  • SANTORINI, GREECE WHAT YOU REALLY SHOULD KNOW WHEN VISITING BY WAY OF A CRUISE SHIP.
You will arrive at the old port Skala Pier area where the ship comes into. The Old Port is a tender port or also known as a water shuttle port. The ship doesn’t dock in the port area. The ship will actually anchor or use its engines to maintain its location outside the harbor area.
The ship will water shuttle you to the port. If you are not doing an excursion through the cruise ship. You will want to get your shuttle tickets as early as possible to beat the crowds to the port stairs or the cable car. People with a shore excursion get first priority on the water shuttle.
Getting access to Oia and other Greek towns. You will need to go up the mountain or book a water shuttle.
Once you get into port you have a few options:
“It’s Free” Stay in the lower port area “Old Port”. If you stay in this location. You have no access to Oia or other towns. You will have access to some shops and restaurants in the OLD PORT.
“It’s Free” Walk up the donkey stairway to the top of the mountain.
“IT COST $” Hire a water taxi or water shuttle from the Old Port area to Oia. You can pre purchase online or at the port. The ship offers this option as an excursion as well. Here is the water shuttle website transfer-to-oia.gr/
“IT COST $” Purchase a cable car ticket. The cost is well worth the experience of the cable car and the views are freaking amazing.
    SANTORINI CABLE CAR PRICE-LIST
    Adult one way ticket 6,00€
    Children ticket 3,00€
    Luggage 3,00€
    VAT included
“IT COST $” Purchase a donkey ride to carry you up the stairs. One way ticket 8,00 to 10.00€
Once on top of the cliff/mountain you have a couple of options to get you to Oia A MUST SEE TOWN blue roof tops and amazing views.
“IT’S Free” Walk the seaside trail to Oia. It's roughly 6.5 miles, an estimated 3.5 to 4 hours hike one way depending on your skill level.
Rent a car or hire a taxi. The taxi’s can be expensive 50 - 150€. Be Careful some of the local taxi companies/ drivers take advantage of tourists. We used “Santorini’s Finest Tours” for $15 Euro per person. They drove us to Santorini and picked us up based on an agreed time. They were an awesome company, we would highly recommend! Here is their facebook page: / santorinisfinesttravel
Make sure you set an alarm giving you ample time to get back to the ship. The taxi ride can run between 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.

Beautiful Pictures and video. We will be heading there in just a few weeks. Was wondering how long it took you to walk down the donkey stairs.

It took us about 35-40 minutes with no stopping. You really need to be careful going down. It can get slippery. We would not recommend wearing flip flops or sandals. Lots of donkey manure and pee to navigate. Definitely glad we did it and would do it again if the line to the cable car was too long and it’s FREE. You are going to have a blast!! It’s truly an amazing part of the world. Thank you for your questions, comments and coming along on our journey around the world.

How long did you have in Santorini? It was still hot in September? Your husband sounds just like Manascalco!

We arrived in Santorini at 7am in the morning but it was a tender (water shuttle) so getting off the ship is a long process. Because we didn't have a ship excursion that meant we needed to get in line for tickets. Our day started about 5am and we got in line by 6am so we could be in one of the first shuttles out. The last water back to the ship I believe was leaving around 5pm.

September towards the end of the season. Still lots of crowds but nothing like the peak of the season. The peak of the season is crazy with 10 times more people, lines and waiting.Thank you for your question and coming along on our journey around the world.

Thank for this very informative video vlog!! I wanted to ask a question. The taxi service that you used to transport you to Oia did they give you a return time or do you contact them to return to Fira Santorini. I was going to take a water taxi to Oia but think I would like to taxi instead. How long did you have to explore both Oia and Santorini Fira before heading back to the ship. I just subscribed to the channel so I hope to get more info for Greece. Any info is greatly appreciated. I am doing the Greek Isles cruise in September

Hi Debbie, thanks for watching and for the questions. I'll try and answer them all but if you want further info just let us know.
      1. The taxi service we took asked US what time we wanted to be picked up for our return. On the way over we were the only ones in the taxi, but the return was very full (mostly cruise passengers).
      2. We wanted to take the water taxi over but the earlier time was already reserved and the next one was too late. It brings you to the very tip of Oia. You can see it in one of our photos.
      3. We maximized our time in Oia. We were on of the first of the water taxis off the ship and we took the taxi back that would give us about 1hr 45min to get down to the waterfront. We thought that would give us time to stand in line for the cable car, but the line was HUGE and we couldn't even find the end of the line so that's when we decided to walk down the donkey steps. It really wasn't too bad. But the stairs can be slippery so be sure to have good traction shoes if you want to do this.
It is a BEAUTIFUL port, but it can be very hot. Be sure to have sunscreen, water and maybe a hat. Enjoy!

Thank you so much for the information. I am trying to plan out my day. Since we do not have an excursion planned I am not sure how to get on the tender boats early. Do you have any info on that process? Again I love watching your videos so informative. Have a great day!!!😊

Really enjoy your videos 👍 but them poor donkeys , this really is not acceptable to be riding them up and down them steps , this would really put me off going to that area of Santorini
