Today, I hit 57k miles. 13 Sets of tires later, I will tell you, it has been miles of smiles. I have had so much fun with this thing. You can cruise for hours. I will be removing the restrictions from the ECU VERY soon and then Ill be done. I also have a 2019 Fat Boy 114 that I use when I go long distance or take my wife out. When I want to have fun I take the VMax.
Thanks Spite. Finally, an in-depth really good normal review on the VMax. Nothing but facts told on this whole review. Especially the fuel thirst and the fun teasing that comes along from your friends. Like, you just topped off, leave the gas station, come up on another gas station after 10 miles of riding and your friends wisecrack and jokingly asking if we all need to pull in again! 😂 Funtimes!! I got my 2014 new and it is still 100% an absolute joy to ride. Such a great bike. Zero issues. It's a super comfortable cruiser, the braking is fierce, and bottom line, it's fast AF!! I could own 10-20 different MC's and my 14' Vmax is still a motorcycle I never see myself getting rid of. Oh yeah, my beard got longer watching this vid.
The Vmax is the evil twin to my bike. I have a Royal Star Tour Deluxe. My bike gets 42mpg. Unfortunately I've never ridden a Vmax but I want to. I love the sound of the V4.
Love the VMAX one of the most iconic muscle cruiser out there but i went and bought another for the comfort of riding and still have the muscle cruiser vibe the Triumph Rocket 3 GT , 2,7 sec on a 0-60 so not far from the VMAX 2,5 sec those motorcycles are iconic in my mind they will have to upgrade that old VMAX look its past due. Ride safe man. and hello from Montréal Québec Canada.
MOAR V-MAX PLOX!! Total dream bike. I don't need one but I soooo want to ride one. For my actual stable I would probably buy a Busa or a blackbird before this... but the V-Max gives me the tingles for sure. I would watch additional V-Max related shenanigans.
MT-01 best American Yamaha because it's an awesome bike with a big V-twin, V-Max most American Yamaha because there's just more of everything. It even has more more, and bigger bigs too😂😂.
Well if a TH-camr is from the United States they're probably going to use the measurement system that they were born and raised with. It's not that they think the United States is all that exists in the world. Whatever measurement that you've been using your whole life is naturally the system that you're going to use whether you're making videos or not.
I'm a Harley rider, and yeah, the VMax will leave anything, and I mean anything Milwaukee builds in the weeds. It's a beautiful machine and has a ton of power. Great bike, great power cruiser!
I’ve never been into cruisers, R1 only for me. Then I rode one of these. I now own the original 2009 vance and Hines cs-1 transformer themed vmax1700!!! Vance and Hines bought the bike back in 09 to develop the cs-1 exhaust system that you have on this bike in the video. There’s plenty of pics of mine on the internet.
My first bike is a Vstar 1100, I only put 200 miles on it to learn how to ride a motorcycle, then jumped on the Vmax and started riding daily. I'm stupid crazy don't learn from me, but Vmax has been my dream bike since teenager.
🤷🏾♂️ Never understood it. Always going to throw my hand down to all riders. Most of the Harley guys ignore me. Lol Still throwing it down. Zx-14 rider 🤟🏾
Vmax sits in a special niche. It is not a sport bike. It is not really a "Cruiser". The only bikes that fit in with it are the likes of the Rocket 3 and Duval. They are not Nakeds, Standards, or Tourer, they are muscle bikes. The thrill of the acceleration. The smoking of the rear, and just lone wolf persona of it makes it stand tall.
I'm pretty sure that the V-Max air intakes are deliberately positioned to allow for the expansion of the "Gentleman's Vegetables" should you decide to "see what she can do". Those mirrors have to go though. I swear that they look almost identical to the ones that came with my '93 Suzuki 250 Bandit & make the bike look much older than it is.
That was true for the 1200 VMax....sort of. Even the 1200 VMaxs engine was heavily updated from the royal venture (a nice tourer btw). The 1700 Vmax like the one tested here is a total different bike.
