I bought a 2020 Vmax on October 2nd. I have 1,100 miles on it and I really love the bike. It is cold now and messing up my fun but still living the dream on a warm day.
Think about making decat - if you don't hear decated one, you never hear real vmax. I made decat + i make custom mufflers witch "toce" ends. And short, blue flames, from 4 ends pipes indepedently.
I feel like TH-cam is feeling my love for grown-folk reviews, Scotty. I like reviews that tell the good stuff not just 0-60 and horsepower garbage everyone repeats.
When I first got this motorcycle and opened up the throttle, I thought it was perfect. I didn't feel overwhelmed at all. It felt like what I thought a motorcycle should feel like. It felt like what I had been trying to modify my other motorcycles to perform like.
I'm 52 and have been wanting a V Max since 1985. I'm finally going to go look at one in Orlando this weekend and hopefully purchase! Great review of an amazing motorcycle that has been discontinued and will now pass into the history books of the greatest bikes ever made.. Thank you, Jeff!
I gotta say I was struggling with my 2019 being too sluggish in the handling until I saw your video on tire pressures. From the dealer they not only had my tires at 36 lbs but it is not clear in the manual so I always ran it at 36lbs. Once I upped it to 42 lbs per tire it became a different beast in the corners. It went from wanting to stand up in corners to effortless in corners. It handles incredibly well now!
I have a 2009 VMAX which I bought new in 2009. This is the best bike that I have ever owned. I'm 67 years old so this is probably the last bike that I will own. Here are a few comments that I have to amplify on your video. * Jacking. I can't feel this jacking effect that some people mention and I've owned about 20 motorcycles. This is one of those things that people repeat because they've heard it before. It handles great for its size and weight and as well as any chain drive bike that I've ridden. * Vibration. Did you know that Yamaha intentionally left some vibration in the engine? They could have completely eliminated it with a different counter-balancer but their consumer studies indicated that people wanted to feel a certain amount of vibration so a small amount was left in. It is not objectionable in any way. * 6th gear. I still think a 6th gear would be useful to improve fuel economy on the highway. A lower engine speed reduces pumping losses and thus fuel economy. * Fuel tank. A bigger fuel tank would definitely be appreciated. * Sticker. You can remove that ugly safety sticker from your top cover very simply. Heat it up with a hair dryer for a few minutes. This will loosen the glue and you can peel it right off with no residue remaining. I did this the first day that I owned mine. * Cruise control. I really wish this bike had cruise control. The sad thing is that it would have cost almost nothing to incorporate it. It already has speed sensors on the wheels and throttle by wire. The only additional items needed would be 2 push buttons on the handlebars and software. * Oil pressure gauge. I really wish that the bike had an oil pressure idiot light. It only has an oil level idiot light. * Not a cruiser. This bike is really not a cruiser. It is more accurately described as a naked standard which is the way almost all bikes were before about 1985. A cruiser's main feature is a very low seat with forward controls that I hate. This bike has controls placed just below the rider with the rider leaning slightly forward. All this makes for much better handling and control than cruiser-style controls.
Thanks for watching and adding additional thoughts. That jacking thing is coming from people who haven't ridden one. Now my Nighthawk 650 jacked the rear. But somewhere along the way, at least Yamaha, figured out a way to dispense of it. As far as the cruiser moniker, we may have to agree to disagree on that. When this bike first came out it was to compete with the V65 Magna, which was the first power cruiser. The term naked is a recent term that didn't exist back when we first started riding. Today's naked is the 1980s standard. The VMAX was more of a cruiser than a standard. Either way, we are both fortunate to have one, especially now that it just got the ax last week.
I thought I was the only one to find the "Only one forever" bike... I bought mine new in 91 and I am now 62... It is sitting in my living room as I type this...
