As an adult, console wars are stupid and unwarranted. As a kid the console wars mattered, most of us weren't fortunate enough to have all the consoles. So, we end up sucked into the console wars to justify our choices or persuade friends.
I practically bullied a buddy of mine for years to get an xbox and he did after the years of telling him i converted him from a PlayStation guy to an xbox guy.

The "console wars" only exist because toxic people like to play video games, too. It's unfortunate, but... there it is. Video games pull in people from all walks of life. And so ling as one of those walks is a toxic one, there will always be toxic people bringing toxicity into gaming.
They do it because it's as devisive as politics and about equally entertaining when you watch both sides go at it. But instead of politics causing people to die, these never end in death.

It used to be about hardware though in 4th and 5th gen. The Genesis and Snes had things they were stronger and weaker than when it came to certain things. Genesis had a superior cpu, Snes had a superior sound and graphics. PS1 had fmvs, but long load times. N64 lacked fmvs and even cutscenes, but had no loading times. Sega Saturn was able to mimic the arcade games, both which PS1 and N64 lacked but it provided less polygons for 3D games. Sure it was games too, but it was also hardware. Now? Just nothing. The games are ass today. So many games just suck.
Destin, you're so young. Console wars started when Intellivision released in 1979 and advertised against Atari. We've been arguing ever since. This is instinctively part of our pack behavior. We defend our favorite sports team, car brands, religion, lawn mowers, etc.
Fast food joints, coffee brands, soda brands, smartphone companies, etc, etc... There is "fanboyism" everywhere. It's silly, it's everywhere and it sadly will never go away...

The Xbox One sold about 58 million. That's more than the original Xbox (24 million), the Dreamcast (9 million), and the Gamecube (22 million) combined.
The Nintendo switch dominates because it's in a demographic by itself. Console level handheld is popular in an age where wireless internet is good and being busy on the go, being able to quickly start and stop games is a godsend. People still haven't really adopted cloud yet. It's like the boogyman.
That is if you define gaming audience as Twitter boomers. Console war is irrelevant to gamers who play their COD or Fortnite without giving a fuck about platforms, aka the majority of gamers on earth. All they care about is controller-assisted-aiming versus MKB, which is what matters, and is true for all controllers on any platform whether on PS, XBox, Switch, or PC.

The console war is over for the ponys since they've read the documents of Spencer saying if Game Pass doesn't increase till 2027, Xbox would be out of business.. For Xbox players, the console war is done since Xbox, as proven by buying Activision to be in an entire different universe. Is the console war over? Absolutely true. Sadly, some people, usually Playstation fanboys but not exclusively, just can't get over the console wars. I mean, hell, mobile gamers and PC are bigger than all consoles, so your favorite plastic box isn't gonna really matter.

Food for thought: I believe that the whole phenomenon of brand wars largely comes from the culture of brand loyalty in the USA. This becomes evident when we examine similar behaviors beyond the gaming industry. Take, for instance, discussions about phones, particularly Android and iOS. I rarely witness individuals in any country passionately debating their OS preference, yet people from the US often engage in heated discussions about one brand or the other. Similarly, I can rarely witness intense arguments about consoles between non-US individuals. I genuinely think that brand loyalty is more of a local cultural phenomenon, at least when we are talking about these extremely aggressive debates.
Not sure how he missed the launch PS5 exclusives (Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Demons Souls) but yeah he's right with the overall argument. It isn't the argument he said he'd be addressing in the title, but whatever 😂

Consoles hit their ceiling with ps2 and never returned to it. it's not a growth market, growth only comes through charging more and more for the products. game and unit sales are static. It's why even sony had to look to pc for extra growth in the end when the original aim had been to replace it for gaming.. never happening now.
Hmm I seem to recall the PS3 cost $599.99 at launch at least the most coveted 60 GB version did. That’s the version everyone wanted. So it was $600 vs $400.
8:42 That was only a theory for the pairing of the PS5 disc drive of the "modular" version with the console itself, whether it is actually required by law for that pairing process or Sony just wants to log data and make 3rd-party replacement of the drive more difficult, is yet to be found out properly. For example, I don't think the next Nintendo hardware will require an internet connection to play any games that don't need it for gameplay. If it did, that would suck.
The real Console Wars ended with Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS5 because each company is doing stuff differently without competing with each other. The only thing thing I see in Fanboys and Fangirls defending their brand. There is no more Console Wars.
It is worth noting the idea behind console wars was very intentional. The discourse kept the known platforms popular while making the console market all but impenetrable to new entrants. A lot of it also drove console sales. Most people just buy a new console to play 3rd party games with their friends. Exclusives, especially single player, don't often convince people to buy one over the other. This is why Sony was so desperately against cross play and Xbox so for it. It's very similar to the whole iMessage mess with blue vs green text bubbles. Apple is intentionally using malicious psychology to get their users to shame and attack their friends and family into switching to IOS. *The console wars are just another byproduct of the post social media age where everything is polarizing and companies exploit that to turn consumers against exchange so they don't notice how anti consumer the companies in question are.*
The console wars do suck. They are pointless and unnecessary, as long as you buy the right thing for you, there's no need to feel like you have to justify that purchase to the world. Or join other insecure individual groups with content creator ring leaders that have to reassure you on a daily basis that what you bought is better. Speaking of which we have kind of a problem with many content creators these days who stand to profit by fueling toxicity and tribalism in the gaming space. It's annoying and it stretches beyond just content creators actually.

