  • We all love bias-cut garments -- they hug the curves of the body and drape elegantly off the body. You can easily adapt sewing patterns to cut the fabric for your garments on the bias. Watch this tutorial to learn how, and check out the blog post for more information:

It was a few years ago now, but I think I found it at Fulton Fabrics in downtown Brooklyn.

Thanks for the tips! I'm about to embark on sewing my first bias dress.
What if you don't want to cut your front bodice piece down the middle? What would you need to do?

It's fine to cut the front all in one piece; you'll still get the benefits of cutting the dress on the bias. The fabric may 'spiral' or twist around a tiny bit more than it would if you cut the dress with a front center seam, but it shouldn't be too noticeable.

Is it normal to have a straight grain and bias grain together in the side seam? It's really annoying! I tried to cut my skirt on bias but my one side seam had a bias grain at the top and straight grain at the bottom. my skirt has flare at the bottom maybe because of that? sorry if there are mistakes my English is bad. 😅

Hi K.N. - yes, if the skirt flares out, it's normal for the direction of the grain to change as you move down the skirt. The skirt should still drape well even if the bottom of the skirt is on the straight grain.

Is the fabric folded as well by the corners at a 45 degree as well?

No, you don't need to fold the fabric on the 45 degree - you just need to place the pattern on the fabric at 45 degrees.