Had a 85 vmax it was a beast back in the day. Have heard this model with a full exhaust and it sounded awesome. I kept the bike till 1990 no issues. From there I switched to sport bikes but always loved the vmax.
Really hard to find decent bike reviews. A little guys don't do their research when reviewing a bike. Just a lot of nonsense. You actually give detailed specs and good information on the bike. I've thought about reviewing several of my bikes and how I go out detailing and explaining overview of motorcycle is nearly identical to what you are saying. Well done 👏 man.
The VMax is rock solid and always was a bit old fashioned. Leave the LED toys and the TFT-multipurpose screen for the Generation Ipad generation, a VMax will be a special bike even after another 35 years. By then, the new bikers generation laughs about your "modern" style but the VMax, as dated as it may look to you today, will still be hailed. Maybe even more than today. It is one of a kind. Not wearing stylish fake jewels as signal indicators. I still own and ride my 1200 VMax. Could sell it for higher price then the ones that were "modified" for more modern looks back then. Guess why.
I have yet to meet a VMAX owner who hates or doesn't like their bike. Many of them were hard core "other brand" owners, and drove one of these once, and then after that one ride, would fester over the whole deal, and one day, wake up, and say screw it, I am getting one... Which is strange to witness, as one acquaintance I have, when you walk into his garage, there isn't a single bit of wall space that isn't consumed with that "other brand" of pictures, posters, fandom, galore, and to then see a VMAX sitting in the middle of all that.. LOL. backed up by a smile on their face. It doesn't even matter what age group it is, as I have seen all walks of life rolling these units and it doesn't mean that they now hate the other brands, by all means no, they still fancy the other brands, but, there is just something about this VMAX series, that is fitting for so many flavors. It looks mean, it looks classy, it is an exceptional cruiser, at the same time, can be a rocket ship. There is one guy, who purchased one of these wrecked, from a salvage yard, and turned it into a stunt bike, beings that is what he likes to do, by modifying a few things one typically does to make it safer to play on, not only for the rider, but the safety for the bike, in the event of laying it on its side, as that is something that happens all the time with these stunt riders (not my cup of tea, but to each their own). I met another guy, who drag races one of these, and completely chopped the day lights out of it, with all sorts of modified stuff. No, it is not the fastest thing on the drag strip, but, his comment was, "Nah, it isn't as fast as most of my other drag bikes, but, on this one, I feel more safe, due to how solid it feels on the strip." Don't get me wrong, this bike is stupid fast, you wouldn't catch me doing what he does, thinking I could do that, no way!!! The part I am rolling on the floor about, is the bank still owns this bank, no warranty anymore, and still should have had like a 2 to 3 years or something like that, and the first chance he got, started to modify it, hacking the ECM, upgraded fuel system, etc...Who does that kinda stuff? LOL... when the unit really doesn't need any mod's.. but that is a tinkerer for you...
Great overview and love that paint scheme! Just bought a 2nd Gen last week with a 240 rear tire kit. The prior owner added: Yamaha OEM saddlebags (rare), Rizoma Sport CNC black Aluminum Hand grips. Black ASV brake and clutch levers, Folding Blacked out mirrors, Black Soto Rear Sets, Low Profile Passenger Backrest (same as yours), Passenger Footrest Relocation Kit, Black luggage rack, Blacked out turn signal lenses, Black Handlebar, Black Side Covers, Black front fender supports and he included a motorcycle cover and a battery tender. Looks to be $5K in mods and upgrades... I'll be adding bar end mirrors and maybe a black wrap to the intake scoops. Been riding Harleys since 1980, still ride a black Terminator Fatboy. Picked up a 1997 Gen 1 VMAX a few years ago and turned it into a Mad Max naked bike. That is the hotrod for scaring the neighbors. Looks like I'll be keeping all three...
I will have a Max one day. I was a teen in the 80’s when the mighty Mac came alive. It’s been my dream bike since the day I first saw it. Once all the kids fly the coop, then I will have one.

