After 30+ years of desert wheeling, things I have learned from Matt:
1. Kinetic ropes are the shizz
2. NEVER unhook the trailer
3. Corvairs are good for something other than chicken coops
And wheel with a buddy or/and a winch.
4. Bring the right tire for the terrain and air down. Also bring a air compressor of some sort for the trip out.

I'm sharing this little story because I appreciate this channel and the work you guys do so much!
My parents, my brother, and I used to go on long road trips over the summers in our truck + fifth wheel. Way back before GPS was as good and user-friendly as it is now, my dad decided to take a sketchy road in California that was definitely not suitable for such a long rig. No guardrails, one lane, unpaved, no cell service, and it was hot, hot, hot. At one point, while inching along on a curve, the road crumbled under the tires on the fifth wheel and my dad had to gun it to keep us from all following the trailer down into the valley. There wasn't anywhere to turn around, not even at the bottom where we came to a narrow bridge that we couldn't even pass because we were too long. I'll spare some of the other details, but we ended up being able to call a tow service to rescue us. There was no way he could tow us out, so that amazing man backed up the entire rig all the way back to the main road, including the same spot where the road gave way. I'm sure my dad paid a pretty penny that day, but I've never seen him so thankful in all my life. Keep up the amazing work, y'all!
This video was of me 2 1/2 years ago. These guys were an answer to our prayers in our time of need. I really appreciate them coming all the way out to rescue us. It proves to me that prayer works! Thanks Matt and team.

The Cainville/Factory Butte area (where they were in the vid) is one of the best kept secrets in Ut. While everyone else is overpopulating Moab and Zion, you can still find solitude in that part of the world.
That's how I feel as a Houstonian. I lived in Washington state for 3 years in the army, did not want to come home...course now I'm glad I did, but still...I tried not to.
@@shullln I was just out in Moab, and yeah especially near town it was busy. Except for when I went to Arches National Park, I stayed away from town and all the commotion.
Each part of the US has its own beauty. As a West coast resident I will say the scale of the landscape out here is amazing. Large desert basins that span tens of miles, enormous granite mountains and their associated valleys and rivers, and the vast coastline of the Pacific. It's all so big it makes you feel so small. I mean, driving hours in a West coast state leaves you in the same state most of the time. If you start at the Southern tip of California you have to drive 12 to 14 hours straight just to get the the Northern border!
Matt meets the customer and his first words are "what's your dog's name?" Haha
One of the reliable clues to picking a good mate or babysitter for your children. Watch how they treat animals. May work in choosing a towing company? Walk in 20 miles with your pet before hiring? Scratch that. Just be prepared by watching for you local towing videos on TH-cam?
Matt: "Sorry, your tow is too far away... wait a sec, you have a dog?!?.. I'm on my way!"

Your customer answered a question that I have had for a while. "Why do they call you to come from over 300 miles away to do a recovery? Don't they have recovery people near lake Powell?". The answer is that they must have on road wrecker service but no one with the skills and equipment that Matt and his team have for off road recovery. Good work as always Team!
True genuine folks to travel that far, gives you faith in humans helping those in need. Plus other companies loss is your gain. Pat on the back matt and crew, had a good laugh as well.

Sure, I love watching the all the different missions and interesting terrain, challenges and circumstances, but what really keeps me coming back is how good natured, helpful and kind you all are. I live in Utah and drive to Denver and Reno fairly often and driving through Nevada and Wyoming give you an idea of how big this country is.
Indeed! There are vast areas in the SW where you can drive for hours with little or no available help. We are lucky to have Matt and his team only a phone call away.
I drive from Fresno California to Lincoln Nebraska to visit my children and grandchildren at least once a year with my Tacoma, and Utah is the only state I can make it across without stopping for gas. Even towing a trailer I can make it from Evanston to Wendover on a fillup.
Never stop in Reno for gas, Fernley prices are always lower. TireRack is between Reno and Fernley, but how I know that is another story.