You're absolutely right. Consoles will die off but it's gonna take some time. They need to convince all the generations who've grown up with a console to give one up. And many just want to have their own hardware & others love the "Console War" too much. But yes, when you can stream every game at the quality of a high end gaming PC with no input latency or lag, there will be no need for expensive gaming hardware. Let alone when it would only be even weaker than what you were streaming from.

Contrary to popular belief Dustin, people are going back, to play older games on older consoles, because a lot of modern games are about activism (lgb rainbow flags, and pop idols like Cardi B in Call of Duty MW: 3), modern day game companies, do not truly care about their customers, as they once had used to, so you are going to see a falling back into the past, with older games and game consoles being bought.
Peak facts. I got a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. Even one of those built in handhelds to play games with micro SDs to boot roms. Zero reason to care about modern gaming honestly.
With the Nintendo vs Sega console war it made sense as we were like 10 years old and our parents could only afford one. Now we have 30+ year olds with disposable income, so they can buy both. Both systems are fantastic with 90% of the same library. Companies are using this to produce subpar games, we need to band together and vote for better games and prices with our wallets.

My 12 year old frequently says "Why don't Sony and Microsoft just work together to make one great console?". You can't argue with a kids logic as it would save them both a ton of money in terms of hardware development, and a lot of grief with all the arguing and courtroom bitch slapping over the years.
It is a war. Even if the consoles come out at the same time, same price, similar performance. In the end I still have to decide which one to buy. I just like xbox exclusives more then playstations. I had a ps4 instead of a xbox one because on paper the ps4 just looked better. But I didn't like the exclusives. In the end playstation would have to pull some crazy moves to get me to switch again.

As a person that plays on all platforms it is an incredible waste of time and energy bashing a console. Every platform has their own strengths and weaknesses and at the end are solid, if you like their games. It’s a shame more folks can’t enjoy all of them.

Problem with those kind of videos are always, that they are often only seen through American lenses. And yes, there was a time, where Xbox was dominating in the US in the 360 era. But they never render the whole picture how it was in the world.
It once had a purpose when you saw how uniqiue hardware was in their respective eras, as well as competition. It is just the fanboys that give it a bad connotation. Rignt now I say it sucks (not talking about fanboys/girls because in that case it always sucked) since the hardware of the Xbox and Playstation are essentially the same machine with a restrictive UI. The Playstation 1, N64, Saturn all had pros and cons regarding hardware that made all three stand out. Same with Gens and Snes.

Their war is ridiculous but I’ve noticed the most heavy voiced ones are in regions where you can normally only afford one of the consoles like that Hyped twitter account is very loud and they are from Pakistan. I own a PC for more than 30fps Microsoft experiences and because i prefer m+k for shooters. a series x for the Blu-ray drive that supports Dolby vision and atmos and the occasional couch game for light achievement whoring. and the PS5 for first party exclusives since they figured out the 45 fps Vrr mode I’m glad they finally allowed Dolby atmos though because their 3D tempest audio is horrendous sounding. Too bad they’ll never enable vision.

But Destin, I would like to push back a little bit on what you said about both approaches (Sony's single-player narrative games and Microsoft's focus on services and Game Pass) being successful. They have been successful, but I do think that both could not be sustainable in the way they currently are. Sony's exclusives are getting way too expensive to produce, and I think the streaming services bubble that burst in the last few years could also happen to Game Pass. I hope I'm wrong about both cases, but it sure seems like both approaches will suffer in the years to come.
As soon as Squadron42(Star Citizen) releases I'm moving on to PC gaming, no more need for console gaming, seeing that I'll have Game Pass on my PC and can certainly wait for PlayStation Movie Sim exclusives to launch within a year on PC. Hell, they don't even make MP games like Killzone and Resistance anymore so why bother with PS6. Nintendo is the outlier for staying on console. It is the TRUE exclusive game on console provider.

