Such a wonderful memory. Had to get tickets with a lottery. Slept on the sidewalk for two days waiting for the show(I'm in the movie). The show itself. And breakfast afterwards. I'm 70 now, wish I was there again.
Life was so much simpler in 1970's. We are dinosaurs now but we witnessed the greatest period of time for music; 1968 to 1978. We had different values then. We could just sit outside in the dirt and dig a hole with a stick. We threw a tennis ball at the wires and each wire was a different base in baseball. We had to use our imagination. I can remember having my boom box and waiting until the songs came on the radio and then try to hit the record button just at the right moment. I would get lost in the music. I would visualize the guitar or the bass and how they mixed the overall sound. Of course, years later I would become a musician. The days of wonder and imagination are long behind us. Oh I wish young people today had just a taste of how we lived back then. Thank you for your comment. Peace.
So many people were desperate to get tickets. They used to wave signs saying “ I need a miracle “! I was philosophical about it. Tickets came to me when I needed them. I saw them with Little Feat at a outdoor concert at a racetrack here in Maine. The show was supposed to be sold out but by chance I just asked if they had any extra and they had 10. I had enough for one ticket and I hitchhiked there. I was a memorable show. The summer nights are awesome. The music was like food for our soul for sure.

67 and liked them in high school when I had Workingmans Dead and American Beauty (still among the all time great albums from an era where somebody was turning out a great album every month). I remember joking about could we just go to the concert without joining the cult. Then I saw my first show - Folsom Field in September 72 - and I got it. Never "followed the band" but I saw them at least two dozen times from Red Rocks to Winterland. Didn't see this but in early 80s used to go to their New Years shows in Oakland. Great times. The show was the first time I saw the Dead. My parents were at a new years party with friends, and I watched this live on the SF PBS station. It changed my life. I saw the Dead live for the first time two months later and Keith and Donna's last show.
Started listening 🎧 to the Dead in 93 round about and I was only 13 , and now I'm 42, and here I am 29 yrs later still jamming out, never got to see Jerry play unfortunately, my first show wasn't until like 98 or so can't remember if they were still the Dead or not , might of been a Phil Lesh and Friends, pretty sure they didn't change Thier name until quite a few yrs after Jerry died, but akso seen Bob Weirs band WharfRat a couple times , but no favorite yr I like all the Dead, never heard a bad song by em ever, I used to have every studio album on cassette tapes and CDs , wish I still had that collection
Yes.. I'm 36 and started listening heavy around the time I turned 30 and 89 and the summer of 90 are my favorites.. a long with the fall of 1980 and the spring of 77
@@jamestyson57 they only had 2 studio I believe. In the dark and one other maybe 2, the rest are all taken from live shows. They held out on commercialism as much as possible, it wasn't all about money and Grammies. I believe they accomplished one with touch of Grey from in the dark, which was recorded in the dark by every member except Bob, some of his classic chords require fret board sight. He uses many technical chords. Names elude me atm.
I saw them in Pittsburgh in ‘ 9:25 81-ish, and the local paper interviewed a groupie about his following the Dead and I still remember what he said his typical recording pattern was: “tonight I trip, tomorrow I tape…”
Hurricane upon us here in South Florida, but gonna keep listening to Jerry and the Dead all day long until we lose power. Have a Blessed Day everyone. Peace
I'm 34 and I still absolutely love the boys and see all the remaining members every chance I get, there will never be another band this good. Thanks boys for changing lives for the better, making good men. Love y'all
Jerry's singing is unmatched ... it s not an outstanding voice, ... yes it is .... his singing is so touching .... he sounds so fragile when he sings ... love it
It sounds real, that’s one of the great things about the rotating set list, the songs might not be polished (or they might be...) but they have that authentic feeling behind and infused into them
45 here, been grateful since 16. My sister had come home from college and accidentally left a GD cassette in the boom box. I listened more and more each day before and after school and was hooked in no time. Soon after I bought the Without A Net, cassette. Love too many to name but St Stephen was the first one and it changed my life! Fare thee well!
Seen this half-hour sequence probably 100 times...and it never, ever gets old. The energy, the ecstasy, the magic; It’s got it all! Thank you for a REAL good time...
I always thought the Sugar Mag > Scarlet combo from this night was special. (Did they really do that 100 times?) Either way, you are right when you say this version has got "the magic." ;)
about 2 weeks after this show I was sitting at a bar in CT when Matt "Guitar" Murphy sat next to me and ordered an OJ. I asked him about playing with the dead that night and he turned and exclaimed "them cats are crazy!" I went to bed at one and woke up at six and they were still playing!!!
I was lucky enough to be there ! for that New Years ! My Wife who passed last year toured with her friends , But at that time in 1978 she was only 13 and not there . Hell I hadn't even met her yet ! She went on to see 111 show's, I'm older and a slacker, I have only been to 78 shows. Looking through our ticket stubs brings me happy memories and keeps me going...Rock On !
How can anyone not fall in love with Scarlet Begonias-with them tucked into her curls, the way she moves, the look in her eyes.....heart of gold band! Music is so melodic, can’t beat 3 guitars 2 dummers all the singers, bosanova jam-Boom blows my mind! Just picture the west coasters dancing to this back in the day when life was grand!
Rest Easy Bill Walton gonna be very missed his joy and love for life is something we all Should take on more in our own lives!! I can just picture bills big smile as jerry Garcia welcome’s him into heaven with a guitar riff
I'm glad some of you young peeps are digging the sounds....the grateful dead are one of the most unique phenomenon to have ever come to fruition. Just an incredibly inexplicable thing. You either get it or you don't and if you saw it and still didn't get it....sadly, there is no hope for you.
Grew up with a pretty cool dad that passed down the love of grate music to me. He wasnt a Dead Head but certainly appreciated them. A nice scarlet fire is my go-to wind down music.
I listened to the entire show live as is was being carried on FM in San Francisco in 1978. Those were the days alright, the good old days! Thank you Mr. Garcia et al.
I’ve seen/saw them at least 30 times. Just saw Dead & Company here in Atlanta. The music will never stop because we are the music. They played it, we became it, and together we will always be it. 🙏✌🏼
Are you related to Tyler!? He is one Bad Ass Musician!!! I didn't hear enough of him to know if he covers any Dead but I do believe he's worthy! They are like Jahovas Favorite Choir & you write like a genuine Pen Pushing Pimp Daddy. So welll put Carl!
I was at the Chase Center for Dead and Company on New Year's Eve 2020...it was a awesome show..3 sets...5+ hours...Bill Walton dressed up as Father Time and Wavy Gravy was Baby 2020 in nothing but a tye-dye diaper...