This has been my dream bike for about 3 years now. i bought a honda magna 750 V4 and fell in love with v4 bikes. cant wait to own one of these my self.
I rode a 1994 Magna VF750C (house mate's motorcycle) during a 6-month assignment in Huntsville, AL this past year. I have owned a 1994 gen-1 V-max as well as a 2007 gen-1 V-Max in NY. The Magna was smooth and an OK fit, but I missed the occasional V-Boost rush. Now, I am back at home in NY (COVID-19 pandemic has us working remotely) and missing the warm Alabama weather for an opportune ride. The gen-2 is too tall for me. The gen-1 V-Max and Magna were good fitting with my short 29" in seam trousers.
I have loved that bike for over 30 years Maybe I should finally try one out. I agree with the five speed philosophy. It’s just really wide gearing from forth to fifth. So it effectively gives you the best of both worlds, acceleration and cruising ease. I had an old Harley with a spaced out for the gear and it very effective, for different reasons. Today a lot of people say any performance bike should be engineered like a crotch rocket and I just don’t agree with that thinking.

I have a Shaft Driven 2012 BMW K1600 Gt and never had a shaft drive jack sensation , and that BMW is unbelievably quick. My 2020 Ducati Panegali V4s with full Ak titanium exhaust with Race tune gives you the sensation of launch 🚀 you wouldn’t believe, liken it to a Cat shot that won’t stop until you back it off. I think the vmax is probably one of the best muscle cruisers you can buy. Love the V4 engine. Most of my riding is sport related and some touring so I bought the HondaVFR1200F 1237cc V4 engine. Tuned to 100tq and 190hp. Weight is about 560lbs wet.
I own a late 2007 Vmax. One of the last of the first gens. I also own an early 2009(manufactured in 2008)Vmax. First of the last gens. Here is my experience....with the gen 1, I get that instant recognition and for some, that nostalgia. With that is also the respect that bike gave the racing world. The gen 2, the recognition isnt there. Its only when I tell people its a Vmax is when the light bulb clicks. Power differences are night and day between the gen 1 and gen 2. The gen 1 has the Vboost which you "feel" kick in. Like secondaries on an old 4 barrel carb. The gen 2 power is smooth and strong throughout the entire RPM band but no "kick" once youre above 6000 RPM. 500 extra CCs and fuel injection is so much more superior to carburation. However, if you are thinking of getting a Vmax of any generation, its a bike that will not disappoint. And this is not a bike you get if you are concerned with fuel mileage. They are thirsty lil beasts and they drink well. Lastly, anyone considering VMax the years I think with "better" value would be early first year(1985) with stock exhaust. 1994 in yellow. Yes, some people have painted other year maxs yellow, but 1994 was the only year for yellow. 2005. This is their anniversary edition with only 2000 in this year. They have numbered badges indicating sequence. 2007. Last year of the gen 1 run. Every problem with the bike allegedly worked out(factory wise). 2009. First year for the gen 2 run. 2020. Last year of the entire production run. This list is my opinion and in no way shape of form should be taken as gospel. You can find each of these bikes and perhaps get one at a great deal. You may already have one of these bikes and didnt get what you though you were gonna get. The market will bear what the market will bear.
I've looked at a lot of bikes for my next ride and this video solidified that I made the correct choice. Very well done production, so thank you for the hard work in putting it all together. Dr. Marc

Absolutely hands-down the best review of any motorcycle I have ever watched. You did a great job on the video 2 thumbs up. I have been wanting a Vmax since the 1980s and somehow I have yet to buy one. I have owned 27 motorcycles and never really came across the right deal on the VMAX. I think all of that has come to an end this morning. I found a 2020 close by for the right price. It only has 614 miles on it and it looks like I'm going to be able to get it for under 15K. Due to the fact that the Vmax has been discontinued I feel I may need to pull the trigger immediately. Thanks again for the video.
@@flesz_ Unfortunately I did not. The dealership was acting super shady. Ended up in a argument with the sales manager who basically refused to let me pay cash for the bike. It was the first time I've ever experienced a dealership basically refusing to take my money. They were obviously in a deep committed relationship with their financial partners.
Hey I'm a Alabama person also, Phenix City. A friend of mine had an original VMax. He moved up from a 650 maximum. It was a scary Beast lol. The maximum could jump both tires off the ground when you cranked the throttle. But it wasnt near the pounds of the Vmax. Nice Bike stay safe!!
Got divorced, lost the house, no garage. . . yeah it was a sad day to sell mine, it was a 93 in mint shape and I had a ton of fun while I owned it. And I'm still alive to talk about it. If I ever hit the lotto I will get another one. Maybe two ! The new is probably nice to ride but it lacks in the sexy department. The older ones just had that look that I fell in love with.
This is just my personal opinion here. The VMax ( 4 cyl ) the MT 01 ( 2 cyl ) and the Roadstar Warrior ( 2 cyl ) all come out of the one stable, Yamaha. The VMax is the only survivor, but it doesn’t mean it has the road to itself. The MT 01 and Warrior can hold their own with the VMax. Both these bikes are just as dangerous if ridden by an inexperienced rider. The MT & Warrior don’t need to rev as high as the Max ( 5k redline with certain mods 6k ). Where the Max probably has it is in the top speed, but then again at 130+ mph who cares which one has the higher speed. I have had my 2005 RS Warrior off the clock at 235kph and for a 63 yr old at the time was enough for me. If I was say 30 yrs younger I would probably buy a VMax, but I’m happy with what I have. Very, very nice (apart from the non self-cancelling indicators). I've had a 2009 VMax, so this would be round 2 for me. Like you, I'm a shortie but have never felt out of control on my bike. This all black version just looks awesome.
Never rode a V-Max but I've always been a fan. I feel like if someone claims to love motorcycles or is a self proclaimed "bike enthusiasts" and they don't know about the V-Max then they usually don't know much about motorcycles.