Almost bought a b-king till I sat on it and my knees hit the intake just like yours on that vmax 😭 love love the look of the vmax just not made for a 6’3 rider
I had an ‘89 V-max (Red), I like that design better than this overly muscular bulge, but that new radiator is an improvement and the low headlight inline with the tank… 👍😊 The speed is addictive, indeed. 🤣
Back to my old fart days. I had a new '82 GS1100 EZ. It was between the GPZ and GS for the crown. Then the V-Max came out. A guy bought one, but he was so afraid of it, that he would never race, or even open it up.
@@stanleydragon9548 I purchased my 1100 before the Katana and the 1150 came out. I started out on an 1100, mostly because it was actually cheaper than other brands' 750s.
workin in a Yamaha dealer during first release i remember unboxing the first Max to hit town and we all were amazed how they fit what was OBVIOUSLY a car tire on the rear..... fast foward a few decades and we have bikes now with wider front tires than that old Max....😂😂 largest complaint was the lifespan of that rear tire lmao.... iin all the years wrenching i rarely had anyone ask to "hop it up" complaining about lack of power was never an issue.... suspension, brakes and ergonomics.... yup all those needed attention not the engine
I've got a 2017 I bought new, absolutely love the bike....more than any other bike I've ever owned. I've done all the mods to mine, DD clutch, Nash Flash, opened the airbox and removed the back lid, 4 into 2 exhaust, etc.. I cannot ride the bike reasonably...can't do it as much as I've tried! Yeah, the tank mileage sucks but it is what it is, the way I usually ride I generally see the light come on at about 75+/- miles... 😎
So, first thing to keep in mind when disassembling a vintage bike: do not cut/break/destroy parts unless you know that a replacement is available otherwise you may wait months for a hard to find replacement throttle cable... gotcha
You have to ride a first gen it had four carbs and this wild butterfly system that would open around 6,ooo rpms it would literally feel like a 50 shot of nitrous but stayed ahead of everything
Why would a Harley rider cry? These bikes are not even in the same class. I have met more down to earth Harley riders than sport bike riders. Most sportys are spoiled rich kids trying to puff their chest with daddy's money. I have had every type of bike made, my go to HD. When i was a boy, i said i would never own an old man Harley. Lol
I've always wanted a V-Max but never ran across a deal at the right time. I've only ever been on one, one time, in 1987. I don't take m 09' Tuono out much, but every time I do I laugh like you were in this video. If I bought a Max now it would have to replace my Griso, and I don't need another fast bike bad enough to give up the Guzzi.
The VMAX1700 is the ultimate collector of speed. (and gas station receipts) It's nearly impossible to not smile when riding. You have to use equal amounts of power and nerve to make it go were you want it to go. A literal beast! P.S. The throttle lock is pretty much useless on the Max. Any throttle input, at all, simply adds speed. It is nearly impossible to find the minuscule throttle position that will maintain your speed without accelerating. Yes, it's that eager to go faster.
If you know about the intake and fuel delivery system on this motor then you can understand the low to midrange power of the VMax. The physical appearance was a revolution and the engine is a mechanical monster. At the right rpm all four carburetors start feeding the whole motor. Its complicated buts it's quite effective and efficient.
I highly doubt that you have ever riden yourself a modern shaft driven bike. If you ride "normal"… in terms of not provoking the shaft drive, this bike like all modern shaft driven bikes don't show any lifting. Actually not even the first Gen did this even it had a much more questionable behaviour.