Many shows under my belt , everyone a stranger trip then the one before...Wouldnt change a minute of the time spent. Some understood , some didnt. A dead show was a magic time that tied so many people together with love and a coming effect. We need more of this today! Peace : )✌
Lifeblood to me.....first time I saw them was here 1970 New Years Eve.........I never looked back......certainly was and is a long strange trip.......carry on Dead family here and "over there"......
When I was a kid in the 90's all my friends were DeadHeads, I was more into hard rock at the time but I always loved Fire on the Mountain and a couple others. Now that I'm older, hearing the Dead instantly brings me back to those days and nights sitting around a fire with my head in the clouds, not a care in the world. Glad I got to hear Jerry playing live once, I'll never forget that day. I still love to rock out but I guess I'm a DeadHead now too :)
Haha I’m 17 now. All my friends are dead heads and I’m into Jimi Hendrix and more classic rock, but my friends got me into it, I’m likin it. Fire on the mountain was the first song I actually like. Same thing decades apart
Awesome wish i was alive for this! You old school heads are so lucky! We are to though great music still being made and unforgettable shows with the Dead and Company! Thanks guys for all the great music and priceless memories!
This is so fucking good. The Grateful Dead are America's house band, in my opinion. There was no one like them. I always have felt that people who hate on the Dead, don't like them or say they don't like them, or haven't been exposed to them.... are all people that are missing out on something hugely magical. This piece of music is medicine and it is magic, and cannot be denied. It is one of many, too... Jerry was both blessed and cursed but was one of a special kind and this video captures how much of a master he was.
I'm 82 and still lovin the Dead. The whole band is brilliant here. Jerry is smokin i sent this on to my grandson doing basic training somewhere in the negev desert. It’s a amazing classic in the history of rock and roll!
I’m somewhere in there with the balloons. Met a binaca bottle as soon as I arrived. Oh what a time! Glad I’m still here 42 years later. ❤️ Stay safe and healthy, everyone. See you on the other side!
Thank you for the bottle of Binaca comment, that made me laugh out loud, then gave me the chills, then I got all excited in anticpation for what was about to happen next.
I am a very grateful dead head and found the band alittle later in life, if everything takes care of itself than this is apart of the tracks of my life adventure and apart of my reasons for happiness. I now find myself listening to them daily and tend to have a great time with their music, thanks for whoever put all of their concerts together!!!!
I was in junior high when i started listening to them.. I’m in my mid 40’s.This always helps me chill with my wife and children because all of us have different problems in life 😎