A couple 8mm plastic ties at each end of the coil spring anchoring it to the spring cup on any bike or car coil-over will hook one up astronomically. Its actually an old Rally trick where wire or a hd pipe clamp even used. :)

Excellent bike, i had 3 of the 1200 Vmaxs, they all ran great, i hit a deer with one of them, never laid the bike down, still was $1800.00 in damage, stainless steel Super Trap mufflers etc. a little more costly, i almost bought one of these 1700's, i do especially like this all black one, i bought another Kawy Concours 1400 instead, i want to do more traveling, but that does'nt exclude this bike, they are the coolest & nicest looking bikes in my opinion, also run great, good video 👍personally , i think the little back rest makes it look a little better yet 👍

My '94 V-max gets 22.5 MPG driven sensibly. It is 1197cc and on the Clayton dynomometer delivers 122.3 horsepower at the rear tire. Crankshaft horsepower figures are not published but it is extrapolated to be 146HP. The V-boost system is responsible for 26.2 of that horsepower as proven on the dyno. This is an unmodified V-max with 3,941 miles on the spedo with premium fuel. It weighs 604lbs wet. By comparison, a stock Volkswagen Beetle rated at 65 horsepower puts out an actual 21 horsepower at the tires on the dyno, running the cooling fan and generator.
Jeff, good review. Love your all-black version, esp. the exhaust looks better that way than in the titanium-color version. But now it’s getting time for some mods;-) Take a look at the OEM windshield, it really adds something to the look. Also, those hanging ear indicators had to go for mine. Kellermann makes some ultra-light and super small ones. I’ll send you pics if you want.

Great review..! I've loved the V-max for as long as I can remember, not only the power, but the style.......so now I ride a black Honda. :-) A Honda that looks and feels a bit like the V-max, with a V4 engine, a nice rumble from quad upswept exhaust pipes, and a driveshaft. It's the 1988 SuperMagna (VF 750 C).
You may want to look at those signal lights again.....My 98 Gen1 has self canceling signal lights, they're based on moving a certain distance after turning them on
Great video. However as a vmax ownwer I have to say to crank the trottle a littelbit in idle will not open the exup valve so it is actually louder when you ride the bike on high rpm and wide open trottle
My goal wasn’t to see how loud I could make it, but to demonstrate how loud it would be under normal circumstances while sitting in the driveway to show that neighbors shouldn’t be annoyed. Doing as you suggested would surely upset the neighbors. 🤬😡
If this bike had a bigger gas tank and a 6th gear I never would have gotten rid of mine. Very difficult to cruise outside of city limits. The 5 speed transmission is geared for the 1/4 mile and no way to change the gearing for longer highway rides, nobody rides at 60 on the freeway. If you go at 75 the rpms are so high that any touch of the throttle has a big change in speed. Not to mention it seems like the gas mileage goes down into the teens. If all you want to do is boulevard cruise, there is nothing better.
I had the 1200 full power for some years and it was great bar 2 things, tank size and no way of knowing when it was going to run out ....get to 70 miles and start looking for a pit stop
My decat/exhaust, tuned mt10 also gets in the low 20's mpg when I'm doing crazy fast pulls. I'm talking deep into triple digits but that's what big displacement bikes are about. I'm 63😅
I don't mind not having a self cancelling module on my bike. My left thumb fidget all the time when I ride, I used to be so conscious with my signal lights, even when riding a straight 10 kilometer high way, my thumbs keep clicking on the center button on these signal levers. I'm way past the point where I no longer forget to turn off my signals. I managed to bring the same practice when I ride my car. But yeah, I guess you're right, there are still some wackos who keep forgetting to turn them off, so I guess I support this.
The coolest cruiser motorcycle ever made. I always wanted one, but I don’t have a lot of experience riding. They seem to have gone up a lot in price since production has stopped.
Great review ! I own a Second generation Yamaha V 4 venture 1300 cc which is similar to the first generation Vmax engine I wish yamaha had went with the new larger v 4 1670 cc engine on their new venture instead they went with a 1900 cc v twin air cool ☹️
I see you have a Ram mount on your handlebars. I love my Ram mount wireless charger cell phone mount on my bike! As far as the ABS is concerned, all motorcycles have different veins or rings or pick ups. You can tell if your bike has ABS just by looking for the sensor as you stated at the front wheel.
Just bought my 2020 vmax 1/30/21. Its snowing here in Maryland so I'm gonna have to wait for a decent day to ride it. Dealership wouldn't let me test drive it. Which is understandable.
@@JeffMarcum I drove it the other day for like 10 minutes. It's fast as fuk. I love how when you give it the beans the front wheel stays on the ground. I have a 2020 Mt10 and the front tire comes up real easy. I'm not to coordinated and wheelies scare the he'll out of me. Glad the vmax didn't do that. Can't wait for a decent day to ride it again.

