Does killing too many enemies ruin immersion in video games?

  • subscribe 2 bokey. tbh i'd rather make 10 vids than write 1 description of a video. these stink. also no music this time so lmk what you think. to me, games don't really need to justify everything. games always give that space for suspension of disbelief in order to get away with some mechanics that simply make it more playable and fun. but yeah nathan drake is a sociopath

    The original mafia handled it much better than the remake. Enemies were fewer and the player shared the same mechanics and health as the enemies. This made each gunfight feel like a life or death situation

    i remember when i was playing RDR2 i had to take breaks from the main missions because it was 100% shooty shoots, something happens? yeah shootout, you try to do something? guess what? its going to fail and you're going to engage in a shootout, you do X? yes, shootout!
    it took me a full month to finish the game, i kept playing side quests and free roaming as i was just sick of all the shooting 99% of the time

    I think a solution for more grounded games would be just making killing more difficult.. enemy numbers lower.. but having more ways to deal with the situation, like.. more gettaway options. In RDR 3 we could die with two to three shots.. (one if it's in the head or chest) but make being shot more difficult.. guns could be jankier.. and so on. Games with this level of realism tho would need to have more options to add fun. Nom lethal beat downs might help being coherent with the characters but still.. being able to take down hundreds of people is not reallistic as well.. in terms of power. I think that another thing that can be done is making the cutscenes crazier during action. Like.. Arthur Morgan could "dead eye" agaisnt like 4 or 5 guys in a cutscene.. like Clint Eastwood in A fistfull of dollars, the famous scene where he kills 3 or 4 guys in a second. It's not that unrrealistic.. look at Bob Munden.. real life man who has basically this level of skill.. why can't a game push that a little more? Anyway.. would be interesting to test this.

    Far Cry 3 handled this dilemma that best by showing the protagonist Jason Brody going from physically recoiling from his first self-defense kill to celebrating and cheering for each kill he gets. The islands made him go from a standard adrenaline junkie to a murdering sociopath.

    • @bokey_1da
      @bokey_1da  ปีที่แล้ว

      love this take. people may say that Far Cry 3 isn't immersive or realistic due to mass amount of killing for this reason (how he switches from deeply sympathetic/traumatized and switches almost instantly) but then when you think of it like, "imagine being in a place like the islands that CAN make you this crazy, this quickly" is a much cooler way at looking at things like this

    Theres not a single day that i dont think about this. Only issue that I have with RDR 2. These last two modern warfare games handled it pretty nicely. Clean House has like... 10 enemies? Better "gore" and animations so you get a better feedback when hitting someone, and less enemies. That would be great.

    • @bokey_1da
      @bokey_1da  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wanted to include that mission SO bad for this video. Clean House in MW19 was incredible

  • @dafff08
    @dafff08 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    this was one thing that bothered my with rdr2.
    you are in the middle of nowhere and not a single soul in sight except for the 5 guys inside the *open* camp.
    as soon the first shot gets fired an army of enemies plops out of nowhere.
    this makes it worse since rdr2 is a realism focused game with focus on details.
    and then you have these artificially dragged out shooting scenes that break the world because muh "epic gun battles".
    it wouldnt be such a problem if this wouldnt be a theme for pretty much *every* mission that involves shooting.
    lets say we HAVE a big base with many buildings and already pre spawned enmies, then you are like, "holy cow, this will end in a massive shootout".
    but if its a small camp it doesnt make any sense getting chased down by an army of a size of an entire small city.

    I feel like, at least out of all the GTA games, GTA IV handled this issue the best. The character is obviously deranged, as living through a hellish war that killed all of his friends forced him to be, so killing randomly not phasing him isn't much of a stretch. To add to that, the amount of enemies you actually face, at least if i remember correctly, isn't too high, making the conflicts feel believable (taking into account that a war veteran would be a much better shot/fighter than random gangsters). The story also features characters that aren't trrated as side characters, and that interact with the player regularly.

    It's a buzz word...well phrase used by people so often it has lost it's meaning (kind of like most things on the internet), most people don't care. The only way to change it would probably force a change that would make some games unrecognizable, it wouldn't be worth it to make such a small group who care happy.

    • @bokey_1da