Consoles matter, because I can still not play some of the games exclusive on the Playstation consoles. I do not have the money and place to buy another console. I don't have the nerves to manager another eco system.
I wonder if Xbox and PlayStation stopped trying to be the top end hardware if pc games would diverge. Side not though I think that amd and especially nvidia are starting to see that high end gpu race is netting less and less and are moving to other sectors.
Console wars are inherent to the industry, every generation will have a console war, it began with Atari and Nintendo, then Nintendo and Sega, then Playstation, Nintendo and Sega, then xbox joined. Nintendo won the early years, playstation won since ps1 was released. Now Nintendo is back with a massively popular hybrid system and Xbox is forever in third place. Console wars, wether you hate them or not, they will never go away, and since I have no brand loyalty i dont believe they suck, its a way to analyse the industry shifts.
I actually never cared about the "console wars" until Microsoft decided to buy up the whole industry to win it. They are so bad for gaming overall but people are blinded by the "value" of Gamepass, which has already proven to be a double edged sword.

Just Built a Master Race PC, I have all the consoles, however now games are already coming out that only run at 30fps on next gen consoles, that sucks. I will always take frame rate over resolution, however PC can give you both with hi rez textures.

fr. console wars is like the main hobby of insoles that never had and never will have a girlfriend, and dont have money to afford more than 1 system, and/or dont have the INT or dignity to not ride D of mega rich corporations that really dont care about you. i have all consoles, and i like em all in some ways and they all been making me mad and disappointed more and more over the years over their bad designs and/or business choices trying to milk and screw over the customers. plus i only care about a few exclusives and nowadays a lot of exclusives end up coming to other systems later anyway.

It used to be about hardware though in 4th and 5th gen. The Genesis and Snes had things they were stronger and weaker than when it came to certain things. Genesis had a superior cpu, Snes had a superior sound and graphics. PS1 had fmvs, but long load times. N64 lacked fmvs and even cutscenes, but had no loading times. Sega Saturn was able to mimic the arcade games, both which PS1 and N64 lacked but it provided less polygons for 3D games. Sure it was games too, but it was also hardware. Now? Just nothing. The games are ass today. So many games just suck.

The Xbox One sold about 58 million. That's more than the original Xbox (24 million), the Dreamcast (9 million), and the Gamecube (22 million) combined.
The Nintendo switch dominates because it's in a demographic by itself. Console level handheld is popular in an age where wireless internet is good and being busy on the go, being able to quickly start and stop games is a godsend. People still haven't really adopted cloud yet. It's like the boogyman.
Without the console wars, gaming would of been so much blander.

Take, for instance, discussions about phones, particularly Android and iOS. I rarely witness individuals in any country passionately debating their OS preference, yet people from the US often engage in heated discussions about one brand or the other. Similarly, I can rarely witness intense arguments about consoles between non-US individuals.
I genuinely think that brand loyalty is more of a local cultural phenomenon, at least when we are talking about these extremely aggressive debates.

Consoles hit their ceiling with ps2 and never returned to it. it's not a growth market, growth only comes through charging more and more for the products. game and unit sales are static. It's why even sony had to look to pc for extra growth in the end when the original aim had been to replace it for gaming.. never happening now.

Hmm I seem to recall the PS3 cost $599.99 at launch at least the most coveted 60 GB version did. That’s the version everyone wanted. So it was $600 vs $400.

For example, I don't think the next Nintendo hardware will require an internet connection to play any games that don't need it for gameplay. If it did, that would suck.
The real Console Wars ended with Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, PS5 because each company is doing stuff differently without competing with each other. The only thing thing I see in Fanboys and Fangirls defending their brand. There is no more Console Wars.
It is worth noting the idea behind console wars was very intentional. The discourse kept the known platforms popular while making the console market all but impenetrable to new entrants. A lot of it also drove console sales. Most people just buy a new console to play 3rd party games with their friends. Exclusives, especially single player, don't often convince people to buy one over the other. This is why Sony was so desperately against cross play and Xbox so for it. It's very similar to the whole iMessage mess with blue vs green text bubbles. Apple is intentionally using malicious psychology to get their users to shame and attack their friends and family into switching to IOS. *The console wars are just another byproduct of the post social media age where everything is polarizing and companies exploit that to turn consumers against exchange so they don't notice how anti consumer the companies in question are.*

The console wars do suck. They are pointless and unnecessary, as long as you buy the right thing for you, there's no need to feel like you have to justify that purchase to the world. Or join other insecure individual groups with content creator ring leaders that have to reassure you on a daily basis that what you bought is better. Speaking of which we have kind of a problem with many content creators these days who stand to profit by fueling toxicity and tribalism in the gaming space. It's annoying and it stretches beyond just content creators actually.