* 6th gear. I still think a 6th gear would be useful to improve fuel economy on the highway. A lower engine speed reduces pumping losses and thus fuel economy.
* Fuel tank. A bigger fuel tank would definitely be appreciated.
* Sticker. You can remove that ugly safety sticker from your top cover very simply. Heat it up with a hair dryer for a few minutes. This will loosen the glue and you can peel it right off with no residue remaining. I did this the first day that I owned mine.
* Cruise control. I really wish this bike had cruise control. The sad thing is that it would have cost almost nothing to incorporate it. It already has speed sensors on the wheels and throttle by wire. The only additional items needed would be 2 push buttons on the handlebars and software.
* Oil pressure gauge. I really wish that the bike had an oil pressure idiot light. It only has an oil level idiot light.
* Not a cruiser. This bike is really not a cruiser. It is more accurately described as a naked standard which is the way almost all bikes were before about 1985. A cruiser's main feature is a very low seat with forward controls that I hate. This bike has controls placed just below the rider with the rider leaning slightly forward. All this makes for much better handling and control than cruiser-style controls.
Thanks for watching and adding additional thoughts. That jacking thing is coming from people who haven't ridden one. Now my Nighthawk 650 jacked the rear. But somewhere along the way, at least Yamaha, figured out a way to dispense of it. As far as the cruiser moniker, we may have to agree to disagree on that. When this bike first came out it was to compete with the V65 Magna, which was the first power cruiser. The term naked is a recent term that didn't exist back when we first started riding. Today's naked is the 1980s standard. The VMAX was more of a cruiser than a standard. Either way, we are both fortunate to have one, especially now that it just got the ax last week.

I had a V65 Magna back in the day. Only 115 horses but went through back tires like crazy. A bike like that will keep you buying tires.
Had a 85 vmax it was a beast back in the day. Have heard this model with a full exhaust and it sounded awesome. I kept the bike till 1990 no issues. From there I switched to sport bikes but always loved the vmax.
Really hard to find decent bike reviews. A little guys don't do their research when reviewing a bike. Just a lot of nonsense. You actually give detailed specs and good information on the bike. I've thought about reviewing several of my bikes and how I go out detailing and explaining overview of motorcycle is nearly identical to what you are saying. Well done 👏 man.

The VMax is rock solid and always was a bit old fashioned. Leave the LED toys and the TFT-multipurpose screen for the Generation Ipad generation, a VMax will be a special bike even after another 35 years. By then, the new bikers generation laughs about your "modern" style but the VMax, as dated as it may look to you today, will still be hailed. Maybe even more than today.
It is one of a kind. Not wearing stylish fake jewels as signal indicators.
I still own and ride my 1200 VMax. Could sell it for higher price then the ones that were "modified" for more modern looks back then.
Guess why.
The 2nd gen vmax is powerful, if you're buying a used one with low mileage - make sure it doesn't have too much piss on the seat...