I started following the Dead in the mid 80's saw some great concerts with friends when I was very young. Unfortunately many of my Dead Head friends have passed away. I still love to listen to their music so many good memories mostly in NYC
Hey guys, that is cool to hear. I saw these Dudes in 77 or 78, I’m 90% sure it was 78. I am so psyched folks at your age appreciate this music. Very encouraging. Peace, love, and enjoy.
Nah. You have unusually good taste, but I'm pretty sure you aren't alone. Just remember the freaks and weirdos are the best people in any generation! And never be afraid to wave your freak flag high!
My daughter is 27. As a wee one, she had a GD mix tape that she would listen to, in order to "calm down and relax". LOL, she still has this mix tape, and has bought equipment, in order to keep listening to it.
I saw the Dead in November of 1970, at the "Syndrome" in Chicago, Illinois. It was a Religious Deadland Experience that was wholly Supernatural: I transcended on real 'mescaline,' near the end of the Concert, I walked up to the flat bed truck the Dead were playing on, then blew my Marijuana joint exhale right at Jerry while he was playing---Pigpen got a real laugh out of it all. I miss Pigpen, the Dead were never the same after his passing. "Rest in Peace," all Deadheads who have passed on into the unseen Universe.
The onlyReligious Supernatural Experience was the high you got from the mescaline and weed. This is not music it is bat shit boring stuff. I can't understand why anyone would enjoy listening to this stuff.
@@bettybho2168 it’s not for you that’s cool. It’s because it’s love man this music is good vibes and love. I listen to it sober as a bird and I still feel their emotion through their instruments and vocals. Maybe I’m an empath

Tripping balls?

Not unfortunate at all. Acid helped him explore different music in different ways. If anything it added to the music, exponentially.
GAWD those concerts were some of the best times of my life!
This will always be my favorite version of Scarlet/Fire. Just so in the groove.
For those that understand no explanation is necessary, For those that don’t no explanation will do! Eternally grateful for all their music! 😎✌️
The show was the first time I saw the Dead. My parents were at a new years party with friends, and I watched this live on the SF PBS station. It changed my life. I saw the Dead live for the first time two months later and Keith and Donna's last show.
Got introduced to the Grateful Dead at 15, I’m 26 now and I cannot go a day with out listening to them. Anyone else’s favorite year 89’?
89 was best Brent. I think they peaked as a band that year
Yes.. I'm 36 and started listening heavy around the time I turned 30 and 89 and the summer of 90 are my favorites.. a long with the fall of 1980 and the spring of 77
@@jeromegarcia1669 love it buddy!! I still have a lot to learn!
RIP. Phil. ❤🎉 thank you from Wisconsin.

The fact that someone recorded this in 1978! O.o Bravo! =)

Hurricane upon us here in South Florida, but gonna keep listening to Jerry and the Dead all day long until we lose power. Have a Blessed Day everyone. Peace

Jerry looked so badass 77-79.

@@bidenscrewedamerica1844H it compares alright. It's all about state of mind 🎉
Jerry's singing is unmatched ... it s not an outstanding voice, ... yes it is .... his singing is so touching .... he sounds so fragile when he sings ... love it
It sounds real, that’s one of the great things about the rotating set list, the songs might not be polished (or they might be...) but they have that authentic feeling behind and infused into them
He really MEANS what he's saying. It's about communication, not simply hitting notes. One of the greats in that sense!!!
@@helmsjon youre spot on! Jerry wasnt a perfect singer but when he sang he fucking meant it!

and I know the answer! HELL YES! There will ALWAYS be Deadheads! Forever and ever, amen.
My parents went to a dead concert when my mom was like 8 months pregnant. Anytime I do anything unorthodox, THAT'S WHY!!!
Your sister left the cassette by accident. My brother took my Blues for Allah out of the car on the beach. Never saw it again.

Seen this half-hour sequence probably 100 times...and it never, ever gets old. The energy, the ecstasy, the magic; It’s got it all! Thank you for a REAL good time...
West Coast shows were the best especially the 70s!
Isn't that the truth! Best years of my life.
@@marksapienza3832 the west coast crowd was the best. I'd have to debate show comment tho. Guess it's all a matter of perspective
I always thought the Sugar Mag > Scarlet combo from this night was special. (Did they really do that 100 times?) Either way, you are right when you say this version has got "the magic." ;)
@@bidenscrewedamerica1844 Just asking - if your gonna make that your channel name can you please capitalize "America"? Thanks.
The Grateful Dead are American folk hero’s to me . I was very lucky to see them up close and personal in some very small venues
I love the smile on Jerry's face!
about 2 weeks after this show I was sitting at a bar in CT when Matt "Guitar" Murphy sat next to me and ordered an OJ.

Thank you mom for taking me to see the Grateful Dead on New Years, at Cal Expo back in the day! ❤

Very nicely put sir...Couldn't agree more!

these boys paved the way for my musical transformation and make no exception I am so grateful .to be this kind of Dead.
What the fuckkkk hahahaha I’m laughing and crying.
Great message. I have never tripped too hard but I have experienced a few apparitions without sound sans-drug. Stay over easy :)
