    Will you come with me? Won't you come with me? There's no better place to take a long strange trip with the Grateful Dead than right here. We've got music from every single studio album and a bevy of live albums, to boot. There are celebrated live performances from the 70s and 80s and official videos with more skeletons than you can shake your bones at, an exclusive seaside series on what's to come from the band's rich catalog and details on meet-ups all across the promised land. If it's community you’re after, try your hand at our yearly DEAD COVERS PROJECT competition and connect with fellow Dead Heads around the world. Heck, keep your eyes peeled you might even catch a glimpse of Pigpen on keys, Jerry in a GROOVE, Bobby tellin' tales, Mickey talkin' space, Phil and friends, Bill on the beach, or anyone from our extended family.

    It's all happenin' right here. Subscribe and you won't miss a thing.

    I was there with my beloved Jane along with some very dear friends. Jane passed away five years ago and watching and hearing this brings back all my wonderful memories of her. She was the love of my life and I miss her dearly. God bless you my dear wife! I pray she is hearing this in heaven!!

      Amen brother....sorry for your loss but glad you have those memories. My (now) wife and I missed an opportunity to see them for the first time at RFK stadium in DC in '95.....now we live vicariously through all the follow-up iterations and cover bands......still appreciate the music!

    I have been a musician almost all my life and I just recently turned 70. I don't know why I paid no attention to these guys in the past but I'm making up for lost time. I listen to them daily both at work and at home and in the car. I just can't get enough. I love to improvise and this is the kind of band I wish I could have been in for all these years. I know it's not too late as long as I'm on this side of the soil and I'm now going to look to put together a GD tribute band. Wish me luck.

      Thanks. This was a very nice set list for 1989!! Lots of my favourites here!! Scarlet/Fire, The Other One, Iko Iko, Ramble on Rose, I love Estimated Prophet (maybe one of the few who actually does...) Lovelight (Bob's song he brought back when they really should have let it die with Pig Pen in my opinion) . Not big on their encore - I've never enjoyed their rendition of Knockin on Heaven's Door, and I'm bored to death and would've taken a pee break as soon as they started into Little Red Rooster. Lovely Standing On the Moon though....

    and drove for almost 36 hours straight so I could get home in time for a Dead concert. My roommate had bought an entire row of tickets and I got to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta just in time for the show. My friends knew how tired I was and gave me 3 little pictures of Snoopy the dog to pep me up. Still, I promptly fell asleep and didn't wake up until the encore. But man!...The dreams I had! The long version of Sugar Magnolia was great too. Thanks Jerry and crew for the great music...and dreams.

    It's amazing that a band (with THAT lineup) has been gone for so long now, but we keep listening and commenting in such numbers... I miss The Grateful Dead so much it's a permanent ache inside my heart and soul... God, to stand at the front of that stage and see Jerry looking right at me with a huge smile and a look of such bliss on his face. I know it wasn't ALWAYS like that for him (or for anyone)... I know he suffered terribly for a very long time, and in that, I'm glad he's free... He certainly brought so much joy and happiness to so many for so long, and I know that it took EVERYONE in that band, to BE that band... It wasn't JUST Jerry... In fact, it wasn't REALLY Jerry's band... Bob became the musical director of The Grateful Dead in the mid 1970's... But in many ways they were a band that belonged to everyone!!!
    No matter what anyone believes it doesn't change how much I miss them! Someone early on said something to the effect of, it's worth being old now just to have been young then.
    I sort of agree with that! I do feel blessed to see all the amazing bands and artists I've seen over the years, but it's difficult for me that the majority of those bands and artists are gone now... Or WELL past their peak. It occurred to me the other day that we could easily lose the great Paul Mccartney and Ringo Starr in this decade... It made me realize that I really don't want to live in a world where there are no remaining members of The Beatles alive anymore. How foreign and empty that world will be!
    I'm ten years younger than Sir Paul, but part of me truly hopes I'm taken BEFORE him! Sorry to sound so bleak... It's been a hard year... Hell, it's been a hard life! Thank God for these recordings! They allow my heroes to still sort of inhabit a world they're not really in anymore! As always, ✌🏼 & ❤️ 2the 🌎🌍!

      Wish I could have made some Philly shows..all my shows were MSG, Nassau coliseum, Giants stadium and Brendan Byrne arena. I'd have to pick MSG as my fave cause they were always on fire in NY and MSG was a small place to see them at that point.. though the coliseum was even smaller... Nothing like the energy at the Garden. The JFK show was so perfect though from beginning to end! What a way to close down the stadium! 💜✌️🌷⚡💀🎶🎵

    Man, the solo in Ramble on Rose at about the 29 minute mark is just perfection. It's more than wonderfully melodic, it feels like a journey. As a life long guitarist, I put Jerry at the top. Above Hendrix, Clapton... all of them. Not just technical skill, but his sense of melody infuses everything. Nothing, and no one, can compare. While he is certainly well regarded amongst guitarists, I don't feel he is given his proper due. Rest in music, fat man. I sure you miss you.

    • @afmartin2734
      @afmartin2734 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. It's the ability to capture melody so well and fluidly, where it's memorable. It's not just with the lead guitar parts, but all over the songs, obviously, as well. Most people have no idea what a gift that is. Plenty of guitar players can develop chops, rehearse a lot, play fast solos, some of them certainly great in their own right, but melody and feel is where it's at. Even when Garcia makes an error, it sounds great. Sign of a genius.

    • @markh3055
      @markh3055 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. He was a musical genius. The guitar is like a natural appendage in his hands. It's like how us normal mortals just naturally open a door. To someone like myself without guitar skills it's like he just thinks the notes and his hands magically follow without missing a string or fret. Whenever he comes to mind I'm saddened that he left us so early, but glad that in a relatively short life he left such an amazing musical legacy.

    • @stevehildner5630
      @stevehildner5630 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@newmania4242 I was just thinking that. In terms of rhythm guitarists, Bobby was and is, an extremely outstanding, and very underrated one. I mean, look who he had to play next to. That being said, seriously, from a musicians viewpoint, he did all the things an efficient rhythm player is supposed to do. He used inversions, thumb chords, triads and knew all the obscure chord voicings necessary to keep him from "occupying" the same range as Jerry and Brent. I swear to God, I can't remember seeing him play below the fourth fret, using open "cowboy" chords, and I have actually heard tapes of him swinging bends off Jerry. Plus he had a lot of charisma, and presence. Jerry made himself visible through his playing, but didn't really give a shit about actually being a "frontman", maybe the leader, yes.
      Too bad he was almost always too low in the mix. We used to make an effort to sit on Bobby's "side" so we were in the sweet spot. Dead center was all Jerry.

      Mike Lenowsky I agree 100%. I’ve said the same thing for years. Brent’s death was the first celebrity death that really hit me. Brent was vastly under appreciated and underrated. The light went out in Jerry when Brent passed. The light flickered, occasionally. After all these years it’s really clear just how important Brent was to the GD.

      @@mbass718 Well said. To see them interact and share a musical space. Was a real gift. Check them on July 4 , 89 Truckin' up to Buffalo (On YT) Whole show is a ripper but check Jer and Brent on Not Fade Away. NEVER seen them having that much fun. Oh, and 3-14-90 Let it Grow. Their DNA intermingled. After Brent cashed out Jerry couldn't get grounded, IMHO.