186hp and 121tq out of the one that was on the Dyno before me....ONLY things done were 91 pump fuel, header back exhaust, flash, and filter box mod. Thing made 90hp extra in some areas due to oem rstrictions!! Shit was WILD to see and made me want one instantly. My R1 is cool and sounds even better but a v4 cruiser, with near 190whp is awesome too
Great bikes, I had one here in the US years ago, sold it. I also had one when I lived in the UK for a couple years 25 years ago. You might not know that V-boost is illegal there, so unless you buy a "gray market" bike, you can't have one with V-boost there. Currently I have 2 Harleys, a classic Triumph, 2 Hondas, and a Yamaha. Why do so many need to comment on Harley and Harley riders when talking about other bikes? My main ride is a Harley with only about 120 HP and about 140 lb-ft of torque, if I had to keep only one, that would be it. Wait, that's more torque than the V-Max? Yup. By the way, from experience I can say that a new tire will not solve that handling quirk. For me the V-Max is fun like choppers are fun. I have built and ridden numerous choppers over the years. There are some people that live with such a bike and put a lot of miles on it but most don't. I used to be a daily chopper rider, but there is no way my back can handle a hardtail for so many hours anymore. If you do 20,000 miles a year, and you ride for decades, you tend to make different choices about what you ride. My first street bike was a Harley that I put together in my garage when I was 19 years old. 40 years later I watch TH-camrs talk about Harley riders crying. I don't get that actually, and I never have. One of the commenters said he likes making fun of Harley riders on the road, or something like that. How does someone live like that? I mean that figuratively, and perhaps literally. Typically that kind of behavior catches up with you, and I don't mean o imply anything about the Harley riders. Just in general, people that act like that tend to get hurt for it eventually. Anyway, fun video. Really funny to see you twist the throttle and giggle like a kid. I still do that on my Harley with 140 torque...and nobody cries about it.
My brother in law had what he thought was a fast motorcycle. A Harley. In 87 we had a demo V-Max, and I asked him to race me on it. All he said afterwards was let me ride it. I said ok, and let him ride it. He couldn't believe how fast it was.
Great post Spike. A few of these are in Guyana, 1st and 2nd gen models. Fast as fuck and they gets..."nuff respect"! Almost untouchable up to 140mph too even with my FireBlade. Keep up your great work bro.
The Giggle like a school girl😂. I like the VMAX. I wish Yamaha had the guts to leave this engine in their Venture touring bike and not detune it so much. The old V4 ventures my gpa had were my favorite. A 200hp venture would be an awesome machine. Have a nice day
I took mine to a King of the Dyno day at my local Harley shop and took home the crown. I destroyed the Harley whatever glide in 2nd place by over 51 horsepower lol. It had a nasty sounding 120R that can definitely get down and boogie but it's no match for the mighty VMAX.
I was in love with the V-Max for a while when they first came out. That was until I discovered the Boulevard C-109R a few years ago. It's "only" 120hp, but at 118ft/lb, it's up there with the V-Max in torque. I bought a 2010 109 about 6 weeks ago, and I love it so far. It has a few quirks like the linked braking system, and an extremely sensitive TBW system, but I'm adjusting to them. There's plenty of videos on the M-109R, but barely anything on the C-109R, and I'd be interested in hearing your views on it if you can get your hands on one.

This is what I have done to the bike: Corbin seat, LEDs around the bike, Denali Sounbomb horn, Hardwired Valentine 1 with HARD unit, Ventrue F1 Dash Cam and 2 RAM mounts for iPhone with SlipGrip and Magnet plate for the radar detector.
The bike needs to be wide to accommodate the balls needed to ride it
The Vmax is the evil twin to my bike.
Great review of mighty max. I had a 09 and now an 18. Yes, absolutely would buy a gen 3 VMAX!
Definitely want to see a new one, just brings back memories of OGRI in the old motorcycle mags
They are coming back with a turbo 1700
I have a 2018. Absolutely love it. Has a little over 57k miles as of yesterday. 13 sets of tires, miles of smiles.
MOAR V-MAX PLOX!! Total dream bike. I don't need one but I soooo want to ride one. For my actual stable I would probably buy a Busa or a blackbird before this... but the V-Max gives me the tingles for sure. I would watch additional V-Max related shenanigans.
Smiles per Gallon! 🔥🚀Wonder if anyone has done 17” wheel swap
Yes, it has been done.
This or the MT-01 for the "Most American Yamaha" ever created?
That's a tough question. I think the answer is yes.
This
MT-01 best American Yamaha because it's an awesome bike with a big V-twin, V-Max most American Yamaha because there's just more of everything. It even has more more, and bigger bigs too😂😂.