I have yet to meet a VMAX owner who hates or doesn't like their bike. Many of them were hard core "other brand" owners, and drove one of these once, and then after that one ride, would fester over the whole deal, and one day, wake up, and say screw it, I am getting one... Which is strange to witness, as one acquaintance I have, when you walk into his garage, there isn't a single bit of wall space that isn't consumed with that "other brand" of pictures, posters, fandom, galore, and to then see a VMAX sitting in the middle of all that.. LOL. backed up by a smile on their face. It doesn't even matter what age group it is, as I have seen all walks of life rolling these units and it doesn't mean that they now hate the other brands, by all means no, they still fancy the other brands, but, there is just something about this VMAX series, that is fitting for so many flavors. It looks mean, it looks classy, it is an exceptional cruiser, at the same time, can be a rocket ship. There is one guy, who purchased one of these wrecked, from a salvage yard, and turned it into a stunt bike, beings that is what he likes to do, by modifying a few things one typically does to make it safer to play on, not only for the rider, but the safety for the bike, in the event of laying it on its side, as that is something that happens all the time with these stunt riders (not my cup of tea, but to each their own). I met another guy, who drag races one of these, and completely chopped the day lights out of it, with all sorts of modified stuff. No, it is not the fastest thing on the drag strip, but, his comment was, "Nah, it isn't as fast as most of my other drag bikes, but, on this one, I feel more safe, due to how solid it feels on the strip." Don't get me wrong, this bike is stupid fast, you wouldn't catch me doing what he does, thinking I could do that, no way!!! The part I am rolling on the floor about, is the bank still owns this bank, no warranty anymore, and still should have had like a 2 to 3 years or something like that, and the first chance he got, started to modify it, hacking the ECM, upgraded fuel system, etc...Who does that kinda stuff? LOL... when the unit really doesn't need any mod's.. but that is a tinkerer for you...

The prior owner added: Yamaha OEM saddlebags (rare), Rizoma Sport CNC black Aluminum Hand grips. Black ASV brake and clutch levers, Folding Blacked out mirrors, Black Soto Rear Sets, Low Profile Passenger Backrest (same as yours), Passenger Footrest Relocation Kit, Black luggage rack, Blacked out turn signal lenses, Black Handlebar, Black Side Covers, Black front fender supports and he included a motorcycle cover and a battery tender. Looks to be $5K in mods and upgrades... I'll be adding bar end mirrors and maybe a black wrap to the intake scoops.
Been riding Harleys since 1980, still ride a black Terminator Fatboy. Picked up a 1997 Gen 1 VMAX a few years ago and turned it into a Mad Max naked bike. That is the hotrod for scaring the neighbors. Looks like I'll be keeping all three...

This has been my dream bike for about 3 years now. i bought a honda magna 750 V4 and fell in love with v4 bikes. cant wait to own one of these my self.
I rode a 1994 Magna VF750C (house mate's motorcycle) during a 6-month assignment in Huntsville, AL this past year. I have owned a 1994 gen-1 V-max as well as a 2007 gen-1 V-Max in NY. The Magna was smooth and an OK fit, but I missed the occasional V-Boost rush. Now, I am back at home in NY (COVID-19 pandemic has us working remotely) and missing the warm Alabama weather for an opportune ride.
The gen-2 is too tall for me. The gen-1 V-Max and Magna were good fitting with my short 29" in seam trousers.
Dream bike right there.

I agree with the five speed philosophy. It’s just really wide gearing from forth to fifth. So it effectively gives you the best of both worlds, acceleration and cruising ease.
I had an old Harley with a spaced out for the gear and it very effective, for different reasons.
Today a lot of people say any performance bike should be engineered like a crotch rocket and I just don’t agree with that thinking.