Bullfrog, I would argue, is one of the most isolated places in America. You're about four driving hours from any sort of real services, and depending on where you are in the area, two driving hours away from cellphone service. It is a beautiful, yet desolate area.
Props to you guys for driving all the way out there to help some people out. The fact that you had to in the first place is testament to just how isolated that region is.
Appreciated the Burr Trail and Hwy 12 ride along, definitely should have included more footage from that part of the drive back and maybe filmed the entire drive up the Burr Trail Switchbacks with different camera angles. That area is by far one of the most scenic parts of the United States, let alone Utah.
No one else wanted to go as they were afraid to get stuck, and U guys just pop them out! Great stuff!

It kind of makes me proud to ‘know’ Matt and his crew when the customer tells how many rescuers that wouldn’t come out to rescue them.
You’re so right about that trail and one of the most beautiful parts of Utah ! There’s a spot in between Bicknell and Torrey where the ranchers fence goes straight over an old rusted car out in the field !
In the 70’s , even the road between Escalante and Boulder was not paved and I was up there in my Datsun pick up in grader ruts half as deep as the truck ! The Aspens were beautiful.
The traverse took about 2 hours more than I expected!
I’ll never forget the first time I sunk a tire in that red powder and got stuck on our picnic . Out of the blue a young guy showed up in a rusty old Farm Pick-up , lassoed my bumper with a sisal rope and pulled us out.
That Utah hospitality kept good memories of that trip alive in my mind and when I saw you guys on that razorback it all came back !

Humility is sweet and a welcome change to what a lot of us see, but you and your entourage exude that in spades!! To this family you were saints sent from heaven. I can imagine their desperation. You swept in with a calm hand and delivered the freedom they were desperately seeking. Then gave them a couple joyrides to top it off. You guys are simply the Best of what this country needs!! 14 hours to the rescue!!

Riding that narrow highway on that ridge reminds me of back in the day when I drove on it.
Really never have "fear" when driving along steep drop-offs, but that particular stretch on that ridge did indeed raise the hair on the back of my neck.

It wasn’t long after I left the Hogsback that I blew a tire. All I could think was holy curmoley, what if that had happened an hour earlier?
I've tried to tell people about that stretch of 12 when they complain or freak out on other roads way less sketch. I drove up and down it a couple times on my last trip to that area, once was at night, no fun.
Never thought I'd watch a MORR video and come away with a Carpenter's song stuck in my head. Thanks, Trevor. 😂

Loved this video. I’m 83 and have spent many hours 4-wheelin’ the Mojave Desert. I can ‘cap’ on Matt however he is a good guy and good at what he does. I judge a Man by his Family and Matt has done a fine job. JC🌵
I'm always shocked with how far your willing to drive to save a motorist. 6.5 hours 1 way . You're incredible Matt.. It's no wonder why your reputation is known to everyone in your state and nearby states.
My mouth dropped open when you said you were taking the Burr Trail. I thought, "What are they thinking?". Glad you made it back. You gotta love Southern Utah for it's trails and it's scenery, but like you know, sometimes ya gotta get off-Road. Safe travels my friend.
Honestly it's the dynamic of everyone that makes these so cool. Out of all the episodes I've only seen Matt get frustrated once which really tells alot about his character.

Surprisingly that was one of the easier looking trailer re hitch jobs that had ever happened. Great job to the team. Always better to call someone with the experience too
Wow, I live in the UP of Michigan & I've been on the bullfrog highway a half dozen times. You should have went over to the the Hells Backbone Grill where the Burr Trail ends at highway 12. Some of the best food you'll ever eat. All organic and just fantastic. Hwy 12 IS the most beautiful drive in the US.

Out on their own... that is just cruel, insensitive and lacking in compassion to leave a family out in the desert like that. You guys show more humanity thatn you realize while having fun and doing your work. Kudos guys, Gals and Ed... don't forget the dogs LOL.

I've done a LOT of offroading in the west. Prior planning ( and proper equipment) most of these folks are unprepared and made bad decisions.
My 72 K5 Blazer never broke on a Colorado trail, nor my Toyota 4wd pickup anywhere.
Hi-lift jack, tire chains, straps, come-a-longs, chainsaw, WATER, food etc. Most important, Toyota or Chevy...

