I think the driver was leaving quite a bit on the table. But I dont really blame him. Screwing up by overcooking a corner at PP might be your last official act...self preservation is a strong instinct. I would have probably been more conservative than he was. I am sure his time was pretty darn quick in spite of driving conservatively. He was smart. He saved the car by not beating on the car, and drove clean. Not what spectators want, but spectators dont pay the parts bills!!!! Just sayin.
Not everyone can be Hannu Mikkola, Ari Vatanen, Monster Tajima, etc, and not every car will be perfectly ready either. And who cares? If you like this sort of thing it must be appreciated that the driver was having a great time, as were the spectators. A 900 hp RS200 on a public road race up a particularly tall mountain in the usa with a bunch of people lucky enough to see it is an extremely special occasion.
This guy can drive but 900hp is very hard to drive smoothly and on the limit. He has more power than he needs at almost every moment. I have a few cars, 147kw vw jetta and a 650hp 300zx. if you saw me drive the jetta you would think i was amazing, if you saw me drive the 300zx you would say i cant drive at all.
lots of horsepower makes it much harder to appear smooth and fast. I own 4 subarus, most of them are slow and one isnt. the one that isnt is a challenge to drive at the limit. The others, pretty easy to drive at ten tenths. If I drove the fast one all the time, I might get smoother and faster but I would also have no drivers license...its a hard choice lol.
Great run, looks like Pat just needs to learn the course a little more to get faster..................Other than that let Liam Doran have a run up the hill :-) Hope the RS200 spanked some on the Yank Tanks in the event.............
I don't recall seeing him slide in any of the corners. While sliding is not as fast on tarmac, if you're pushing hard, it's bound to happen. Anyone know what his time was here (i'm guessing high 9:xx.xxx range)?
It was a 10.18.. It could have been much faster but the car was just repaired from a very hard crash during pratice week before ;) Maybe in 2018 we will see what it truly is capable of doing..
Ari vatanen or tommi makinen maybe, i reckon loeb would be quicker still but with more practice, this thing has significant turbo lag that would give ari vatanen a significant advantage. Henri toivonen would have been ballistic if not for Corsica 86.
Loeb with les bhp set a record there and I really thought that with this beast one of Doran (both guys are father and son both are racing in many different motorsport disciplines rally, rally cross, hill climb, pikes-peak) I really thought since they have 100bhp or so more than Loeb they could beat his record time for unlimited ice cars but is like too careful and braking early probably another fact is strong winds going up but it seems like the Loeb time is still unbeaten..

Having my head cleaved off or torso smashed in by a tumbling 900 hp compact doesn't seem like a great way to die. At least the driver has the excuse of being inside of it. The people standing just on the shoulder always struck me as a special kind of stupid. They get to see a car drive by for five seconds in exchange for great risk if anything goes wrong.

An amazing machine, but the driver was wasting too much time on the brakes and tiptoeing through corners. Lacks that ten tenths confidence.