I have a Shaft Driven 2012 BMW K1600 Gt and never had a shaft drive jack sensation , and that BMW is unbelievably quick. My 2020 Ducati Panegali V4s with full Ak titanium exhaust with Race tune gives you the sensation of launch 🚀 you wouldn’t believe, liken it to a Cat shot that won’t stop until you back it off. I think the vmax is probably one of the best muscle cruisers you can buy. Love the V4 engine. Most of my riding is sport related and some touring so I bought the HondaVFR1200F 1237cc V4 engine. Tuned to 100tq and 190hp. Weight is about 560lbs wet.
Those of us with V4 experience appreciate the unique characteristics of that configuration. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I own a late 2007 Vmax. One of the last of the first gens. I also own an early 2009(manufactured in 2008)Vmax. First of the last gens. Here is my experience....with the gen 1, I get that instant recognition and for some, that nostalgia. With that is also the respect that bike gave the racing world. The gen 2, the recognition isnt there. Its only when I tell people its a Vmax is when the light bulb clicks. Power differences are night and day between the gen 1 and gen 2. The gen 1 has the Vboost which you "feel" kick in. Like secondaries on an old 4 barrel carb. The gen 2 power is smooth and strong throughout the entire RPM band but no "kick" once youre above 6000 RPM. 500 extra CCs and fuel injection is so much more superior to carburation. However, if you are thinking of getting a Vmax of any generation, its a bike that will not disappoint. And this is not a bike you get if you are concerned with fuel mileage. They are thirsty lil beasts and they drink well.
Lastly, anyone considering VMax the years I think with "better" value would be early first year(1985) with stock exhaust. 1994 in yellow. Yes, some people have painted other year maxs yellow, but 1994 was the only year for yellow. 2005. This is their anniversary edition with only 2000 in this year. They have numbered badges indicating sequence. 2007. Last year of the gen 1 run. Every problem with the bike allegedly worked out(factory wise). 2009. First year for the gen 2 run. 2020. Last year of the entire production run. This list is my opinion and in no way shape of form should be taken as gospel. You can find each of these bikes and perhaps get one at a great deal. You may already have one of these bikes and didnt get what you though you were gonna get. The market will bear what the market will bear.

Absolutely hands-down the best review of any motorcycle I have ever watched. You did a great job on the video 2 thumbs up. I have been wanting a Vmax since the 1980s and somehow I have yet to buy one. I have owned 27 motorcycles and never really came across the right deal on the VMAX. I think all of that has come to an end this morning. I found a 2020 close by for the right price. It only has 614 miles on it and it looks like I'm going to be able to get it for under 15K. Due to the fact that the Vmax has been discontinued I feel I may need to pull the trigger immediately. Thanks again for the video.

@@flesz_ Unfortunately I did not. The dealership was acting super shady. Ended up in a argument with the sales manager who basically refused to let me pay cash for the bike. It was the first time I've ever experienced a dealership basically refusing to take my money. They were obviously in a deep committed relationship with their financial partners.

He moved up from a 650 maximum. It was a scary Beast lol. The maximum could jump both tires off the ground when you cranked the throttle. But it wasnt near the pounds of the Vmax.

Got divorced, lost the house, no garage. . . yeah it was a sad day to sell mine, it was a 93 in mint shape and I had a ton of fun while I owned it. And I'm still alive to talk about it. If I ever hit the lotto I will get another one. Maybe two ! The new is probably nice to ride but it lacks in the sexy department. The older ones just had that look that I fell in love with.

This is just my personal opinion here. The VMax ( 4 cyl ) the MT 01 ( 2 cyl ) and the Roadstar Warrior ( 2 cyl ) all come out of the one stable, Yamaha. The VMax is the only survivor, but it doesn’t mean it has the road to itself. The MT 01 and Warrior can hold their own with the VMax. Both these bikes are just as dangerous if ridden by an inexperienced rider. The MT & Warrior don’t need to rev as high as the Max ( 5k redline with certain mods 6k ). Where the Max probably has it is in the top speed, but then again at 130+ mph who cares which one has the higher speed. I have had my 2005 RS Warrior off the clock at 235kph and for a 63 yr old at the time was enough for me. If I was say 30 yrs younger I would probably buy a VMax, but I’m happy with what I have. Very, very nice (apart from the non self-cancelling indicators). I've had a 2009 VMax, so this would be round 2 for me. Like you, I'm a shortie but have never felt out of control on my bike. This all black version just looks awesome.

Never rode a V-Max but I've always been a fan. I feel like if someone claims to love motorcycles or is a self proclaimed "bike enthusiasts" and they don't know about the V-Max then they usually don't know much about motorcycles.

People ignore the fact that "rear jacking" means the rear tire is pushing down hard. That equates to more grip. Not a bad thing at all.