Lizzy has the same attitude I did as a courier: while at idle, rest. Nothing can be accomplished by staying alert, so conserve energy... Because you'll probably need it later.
One of the simpler videos you've released but for some reason it's one of my favorite recovery episodes. Might have been the 12-hour round trip aspect and your camaraderie as four friends (and family).
I agree too with HighLonesomeRob... and although I've not yet found the need to use it (not in the recovery biz) yet, K.R.s are the shizz! It is near-miraculous how with the right tug the stuck vee-hickular just pops right up and out. 'MAZIN'. Always like Corvairs, having been a youth during their production. Just not seen too many wagons.

We had planned on visiting and exploring Southern Utah 3 yrs ago but havent made it yet. You and your channel keep adding places to see to my bucket list. Oh, and also places and things not to do so I wont have to call Matt’s Offroad Recovery. Heck, I may have to move to Utah and spent an entire year just exploring in the Jeep... Surely, this was an EXPENSIVE recovery. I still say that I'd never leave the blacktop if I was pulling a camper in Utah.

If you've never been there, the dirt turned into a peanut buttery substance when it gets wet. It's nasty. We almost got caught in the Canyonland but luckily made it back to 191 just as it started to come down harder.
I always disconnect, then drive the road i plan to take. Don't need no surprises. And if the road really looks sketchy, I'll walk it first so I don't get my truck stuck.
People who live in Utah pull some of the biggest rigs into places most people would not believe. If it's not right where they want to be it's very close. When you go hunting in the mountains you get in on a nasty road and it's like WTF who would pull something that expensive and big into here

We took a trip to Utah last week and passed by your shop to see if we would see you guys. We saw Trevor coming out of his truck but we where too shy and didn’t want to bother him. Lol.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought to do this if I ever was in Utah.
I did the exact same think 1 month ago heading back to California. I was glad I was able to see the corvair. Which is everything as described on the channel. Quite the masterpiece. They were open but the gate was closed. Didn't want to bother but just wanted to see if they sold any merch at the shop. Love the channel.
I stopped by to say hi last summer, they were all out, so I took a pic with my rig next to the legendary Banana 💪🏼
You have to admit, it was scenic! No way could they charge enough to cover the actual costs of the recovery! Just sign over one of the vehicles to MORR and it's even.

Utah is amazing where you can go from northern dessert to high alpine country in Uintas to rock formations in Moab to amazing places like St George red rock it has tons to offer great video thank you keep them coming

completely different cars and crew experience. that costs a lot. Matt said in one video that most of the offroad people who gets stuck are helped by others successfully, and do not need company help. unless those borked razors with ripped off wheels :D
So probably not enough work for most companies to be wort it to do offroad stuff? Actual towing and recovery on road is "always on job" comparatively. at least the guy I know, who towed my stuff, said he has never lacked any work to trailer broken down or crashed cars (works with small platform truck and an suv for different jobs).

Holy cow, at the end, the narrow pass. I’ve been there. I did a hiking trip into escalante with a school group and was snowing hard when we were on that road to the trailhead and that road was covered in snow. Next day it rained and we got hit with flash floods before entering little death hollow.

I was there in the spring with my quad and it seemed like every 5 minutes I had to stop to take in the beauty. There is also much more water there than I am used to.
I can't imagine what this recovery cost, but it made for an awesome video!

Somewhere in the magnitude of $1000 for salaries alone for this recovery. Then there is about $600 for mileage. Hauling them out costs another $500. Matt's expertise isn't cheap and adds to that. I'll bet this was a $3000 recovery -- and worth every penny.
@@MichaelSteeves Yup at least 2 grand I'm sure. Don't forget there are only three actual crew and a cameraman whose wages you can't count in the cost to the customer. I'd say more like 600 to 700 in wages.
The average company would do it with 2 guys, and charge about $2500. My guess would be that TH-cam allows him to charge considerably less.
@@marvindebot3264 overhead and insurance bill out rate would be around $65 an hour for one guy. Time and a half after 8. 14 hour day. $1100 per guy is what I'd charge
I missed the road sign near the end and backed it up the video to read it 😱, towing a trailer and having steep hills and sharp curves isn't the best of combinations. Another thing, having NEVER been to Utah, should you 'accidentally leave in more scenery in the video, I would not complain.
