switch into 4lo, if you try to switch it while not already in 4hi and neutral it will flash a code.

@@sledforpeace not true you can shift the tcase into 4 hi on the fly in my OBS powerstroke and to go 4lo you only have to be stopped not necessarily in neutral.

@@carmineredd1198 seat belts front and rear (Unless medically exempt) been in UK and Europe for years. If passenger is under 16 , driver is responsible. Clunk Clik every trip. Also Baby seat and booster rules dependent on age, but all my lot are old enough I don't have to worry.
I may have commented on that a video ago. I mean a sudden stop in just 20mph in that morvair and you'll have a bad day without belt.

Hopefully Lizzie will never be benefitted by wearing a seat belt (by never being in a crash lol), so the reward needs to be extrinsic, but Matt will be benefited directly by not sitting in the sun with no AC waiting for Jamie to bring him gas, so the reward is intrinsic!
My favorite part of Matt’s team is the sense of humor with each other. 100 degrees on a tough day and you all are still laughing with each other. Such a rare quality these days. You are a awesome family.

Y'see, it's Toyota TUNDRA.
According to Auntie Wiki, "tundra is a type of biome where the tree growth is hindered by low temperatures and short growing seasons"; " Arctic tundra occurs in the far Northern Hemisphere, north of the taiga belt. The word "tundra" usually refers only to the areas where the subsoil is permafrost, or permanently frozen soil". See? TUNDRA, not "sand dessert". ;-)

Last time I was in sand hollow I found a dozen rice krispie treats and some trail mix on the trail... Nice score Trevor.

Been watching your recoveries on the sand, and i can't stop thinking how easy it would be on a medium/small (60-70hp) 4x4 farm tractor to pull those cars off the sand

There is something addictive about watching that Morrvair work.......There's a brutal, no mercy, horrendous ripping on the rope, she digs in, and with a primal roar of rage begins relocating all the sand in the immediate area.........

Toyota always have a hard time going into 4wd or 4lo or lock the rear if you don't do it in neutral or park and if you haven't done it in awhile it takes a few tries for 4lo or using the locker. It's annoying but once you learn that and exercise it once a month even if you don't move it will work every time.
I agree! i have pulled a couple of Tundras out of the sand here in New Mexico. It seemed to be a case of the owners not knowing how to handle all the quirks they have.
I agree with 4LO and lockers because it likes you to be on level ground but 4WD high I've never had issues switching to if I was stuck.
I use to fly Lear Jets and I flew Rodney Dangerfield multiple times. Sometimes I wished he had an on/off switch. He was definitely a very funny guy.

That truck was a tough pull, it seemed every time they were spinning the back wheels the truck would bury itself. Glad you have AC now in the moorvair!

The problem with newer electronic transfercase shifters is one of the many reasons why the XJ is a great platform. Manual shifters are the best.

Out in Pismo. The hardest pull I've had to do was a newer Toyota 4runner, that thing was a sand anchor. Truck and trailers, were easier
Pismo sand can be pretty soft as well sometimes. The biggest error people make is not airing down. I air down my truck and it takes me everywhere I want to go. You get people rolling out there with low profile tires and full air pressure and they sink like an anchor lol.
I respect the camera operators because 1) on this channel they get amazing angles and views and 2) they do it while running! Just imagine what that cardio fitness would do in a _partner._ ;)
Pre job fuels stops are the way to go! Usually followed by post job fuel stops, and then pre job fuel stops again before the next one!

I love Trevor's quick references and jokes. Like few episodes back he referenced a French performer Marcel Marceau. I don't think anyone got it, but I just love his quick witted references.
The Toyotas want to be in neutral when switching the 4wd on unless the vehicle is moving with all 4 wheels spinning, if it fails to shift when you try it gives up to prevent transfer case damage. Not the most convenient thing in the world but does save the transfer case from getting damaged. Once you know how to use it it's not a problem
Yup. If you even try 4 low without being in neutral (obviously stopped), it'll flash until you start over. I shift to 4hi in Tacoma going 55+ with no problem.

@@MacGyver-1 Same here! I would really love if the computer would let the auto use 5th and 6th in low range.... I'm sure Toyota had a reason, but I can't figure out why..... Deep snow, in a pasture is much more fun in 4low, but tops out at 55 or so... LOL
4WD should be used once a month in a Toyota to make sure the solenoid works.

