Houdini Tutorial - Nodes Part 1: Attribute Nodes

  • This tutorial is a bit different to what we usually do. In this tutorial, we aren't recreating an effect but rather, we go over some of Houdini's many nodes. This is mostly intended for beginners. Houdini's nodes can be intimidating due to the sheer volume of nodes. However, in this tutorial we go over them and explain them. This is part 1 and we are going over Attribute Nodes.
    In our blog-post we go over how to create the morphing sphere that is seen in the intro.

    This tutorial reminds me of the old adage about teaching someone to fish rather than just handing them one to eat. It was extremely enlightening, so please continue with more like this.

    Hey everyone, something a bit different! This is mainly meant for those who are new to Houdini but from 16:25 we start going over more complex node structures. There are timestamps in the description. We had some issues with our intro tutorial so that will be up next week, sorry for the wait. Enjoy!

    This tutorial is exactly what I needed at this stage in my learning - I think it'll be one that I come back to many times for reference as well!
    For the glow on the rubber toy at 28:00 the only way I could get it to work was adding a material node, just putting the ps on the geometry didn't work for me (v17).

    @19:20 - If you're using v16.5 and your 'Tube' geo is missing the Rotation inputs, just set the 'Orientation' to the Z-axis to match what's shown. As well, the 'Mirror Att.' didn't require switching to Vector Mirror (created strange results). It works fine when set to 'No Mirroring'.

  • @Ceonsamea
    @Ceonsamea 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks! I'm an intermediate user but this was still helpful, I have a habit of doing everything in VEX when sometimes it can be done more quickly with a node. I think learning all of the fundamental nodes and being reminded of what they can do and when to use them is very beneficial and time saving. The examples provided are cool and practical as well. Keep up the great content!
    The VOP vs VEX section at 41:00 repeats the first portion (about 2 minutes of repeated content), just wanted to let you know in case you missed it.

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also tend to go a little overboard with VEX when it could be simplified, old habits die hard I guess. Also, thanks for pointing that out, I re-recorded that one section because I made a mistake and ended up overlapping the two recordings. TH-cam should update the edit soon. Thanks again for pointing it out and thanks for watching :)

  • @danielgomezlorenzo6966

    What a great tutorial. When you explain the Attribute Interpolate node, wouldn't be the same result if you put the Mountain node after the Scatter node? I've tried it and the points seem to stick well onto the deforming surface, so I think I'm missing something about what the Attribute Interpolate node actually does. Thanks for your time!

    Is there any difference between @Cd = set(0,1,0) and @Cd = {0,1,0} ?

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, so in this case, no - either is perfectly fine.
      But, the curly braces {} will only work for constant values (values that don't change ie. non-variable). 'set' is used for assigning variables to vectors:
      float val = 1;
      vector vecVal = set(val, val, val);
      Perfect.
      This is the right way. If you used curly braces it wouldn't work. Just remember, if you can just give some constant values (ie. 1, 3, 5.5 etc) use curly braces. If you are using a variable (xVal, yVal, zVal) then use 'set'.
      Hope that helps!