What about the FJR
@@petejr7774 Good bike, very European though.
One of these passed me on the interstate in Utah that had a full fairing, saddle bags and a tour pack. Greated tourer ever!
Haven't even watched the video yet and gave it a preemptive thumbs up because...... vmax.
Update: totally worth the thumbs up.
I give every one of Spites videos a thumbs up before I watch them just to help the AL Gore rhythm
Because.....vFuckingMax
Great to see another channel realise that USA isn't the world and also giving normal units for the rest 95%. Thank you, much appreciated!
I bought a 2020 Kawasaki Concurs and rode it for three years it was amazing! I really need to consider this bike.
I always wanted one of those when I was a kid.
Thankfully I could never afford one so I am still alive.
I would say bring it back but they NEED to beef up the fuel capacity.
I installed a 21.5 litre tank; turns it into a normal range motorcycle. Best add-on for a VMAX.
I've just seen one on the road today, not my kind of bike, but looks magnificient.
Best bike ever with best engine configuration, V4 is pure adrenaline. I have a 2014 from new and every day she makes me feel like first ride love it.
The brown engine accents are SICK!!!!!!!
Also, best video intro to date. 🤙🏻
I have a 2013 model. Double clutch and airbox mod. 2 gallon larger gas tank a full akra exhaust and guru flash. Totally different animal.
I bought a 2015 vmax as my almost first bike. It is fantastic. I ride it daily commuting.
My first bike is a Vstar 1100, I only put 200 miles on it to learn how to ride a motorcycle, then jumped on the Vmax and started riding daily. I'm stupid crazy don't learn from me, but Vmax has been my dream bike since teenager.
Why does everyone hate on Harleys? I ride motorcycles, I love all motorcycles and respect all riders .
🤷🏾♂️ Never understood it. Always going to throw my hand down to all riders. Most of the Harley guys ignore me. Lol Still throwing it down. Zx-14 rider 🤟🏾
I would imagine that the bias against HD comes from the large amount of riders on them, who have a “superiority complex”
My dad used to be really into the Vmax, he's had 2 of them. Eventually swapped it for a harley because he was just getting too many speeding tickets!
YES Yes and Yes! I have the Gen 1 and Gen 2! I would defiantly make room for a Gen 3!!!!!
They're almost the exact same as the ones off my 98 Vmax
Word they look just like the ones on my 99 Vmax
I own two harleys and a gen one Vmax love them all!
Ran out of gas, had to stop filming. 😂 Awesome bike!
I rode the V65 Sabre years ago. 25mpg. Sold the first one, bought a second. Crazy acceleration.
Wow only 25mpg?
This chassis is from the venture royal, one of the nicest riding touring bike. Parking lot speeds easily with no feet and big fairing and bags.
My uncle let me ride his at 17 when I was visiting the US. I sometimes forget I was lucky enough to get to ride this thing at all
Super fun video. I had a VMax 20 years ago. Thank you for sharing.
This is one of the bucket list bikes. Amazing mic quality!
I had an ‘89 V-max (Red), I like that design better than this overly muscular bulge, but that new radiator is an improvement and the low headlight inline with the tank… 👍😊 The speed is addictive, indeed. 🤣
first nice yamaha ive ever seen
Yes Sir for tall riders it’s all about the tank cutouts for the knees!…….even the ‘tiny’ looking Yamaha MT09 has huge tank cutouts and feels great.
Back to my old fart days. I had a new '82 GS1100 EZ. It was between the GPZ and GS for the crown. Then the V-Max came out. A guy bought one, but he was so afraid of it, that he would never race, or even open it up.
I remember those days. Had a 1980 GS 750 in high school.
The 80's liter bikes were a breed apart. I had an '84 GS1100EF and a '88 GSX1100F Katana. Too much fun.