Riding a stryker at the moment
A couple 8mm plastic ties at each end of the coil spring anchoring it to the spring cup on any bike or car coil-over will hook one up astronomically. Its actually an old Rally trick where wire or a hd pipe clamp even used. :)

Excellent bike, i had 3 of the 1200 Vmaxs, they all ran great, i hit a deer with one of them, never laid the bike down, still was $1800.00 in damage, stainless steel Super Trap mufflers etc. a little more costly, i almost bought one of these 1700's, i do especially like this all black one, i bought another Kawy Concours 1400 instead, i want to do more traveling, but that does'nt exclude this bike, they are the coolest & nicest looking bikes in my opinion, also run great, good video 👍personally , i think the little back rest makes it look a little better yet 👍

Ive wanted a vmax since the very first time i seen one in the early 90's.
My '94 V-max gets 22.5 MPG driven sensibly. It is 1197cc and on the Clayton dynomometer delivers 122.3 horsepower at the rear tire. Crankshaft horsepower figures are not published but it is extrapolated to be 146HP. The V-boost system is responsible for 26.2 of that horsepower as proven on the dyno. This is an unmodified V-max with 3,941 miles on the spedo with premium fuel. It weighs 604lbs wet. By comparison, a stock Volkswagen Beetle rated at 65 horsepower puts out an actual 21 horsepower at the tires on the dyno, running the cooling fan and generator.
Jeff, good review. Love your all-black version, esp. the exhaust looks better that way than in the titanium-color version. But now it’s getting time for some mods;-) Take a look at the OEM windshield, it really adds something to the look. Also, those hanging ear indicators had to go for mine. Kellermann makes some ultra-light and super small ones. I’ll send you pics if you want.
Other than adding a small boulevard windshield and some engine guards, pucks,,leave it alone!

A Honda that looks and feels a bit like the V-max, with a V4 engine, a nice rumble from quad upswept exhaust pipes, and a driveshaft.

You may want to look at those signal lights again.....My 98 Gen1 has self canceling signal lights, they're based on moving a certain distance after turning them on
Great video. However as a vmax ownwer I have to say to crank the trottle a littelbit in idle will not open the exup valve so it is actually louder when you ride the bike on high rpm and wide open trottle
My goal wasn’t to see how loud I could make it, but to demonstrate how loud it would be under normal circumstances while sitting in the driveway to show that neighbors shouldn’t be annoyed. Doing as you suggested would surely upset the neighbors. 🤬😡
If this bike had a bigger gas tank and a 6th gear I never would have gotten rid of mine. Very difficult to cruise outside of city limits. The 5 speed transmission is geared for the 1/4 mile and no way to change the gearing for longer highway rides, nobody rides at 60 on the freeway. If you go at 75 the rpms are so high that any touch of the throttle has a big change in speed. Not to mention it seems like the gas mileage goes down into the teens. If all you want to do is boulevard cruise, there is nothing better.

My decat/exhaust, tuned mt10 also gets in the low 20's mpg when I'm doing crazy fast pulls. I'm talking deep into triple digits but that's what big displacement bikes are about. I'm 63😅
I have a yamaha Raider and love it for a cruiser but I'm always considering a Imax for a second bike
I don't mind not having a self cancelling module on my bike. My left thumb fidget all the time when I ride, I used to be so conscious with my signal lights, even when riding a straight 10 kilometer high way, my thumbs keep clicking on the center button on these signal levers. I'm way past the point where I no longer forget to turn off my signals. I managed to bring the same practice when I ride my car. But yeah, I guess you're right, there are still some wackos who keep forgetting to turn them off, so I guess I support this.
The coolest cruiser motorcycle ever made. I always wanted one, but I don’t have a lot of experience riding. They seem to have gone up a lot in price since production has stopped.

I see you have a Ram mount on your handlebars. I love my Ram mount wireless charger cell phone mount on my bike! As far as the ABS is concerned, all motorcycles have different veins or rings or pick ups. You can tell if your bike has ABS just by looking for the sensor as you stated at the front wheel.

Just bought my 2020 vmax 1/30/21. Its snowing here in Maryland so I'm gonna have to wait for a decent day to ride it. Dealership wouldn't let me test drive it. Which is understandable.