Without watching the video, I knew a guy who was an army instructor for trucks. One of the tests was climbing up a sandy hill. To everyone he explained how to drive up the hill. Most guys would get stuck, most women would drive up the hill in one go. Simply because they exactly followe dthe instructions given.
Exactly why I have always found women to be better students of gunnery. They have fewer bad habits to unlearn.
Good thing you said most because Lizzy has been told multiple times to keep the wheels straight and yet she does not as seen in the above video.

Those Tundras are very heavy for half ton trucks. Not surprised it took a lot of pulls since the 4WD wasn't working.

Lizzie is getting some mad reverse driving skills driving in reverse at high speed. Anybody that thinks it is easy ought to try it sometime, especially in dirt! And on the end of a rope where you do not have control of the speed. Matt is priming her for derby driving!!
Trust me, from all her time with horses, going backwards in a car is a dream.
It's cool seeing the sand kick up a 2:28 and 2:35 when the Morrvairs transmission shifts, that's horsepower!

Toyota 4WD trucks from the 1980s never broke. Too bad they did not keep the same quality control. Good job Matt! That Trevor is an electrical stud!
More a problem on engineering than qc.

@@zachsteele6964 I have seen many with transfer case issues. A couple on the trail and one on my street. And ask a Toyota mechanic about their quality.
I have a "one owner" 1989 X Cab 3.0 W/ 344K loving miles...always starts..only let me down once when transfer case bled out all the fluid from a underwater rock 10 miles from pavement...so she brought be home in 2wd just for fun
And then a guy in a corvair rescued me, talk about that story.
Just started watching your channel and I’m enjoying seeing southern Utah and your crew. We use to travel out to Vegas and head up to Cedar City and across Utah to four corners then down to Albuquerque regularly. All beautiful country. Miss it!!

I’ve been in St. George for along time! Believe me, any stock or close to stock tired 4wd is going to get stuck at sand hollow. Matt’s future is secure.

This is the difference between someone with the proper equipment, and someone with the professional knowledge, you can have all the upgrades in the world on your vehicle, but if you dont have the knowledge, it dont mean squat.

Thanks for the Great Entertainment.
Bit of a Tip with the A/C Idle up setup you've got going on there.
You should wire the A/C Signal input to the ECU from the Wire that controls the Compressor Clutch directly (or it's relay) rather than to your A/C switch,
That way the idle up is ONLY active when the Clutch is actually engaged and will relax when it is not.
This is so that when the AC system reaches its set high side pressure and the Clutch kicks out,
the idle does not go through the roof due to the reduction on load in the engine while the ECU is still bumping the idle.
A Properly working A/C System should Cycle the Compressor on and off in somewhat of a regular fashion to maintain optimal refrigerant pressure balance when cooling is requested.
(if it's Not then your system has issues!)
This is how Most Factory systems are done and should improve driveability.
Additionally, Idle speed with A/C Active *Should* be Higher than when it is not, typically by a few hundred RPM. (on my Car it adds about 200-300 rpm on top of the base hot idle).
Two reasons for this:
1. Higher Idle speed means the A/C works more effectively when sitting Still.
2. The A/C System Consumes a fair bit of Electrical power (AC Clutch + Interior Blower + Radiator Fans), and the Alternator may not be able to adequately keep up with the extra demand at low idle, and even if it manages to, the extra field current required and the lower cooling it gets a low idle puts you at risk of overheating it if sustained for periods of time.
Better Yet, IF Your ECU Supports being able to control the A/C Clutch itself, when given a demand signal by the AC Control system, then you should do so.
Idea of this is that the ECU will only allow the Clutch to engage when things are normal and will Deny the A/C Clutch request if appropriate (eg Engine getting HOT, or Engine stalled / cranking).
This is what most OEM Setups do, and You'll notice it when you start the vehicle, that the ECU delays the A/C clutch engagement for a few moments after start up until the idle stabilises.

when i was a kid we used to play a game we called lets go get stuck we would go were we knew we would get stuck and then get our selfes out i still play that game 25 years later also i have 188000acers of sand and rock out side my door to play in
i learned a valuable lesson this summer though dont play lets get stuck when its 115 outside its not as much fun

Make the tires straight when towing
The sand makes it nearly impossible to feel what the front tires are doing. The feedback isn't there.

I think Lizzie's ability and her responsibility plus her overall behavior is wonderful for her age and she's a credit to her parents, Matt's attitude is rubbing off on her too and that'll help her all through any difficulties in her future. God Bless all of you & keep you safe.