@@stanleydragon9548 I purchased my 1100 before the Katana and the 1150 came out. I started out on an 1100, mostly because it was actually cheaper than other brands' 750s.
workin in a Yamaha dealer during first release i remember unboxing the first Max to hit town and we all were amazed how they fit what was OBVIOUSLY a car tire on the rear..... fast foward a few decades and we have bikes now with wider front tires than that old Max....😂😂
largest complaint was the lifespan of that rear tire lmao....
iin all the years wrenching i rarely had anyone ask to "hop it up" complaining about lack of power was never an issue.... suspension, brakes and ergonomics.... yup all those needed attention not the engine
Even gen1 Vmax makes Harley riders cry 😊
I've got a 2017 I bought new, absolutely love the bike....more than any other bike I've ever owned. I've done all the mods to mine, DD clutch, Nash Flash, opened the airbox and removed the back lid, 4 into 2 exhaust, etc.. I cannot ride the bike reasonably...can't do it as much as I've tried! Yeah, the tank mileage sucks but it is what it is, the way I usually ride I generally see the light come on at about 75+/- miles... 😎
Remember if Harley Davidson made Airplanes would anybody want to Fly. 😅
The worst mass produced motorcycle on the market.
Oh @ kerry…..so bitter
It is a beauty of a bike…….but you might not understand that Harley guys like me just like Harleys…..nothing compares.
I own one. Carbs are rebuilt, just need to reinstall them and clean the gas tank.
Seriously you'll love that thing i wish i never would have gotten rid of it. P.S. Don't guick start it cdi box burned out and had to replace it
And buy some foot pegs for the front crash guards it's really comfortable when you can stretch your legs
I have a 2009 GL 1800 Gold wing and it still rides pretty good, I need to get me a VMAX!
Lol
HEY SPITE. it's about time! Only been suggesting this for years! Hear is the best part the factory felt itwas to much
It originally tested at 230+ so a simple flash and 30+hoarse
Owned two of the 1st gens and took them to the V---MAX! But never seen anyone ride the 2nd gen as fast as it could go.
I had a V-Max back when they were newish and nothing in Savanah Ga. could touch it at the time.
Love that bike. It’s a legend. Still looks futuristic. Also looks kind of apocalyptic too when it’s all dirty.
Great for a straight line.. I remember when they came out, all of a sudden Japan had a bike that was faster than a Harley.. what a claim to fame 👍
The jacket and bike combination makes you look away cooler than you are.
As we all hope a motorcycle would do. Well played sir Spite.
One of my dream bikes 🥹
The intro with the music is the GOAT my dude
I've always wanted a V-Max but never ran across a deal at the right time. I've only ever been on one, one time, in 1987. I don't take m 09' Tuono out much, but every time I do I laugh like you were in this video. If I bought a Max now it would have to replace my Griso, and I don't need another fast bike bad enough to give up the Guzzi.
The whole thing is a nightmare I wished would just go away
The ZX14r was pulled from Euro emission markets, but is still for sale in the Americas.
The V-max could still have been sold over here.
I remember when these came out . Sick Ass bike even with no mods. I heard 11 second quarter mile and can get up n go
The VMAX1700 is the ultimate collector of speed.
Your best editing yet.😮
The only thing this bike needs less is weight. Gorgeous, powerful and has decent reliability.
The one weirdest thing is that shaft drive. In a corner if you're kina between acceleration and deceleration it feels kinda spooky.
HDRA is the Special Olympics for motorcycles.
Have a nice day
The best thing about having a Vmax is that not everyone has one and they are not that common.
It doesnt make me cry, it makes me giggle like a little kid when my mate who has one passes me and my slow ass american hog 😅😁
I took mine to a King of the Dyno day at my local Harley shop and took home the crown. I destroyed the Harley whatever glide in 2nd place by over 51 horsepower lol. It had a nasty sounding 120R that can definitely get down and boogie but it's no match for the mighty VMAX.
The first generation V Max already made them cry and still does and always will. Lot`s of Harleys for sale though......V Max prices go up.
The Yamaha VMax Makes HARLEY RIDERS CRY LAUGHING.
3:16 this person's a menace for parking their car there. Everyone thinking they're about to get a ticket when they see that 🤣
I was in love with the V-Max for a while when they first came out.