You're absolutely right. Consoles will die off but it's gonna take some time. They need to convince all the generations who've grown up with a console to give one up. And many just want to have their own hardware & others love the "Console War" too much.
But yes, when you can stream every game at the quality of a high end gaming PC with no input latency or lag, there will be no need for expensive gaming hardware. Let alone when it would only be even weaker than what you were streaming from.

Contrary to popular belief Dustin, people are going back, to play older games on older consoles, because a lot of modern games are about activism (lgb rainbow flags, and pop idols like Cardi B in Call of Duty MW: 3), modern day game companies, do not truly care about their customers, as they once had used to, so you are going to see a falling back into the past, with older games and game consoles being bought.
Peak facts. I got a Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. Even one of those built in handhelds to play games with micro SDs to boot roms. Zero reason to care about modern gaming honestly.
With the Nintendo vs Sega console war it made sense as we were like 10 years old and our parents could only afford one. Now we have 30+ year olds with disposable income, so they can buy both. Both systems are fantastic with 90% of the same library. Companies are using this to produce subpar games, we need to band together and vote for better games and prices with our wallets.

My 12 year old frequently says "Why don't Sony and Microsoft just work together to make one great console?". You can't argue with a kids logic as it would save them both a ton of money in terms of hardware development, and a lot of grief with all the arguing and courtroom bitch slapping over the years.
It is a war. Even if the consoles come out at the same time, same price, similar performance. In the end I still have to decide which one to buy.

As a person that plays on all platforms it is an incredible waste of time and energy bashing a console. Every platform has their own strengths and weaknesses and at the end are solid, if you like their games. It’s a shame more folks can’t enjoy all of them.

It once had a purpose when you saw how uniqiue hardware was in their respective eras, as well as competition. It is just the fanboys that give it a bad connotation.
Rignt now I say it sucks (not talking about fanboys/girls because in that case it always sucked) since the hardware of the Xbox and Playstation are essentially the same machine with a restrictive UI. The Playstation 1, N64, Saturn all had pros and cons regarding hardware that made all three stand out. Same with Gens and Snes.

I own a PC for more than 30fps Microsoft experiences and because i prefer m+k for shooters.
a series x for the Blu-ray drive that supports Dolby vision and atmos and the occasional couch game for light achievement whoring.
and the PS5 for first party exclusives since they figured out the 45 fps Vrr mode I’m glad they finally allowed Dolby atmos though because their 3D tempest audio is horrendous sounding. Too bad they’ll never enable vision.

But Destin, I would like to push back a little bit on what you said about both approaches (Sony's single-player narrative games and Microsoft's focus on services and Game Pass) being successful. They have been successful, but I do think that both could not be sustainable in the way they currently are. Sony's exclusives are getting way too expensive to produce, and I think the streaming services bubble that burst in the last few years could also happen to Game Pass. I hope I'm wrong about both cases, but it sure seems like both approaches will suffer in the years to come.
I kinda think the new main market might be mini PCs or maybe Steam will try relaunching some kind of Steam box after the success of the steam deck

As soon as Squadron42(Star Citizen) releases I'm moving on to PC gaming, no more need for console gaming, seeing that I'll have Game Pass on my PC and can certainly wait for PlayStation Movie Sim exclusives to launch within a year on PC. Hell, they don't even make MP games like Killzone and Resistance anymore so why bother with PS6.
Nintendo is the outlier for staying on console. It is the TRUE exclusive game on console provider.

Consoles matter, because I can still not play some of the games exclusive on the Playstation consoles. I do not have the money and place to buy another console. I don't have the nerves to manager another eco system.

Console wars are inherent to the industry, every generation will have a console war, it began with Atari and Nintendo, then Nintendo and Sega, then Playstation, Nintendo and Sega, then xbox joined. Nintendo won the early years, playstation won since ps1 was released. Now Nintendo is back with a massively popular hybrid system and Xbox is forever in third place. Console wars, wether you hate them or not, they will never go away, and since I have no brand loyalty i dont believe they suck, its a way to analyse the industry shifts.

Just Built a Master Race PC, I have all the consoles, however now games are already coming out that only run at 30fps on next gen consoles, that sucks. I will always
take frame rate over resolution, however PC can give you both with hi rez textures.
